) Project shows teens real prison life

Books not prison bars GARY VAN DYK

As the new year gets under way, a dedicated community worker wants youth in the area to concentrate on their books and not prison bars. Dhakir Christians, of Former Tik Addicts Reach Out (FTARO), said the organisation was starting a project in several areas to show youth the reality of what life is like behind prison bars. “Books not Bars is a project that

wants to show the youth that prison life is no joke,” he explained. “It will also give them an insight into how the criminal justice system works as we take them on a tour of the prison system. “The aim of these tours is to educate our children about prison life and they will find out what happens to a young person in prison when they get in trouble with the law. “We want to make it clear to our youth that there are serious consequences for criminal behaviour.” Christians also explained that

troubled teens and young adults would be taken on the tour to discourage them from getting in trouble, but most importantly eradicate the trend of seeing gangsters and criminals as role models. “Our youth join gangs from the early age of 12, the average age is about 17 to 18 years,” he says. “Not many people realise that around half of youth gang members are 18 or older. These older members are much more likely to be involved in serious and violent crimes while they not only make

use of the younger ones to succeed with their activities, but also to escape a criminal sentence by putting the blame on the younger members. “Teens join gangs for a variety of reasons, some want excitement; others are looking for prestige, protection, a chance to make money, or a sense of belonging. “Few teens are forced to join gangs, in most cases, teens can refuse to join without fear of retaliation. In Bellville South the area is well-known for very young gangs, but these youngsters need to open

their eyes to the truth that is prison life. “It’s a dead-end street to nowhere, you will end up dead, or eventually get back to the community with no family, friends or skills to become a positive part of society.” Parents, or other interested parties that want youth from 16 to 20 to take part in the project can contact Christians on 074 998 4997, or Mercia Kleinsmith on 071 418 3032. The first tour is scheduled for later this month. Watch the press for more details.

Cool Runnings: need for speed ANDRÉ BAKKES

“Remember not to brake,” says a friend before he accelerates innocently down the Cool Runnings Toboggan course in Durbanville. As per instruction, this inexperienced tobogganist leans into the first turn with surprising ease. “This isn’t so difficult,” laughs the rookie as he foolishly tempts fate. He shoots through the second turn at 30km/h, but he is convinced that he is about to break the sound barrier. When he reaches 40km/h it almost feels like he’s travelling back in time it’s so quick. He might have applied the brakes a couple of times, but he nonetheless feels like he just set a land speed record. His friend, who started 10 seconds before him, just shook his head while he waited patiently at the bottom for the tardy tobogganist. Almost anyone can toboggan at their own pace, but the real rush comes from pushing the envelope. This sport usually requires a snowy slope and a sleigh, but in snowless South Africa a stainless steel course is sufficient. Cool Runnings is, in fact, the only toboggan course in Africa. Some of the staff have been working there since it opened in 2007, so if anyone knows how to navigate through the bobsled-like course, it’s them. TygerBurger discovered that most of the 20-odd staff members race against the clock when the customers leave at the end of the day.

They are a colourful bunch of individuals who constantly try to better their personal best times. Richard Mupoperi has been there for four years and says he has gone down the track “a million times”. “I still enjoy it! Each time it feels like something new,” he states. Richard’s personal best is one minute five seconds, which is two seconds slower than rival Arnold Hatinawedu’s record. “Arnold and Allen are my main competition. Those guys go really fast!” Kyle Fortuin agrees with Richard: “Yes. The best is definitely Arnold. He has the stomach!” Apparently weight is a tobogganist’s friend. Arnold laughs shyly when he hears the others say that he’s the quickest. “Momentum is important, but one should also lean forward and resist the urge to brake,” continues Arnold. Richard, Kyle, Arnold have all had bruising experiences in their pursuit of perfection, so it was not surprising when Tawanda Bundu and Michael Pietersen also recounted their own close encounters. Michael is apparently the “King of Crashes”. He explains with analytical certainty, “It obviously depends on how you land, but you must remember that you’re sliding, so you must continue your slide when you fall off. “Keep your arms and legs close to your body!” Owner Frank Unger says they get 400 000 visitors and probably see 1,5 million rides annually. “Now that there is 300 percent

Stay safe during summer ‘diarrhoea season’

Uitgewer:

CHILTON MELLEM

Summer is known for sunny days and fun at the beach, but according to the Western Cape health department, diarrhoea is very prevalent for at this time. According to Dr Ivan Bromfield, executive director at the department of health, children under the age of five are particularly vulnerable to diarrhoea. Dehydration can happen very quickly and carry serious consequences including death in some cases. It is noted that this disease flourishes in areas of poor sanitation as well as contaminated water and food. Even though contaminated

food and water are the most common ways of getting diarrhoea, there are more. Touching contaminated areas such as tables, toys or even the hand of someone who is infected can cause the spread of the disease. “November to May is usually known as the diarrhoea season. The season is the result of warmer weather conditions which are favourable for the overbreeding of viruses, bacteria, toxins and other pathological agents that affect the gut. “Much diarrhoea is the result of oral-faecal contamination,” said Bromfield. A few signs to look out for if you suspect your child has diar-

rhoea are vomiting, a runny tummy, a fever or vomiting which leads to dehydration or a loss of appetite. In infants, an additional sign to look out for is if your child refuses to breastfeed. In cases such as this, the SaltSugar Solution (SSS) is recommended: make a mixture of one litre of clean water, eight teaspoons of sugar and half a teaspoon of salt. This should be given to the child regularly but if the symptoms persist, the child should be taken to the nearest clinic immediately. If a child suffering from severe symptoms is treated early enough and given proper care,

they can recover within a few days. The Western Cape department of health recommends that parents adhere to the following advice to avoid contracting the disease: . Keeping your hands clean is one of the most important steps in stopping the spread or contracting the disease. When washing your hands, use soap and clean water and wash for at least 20 seconds. . Make sure you kill harmful bacteria by cooking food to the proper internal temperature. . Use refrigerated leftovers as soon as possible, an ideal period is between two to three days.

‘Renting space’ from locals to stop GARY VAN DYK

Days are numbered for the practice of “renting” space for business by foreign nationals in local communities. In Elsies River, a local councillor Chris Jordaan, has vowed to take action on what has become a major

problem in many areas. He explained that in many areas across the Western Cape many foreigners had come into communities to start the practice of “renting” space from residents to start a shop. “We understand the economic reasons for this happening, but people must realise that in most cases it is illegal,” he said.

“These foreigners come into areas and pay absurd amounts of money to open these shops, but I want to warn people that if they are staying in a council house there can be serious repercussions for them, because this is illegal. “I am presently busy with a survey to investigate the problem, and if there are irregularities people

must be prepared to face the consequences. “Other problems that have been coming up since this practice started is that the “shop” is a front for selling drugs, which just adds to an existing problem in many of our areas. I want to warn these people that we are not going to allow it to happen unchecked any more, and I

want people who have these problems in their areas to contact me so that it can be investigated. “Too many of these shops are also operating without the proper licences, and it is affecting legitimate traders,” he said. Jordaan can be contacted on 021 931 0644 or email Chris.Jordaan@capetown.gov.za.

Bellville South proud of her six distinctions CERRIN HENDRICKS

Bellville South High School's pass rate has gone up from 54 percent to 79 percent, thanks to the combined effort of the pupils, staff, and parents. Pictured here are principal Vincent Fester with Tamzyn Hercules, who achieved six distinctions. Photo: Cerrin Hendricks

For the first time in over 35 years, Bellville South High School (BSHS) has produced a student with six distinctions. “I am very lucky to have been in a school that motivates their learners so much,” said pupil, Tamzyn Hercules. The school has been implementing new ways of encouraging their pupils, and helping them better themselves through their education. “Our pass rate has gone from 54 percent to 79 percent in the space of one year,” said Vincent Fester, principal of BSHS, adding that “our staff really went the extra mile, and gave weekend and holiday classes without asking for any extra pay”. The school’s goal for 2012 is to get closer to the 100 percent pass

rate which many schools covet, and with so many staff geared towards putting in the extra hours, and with help from the parents in the community, that goal can be achieved. “It is of utmost importance that parents get involved in their children’s education, because learning is a full-time thing. “We want all of our pupils to go further with their education and better themselves as people,” said Fester. Tamzyn has applied to the University of the Western Cape, and wishes to pursue a career as a pharmacist. “I know that the work ethic that Tamzyn has picked up here at BSHS will help her to cope with the pressures of tertiary education, and I hope that soon all of our students will be able to cope at that level,” said Fester.

NSRI hands full in busy festive season LEON STEENKAMP

Members of the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) at Melkbosstrand had a busy festive season. Local station commander Rhine Barnes said they were involved in a number of near drownings in December as well as a drowning at Silverstroom beach last week. On 16 December a 12-year-old girl from Fisantekraal was saved from drowning. She was taken to hospital. On Christmas day they provided

medical assistance to a 28-year-old man from Cape Town who also almost drowned. He was taken to hospital. Boxing Day saw the local rescuers involved in many first aid type injuries and medical calls. The NSRI members aided a 12year-old child and an 80-year-old woman who both suffered from heat exhaustion and dehydration. A young woman (19) was treated after she suffered an epileptic seizure on Melkbosstrand beach. Barnes’s team also helped local firefighters in treating a woman who suffered a severe asthma attack on the

beach. Although they managed to stabilise her breathing on site, the 32year-old woman from Atlantis died at New Somerset Hospital the next day. They were also on hand to help in the near drowning of a five-year-old girl at Silverstroom strand. “We assisted the lifesavers and medical emergency personnel in giving her treatment. She was taken to hospital in a stable but serious condition,” Barnes said. On 29 December a 19-year-old man was rescued after almost drowning at Melkbosstrand beach.

The holiday almost took a tragic turn for Jason James from Centurion when he became distressed in the water at 14:15. A jet skier noticed that James was in trouble and helped him to get ashore. He was then transported by a Metro Emergency Medical Services ambulance to New Somerset Hospital for further medical treatment. On 1 January another resident from Fisantekraal was saved from drowning at Melkbosstrand. The 16year-old was stabilised and taken to hospital by ambulance. A young man from Atlantis

drowned at Silverstroom strand last Wednesday after he was caught in a rip current. When we arrived the local lifeguards were already searching for the man. We aided in the search until the police divers arrived and took over,” Barnes said. The man was presumed drowned and his body has not yet been found. On Friday they assisted a 19-yearold man from Atlantis after he had an epileptic seizure in the water at Melkbosstrand. Barnes said it was a busy but successful season. “We didn’t have a drowning in Melkbosstrand.”

The NSRI station commander at Melkbosstrand took this picture of the crowded local beach on New Year’s Day.

Canal Walk jewellery store heist ANDRÉ BAKKES

This year started badly for Shimansky Jewellery in Canal Walk when five armed suspects pulled off an audacious robbery and fled with several hundred thousand of rand of jewellery. According to Milnerton police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Daphne Dell, the men robbed the store at 12:30 on 1 January.

Canal Walk CEO, Gavin Wood, elaborates: “Two of the suspects distracted the security guard that was positioned in the area close to the store and three entered the Shimansky store. The suspects who entered the store were armed and smashed one of the display cabinets, getting away with an undisclosed amount of jewellery. No shots were fired and no one was injured.” Says Dell: “The suspects fled on

foot and were noticed leaving Canal Walk in a white Honda. This vehicle was also reported stolen the previous week.” Apparently a security guard close to the jewellery store noticed when the suspects smashed the cabinet and alerted the security personnel via the shopping complex’s control room. The police and centre security were on the scene within minutes and are currently investigating the

She adds that in their rush to get away, the robbers drove through the security boom at the parking lot entrance. This is not the first time that Canal Walk was targeted, as Wood ex-

plains: “We are aware of similar incidents that have taken place at the centre since its opening in 2000, however, in the recent past there have been no incidents of this nature other than the Shimansky incident. The 10km course starts in Cape Town on Monday 23 January and the 21,1km on Monday 6 February. For more information contact OptiFit on 021 659 5631.

Still time for charities to apply Charity organisations still have until this Friday (13 January) to send in their motivations to become a beneficiary of this year’s Want ons Kan/ ’Cause we Can! concert. Almost R1,5 million rand has been raised for charity over the last nine years with the concert taking place for the 10th time this year. TygerBurger is the media sponsor of this popular event where some of the country’s top musicians and vocalists perform free. Some top acts have already confirmed their participation at the 2012 event, taking place on Sunday 29 July at the Bellville Civic Centre. They include Heinz Winkler, Emo Adams and Take Note, Brandon October, Adam, Alan Committie, Zanne Stapelberg and Broers. Charities that have benefited over the years include Meals on Wheels in Kraaifontein, Filia School, Badisa, Tehillah, Huis Jabes, Helping Angels and Rock a Bye Baby House. To apply, send a letter of motivation containing background on the organisation, what you’re planning to do with the money and how you’re planning to sell tickets, to Hennie van Greunen at henniewtf@mweb.co.za.

The Rockets is ou bekendes op menige radiostasie.

The Rockets sal by die Taalmonument optree.

Canal Walk goes mobile Local shopping centre Canal Walk has launched the first-ever South African mall mobile application. The Canal Walk application for iPhone, Blackberry and Android is available for free at www.mallinfo.mobi/cw. The application is jam-packed with functions to enhance the Canal Walk shopping experience. It features a store directory, store location service, movie show times and trailers, events and competitions. “It puts even more control in the palm of shoppers’ hands – it’s like having a personal customer services assistant,” says Canal Walk CEO, Gavin Wood. In addition to providing an instant communication platform for customers to access retail and promotional information, it also offers some nifty functions to make shopping, and life in general, run smoother. The Canal Walk Gift Ideas category even presents customers with suggestions of the hottest gifts of the moment, and directs shoppers to where they can be acquired at the shopping mall.

Foodies favour market The City Bowl Market on Hope is becoming the place where Cape foodies meet. The organisers have spent months scouring the Cape for the most exciting stallholders and products – think bagels, Indian, sushi and croissants, but also fresh produce, bacon-and-egg rolls, ciabatta, cheese and everything in between. It caters for the whole family with a garden and jungle gym for the kids, draft beer for the dads and lots of irresistible goodies. The City Bowl Market trades every Saturday between 9:00 and 14:00. It is situated at 14 Hope Street, Gardens. For more information visit www.citybowlmarket.co.za.

Race brings in funds for Shiloh Local charity organisation Shiloh Synergy was the beneficiary of Growthpoint Properties’ Sundowner 10km walk/run that took place along one of South Africa’s most beautiful shorelines, starting and finishing at the V&A Waterfront recently. A total of 2 634 participants finished the race and a cheque of R2 500 was handed over to Shiloh. Shiloh Synergy is a group of projects based on Biblical principles and committed towards the genuine needs of people, animals and the environment. Shiloh’s main concern is the upliftment and providing assistance to children and people who are in need.

The first male home, Sityhilo Diko, finished in a time of 30:26.

Bellville kry onverwags slae SAREL BURGER

BLUE DOWNS/ HINDLE ROAD

’n groot drag slae toegedien.

An Epic battle for survivor Local Bellville resident, Ernst Viljoen, is currently undergoing strict training and preparation to ride the 2012 Absa Cape Epic in celebration of his recent successful recovery from prostate cancer. This will be his fourth entry in the annual race in the Western Cape and he will devote his participation to those suffering from cancer and to raise awareness and funding for Cansa. As a Team Absa rider, Absa will generously donate R1 300 to the organisation for every stage of the race that Viljoen completes – a potential total of R9 100 for his efforts. “Thankfully, the disease was diagnosed at an early stage and I was able to beat the cancer,” says Viljoen. “I am extremely thankful that I can get back on my bike and ride again, and enjoy the sport which I have been doing for most of my life. It is not something I take for granted.” Viljoen has been active in the sport of cycling for the past 44 years and made a serious conversion to mountain biking in 2006, when Absa – his then employer – became the title sponsor of the Absa Cape Epic. He has since retired from his banking career of 28 years and is currently a lecturer in financial management at a private college in Cape Town. Viljoen has also completed the Bike TransAlp in 2007 and has 20 Cape Argus Pick n Pay Cycle Tour rides to his name so far. Diagnosed with prostate cancer in December 2010, Viljoen opted for a brachytherapy – the implanting of radioactive seeds into the prostate – instead of surgically removing the gland. The procedure was scheduled for April 2011 allowing him to attend his son’s wedding

Ernst Viljoen will be paired with Elana Meyer during the Absa Cape Epic. and complete the 2011 Absa Cape Epic in March 2011. Viljoen is now fully recovered from the disease and looking ahead to the 2012 instalment of the world’s toughest mountain bike stage

SUP pros show top form A record number of entries marked the fourth Coreban Summer Series for Stand Up Paddlers (SUP), held at Bloubergstrand recently. The three days of competition in the surf slalom, wave riding and long distance racing resulted in non-stop action. This year’s event saw the largest field of SUP entrants in Africa with over 100 entrants ranging from seven-year-old Cameron Tripney in the children’s division to novice men and women divisions, the highly contested junior division, legends (over 45) and open men and women divisions. The contest was held in three days of perfect weather starting with the slalom event. A rise in swell on the second day saw organisers make the call for wave riding. The third and final day was quite easily the most action-packed SUP day Africa has ever seen. With the wind subsiding paddlers had to prepare for the 7,5km distance racing around the islands at Big Bay. The start of the race saw the set of the day come through causing many athletes to immediately be eliminated. An error in judgement saw Dylan Frick, Greg Bertish and Colin Heckroodt, who where all three in line for overall first place position leading the pack, take the wrong course opening up the field and allowing Peter Peterson and others to sneak through into top position. Showing true colours in the ladies’ division was Brigette van Aswegen setting a new standard in long distance racing. With long distance out of the way, it

race. This year Viljoen will be paired with Team Absa partner and Olympic silver medallist, Elana Meyer, and their training is already well under way.

Viljoen will also serve as manager for Team Absa. The team includes rugby legend Joel Stransky and model Vanessa Haywood. The Absa Cape Epic will take place from 25 March to 1 April 2012.
