Working at Allen Belot Architects, I have been given the opportunity to design multiple projects to be built in the near future. I have worked on the projects from conceptual design to prepared Construction Documents.
x
I have also been able to get out into the field for site visits and measurements.

I started out working for a pipe laying crew. My job was to make sure we avoided digging into locates, install/repair the pipes, and backfill to prepare for concrete.
x
I also worked with a tear out crew, where we replaced old concrete with new. This taught me a lot about how to read plans, and also how designs must sometimes be manipulated to work in the real world.

As the new member educator, I was in charge of the freshman class. Duties ranged from teaching them the history and traditions of our chapter via a class held every Monday night, to teaching them a choreographed song and dance performed in front of sororities. Above all, I was the new member’s mentor. Any questions involving academics, clubs and activities, and even personal issues were brought to me.

During my time as the DRM, it was my job to inform the University of events we were planning via an ENF, coordinate designated drivers, arrange security when necessary, as well as being the person people would contact in case of an emergency. Through my time as the DRM I was quickly taught maturity and also to be solution oriented.

I am a designer by nature. Sketching and building has always been a passion of mine, even when I was a child. Through schooling, I have learned to apply these creative ambitions to make them functional pieces of architecture. I have learned to love the process of creating a space, rather than just a building. Designing for the user experience and exploring methods of blending form with function is what continues to drive my pursuit of being an architect.

LAWRENCE, KANSAS The project for Studio 608 was to research building codes in Lawrence, Kansas. Based on that research, we were required to change an aspect of the code and design a mixed use building to be placed in a parking lot along Iowa Street. By code, primary structures are seperated vertically with commercial located on the bottom, and residential located above. I chose to alter this by stating all spaces must be seperated horizontally.
The concept came from a pattern we were asked to create. This pattern became the original arrangement of spaces, and influenced my decision to keep the spaces rounded. From the pattern, I developed a massing model splitting the building into 2 spaces, but eventually ended up joining all of the spaces. I decided to make the spaces circular, which allowed me to create private entrances for tenants of the apartment on the South Side. This also allowed me to set the main entrance in from the building so I could create a small courtyard in the main entrance.

Context is everything in architecture. To design, we must first understand the surrounding influences of a site. That is why for Arch 602, my goal was to design something contemporary, while also paying respect to the historical significance of downtown Lawrence.

First Floor A “floating” meditation space is eventually what became the narrative for this project. The “mind” spaces in our program were arranged in the middle form, while everything else circulated around it. The middle form is rotated 45 degrees to give a sense of destination to the lobby upon arrival, to which then tenants could circulate around.

A key element of this project is the screen system on the Level 2. It is transparent from the inside looking out, giving people working out a view to the exterior. However, from the outside looking in, it’s very opaque and will give tenants a sense of privacy. The screen system is comprised of 3 layers, the first being a glass panel, then a copper mesh, then an interior glass panel. We decided to use this technique to reinforce our idea of “floating,” and this would allow for natural lighting, privacy, and exterior views.

Surrounding the top meditation area is a rooftop terrace to be used for relaxation or outdoor classes. A green wall is centrally located in the lobby and stretches from basement to the top of Level 2 and is meant to give the spaces a biophilic feel..
3 Arch 508 Parkview Elementary KANSAS CITY, KANSAS The project for studio 508 was an elementary school to be located in the Crossroads District of downtown KC. There is currently a lack of vegetation in the Crossroads area and this school is meant to serve that need. Allowing nature into the building was the forefront of the school’s purpose.

A strong connection to the southfacing courtyard was essential, therefore I minimized the footprint of the building to allow the courtyard to fill the space. The school hosts grades K-5, each having their own flex space which opens up to the courtyard. The courtyard design is meant to section off areas where different activies could be held, while connected through a central walkway
