BIG ROAR AT BLIND SCHOOL On Sunday approximately 400 motorcyclists from 20 clubs did their bit for charity when they donated gifts to the learn ers of the Athlone School for the Blind. Here some of the learners get to meet the bik ers and their mean machines. Established in 1927, the school has a proud history of providing specialised educa tion and residential care for blind, visually impaired and multiple disabled learners. Photo: Gary van Dyk

) Festive season ‘good time to give’

Help for victims of fire GARY VAN DYK

Fires are destroying the festive season for some families in the area, but there’s a call to help them. This past weekend two wendy houses were destroyed by fires in the Bishop Lavis area, and in Bellville South some families were also affected in Stilwaney Crescent. In Bishop Lavis the Counselling and Social Development Centre is coming to the rescue of those affect-

ed and calling on the community to assist in bringing back some joy during this festive season. Ann Nero of the centre said that they felt the need to help these families because everything had been destroyed. “We felt that we cannot just stand by and do nothing to help these people,” she said. “There are also young children involved and they have lost all their clothes. We feel that this is a time for the community to come together and help where they can because

this season is also a time for giving to those in need, and these people have lost everything. “We are calling on donations of any kind that people feel will help the families that have been affected,” she said. The CSD Centre can be contacted on 021 934 1023 for more information and donations. In Bellville South there is also a need for help and the community has already started helping out local councillor, Mercia Kleinsmith. She said that at the time of the in-

cident her first priority was getting shelter for these families and requested help from the Council who supplied building starter sets for the families as an emergency measure, which is normal for such situations. However, her concerns went beyond shelter and she felt that there is a need to help these families with all they lost in the fires. “It is important for us in the community to come together during this season to show that we care about the disadvantaged.

“I have already started getting in some donations from local businesses but feel that there are more people who would like to assist us with these people. “Apart from clothes and non-perishable foods we would also welcome donations of small appliances, like a broom and cleaning material to help them get back on their feet. Even toiletries,” she said. For further information about donations needed Kleinsmith can be contacted on 071 4183 032 or 021 951 3367 during office hours.

The courts have acted on some cases from the area. Two criminals are facing stiff sentences after good investigative work from Bishop Lavis police put them behind bars. In the first case that relates to an incident that happened on Wednesday June 22, a young man faces a sentence of eight years for possession of an illegal firearm and ammunition. At approximately 16:30 on the day of the incident W/O Roy Arries and Const Zola Dukiso received information about an illegal gun at a residence in Almond Street, Netreg. During their search of the house they found a man sleeping in one of the rooms.

ga were waiting for a train at Netreg Station. When Kolokoto’s phone rang and she answered it, two men pointed guns at them and robbed them of their cellphones, and then ran away. Masevhe then saw a security guard and asked for help, but they could not find the suspects. While the complainant was still waiting for the train to arrive he noticed one of the men who robbed them. The security guard then arrested the man and called the police. Further investigation by Det Const Jaco de Jager led to Xavier Valentino, 21, from Vaal Road, Bishop Lavis receiving a sentence of eight years’ imprisonment for robbery with aggravating circumstances.

Further investigation revealed a gun and ammunition under his pillow, which he admitted was his, but he did not have a licence for the weapon. Det Const Jaco de Jager followed up on the incident which led to 24-year-old Kurt Seas receiving a sentence of eight years’ imprisonment for possession of a firearm and possession of ammunition without licence. In another case that related to an incident that happened on Monday 23 May another young man will also be spending eight years in jail for robbery with aggravating circumstances. Domestic workers can look forward to an early Christmas this year, thanks to a recent increase in minimum wages by the department of labour. As of 1 December, the minimum rate for a domestic worker in Cape Town for the next three years will be R8.34 per hour, R375.19 per week and R1 625.70 per month. In cases where the domestic worker works for fewer than 27 hours per week, the minimum wage is R9.85 per hour, R265.95 per week and R1 152.32 per month. In smaller municipalities the minimum wage is R7.06 per hour, R317.62 per week and R1 376.25 per month. Although this eight percent increase somewhat helps to ease poverty, experts believe it is still a long way off from doing away with

the current exploitation in this sector. “Even though the minimum wage has increased it is still ridiculous that these workers are paid so little. These rates should be seen as the absolute minimum to be paid and not as a general guideline,” said Bernard Reisner, an independent labour consultant. The minimum wage was laid down by labour minister Mildred Oliphant in terms of the Basic Conditions of Employment Act, which regulates this sector. According to Reisner this minimum will be enforced by labour inspectors doing routine visits and can be made an order of court in terms of the abovementioned legislation. Reisner says that domestic workers across the city are paid anything from R4 000 per month to as little as R800 per month. “In suburbs such as Constantia I have come across domestic workers paid as much

as R4 000, whereas in lower income areas, the wage is the bare minimum,” he said. A quick survey done in parts of the northern suburbs indicated an average wage of anything between R110 and R150 per day, where domestic workers work only one or two days for a family. Where they are employed full-time the average wage is estimated around R2 500 to R3 000 per month, depending on whether they live in or not. More and more families however opt for the “piece job” system where domestic workers work only one or two days per week. Reisner has published a booklet, You and Your Domestic Worker and the New Laws, which explains everything you need to know pertaining to your rights and that of your domestic worker. The booklet is available from 021 423 3959 for R49.

March against crime GARY VAN DYK

A sports event in Elsies River was about more than sport when they marched against crime in the area. Members of the Meltonians Soccer Club and participants in their soccer and netball tournaments took to the streets of Clarke Estate last week before the games began to show how sport can play a part in fighting crime in the community. The club hosted the tournament in Clarke Estate in memory of their former chairman, Llwellyn “Wakkie” Perrang, who died a few years ago. Marlon Fortuin, of the club, said that the march and tournament was a great success as teams from the area came together in his memory.

Players get ready for their march through the streets of Clarke Estate before the start of the tournament.

“Wakkie would have been proud of us as we came together in his memory because he was always passionate about making a difference in the lives of our youth through sport,” he said. “The day was a success because the march already showed that many youth in our community were fed up with all the crime and gangsterism in their communities. “Through sport they can see that their lives can be positive and there is no place for criminal activity for healthy communities. “We want to thank the soccer clubs that took part in the spirit of sportsmanship: Red Devils of Uitsig, Future Stars of Delft, and Dale Road Spurt of Clarke Estate. “The referees and management of all the teams, players and supporters all played their part in making this a fantastic event. “The event was emotional but showed that positive heroes are never forgotten.”

Councillor helps with ‘red tape’ GARY VAN DYK

A local councillor has launched a unique Community in Action campaign to help solve problems in Valhalla Park. Nas Abrahams, councillor for Ward 14, which comprises Valhalla Park and sections of Bishop Lavis, recently conducted research in the area that revealed many problems in the area that were going unreported. “It is not just here, but in all areas that there are a large percentage of our people struggling to cope with their rent, rates and water accounts. “Many of them do not realise that The City of Cape Town has an indigent policy in place specially for those who cannot afford to pay their full instalments. “Arrangements can be made at the local housing offices in regard to these situations but I have discovered that our people do not

want to consult with the housing offices. “Many residents say that they are treated badly and are being verbally abused by housing officials. If any person has a complaint of this nature they have to report it to the councillors or subcouncil manager who will address the alleged complaint. “Residents also said that complaints lodged regarding maintenance issues are not being addressed or take ages. Residents must insist on a reference number before they leave the housing offices,” he said. He continued that the purpose of the Community in Action Campaign was to create an opportunity to lodge their complaints without fear and to interact with officials of the City of Cape Town on a face to face basis. “We hosted a very successful event at the Bishop Lavis Community centre where the community was invited to give their complaints to representatives of the various de-

partments of the Council. “One of the misconceptions that we have discovered is that word is being spread in the communities that the Water Management Devices are a prepaid meter; it is not a prepaid meter it is a device that controls how much water is being used. Arrears are scrapped completely if residents install a Water Management Device at their homes. “The next campaign will be extended to all wards and areas in the near future. In the meantime residents must consult with the housing offices if they have problems. Please do not wait until it is too late.” Information is also available from subcouncil chairperson, Rose Rau on 083 406 2023, and sub-council manager Martin Julie on 084 2221 482 or 021 695 8160.

Touching lives of others via our website were way ahead of her when they saw the conditions for children in Blikkiesdorp. “It is no accident that Chelsea has already become quite aware of her social responsibility. When she was four she became the youngest child in Australia to receive a bravery award for coming to her mother’s rescue when she found her unconscious on the floor at home. “She also became the Young Citizen of the Year and gets invited to Australia Day dinners by our local council and other events. “Along with her younger sister Charlotte they are ambassadors to raise funds for this project, and making people aware of how they can help with projects like this. “They are already actively involved in raising funds for a mother and baby clinic in Bali. “When they saw the playground photos on the website, they were so moved and said we must help the children to have a beautiful playground. When they go to their favourite playgrounds they make suggestions as to what would be good and have come up with ideas based on their school playground, snakes and ladders, chess boards and hopscotch – all painted on the concrete, and they want it for those children in Delft. “I still have strong roots in Cape Town so got in touch with my cousin from the architectural company, and they’re also helping. Just shows you the world has become a village with all this internet technology,” she said. For more information about the Blikkiesdorp 4 Hope projects go to www.blikkiesdorp4hope.co.za.

The TygerBurger website is reaching out to the world, and making a difference.

The existing playground in Blikkiesdorp. Two young girls in Australia want to transform it into something special.

Plans are under way for children in Blikkiesdorp in Delft to get a new playground in the new year, thanks to two young girls in Sydney Australia, wanting to make a difference. Sisters Chelsea, 9, and Charlotte, 5, SandysSilakivai, whose maternal grandparents are originally from South Africa, have become ambassadors for the project in Sydney to raise money for the playground. Lee Warren of the Blikkiesdorp 4 Hope project in the area was ecstatic when the story of their projects was carried on our website (TygerBurger, November 16). “We have seen the power of the world wide web, and Facebook working for positivity,” she said. “The children’s grandmother, Beryl Segers, got in touch with me after seeing the article and the next thing they were offering to assist us. “It seems like it is going to be a family affair because her cousin Janine Kelly from RL Architects, who designed the Green Point Park, will be designing the playground for our beautiful children of Blikkiesdorp,” she said. Segers is no stranger to maintaining ties with charities in her home town. She regularly invites entertainers from South Africa to perform at concerts in Australia to raise funds for local SA charities. This time around her grand-daughters

Charlotte, front, and Chelsea SandysSilakivai with their grandmother, Beryl Segers. To date they have raised more than R6 000 for a feeding project in Blikkiesdorp to help over the festive season.

They delivered messages of hope to the women and children at roadblocks, on overhead bridges, stop streets, in streets and at traffic lights on November 25, 28, and 29. Pamphlets were distributed, speeches were delivered and sports games were played. Important advice on how to deal with sexual and domestic violence was also given to the community. Capt Marie Louw, communications officer for Bishop Lavis SAPS added that the message also went out that crimes must be reported to the police. “A lot has been done to empower women

and children but more could be done if people reported transgressions to us,” she said. Another highlight of the awareness campaign was the group of torch-bearing police officers, runners and cyclists who ran and cycled from Simon’s Town to Philippi. While on the road they delivered speeches along the routes, at Standfontein and Muizenberg, while other runners and cyclists also ran and cycled in relay from Vredendal, Beaufort West and George to Cape Town and arrived at Philippi Stadium for the official launch of the 16 Days of Activism. “This was done under the banner of ‘Men for Change’ to spread awareness about the plight of vulnerable women and children. They brought the torch of hope to every awareness event held by the SAPS along the road,” concluded Louw.

This event also culminated in the school’s Annual Awards Ceremony which was a continuation of the theme. The day started with a special assembly with various guest speakers including Lionel Hendricks who is a well known community HIV/Aids facilitator, Tanya Stevenson who represents Special Life Hospice in Elsies River and Ida Mgumale, an HIV/Aids activist who flew in especially from Johannesburg to address the event. Various items of song, poetry and dance were performed by the learners. The special assembly, co-ordinated by educator Paul Mashonga, was concluded with the handing over of cartons filled with nonperishable food items, collected by the learners and their parents during November, to assist Special Life Hospice in caring for people who are in the very final stages of Aids related infections. The hospice was also the beneficiary of all donations collected at the entrance of the Awards Ceremony held at the Adriaanse Hall in Clarke’s Estate. In her address, keynote speaker, a former learner of the school Dr Mawadda CassiemMajal, raised in Clarke’s Estate and still a resident of Elsies River, gave hope to learners and parents that all can rise above circumstances of poverty, not only in academic terms but also in addressing issues of health and specifically HIV/Aids. Emile February, the principal, said that the school intends to become a beacon of light not only in Elsies River, but also the whole of the Cape Flats. “We invite all our parents and the whole community to support the school in all our endeavours in 2012. Uplifting our school uplifts our entire community.”

Nurturing young talent GARY VAN DYK

The Cultural Collective in Leonsdale has begun activities to curb crime. In response to the need for cultural organisations to get together to fight crime, the Dumela Foundation has been formed under the auspices and help of the Performing Arts Network of South Africa (PANSA). Ricardo Speelman, of Dumela, said that they hosted a variety concert and Miss Leonsdale Pageant in the area recently in conjunction

with PANSA and the Rasta Beat organisation. “This initiative actually came from Shante Harker, a young learner from Elswood Secondary in the area. “She is working on starting a modelling programme in the area which will be part of our project to eliminate substance abuse and teenage pregnancy. “This event was the start of bigger things to come for the youth in our community as we strive to give them resources for the positive talents that they have. “Many of them give up on the tal-

ents that they have when they see no future in it, and they can fall into the trap of drug abuse and other criminal activities if those talents are not nurtured. “The time has come for us to join hands to put these talents to good use, and for this purpose we want to form the New Elsies River Arts (NERA) organisation to get these resources in place,” he said. For further Information regarding PANSA and this cultural initiative Ricardo Speelman can be contacted on 074 071 7701 or send an emai to: peelmanricardo327@gmail.com.

The winners of the pageant, from left, First Princess, Brenda Daniels; Donay Joubert, Miss Leonsdale; Edwina Du Plooy, Second Princess; with Tatum Williams, and Rowena Ling, who were crowned favourites.

Cracker of an Xmas While things always go better with CocaCola, this year it will be bringing some Christmas cheer to children at a community centre in Elsies River. This year the bottlers of the popular refreshment, the Peninsula Beverage Company (Pty) Ltd and the V&A Waterfront have joined forces to bring Christmas cheer to children in less fortunate areas and are calling on the public to support their initiative. In a creative approach to a Christmas toy drive, a large branded Christmas Cracker, measuring 1.5 by 6 metres, will be positioned at the Wheel of Excellence in the Waterfront until Friday 9 December. Visitors are encouraged to bring along toys which they can donated by placing them through a shoe box-sized slot in the cracker. All the toys collected during this time will be donated to the Tehillah Community Centre in Elsies River. The centre renders a holistic service to people facing socio-economic challenged situations such as poverty, unemployment, TB and HIV/Aids. It also provides TB and HIV/ Aids preventative programmes and an open door to victims of abuse, especially women and children. They also run various youth development outreach programmes in the community. There are currently 101 children housed at Tehillah who would benefit greatly from some Christmas cheer. Chantelle Kidd, marketing executive at the V&A Waterfront said that they were honoured to support such an initiative. “The giant cracker fittingly joins the Crate Man at the Waterfront this year and we are privileged and honoured to support an initiative that will benefit the community in which we operate directly and gladly give the cracker pride of place at the heart of the V&A Waterfront’s most highly visible and visited area,” she said. “We look forward to giving each child at Tehillah Community Centre their own personalised gift this year at a Christmas party that will be sponsored by PenBev,” says Denise Green, corporate social responsibility manager for the company. For more information about Tehillah Community Centre visit http://www.tehillah.za.org. For PenBev information see www.penbev.co.za.

Chess tournament The Bishop Lavis Library will be hosting a chess tourney during the December school holidays. It will be taking place on 13 and 14 December, starting at 09:00 each day. Entry fee is R15, and registrations will take place from tomorrow until Monday 12 December. Further information from Mark Sinclair on 021 934 6550 and Daniel Arendse on 021 934 6550.

The ‘boards’ beckon Bonteheuwel kids are getting the acting bug thanks to a drama studio in the area. Children from the drama studio of the Helen O’Grady Drama Academy in the area recently performed spectacular plays in their annual productions at the Theatre in the District in Cape Town. The lower primary class of children, aged five to eight, started with the play The Emperor and the Nightingale. With magical Chinese costumes and carefully choreographed movements, these young children really showed how they were able to bring the life and colour of this story to the stage. The children sang their Budding songs and danced their hearts out telling how the nightingale’s song was best sung in the forest. Following this the upper primary class performed in the classic story of The Pied Piper of Hamelin, and they demonstrated the skills they have developed over the year in performance arts and their natural confidence on stage. The Youth Theatre is made up of students from high schools and they always end the evening with a challenging piece. This year the students put on a play which required them to act in the Agatha Christie genre of murder

TygerBurger Elsiesrivier Bladsy 15 The Western Cape K9 unit is appealing to the public to donate any unwanted yet suitable dogs for the application of police duties. Dogs must be between the ages of six months and two years, not a cross breed, able to walk on a leash and not show signs of being

actors from Bonteheuwel in a scene from The Pied Piper of Hamelin. mystery called Murder at Mornington Manor. The audience was left to figure out for themselves who the murderer was in the end. Much of the acting was based on the British class system and the youth theatre actors really brought this to the fore, with precise character acting and authentic accents. The evening ended with the principal of the academy, Duncan Rice, presenting the students with their certificates and trophies. The academy has its own version of the Oscars where the children make short speeches after their

awards. Rice said that this was a wonderful year for the academy. “The Cape Town Academy has now grown to be one of the world’s largest community-based drama schools in the world and I am so pleased that so many children are learning to be confident speakers and creative performers. “It is our aim to nurture all our children. No one is just a tree in our productions, everyone has a main part to play, that is why we say everyone is a star in our school.” Phone 021 674 74478, or visit www.dramaafrica.com.

Topnotch waterskiing for lake The country’s top tournament waterskiers will be descending on the picturesque Bon Esperance lake just south of Malmesbury for four days of skiing. The competition includes a night slalom competition tomorrow night, and the West Coast Championship which culminates on Sunday. The large field of nearly 40 skiers representing all age groups will participate in all three tournament disciplines – namely slalom skiing around buoys, thrilling ramp jumping and trick skiing. Several Western Province waterskiers have fared well at international tournaments this year, with Gabriella Viljoen, 18, hoping to improve on her astonishing half buoy on 11,25 metres in slalom to break yet another South African record. Senior skier Jan Johnson

took her third gold medal at the European/African (EA) Championship for slalom this year, and is currently ranked number two in the world in her age group. Fifteen-year old Eamon van der Merwe, from Parklands College, was the youngest skier to qualify for the EA u-21 Championship taking place in Kakamas, South Africa next year, and he had a podium result for slalom at the EA u-17 Champs in Europe this year. Other top skiers worth watching include Durbanville High School’s Louis Schutte and dramatic ramp jumper Simon Fairbank from Milnerton amongst a sprinkling of Namibian skiers. Skiing gets under way at 08:00 each day from Friday, with the night skiing starting tomorrow at 20:00. Entrance is free. Bon Esperance is situated on the N7, just 15 kilometres south of Malmesbury.
