HEAD FOOTBALL COACH DENNIS FRANCHIONE In his 30th season as a head coach, Dennis Franchione is looking to lead Texas State to its second-straight winning season in the FBS ranks in 2015 after becoming the first coach in the last 32 years to lead the Bobcats to three non-losing seasons in the last four years. Franchione led the Bobcats to a 7-5 record last season despite putting in new offensive and defensive systems. He converted Texas State’s offense to an up-tempo attack that resulted in Robert Lowe becoming the school’s first 1,000yard rusher in five seasons, Tyler Jones developing into the most accurate passer in school history and Texas State ranking among the top four most improved offenses in the nation. He also added a new defensive coordinator to his staff and Texas State produced a Fourth-Team All-American linebacker and Sun Belt Conference Defensive Player of the Year and a pair of NFL Draft picks. Franchione entered the 2015 campaign looking to build on last season’s success by leading the Bobcats to their

second-straight winning season, a feat that Texas State has accomplished just one other time since he led the school to back to back winning seasons in 1990 and 1991. He returned to Texas State in 2011 and began the process of leading the Bobcats in their transition to the NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS). During his first four seasons, he led the Bobcats to 23 wins and at least six wins in three seasons during that span. Franchione is one of just four active NCAA Division I FBS coaches and one of just 18 FBS coaches all-time to record 211 career victories. He began his head-coaching career at Southwestern College in 1981, and compiled a 14-4-2 record in two seasons. The Builders also won a conference championship and had a victory in the 1982 Sunflower Bowl. Following the record-setting season, Franchione was the offensive coordinator at Tennessee Tech for two seasons before being named head coach at his alma mater, Pittsburg State. During the next five seasons, he led the Gorillas to a 53-6 record and five conference titles with a combined 37-1 conference record before being named head coach at Texas State in 1990. He led the Bobcats to a combined 13-9 record in the next two years as the Bobcats posted back-to-back winning records for the first time in the Division I FCS ranks. Franchione coached his first FBS team at New Mexico, and led the Lobos to their first bowl game in 36 years. Then, he turned around a 1-10 team at TCU and led the Horned Frogs to a 28-19 victory over USC in the Sun Bowl in his first season and to inaugural Mobile Alabama Bowl in his second season. He went on to transform a 3-8 Alabama team into a 10-win squad two seasons later. In his first year, he led the Crimson Tide to a 7-5 record and a victory in the Independence Bowl after they began the season with a 3-5 mark. He also led Texas A&M to a nine-win season and three bowl games in five years.

Texas State vs Southern Miss Game Notes QUOTABLE Texas State head coach Dennis Franchione
Players
On how his team got better vs. PVAM “Individual players got better. That’s the first key for positions and units to get better. Offensively I don’t think there’s any doubt we executed pretty well. The first team improved. The second team wasn’t quite as crisp. Defensively, I think we thought we would play better than what we did. Their quarterback, running back and receivers gave us some challenges. We’re going to have to play better on that side of the ball.”
Texas State offensive tackle Ryan Melton On what he remembers in 2013 vs. So. Miss. “I remember playing them, they were very good. I’m not sure I was ready for their level of competition. They definitely played pretty well. I remember a field goal they blocked. I remember driving down on the last drive to win the game and the 3rd and 21 we converted for a first down and then scored and won the game.”
On playing peer conference school So. Miss. “This will be a tough game. Two even teams. It was a tough game two years ago when we went there and we had to drive it about 90 yards to win the game at the end and we fortunately made the plays. Got a big interception for a touchdown by Craig Mager. This is a better Southern Miss team than what we played two years ago.” On the program’s development since 2013 “We were dreadful in that game up front. Those guys are much better now, much more prepared for what’s ahead. You can’t put 650 yards of offense up against anybody if you’re not. Two years ago we played the same Prairie View team and it was 28-3. We had 28 by the end of hte first quarter on Saturday. It’s night and day.”
PRONUNCIATION GUIDE
On how the program has developed since 2013 “Our program has come a long way. Our offense put up alot of points against a good team. I think we still have a long way to go.” Texas State offensive tackle Adrian Bellard On adjusting to Southern Miss “Honestly it’s still the same. We go out and just play. Whoever we play we’re going to do our jobs, our 1/11th. Whatever the outcome is.” On 2013 game vs. Southern Miss “I mostly just remember the last drive when Tlyer [Arndt] gave us a chance to win and we ended up winning. They had two great defensive tackles that played in the league. I remember the win most of all.” On what he can take from that game in 2013 “It will be a great experience. We beat them before so we’re feeling confident about it. We’re going to come out here and work all week and see what the outcome is.
