Dear Reader,

Thank you for taking your precious time to look at this portfolio and get to know me a little more. I am honored to share with you my design journey and the many hidden stories behind it.

Coming from China - a country with a 5000-year-old culture yet is still facing many problems and make enormous efforts to grow every day, I grew up with colorful tales of tireless people and a culture that can never be forgotten. They are the tales that sometimes full of hope, while other times filled with a great deal of sorrow. I have always been immensely passionate about storytelling and using visual elements to deliver untold messages. Such beautiful narratives, as I believe, should be expressed more effective and widely diffused, that is also the reason I decided to become an interior designer.

By combining creative thinking, aesthetic taste, and problem-solving, I want to create spaces that convey the most interesting stories - those that are born to connect, unite, and inspire.

With an eclectic and multi-layered approach to design, I strive to forge strong connections with and between people. Each design will lead people through a journey that starts with visual clements and ends with emotions: excitement, nostalgia, and perhaps, a little bit of curiosity. I appreciate the process of exploring, not only with concepts and ideas but also with the stories and emotions that they deliver. As a designer, the mission that I've set for myself is to use art and design as a language to communicate with people while adorning cultural values - of a brand, a community, or a generation. Through my works, I want to focus on the definition of “we" rather than "me". By enhancing shared values and ideals of a community, I aim to draw a connection among people as well as ignite a sense of belonging and pride within them. With a culture-centered mindset, I believe that it is always important to consider the bigger picture of every problem and solve it wisely in a way that innovations and traditional values can co-exist and thrive.

NANA Cafe aims to provide residents of Mission Bay with a social and vibrant space. A unique idea of using fresh produce from local farms and markets to increase community awareness and raise awareness of potential social, economic and environmental issues related to farm-to-table restaurants. Riviera is an experienced entrepreneur and businessman who always puts charity first, and sometimes conducts classroom field trips in his restaurant to teach students basic business skills. "I come from a very poor family and have to support the family from a very young age. I know the struggles of disadvantaged children. I think I am lucky to be able to live as an adult and I believe you can get everything," he said.

NANA Cafe is his first farm-to-table restaurant. Tony Riviera bought a space at 185 Strait Street, San Francisco. 7,600 square feet of space is located at the bottom of The Channel. This will help promote urban communities to provide healthier food choices and prosperity for local market owners and farmers. With this powerful vision in mind, NANA Cafe's goal is to embrace the entire community. Therefore, in addition to using local ingredients, the restaurant will also open the door to community courses, where top chefs will not only educate and teach amazing cooking methods, but will also teach important social responsibilities, food inequality and community gardening. Make sure that this idea resonates in the community.

CONCEPT

The “Dalia” Senior Center concept highlights Mexico's national flower, the Dahlia.Mexico's love of flowers goes back to its distant ancestors. For the Mayans, flowers were sacred objects and played an important role in all religious ceremonies. Flowers in Mexico are one of the best gifts for friends. Dahlias are brightly colored, and Mexicans regard it as a symbol of generosity and happiness , representing good meaning and blessings.Inspired by flower petals, the design blends dynamic lines with a warm and generous touch that accentuates Mexican culture throughout the interior. Through a clever combination of light, line and bold colors. This interior design not only creates a comfortable environment for the elderly, but also provides a dynamic perspective for a modern and functional place.

“DALIA”

ROOT STRUCTURE

SITE LOCATION

Mission Revival Inheriting the Romantic style of early California, Mission Revival is one of the various Spanish-inspired revivals that began to gain traction in the early 1900s. The barracks at Presidio, a historic military base on the northern edge of the city, boasts circular bell-shaped mountain walls, red tile roofs, flat stucco walls and a Mission Revival promenade. Architects also chose to work in a more refined Spanish Colonial Revival or Mediterranean Revival style to create some of the city's most luxurious homes. The style can be seen in the Castro Theatre, one of Timothy Pfleger's most popular buildings.

SITE LOCATION

DESIGN NARRATIVE

Presidio's history and current status Encircling the north end of San Francisco, Presidio Park is a 14,491-acre Golden Gate National Conservation Area with one of the most scenic bays in the world, perfect for those with children, those who love adventure, those who want to explore history and those who simply want to relax. Presidio served as a U.S. military base from 1846 (before California was a state) until 1994. Today there are still more than 790 buildings that have served as examples of military structures that were once manned and fulfilled other military needs over the years. Thanks to strong preservation, many of the buildings here are so beautiful that they have been converted into attractions open to the public, including popular restaurants such as Sessions at the Presidio, Presidio Social Club and The Commissary. The Walt Disney Family Museum, also located here, features the personal history and talents of Mickey Mouse's creator.

Presidio District, San Francisco, California There are many cultural and historical buildings nearby, including restaurants, exhibition halls, schools, theaters, clubs, yoga studios, event lawns, train stations, theaters, and more. These leisure and entertainment venues, including transportation and dining, are all within walking distance. The design building has two floors and includes a basement. (Basement is not part of the design) The building is bounded by a lawn and yoga studio to the east, a parking lot as well as an event lawn to the west, a view of the bay and San Francisco’s famous Golden Gate Bridge to the north, and the most open area of the view, and a green lawn to the south. The entire building is surrounded by greenery and landscaping, andthere are no trees or tall buildings nearby to block the view. Because of the low speed limit, traffic noise will be controlled and the building will have plenty of sunlight on all sides. The area is mainly influenced by southwest winds and is in a seismic zone. The architecture represents the Mission Revival style, with architectural features of white walls and red roofs.

CONCEPT

The core spirit of National Geographic, “adventure, exploration and conservation,” is represented by the theme of “fearlessness” in this office space for National Geographic’s San Francisco office. “Fearless” is the heart of a person who is uncompromising, courageous, resilient and loyal. This design conveys the power of this word to inspire and represent the people who work here. Some colors that symbolize nature are also used extraordinarily in the design, such as green, blue, yellow and a little red, as well as some intermediate colors such as black white and gray series. These colors can clash with each other to show more life.

In the layout of the floor plan, you can see that most of the spaces have the application of natural light sources. The main function of the first floor is a place to receive visitors and showcase and reflect the company's values. This floor will have spaces such as showrooms, stores, cafes and receptions. The exhibition area is located to the left of the entrance, with a better view of light and sufficient space for display. The cafe is a semi-open space behind the reception, and will be designed with a dark background against the green furniture, which will be set up in a more casual and creative way. The store will have a number of display cases for books, photos, clothing and other types of merchandise. The second floor will have more intimate spaces than the second floor, such as private offices for different positions, and some open office spaces. In these spaces, the furniture is simpler and more ergonomic to create a comfortable working environment, and there is also some greenery in these spaces. And private spaces like conference rooms and reception rooms will be more formal, but the choice of furniture will still make them not too stereotypical and serious. In general, a large portion of the materials chosen will be wood, glass, colored paint, art installations, etc. These materials, in addition to enriching the space, will attempt to create a positive, energetic work space.

COMMERIAL & OFFICE DESIGN | 57

MOOD BOARD

Continuing with the "fearless" theme, rich colors were chosen to create thespace. The choice of furniture includes wood, marble, and different colors ofeco-friendly materials. The colors of the furniture include yellow, green, black, white, and gray, and the walls are treated with bright color contrast to supportthe theme of "fearlessness".The colors of the bathroom are relatively simple and neat, making the entirebathroom space brighter, while incorporating some modern design and ergonomic furniture details. The choice of flooring material will have a lot of variety, depending on thespace it serves. The color palette features light green color furniture in the lounge. The darkgreen and black collection includes woodentables and chairs in the cafe. There will also be some green plants in the showroom space with some artinstallations. The design wanted to show the power of nature, bright and vibrant colors, contrasting or harmonious colors

58 |PORTFOLIO _ TANG XUAN COMMERIAL & OFFICE DESIGN | 59

LEVEL 1 DESIGN GOALS

• To reflect the company's values and mission - the spirit of adventure and exploration, as well as the protection of nature and education for the public. Take advantage of the building's own good lighting to create a display space that reflects the company's culture, while applying environmentally friendly green materials to the furniture and interiors to complement the space.

• Let the natural light reach all spaces of the building as much as possible, which will reduce the application of light in the daytime, reduce the energy consumption of electricity, and reflect the company's adherence to the eco-friendly concept of respecting nature. At the same time, there will be more open spaces in the building, breaking the space pattern set by the original structural columns and creating a comfortable and gentle office environment.

• Public restrooms will be installed.

• The architectural style of Mission Revival will be continued in the interior spaces.

LEVEL 2 DESIGN GOALS

• Use rich colors and aesthetic concepts to divide the work space into different sections and themes to meet the needs of different employees and company departments.

• Allowing as much natural light as possible to reach all spaces in the building will reduce the use of light during the day, reduce electricity consumption, and reflect the company's ecofriendly philosophy of respecting nature. At the same time, there will be more open spaces in the building, breaking the space pattern defined by the original structural columns and creating a comfor able and gentle office environment.

• Public restrooms will be installed.

• Recreational areas, such as small dining areas and reading areas for staff. Space for communication and relaxation at work leisure.

• Partial privacy office space, but also to meet the full light

• Some professional office areas include equipment

CUSTOMER PROFILE

Family of five,Bo (39) and Jess (37), Bo is a classic design lover. Need absolute privacy (master bedroom, master bathroom, separate wardrobe). For their two children (2 and 4 years old), the house must be safe and non-slip. His mother Pearl (70 years old) lives on the third floor. The stairs must be of standard size, and the floor and staircase finishes should be non-slip to benefit the elderly. A large gathering area (living room, dining room) with at least 8 people is required.

PERSONAL INSIGHTS

When three generations live together, they will have different habits and lifestyles. I want to create a space that can span three generations.

The palette of this design uses bright neutral colors, such as beige, with different shades of yellow. Use the combination of dark green and yellow to create a classic atmosphere. Using moody colors, navy blue as the background wall finish will help expand the space , lines, motifs and delicate details through its patterns.

CONCEPT STATEMENT

The main function of the living room is for them to meet and chat, so I designed two large sofas and two chairs (accommodating 8 people) the fireplace to ensure that the guests come and there are places to sit down.

Next to the entrance, I created a small space for reading and resting, with bookshelves and a small sofa (accommodating 2 people). This space can be used when one or two people are in the living room.

Considering that it is a family of five, the male host likes classicism and set up a large long cabinet in the living room. In addition to the cabinet as a storage space, some collectibles, vases or sculptures are placed on the cabinet.
