‘Fight abuse every day’ CHILTON MELLEM

The fight against women and child abuse should be fought every day of the year and not only during the 16 Days of Activism. With this message Kuils River, Kleinvlei and Mfuleni police stations joined hands on Tuesday 29 November to take a stand against women and child abuse as part of the global 16 Days of Activism

campaign, despite statistics showing that people don’t care. Brig Vincent Beaton, Kuils River cluster commander, said the results of a local survey done with regard to the campaign showed that 24 percent of people find it a waste of time, 60 percent did not pay any attention to it and 16 percent didn’t think the campaign was effective. He told the crowd that police are doing everything they can to combat woman and child abuse, but the community needs to join hands

with the police and law enforcement even though the statistics look bleak. Various schools from the area – including Bardale Village Primary School and Silversands Primary School were invited to the cluster operation which took place at the Blue Downs Sports Grounds. The day included plenty of entertainment for learners and visitors. The first item on the programme, the police’s marching band, got some learners so excited

that they started dancing and singing to the band’s belting tunes. Even though the day was filled with fun, the message of the campaign remained clear. “We try and stop the abuse of women and children 365 days a year,” said Col Luyanda Damoyi, station commander of Mfuleni Police Station. Captain Hugo Groenewald, chaplain of Kuils River police, told the crowd that if people allowed God to reign in their lives, then they would not have any reason to

beat women and children. Beaton said: “Even though 16 Days of Activism is aimed at combating abuse of women globally, here in South Africa we have included the abuse of children.” He said the three things that stood out for him in the constitution was the right to life, the right to human dignity and the right to privacy. After the formal addresses, learners were invited to play on the sports grounds and engage with police officials.

Website touching lives GARY VAN DYK

The TygerBurger website is reaching out to the world, and making a difference. Plans are under way for children in Blikkiesdorp in Delft to get a new playground in the new year, thanks to two young girls in Sydney Australia, wanting to make a difference. Sisters Chelsea, 9, and Charlotte, 5, Sandys-Silakivai, whose maternal grandparents are originally from South Africa, have become ambassadors for the project in Sydney to raise money for the playground. Lee Warren of the Blikkiesdorp 4 Hope project in the area was ecstatic when the story of their projects was carried on our website (TygerBurger, November 16). “We have seen the power of the world wide web, and Facebook working for positivity,” she said. “The children’s grandmother, Beryl Segers, got in touch with me after seeing the article

and the next thing they were offering to assist us. “It seems like it is going to be a family affair because her cousin Janine Kelly from RL Architects, who designed the Green Point Park, will be designing the playground for our beautiful children of Blikkiesdorp,” she said. When they go to their favourite playgrounds they make suggestions as to what would be good and have come up with ideas based on their school playground, snakes and ladders, chess boards and hopscotch – all painted on the concrete, and they want it for those children in Delft. “I still have strong roots in Cape Town so got in touch with my cousin from the architectural company, and they’re also helping. Just shows you the world has become a village with all this internet technology,” she said. DESIREÉ RORKE

Domestic workers can look forward to an early Christmas this year, thanks to a recent increase in minimum wages by the department of labour. As of 1 December, the minimum rate for a domestic worker in Cape Town for the next three years will be R8.34 per hour, R375.19 per week and R1 625.70 per month. In cases where the domestic worker works for fewer than 27 hours per week, the minimum wage is R9.85 per hour, R265.95 per week and R1 152.32 per month. In smaller municipalities the minimum wage is R7.06 per hour, R317.62 per week and

R1 376.25 per month. Although this eight percent increase somewhat helps to ease poverty, experts believe it is still a long way off from doing away with the current exploitation in this labour sector. “Even though the minimum wage has increased it is still ridiculous that these workers are paid so little. These rates should be seen as the absolute minimum to be paid and not as a general guideline,” said Bernard Reisner, an independent labour consultant in Cape Town. The minimum wage was laid down by labour minister Mildred Oliphant in terms of the Basic Conditions of Employment Act, which regulates this sector.

According to Reisner this minimum will be enforced by labour inspectors doing routine visits and can be made an order of court in terms of the abovementioned legislation. Reisner says that domestic workers across the city are paid anything from R4 000 per month to as little as R800 per month. “In suburbs such as Constantia I have come across domestic workers paid as much as R4 000, whereas in lower income areas, the wage is the bare minimum,” he said. A quick survey done in parts of the northern suburbs indicated an average wage of anything between R110 and R150 per day, where domestic workers work

only one or two days for a family. Where they are employed fulltime the average wage is estimated around R2 500 to R3 000 per month, depending on whether they live in or not. More and more families however opt for the “piece job” system where domestic workers work only one or two days per week, mostly due to the tougher economic climate. Reisner has published a booklet, You and Your Domestic Worker and the New Laws, which explains everything you need to know pertaining to your rights and that of your domestic worker. The booklet is available from 021 423 3959 for R49.

Police ask to clear scenes

Drug sale halted:

CHILTON MELLEM

It seems to be human nature to slow down at an accident scene or to crowd police at a crime scene, especially when it least concerns one. This has angered Kleinvlei police and they are warning the public to keep clear of crime scenes. Col Joan Stroebel, Kleinvlei Police station commissioner says in terms of legislation, any person interfering on a crime scene is committing a criminal offence. “The community does not seem to understand that if a crime scene is cordoned off, you can’t cross. Some people go as far as to ask for permission to cross the border onto the crime scene,” said Col Francois Andrews. Andrews explains that by hanging around at a crime scene, people can destroy evidence in the case. “We call off perimeters to protect the integrity of the investigation,” Andrews explained. Crime scenes can be dangerous and is no place for community members, no matter how angry they may be. Community members are asked to respect the work of the police as this is a sensitive situation. With less interference police are able to solve cases more rapidly. If one should arrive at a crime scene before the police, it is asked that nothing be touched or removed from the scene, Andrews said.

School child robbed CHILTON MELLEM

Children have been the victim of robberies lately according to Sgt Carmen Marinus of Kleinvlei Police Station. A learner from Malibu High School was robbed while he was walking to school at 07:20. According to Marinus, the learner claimed that an unknown man asked him for the time. He ignored the man and proceeded to walk on. The man then grabbed the learner, pulled out a firearm, cocked it and pointed it at him. The learner was then stripped of his watch and iPod. Kleinvlei police are urging learners not to walk alone to school but in groups or to catch a lift to school. Marinus says learners do not have to go to school so early anymore as the year ends.

More plots at cemeteries There is more burial space now at the Welmoed cemetery with the completion of the Welmoed extension cemetery. The cemetery situated between Eerste River and Kuils River was short of burial space, thus the area next to the original Welmoed cemetery were extended by the City. According to information provided by the City of Cape Town’s parks department the new burial areas are fully operational and burials have begun here at the beginning of November. Currently the Welmoed cemetery has a maximum of ten burials per day, but the City aims to increase this limit next year. The Welmoed cemetery offers a choice between private full monumental graves and berm graves.

Sex workers seem to be on the increase in Blue Downs according to Col Francois Andrews from Kleinvlei police. These are “elements” which the police are not too pleased about. According to Andrews most of the clients seem to be married men. Community members are warned that if they are found making use of sex workers’ services, they will be arre-

Berm graves are a cheaper option and limit the family to headstones only. No monumental work is allowed to be done on the surface of the grave. Families can also request the use of these two private grave options for second burials if families request a re-opening and sufficient depth is confirmed. Second burials or burials on top of another family member causes no disturbance of the first buried coffin in any way. This practice is therefore being encouraged so as to provide more space in existing cemeteries. Through tip offs received from the community, police were able to stop a suspect from Eerste River selling drugs. W/O Keith Fortune and Const Cornel Jaars were warned of drug sales in Beverely Street and acted upon this. They were able to catch a 23yearold man on Friday morning selling mandrax. Police were able to confiscate seven mandrax tablets and R40, which is the price of one mandrax pill. The suspect will be charged with the possession of drugs.

Graduation for Elsen CHILTON MELLEM

The end of the year usually means graduation for some and for learners in the Elsen unit of RR Franks Primary School, it was no different. What makes these learners unique however, is that they are the first group of learners to graduate from the Elsen unit since its opening. The Elsen unit is run by Mac Frantz, who is assisted by two parents in the community. It has been in existence for three years and will be a four-year programme for future learners. It was accepted that not everybody has the same learning capability and this was the initiative behind the Elsen unit. The children in the unit are between 13 and

14 years of age. The purpose of the unit is to bridge the gap between primary school and the school of skills where these learners will be going to. Learners are taught computer literacy, needle work and even how to work in a salon or barber. Learners are fed a meal a day which is cooked by Frantz and her assistants. Money is also raised for the unit by the team, by selling chicken over weekends. Frantz expresses how proud she is of the class and claims they have started a choir that show great potential. “They show a lot of potential in the community and I am so grateful for the two parents helping me, who share this vision with me,” Frantz said.

Proud teens graduate CHILTON MELLEM

Students at Teen Challenge paraded in their robes as they graduated from their 12-month programme on Sunday. The graduation ceremony was held at the Enon Tabernacle Baptist Church which is the church that started Teen Challenge. Clergy from the Enon’s mother church in the United States also attended the ceremony along with the US consul representative, Cynthia Brown. Teen Challenge is a rehabilitation centre in the heart of Eerste River and makes provision to help youth overcome their struggles with drugs, gangsterism and prostitution. The organisation was founded by Rev Dr Jacobus Nomdoe in 1998 and has helped many youth since then. Some of the youth have come back to Teen Challenge to work as youth leaders and counsellors. This is one of the ways of giving back to the community and showing their gratitude. “Teen Challenge plays a critical role in society combating gangsterism, drugs and unwanted pregnan-

cies,” Brown acknowledged. Some of the graduates volunteered to share some of their testimonies of the person they used to be before entering the programme. One by one graduates shared their stories of belonging to gangs and being addicted to drugs. Tears flowed not only from the eyes of testifiers but from their families as well. Acknowledgement was given to families who came to support their children on their graduation.

Celebrating a 21st birthday is a milestone in anybody’s life, but when Enon Tabernacle Baptist Church turned 21 this weekend, it was celebrated by the entire community. Just like most 21st birthdays, the Enon congregation celebrated its birthday with glitz and glamour in the form of a black tie event. Guests were treated like royalty as a red carpet was laid at the entrance and door stewards stood ready to welcome everyone. Some of their VIP guests included Col Joan Stroebel, station commissioner of Kleinvlei Police Station, and ward councillor Wilma Brady. But the guest list did not stop there as they had guests from their mother church in the United States join in on the celebration. MC at the event was Quinton Mathews, who is a youth leader at Teen Challenge, a rehab for

gangsters, drug addicts and prostitutes. Teen Challenge is just one of the various programmes that Enon has started in the community. The keynote speaker was Rev Dr Jacobus Nomdoe, who addressed guests and gave them insight into how the church started. He told everyone that God showed kindness through all their difficulties. He also made mention that today they had been blessed with three churches and no bond. Youth workers and pastors who have worked at Teen Challenge were also acknowledged by him. “You have worked for almost nothing and yet you go more than the extra mile,” Nomdoe said. A very excited Nomdoe shared his plans for the future of the church with everyone. Next year they plan to build a church in Gauteng and move to other provinces like the Free State and Northern Cape.

“I love my job, I can tell you these people are not where they used to be and they are on their way to greater things,” said Quinton Mathews, Teen Challenge youth leader. Mathews said Parliamentary members threatened to close Teen Challenge for its Christian orthodox manner of rehabilitation and not complying with the way other rehabs operated. Today Teen Challenge still stands and continues to open its doors to youth in need.

Public say on new names The City of Cape Town will ask its subcouncils to start a public participation process as soon as possible, regarding a set of suggested new names for Cape Town streets.

Laaste groente geoes:

The request was made by the City’s newly established naming committee under the chairmanship of mayoral committee member for transport, roads and stormwater, Brett Herron. The committee met last week to discuss the way ahead for the City’s street renaming plans. “This committee’s task is to make recommendations to Council on naming and renaming in terms of the naming policy. We will proceed from the basis that we need to work in a transparent and inclusive manner and that we need to ensure adequate and extensive public consultation and participation,” said

Herron. The previous City administration had started the renaming process under an advisory panel then chaired by Ms Rhoda Khadalie. Following lengthy deliberations, a list of 31 name change proposals had been recommended to be approved and implemented by Council. “It is these name change proposals which subcouncils will be asked to put through a public participation process under the auspices of the City’s public participation unit.” The committee concurred that this policy had to be sensitive and inclusive of all people affected by it if it were to stand any chance of being successful. “A group of 18 experts were put forward as possible members ... ” said Herron. . The naming committee consists of five representatives from the Democratic Alliance, and two councillors from the ANC.

Police canine unit needs more dog donations The Western Cape K9 unit is appealing to the public to donate any unwanted yet suitable dogs for the application of police duties. Dogs must be between the ages of six months and two years, not a cross breed, able to walk on a leash and not show signs of being afraid

of people. Suitable breeds include border collies, German shepherds, labradors, Belgian shepherds, bloodhounds, and rottweilers. For more information contact Warrant Officer Jacques Muller on 021 506 2063.

Grade 6 and 7 Learners from RR Franks Primary School were sponsored by AGS Church in Bellville to attend a life skills camp in Matroosberg, Ceres. This camp takes place twice a year and the funds are generated from the businessmen in the church. Here are the 20 learners chosen to go on the camp.

In ’n ander soortgelyke voorval is R15 000 se juweliersware twee jaar gelede by Anita Moorcroft van La Domaine-singel in Blommendal in Bellville gesteel.

Tyger berg Zoopark is three baby raccoons richer. Photo: André Bakkes

‘Aw cute’ reaction ANDRÉ BAKKES

Dangerously high levels of cuteness are emitting from one of the cages in Tygerberg Zoopark. Those who get close to the three newly-born baby raccoons could suffer from involuntary “aaawwwws” and wholly silly expressions. TygerBurger went to the zoo outside Kraaifontein last week to get to the bottom of this unfounded raccoon claim. It turned out to be true. When the people entered the raccoons’ cage, the older siblings and the mother used their cuteness to dreadful effect. Big inquisitive eyes followed our every movement and the mother hung upside down in the cage while doing her best impression of a carnivore ready to pounce if something should happen to her young. And right in the corner of a wooden box, the three kits were huddling together in a big ball of fur. “Aaaaaaawwww” exclaimed this journal-

ist with a silly expression. The best thing to do in such a scenario is to get really technical. These intelligent mammals are from the Procyon (before dog, or dog-like) genus and one of the translations for its name is “the one who rubs, scrubs and scratches with its hands”. One of the kits rubbed, scrubbed and scratched with its hands. “Aaaaaawwwww!” The owner of the zoo, Lorraine Spence, agreed, “Aren’t they just the most adorable things you’ve ever seen?” An absent-minded question of whether they bite was rebutted by Spence when she mused: “Anything with teeth bites.” After a few quick, disconcerting camera flashes the kits could once again huddle up in their big furry ball. The intruders were gone – deactivate cuteness. The raccoons are only fooling themselves. Please note: Besides “aaaawwwss” and silly looks, exposure to high levels of cuteness can also result in a 287 word article.

Prank calls no joke MARANA BRAND VAN HULSTEYN

Seventy percent of all calls made to the City’s 107 Public Emergency Communication Centre (PECC) are prank or nuisance calls – mostly made by schoolchildren playing jokes.

don’t say anything at all,” Smith said. Ellis said in many instances the callers are children merely “playing” with the phone. He said it is unfortunate, however, that operators have to be subjected to “extremely unpleasant utterances and comments” from the prank callers. Smith said it is an offence to make a prank call to emergency services, but it is difficult to track down the perpetrators. According to Ellis, most of these nuisance calls are made from public phones and are short-lived. “While the exact location of these phones is available on our systems, it is extremely difficult to catch the perpetrators.” Smith called on parents to educate their children about emergency services and their importance. “They should teach their children that it is wrong to make prank calls,” he said. . The PECC is a multidisciplinary emergency contact centre within the City of Cape Town’s safety and security directorate.

These shocking statistics came to light after TygerBurger enquired about the workload of the centre. During August, September and October this year, the centre handled about 30 000 calls per month. Of these roughly 20 000 each month were prank calls, John Ellis, PECC manager, said. This is consistent with the same period in previous years. Unfortunately these calls can cause delays in the ability to answer other calls relating to life or property threatening situations, which could lead to resultant losses, Ellis explains. These figures do not include “hoax” calls where someone claims to have a critical situation and when emergency services arrive, it simply is not. For example, people say they are seriously hurt or in extreme danger while they are only suffering from a headache or “heard something” in the back yard. According to JP Smith, the City’s mayoral committee member for safety and security, it can be assumed that these hoax calls are often made simply to get attention. “Sometimes people also call when they just need a ride to the hospital.” Most prank callers are schoolchildren. “The number of prank calls increases after school hours and over all school holidays. “Normally they just swear at the Prank calls can be the cause of a life and death situati operator, are extremely rude or on for others with real emergencies.

And the winners are ... Nicola Neutt from Muizenberg and her fiancé, Christo Kruse, are the winners of the TygerBurger/Spring FAB WinaWedding competition. They have won a wedding valued at R77 350. Nicola and Christo have been engaged since March and plan on getting married late next year.

Make time for magical walk among the birds ANDRÉ BAKKES

A sun and dusky conure. A blackcapped lorry.

Every enclosure at the World of Birds is as charming as the next. monkeys. “They are so trusting that a mother and her young will literally sit on your shoulder!” A huge number of animals have been injured in the “wild” and are now recuperating in the park, while others have been purchased or donated to add some variety. Louw says there was a time when

they encouraged breeding, but now it’s solely up to the birds whether they “do it or not”. One particular story springs to his mind when asked if birds are intelligent: “A long time ago we tried to breed the goffin cockatoo, so we put two in each cage, which were then placed in a long row. But the next day all their enclosures were

open. “This happened for a few nights until we decided to ‘stake’ them out. We saw that once we had closed everything, one of the goffin would stick his foot out and open his latch, and then it would open everybody else’s!” This well-maintained and intimate park went through a difficult

period in 2010 when the number of visitors declined by 20 000. At that stage it owed the bank and suppliers well over a million rand. Talks of possible closure were, however, nipped in the bud by an anonymous well-wisher when she donated R100 000 into the park’s bank account. Louw says they phoned all the people with the same surname and then finally found and thanked her. Her continuous donations since then have ensured that the park will soon boast zero debt, and staying true to a sign by the entrance, will continue to “soar on multi-coloured wings into the vast blue freedom of the beyond”. Enquiries: World of Birds Wildlife Sanctuary, 021 790 2730. OGILVY CAPE TOWN 47492/E/3

While walking through the surreal World of Birds Wildlife Sanctuary in Hout Bay it’s easy to become overwhelmed. There’s simply too much to experience. Admiring crazily colourful parrots, shoe-pecking crows and wingdragging turkeys alone can take up to two hours – and there are 400 different species there, ranging from birds to mammals and reptiles. TygerBurger dropped by the biggest bird park in Africa to see if it’s worth the trip and entrance fee. The first of the 100 aviaries on the four hectare sanctuary was enough to make the trip worthwhile (it was filled with nature’s clowns – parrots). Animal enthusiast and park manager, Hendrik Louw, says with a smile: “We drive north to go visit wine farms, so they should drive out here to experience wildlife in the city.” He reasons one should make a day trip out of it, because it takes “interested” visitors about three hours to walk through all the enclosures. Photographers should double that and take extra batteries. Louw continues: “Where else can one picnic with flamingoes? Yet, one of our biggest attractions is the ‘monkey jungle’, which contains 27

Cracker of an Xmas While things always go better with CocaCola, this year it will be bringing some Christmas cheer to children at a community centre in Elsies River. This year the bottlers of the popular refreshment, the Peninsula Beverage Company (Pty) Ltd and the V&A Waterfront have joined forces to bring Christmas cheer to children in less fortunate areas and are calling on the public to support their initiative. In a creative approach to a Christmas toy drive, a large branded Christmas Cracker, measuring 1.5 by 6 metres, will be positioned at the Wheel of Excellence in the Waterfront until Friday 9 December. Visitors are encouraged to bring along toys which they can donated by placing them through a shoe box-sized slot in the cracker. All the toys collected during this time will be donated to the Tehillah Community Centre in Elsies River. The centre renders a holistic service to people facing socio-economic challenged situations such as poverty, unemployment, TB and HIV/Aids. It also provides TB and HIV/ Aids preventative programmes and an open door to victims of abuse, especially women and children. They also run various youth development outreach programmes in the community. There are currently 101 children housed at Tehillah who would benefit greatly from some Christmas cheer. Chantelle Kidd, marketing executive at the V&A Waterfront said that they were honoured to support such an initiative. “The giant cracker fittingly joins the Crate Man at the Waterfront this year and we are privileged and honoured to support an initiative that will benefit the community in which we operate directly and gladly give the cracker pride of place at the heart of the V&A Waterfront’s most highly visible and visited area,” she said. “We look forward to giving each child at Tehillah Community Centre their own personalised gift this year at a Christmas party that will be sponsored by PenBev,” says Denise Green, corporate social responsibility manager for the company. For more information about Tehillah Community Centre visit http://www.tehillah.za.org. For PenBev information see www.penbev.co.za.

Fitness course for ‘busy’ The Sports Science Institute of South Africa will be hosting a new eight-week programme for those trying to reach their health and fitness goal. GO-4-IT, the new programme, is aimed at those living a life in the business world, and find themselves lacking the energy or enthusiasm to fulfil their fitness goals. The programme starts with a health and fitness test to determine one’s individual needs, which is then looked at by a trained biokineticist who designs the training programme. Three to five sessions a week are to be expected, depending on individual needs, with one

being a one-on-one supervised session, to ensure that all the excercises are being done correctly. Other benefits of GO-4-IT include a full membership of the SSISA Wellness and Fitness Centre for the duration of the course, consults with a psychologist or dietitian, online support from an exercise fundi and a New Balance togbag. The next series of GO-4-IT courses start mid January, which is the perfect time to start tackling the new year. Contact Kathleen Mc Quaide-Little on 021 659 5600 or fit@ssisa.com or visit the website at www.ssisa.com.

Safety plan set to reduce WC road fatalities In an attempt to reduce the fatalities on Western Cape roads, provincial government decided to bolster resources to increase safety. The Safely Home road safety plan for the festive season was recently launched by Western Cape ministers Dan Plato (community safety), Robin Carlisle (transport and public works), and Theuns Botha (health). The safety plan will aim to integrate the approach between the ministries, including roadblocks, management of public transport vehicles and speeding, number plate recognition, and available law enforcement personnel. “Together with all other law enforcement agencies we are bolstering resources to increase safety and combating reckless behaviour on our roads. Last weekend alone 12 fatalities were recorded in the province and we are leaving no stone unturned to prevent incidents from happening in the first place,” said Plato. “During this period all our law enforcement operations will be integrated with SAPS

and local traffic departments as well as other role players like SARS and home affairs. Our integrated weekend alcohol operations will continue during this period and motorists can be assured that in this province they will be stopped and tested for driving under the influence.” Carlisle urged motorists to call the provincial traffic radio control number immediately if they observe dangerous or reckless driving. “A special appeal goes out to passengers on buses and taxis. Report your drivers if they drive recklessly. We will ensure that as far as our resources allow, every call is followed up.” Botha added the N1 route will have rescue vehicle and ambulance response available in Beaufort West, Laingsburg and Leeu Gamka with paramedics and rescue technicians available. “Cape Town will staff its normal complement of operational vehicles ... “ . Darren blows up historic storm at UCT “Then Kuit introduced me to Miles Davis, and I honestly fell in love with the tone of his sound – that inspired me then and still does today.” Having “grown up” on the local scene at various jam sessions around town, he has also experienced that there are many young people who are being inspired to get into the music. “Just visit UCT and you will discover a generation of us young cats getting into this groove,” he says. “People are talking rubbish when they try to say we don’t

GARY VAN DYK

A young trumpeter from Strandfontein has blown himself into the record books of UCT music school. Darren English has become the first student who has achieved a hundred percent mark for both of his honours recitals, something that has never been achieved in the history of the university. The first time that I heard Darren English play the trumpet, he was in Grade 9 at Muizenberg High, and after discovering that he had only been playing for six months, I realised that this was a unique talent in the making. Move forward to 2011 and those predictions have come true. This young man has grown into a seasoned musician on the local scene, playing at a range of gigs from those with his mentors guitarist Alvin Dyers and sax man Mark Fransman, to touring the globe as part of Jimmy Dludlu’s band, and performing with pop icon Loyiso at the Devo’s concert this year. He also features as soloist on Professor Mike Campbell’s new Big Band album, there’s also various shows at the Baxter but one of the most significant projects that he is working on is what he calls George. “This project is dedicated to my late grandfather, George Liederman, who always supported me, and it is a suite of works featuring a string quartet,” he says. He looks back at his achievements in disbelief. “I really never expected that

like the music. There are many of us who are not fooled by the mediocrity that they try to sell us. “Fred Kuit has recently informed me that schools are starting jazz as a study subject as from next year. I really admire Kuit for his constant effort in trying for years to get jazz taught at schools as a subject. It’s finally happening, and I’m really happy about that. “I received a full scholarship to do my Master’s Degree at Georgia State University in the USA, as from next year September for two years. I will be mentored by Gordon Vernick on trumpet and drums.”

Photo: Gary van Dyk mark, especially not for my first recital, as we never had a single rehearsal,” he laughs. “I just told the musicians to come and play, and we had a swingin’ session. Same with my final recital, we just ran through the tunes roughly, and we just had fun, there’s no other way to put it.” During his second recital the young musician also got an idea to try something that has never been done in a serious recital, he played trumpet and flugelhorn simultaneously. “We played a McCoy Tyner composition called “Passion Dance” as the last tune, and I never planned to play both instruments simultaneously, but I felt like trying some-

thing new that no one is doing, or at a recital of all places. “It was quite funny, as people didn’t know what they were seeing or hearing, having phrases sounding like two trumpet players playing at the same time. “The idea was originally a kind of joke, but it is slowly becoming something that people know me for doing. I actually got offered a few gigs just because of that,” he adds. Looking back at what started his love for the trumpet he remembers that it was love that his teacher Fred Kuit had for the music. “I remember him asking if I’d like to play the trumpet and from there on I remained after school every single day just practising and practising.

Make holidays safe and happy MARANA BRAND VAN HULSTEYN

After a long, rainy winter many of us look forward to returning to the outdoors for afternoon braais, picnics and lazing around the pool. An unfortunate fact is, however, that every year as temperatures increase, so do the number of poolside accidents. Drowning is the second leading cause of unintentional injury-related death among children ages one to 14 and the leading cause of death among children ages one to four. About 350 children under five drown in our pools each year. Another 2 600 children are treated in hospital emergency rooms each year for near-drowning incidents, and many suffer brain damage as a result. The sad fact of the matter is that the vast majority of these accidents happen in backyard pools, not the sea. While children also drown in buckets, ponds, dams, the sea, rivers and even in drains, the Child Accident Prevention Foundation of South Africa says the most likely cause of death for children under five in well-to-do homes is drowning in the family pool. And enough pools we South Africans have – almost a million, mainly in middle to upper income households. In most homes, there is no appliance, device or gadget that has the same potential for personal disaster than a swimming pool.

Never leave children unsupervised in swimming pools. To top it all, drowning usually occurs very quickly – under five minutes – and also very silently, often without any splashing or screaming. It not only happens when swimming; often kids fall into the pool fully clothed. Only 5cm of water is enough to cause drowning.

The key to preventing these tragedies is to have layers of protection, the experts say. Here are some tips to prevent drowning: 1. Supervision, supervision, supervision. A child should never swim alone. Always know where your children are. 2. Children should learn how to

swim as soon as possible. It’s equally important for them to be trained in survival skills such as floating and treading water, also with their clothes on, but this doesn’t mean that they can be left alone. 3. Swimming pools must be properly fenced off and have a childproof lock on the gate.

The gate must never be left open. Make sure there is nothing for your child to climb onto near the pool like pot plants or trees. 4. To protect a child fully, add a professionally installed pool safety net to cover your pool and check the net regularly. 5. Warn against boisterous play in or near water. A dam wall or the area around a swimming pool is no place for riding a bicycle. 6. Children should never dive or jump into water they are unfamiliar with. 7. Knowing first aid (CPR) can be a life saver. 8. Remember buoyancy aids such as inflatable wings, tubes, etc. are only aids. Don’t rely solely on their protection. 9. For above-ground pools, steps and ladders to the pool should be secured and locked, or removed when the pool is not in use. As far as the sea is concerned, constant supervision of children is necessary even in shallow water. The sea is unpredictable – a lilo or floating toy may easily be swept away – with your child on it. To allow a child in a boat or canoe without a lifejacket is asking for trouble. The same applies for fishing from the rocks. . Free water safety leaflets are available from Childsafe and Red Cross Children’s Hospital among others.

Training starts Ravensmead Soccer Club will be starting pre-season training on Thursday 5 January 2012 for seniors. Juniors will start on Tuesday 21 February. Prospective players are welcome to attend. Further information about the club from Rubin Faulman on 021 5905479 (w) or 021 933 3584 (h), cell is 082 3067003.

Topnotch waterskiing for lake The country’s top tournament waterskiers will be descending on the picturesque Bon Esperance lake just south of Malmesbury for four days of skiing.

Elizna Schutte

The competition includes a night slalom competition tomorrow night, and the West Coast Championship which culminates on Sunday. The large field of nearly 40 skiers representing all age groups will participate in all three tournament disciplines – namely slalom skiing around buoys, thrilling ramp jumping and trick skiing. Several Western Province waterskiers have fared well at international tournaments this year, with Gabriella Viljoen, 18, hoping to improve on her astonishing half buoy on 11,25 metres in slalom to break yet another South African record. Senior skier Jan Johnson took her third gold medal at the European/African (EA) Championship for slalom this year, and is currently ranked number two in the world in her age group. Fifteenyear old Eamon van der Merwe, from

Parklands College, was the youngest skier to qualify for the EA u-21 Championship taking place in Kakamas, South Africa next year, and he had a podium result for slalom at the EA u-17 Champs in Europe this year. Other top skiers worth watching include Durbanville High School’s Louis Schutte and dramatic ramp jumper Simon Fairbank from Milnerton amongst a sprinkling of Namibian skiers. Skiing gets under way at 08:00 each day from Friday, with the night skiing starting tomorrow at 20:00. Entrance is free. Bon Esperance is situated on the N7, just 15 kilometres south of Malmesbury.
