Die verlate Langebergrif-huis wat rondlopers tot onlangs gebruik het as ’n woning en toevlugsoord, is onlangs afgebreek. Dié verwikkelinge word deur die raadslid en Koeberg-subraadvoorsitter, Gerhard Fourie, toegeskryf aan die samewerking tussen die subraad en die gemeenskap. “As hier nie ’n gemeenskapsforum was nie, het Piet Pompies gekla, Van der Merwe gekla en het almal individueel gekla. Maar nou praat die gemeenskap met een stem,” verduidelik Fourie as hy

verwys na die Langebergrif-gemeenskapsforum (LRG). In die berig “Vagrants sitting pretty” in TygerBurger 20 Julie, is verslag gedoen oor die bure se klagtes van rondlopers wat in die bouvallige huis oornag en by die bure inbreek. Volgens Fourie is die eiendom, wat eens ’n kwekery was, nou in ’n trust. “In 2008 is daar ’n ontwikkeling beplan om dorpshuise te bou, maar besware het die proses vertraag.” Besware is blykbaar gemaak teen die bou van dubbelverdiepingdorpshuise wat die uitsig sal belemmer.

Gedurende hierdie lang proses het rondlopers die huis vir hulself toegeëien en voor die bure hul oë kon uitvee, het die huis gewemel van swerwers. Misdaad het ook drasties in die omgewing toegeneem. Daar is toe op ’n vergadering tussen die subraad en die gemeenskap besluit dat die huis afgebreek moet word, en een van die gemeenskapslede het dit toe in November teen geen koste gedoen. Die planne vir die eiendom is ook in die proses om afgehandel te word. “Ons het nou deur al die besware gewerk en ons glo dit sal ’n pragtige

ontwikkeling wees.” Fourie sê daar sal waarskynlik dorpshuise met twee tot drie verdiepings teen Okavangoweg en ’n paar residensiële huise verder van die pad gebou word. Die uitsig van die bure sal blykbaar nie benadeel word nie. Die voorsitter van LRG, Juanita Adam, sê die afbreek van die huis en dié nuwe verwikkelinge is ongetwyfeld wonderlike nuus vir die gemeenskap. “Gerhard het by ons laaste vergadering vir ons verduidelik dat die moontlike ontwikkeling baie netjies sal wees as dit eers klaar gebou is. Dit sal ook die hele gebied bevei-

lig, aangesien dit afgekamp sal wees,” verduidelik sy. Fourie sê dat hul nou in die proses is om gemeenskapwykskomitees met ’n maksimum ledetal van 10 verteenwoordigers te stig. Hierdie lede sal kom van organisasies soos die belastingsbetalersvereniging en die polisie. “Dit beteken dat die raadslid maandelikse of tweemaandelikse kontak met die hele wyk sal hê. As die gemeenskap saamstaan en saam met hul raadslid werk, dan sal die raadslid oplossings vind om dinge te laat gebeur. Ons moet elke geleentheid aangryp om te wys dat ’n DA-beheerde provinsie goeie diens kan lewer.”

Gewapendes beroof winkel ANDRÉ BAKKES

Twee gewapende verdagtes het verlede Maandag met ’n onbekende hoeveelheid geld ontsnap nadat hulle Diamond’s Discount Liquors in Kraaifontein beroof het. Die plaaslike polisie se woordvoerder, kaptein Gerhard Niemand, bevestig dat niemand in die voorval beseer is nie. “Die verdagtes het opgedaag net toe die geldwa daar gestop het,” brei Niemand uit. Daarna het die verdagtes blykbaar vir die mense gesê dat hul “almal” sal doodskiet as die geld nie aan hulle oorhandig word nie. “’ n Klomp geld is aan hulle oorhandig voordat hulle weggehardloop het,” verduidelik hy. Woordvoerder Niemand wil egter nie aandui hoeveel mense in die winkel was tydens die voorval nie en ook nie hoeveel geld gesteel is nie. Hy sê dat die polisie die gemeen-

skap op die hoogte van die verwikkelinge sal hou. “Ons doen alles in ons vermoë om die skuldiges te vang, want ons het tot dusver hard gewerk om besigheidsrooftogte min te hou,” sê hy. “Als word ondersoek, insluitend of dit ’n binnemisdaad was, of daar ander betrokke was en of die verdagtes later in ’n voertuig gespring het. Ons wil hierdie ouens agter tralies sit.” Niemand vra nietemin dat enigiemand wat inligting het oor die voorval, na vore moet tree. “Ons het die gemeenskap se hulp nodig. Daar is selfs ’n beloning beskikbaar as die inligting kan lei tot ’n arrestasie of as die geld teruggevind word,” sê hy. Die meeste van die getraumatiseerde werkers wat tydens die aanval op die perseel was, het al berading by die polisie ontvang. Niemand sluit af: “Sake-eienaars en bestuurders moet voorbereid wees op enige gebeurlikheid en presies weet wat om in so ’n situasiete doen.”

’n Kortsluiting het verlede Woensdag in Wallacedene veroorsaak dat agt houthuisies en vyf steenhuise afgebrand het. Niemand is beseer nie, maar talle gesinne het al hul besittings verloor in die vlamme wat net ná 09:00 die huise verteer het. Theo Layne, die woordvoerder van Kaapstad se brand- en-reddingsdienste, het bevestig dat drie brandweerwaens, ’n reddingsdienstevoertuig en ’n apar-

te watertenk na die toneel ontbied was. “Dit het alles begin met ’n vonk in ’n elektriese kabel,” verduidelik Layne. Enkele minute later het die vuur na ander omliggende huise versprei. Die plaaslike raadslid, Brenda Hansen, het binne 15 minute in Wallacedene opgedaag, maar die verterende vlamme het die huise klaar vernietig. “Mense wat niks het nie, het tog alles verloor,” sê Hansen.

Dit het haar opgeval hoe almal vir almal gehelp het om alles moontlik te red, maar die meeste het moes toegekyk hoe hul lewe voor hul oë verwoes word. “Mense was geskok, maar dit is nie nuut vir hulle nie. Daar is maar baie brande in sulke omgewings.” Hansen het die brandweer lof toegeswaai vir hul flukse pogings om die vlamme te blus. Sy sluit af om te sê dat sy baie onwettige elektriese lasplekke in die woonbuurt gesien het.

Kraaifontein Police confiscated an unlicensed Norinco 7.62mm firearm from a man in his twenties after they saw him walking “suspiciously” next to the N1 last week Wednesday. He was arrested for being in possession of an unlicensed firearm. Accord ing to local police spokesperson, Captain Gerhard Niemand, they be lieve the man could be one of the robbers who are “working on the N1”. He explains: “There are people who rob others on the N1 if they stop their vehicles.” He says they have received many complaints of robberies on the national road. Last round: The City of Cape Town’s Liquor Enforcement Unit and the Vice Squad joined forces with Kraaifontein Police when they inspected various shebeens in the area and confiscated thousands of rands worth of liquor from illegal operators. Operations such as this will be conducted on a regular basis to address complaints received from members of the public of antisocial behaviour linked to shebeens and nightclubs. Standing with the team who took part in the operation are Senior Inspector Charlene Vassen and Captain Jerome Syster.

Voertuigdiefstal ‘nie só erg’ ANDRÉ BAKKES

Die Kraaifontein-polisie weier om te bevestig of ’n groot hoeveelheid voertuie in November by die Brighton-winkelsentrum gesteel is. In die jongste voorval is Jacques Rossouw se wit Isuzu-bakkie by die sentrum op die hoek van Brighton- en Yorkstrate gesteel. Volgens hom was die voertuig verlede

van die Kraaifontein-polisie, kaptein Gerhard Niemand, kan dit nie bevestig nie. Rossouw verwys na hierdie onaanvaarbare aantal voorvalle wanneer hy beklemtoon dat dit “eintlik lagwekkend” is. “Iets moet aan die sekuriteit gedoen word,” sê ’n omgekrapte Rossouw. Daar is tans geen wagte by die sentrum nie. Een van die bestuurders van ’n onderneming by die Brighton-sentrum het met TygerBurger gepraat op voorwaarde dat hy anoniem bly. Hy reken dat dit glad nie so ’n groot probleem is as wat Rossouw voorgee nie en dat hy selfs weet van mense wat nie eens hul voertuie sluit as hulle dit daar parkeer nie. “Statistiek is net statistiek. Daar is plekke waar CCTV-kameras geïnstalleer is en nog steeds is daar misdaad. Ons kan nie weghardloop daarvan nie,” meen hy. Volgens hom is daar baie mense wat heeldag in die parkeerarea staan en werk soek. “Hulle is as’t ware ons sekuriteit,” voeg hy by. “Die polisie maak ook gereeld ’n draai hier.” Niemand stem saam met die anonieme bestuurder wanneer hy sê: “Dis maar beter om statistiek te vermy. Voertuigdiefstalle is nietemin ’n groot bekommernis, maar die publiek kan gerus wees dat ons alle moontlikhede ondersoek.” Op die vraag of daar miskien ’n sindikaat in die area is, het hy weer eens beklemtoon dat hulle nog besig is met ondersoeke, maar hy voeg by dat die meeste voertuigdiewe slegs kansvatters is. “Dis natuurlik weer daardie tyd van die jaar wanneer diefstalle toeneem, so wees altyd versigtig.”

This time around her grand-daughters were way ahead of her when they saw the conditions for children in Blikkiesdorp. “It is no accident that Chelsea has already become quite aware of her social responsibility. When she was four she became the youngest child in Australia to receive a bravery award for coming to her mother’s rescue when she found her unconscious on the floor at home. “She also became the Young Citizen of the Year and gets invited to Australia Day dinners by our local council and other events. “Along with her younger sister Charlotte they are ambassadors to raise funds for this project, and making people aware of how they can help with projects like this. “They are already actively involved in raising funds for a mother and baby clinic in Bali. “When they saw the playground photos on the website, they were so moved and said we must help the children to have a beautiful playground ... Plans are under way for children in Blikkiesdorp in Delft to get a new playground in the new year, thanks to two young girls in Sydney Australia, wanting to make a difference. Sisters Chelsea, 9, and Charlotte, 5, SandysSilakivai, whose maternal grandparents are originally from South Africa, have become ambassadors for the project in Sydney to raise money for the playground. Lee Warren of the Blikkiesdorp 4 Hope project in the area was ecstatic when the story of their projects was carried on our website (TygerBurger, November 16). “We have seen the power of the world wide web, and Facebook working for positivity,” she said. “The children’s grandmother, Beryl Segers, got in touch with me after seeing the article and the next thing they were offering to assist. “It seems like it is going to be a family affair because her cousin Janine Kelly from RL Architects, who designed the Green Point Park, will be designing the playground for our beautiful children of Blikkiesdorp,” she said. Hopelik het jy in hierdie tyd van goeie nuus self ook genoeg goeie nuus, en ook sommer ’n bonus van hoor en sien van baie genade daarby, om self regtig bly en dankbaar te wees teenoor God. Ek en jy het die wonderlike geleentheid om ander mense te oortuig dat die goeie nuus regtig goed is! Dit is een ding om maar net vir iemand anders ’n geskenk te gee, maar laat ons eerder vir mekaar geskenke wees! As jy die goeie nuus wil uitdeel, moet jy deel van die goeie nuus wees! Jy moet blydskap gee omdat jy self bly is. Jy moet iets van Jesus gee, omdat Jesus Homself vir jou gegee het! Roy L. Smith het gesê: “Hulle wat Kersfees nie in die hart het nie, soek dit tevergeefs toegedraai in geskenkpapier onder ’n Kersboom”. Laat ons dus hierdie Kersfees ’n Christusfees maak. Laat ons Hom wat in ons harte blydskap gee, ook gee as Geskenk aan andere. Maak hierdie Kersfees ’n geseënde Kersfees, omdat jy vir iemand anders ’n stukkie van Jesus se seën uitdeel! Maak die goeie nuus regtig goed, so goed as wat die goeie boodskap is wat ons vandag steeds laat feesvier oor God se liefde vir ons! . Die woord “evangelie” beteken: goeie aankondiging, goeie nuus, goeie tyding. Geen wonder nie ons lees van die vier Evangelies in die Nuwe Testament wat elkeen die goeie nuus van Jesus op ’n besondere manier kom vertel. Ek wonder wat ons vandag sou doen as hierdie goeie nuus op dieselfde manier, en net so onverwags aan ons gegee is. Stel jou voor: engele uit die hemel bring die boodskap oor Jesus Christus , wat die wêreld kom red en verander vir altyd. Dink net hoe sou die televisie en ander media se verslaggewers toegesak het op die plek waar dit plaasvind. Kan jy jou voorstel hoe hierdie nuus opslae sou maak in ’n wêreld wat regtig goeie nuus nodig het! Maar maak dit regtig nog opslae? Beteken die koms van Jesus Christus regtig nog iets vir mense? Is dit regtig sulke goeie nuus? Glo en verstaan mense dit (nog), of is dit net ’n mooi verhaaltjie wat iewers in die stowwerige bladsye van die Bybel opgeteken is? Wallacedene and Welmoed cemeteries open for burials The new Wallacedene Cemetery and Welmoed Extension Cemetery are now fully operational, according to City of Cape Town’s City Parks Department. Burials already began at the beginning of last month, which offers

relief to some communities who prefer Saturday burials and find that other cemeteries are fully booked. Currently a maximum of five burials per day are available at Wallacedene Cemetery and 10 burials per day at Welmoed Cemetery, but

there is a chance that these limits might be increased in the new year. The cemeteries offer a choice between private Full Monumental Graves and Berm graves. Berm grave sections are a cheaper option and limit the family to headstones only

Vier kinders, van wie die jongste net agt jaar oud is, is onlangs in die Kraaifontein-omgewing verkrag of seksueel aangerand. Die polisie sal nou as ’n voorsorgmaatreël kinders wat ná middernag buite rondloop, oplaai en dan die ouers in kennis stel. In een van die skokkendste gevalle, verduidelik kapt. Gerhard Niemand, Kraaifontein-polisiewoordvoerder, was ’n 13-jarige blykbaar deur haar stiefpa aangerand terwyl haar eie ma haar vasgehou het. “Ons moet hierdie wanpersepsie

Zoo warns of ‘aw cute’ reaction from new babies ANDRÉ BAKKES

Dangerously high levels of cuteness are emitting from one of the cages in Tygerberg Zoopark. Those who get close to the three newly-born baby raccoons could suffer from involuntary “aaawwwws” and wholly silly expressions. TygerBurger went to the zoo outside Kraaifontein last week to get to the bottom of this unfounded raccoon claim. It turned out to be true. When the people entered the raccoons’ cage, the older siblings and the mother used their cuteness to dreadful effect. Big inquisitive eyes followed our every movement and the mother hung upside down in the cage while doing her best impression of a carnivore ready to pounce if something should happen to her young. And right in the corner of a wooden box, the three kits were huddling together in a big ball of fur.

“Aaaaaaawwww” exclaimed this journalist with a silly expression. The best thing to do in such a scenario is to get really technical. These intelligent mammals are from the Procyon (before dog, or dog-like) genus and one of the translations for its name is “the one who rubs, scrubs and scratches with its hands”. One of the kits rubbed, scrubbed and scratched with its hands. “Aaaaaawwwww!” The owner of the zoo, Lorraine Spence, agreed, “Aren’t they just the most adorable things you’ve ever seen?” An absent-minded question of whether they bite was rebutted by Spence when she mused: “Anything with teeth bites.” After a few quick, disconcerting camera flashes the kits could once again huddle up in their big furry ball. The intruders were gone – deactivate cuteness. The raccoons are only fooling themselves.

Pet detective sniffs out online solution During October, Wehahn Geldenhuys experienced the pain of losing an animal when his two pedigreed hunting dogs disappeared from his smallholding in Bottelary Road in mid-October. This happened about a month before the border police saved 24 puppies from being smuggled from the Western Cape into Angola in November, and today Geldenhuys, an avid animal lover and chairman of the Boland Falconry club, realises that his dogs could well have been stolen by a highly organised animal smuggling syndicate. “My dogs were like my children and it is hard to explain the void that has been left. Not knowing where they are or whether they are alive makes it all the worse, as one can’t find closure,” he told TygerBurger in a recent interview. However, as his search for his dogs unfolded, Geldenhuys was dumbstruck to discover that the majority of animal welfare organisations operate exclusively in an enclosed environment. “I sent the details and pictures of my dogs to all the organisations listed as well as veterinarians only to realise that they are not at all connected with one another, thereby limiting the scope tremendously when searching for a lost animal,” he said. In the wake of international pet smuggling being exposed in Cape Town, a man from Brackenfell is currently in the process of developing a unique system to help pet owners find their lost animals.

Geldenhuys is of the opinion that while this is a step in the right direction, this system needs to be improved to serve its intended purpose. The CityPetFinder searches through a single database of all the animals in the care of the city’s 21 registered animal organisations. It was created in partnership with all the organisations and because it has a broader database it greatly improves the chances of finding missing pets. “One probable flaw is that this system does not provide for owners to post photos of their animals on the database, making the identification process problematic.” Furthermore Geldenhuys, who attended the initiation workshop of PetFinder, also feels that “in-fighting and politics” between the different animal organisations could result in a lack of co-operation. “Each organisation is responsible for its own funding and solely dependent on its own resources for survival, often vying for outside support. “At the workshop the City was criticised when discussing the programme,” he said. Hence, Geldenhuys recently appointed LPF systems to develop a program and requested the endorsement of the South African Veterinary Association for the website. “The pet and pet food industry is huge, as the primary needs of pets are basically food and care. “So if all roleplayers from chain stores, vets and animal welfare organisations and the police could be connected in a simple way to share information and be publicly visible through technology, fewer pets will end up in shelters ,” he said. – info@primepetcare.co.za

Current roadworks and construction update Although construction work of the new sewer link of about 30m length at the intersection of Lubbe Street and Wellington Road in Durbanville has been completed last week, the sidewalks must still be reinstated. The reinstatement of the sidewalks will be done within the next couple of weeks before the upcoming builders’ holiday, which starts on 16 December. The work took place between an existing

sewer along Wellington Road and a new collector sewer. This requires that the left turn lane of Lubbe Street and the outside lane of the dual carriageway of Wellington Road – both sides of intersection in direction of Durbanville Mediclinic – be closed for traffic. This is being done with the necessary temporary road signage as required in terms of health and safety regulations.

Traffic flow through this intersection in all directions operates as normal and no roads will be closed or traffic rerouted. In other construction work on the water pipeline in Voortrekker Road – between Church Street and Wellington Road – old water pipes have been replaced before the final resurfacing of Voortrekker Road. The contractor has replaced an old, brittle 50mm diameter asbestos water pipeline.

Domestic workers to get wage increases DESIREÉ RORKE

Domestic workers can look forward to an early Christmas this year, thanks to a recent increase in minimum wages by the department of labour. As of 1 December, the minimum rate for a domestic worker in Cape Town for the next three years will be R8.34 per hour, R375.19 per week and R1 625.70 per month. In cases where the domestic worker works for fewer than 27 hours per week, the minimum wage is R9.85 per hour, R265.95 per week and R1 152.32 per month. In smaller municipalities the minimum wage is R7.06 per hour, R317.62 per week and R1 376.25 per month. Although this eight percent increase helps to ease poverty, experts believe it is still a long way off from doing away with the current exploitation in this labour sector. “Even though the minimum wage has increased it is still ridiculous that these workers are paid so little. These rates should be seen as the absolute minimum to be paid and not as a general guideline,” said Bernard Reisner, an independent labour consultant in Cape Town. The minimum wage was laid down by labour minister Mildred Oliphant in terms of the Basic Conditions of Employment Act, which regulates this sector. According to Reisner this minimum will be enforced by labour inspectors doing routine visits and can be made an order of court in terms of the abovementioned legislation. Reisner says that domestic workers across the city are paid anything from R4 000 per month to as little as R800 per month. “In suburbs such as Constantia I have come across domestic workers paid as much as R4 000, whereas in lower income areas, the wage is the bare minimum,” he said. A quick survey done in parts of the northern suburbs indicated an average wage of anything between R110 and R150 per day, where domestic workers work only one or two days for a family. Where they are employed full-time the average wage is estimated around R2 500 to R3 000 per month, depending on whether they live in or not. More and more families however opt for the “piece job” system where domestic workers work only one or two days per week. Ek stap met my honde, hul kry beter behandeling as die meeste mense in my lewe en hul is gelukkige diere. Die katte is die probleem, hulle teel aan, word nie reggemaak nie, en die kleintjies wat dan gebore word, word gelos om rond te loop en in bome te klim! Dit is ’n groot probleem vir ons (slaappille in die nag werk ook nie) aangesien die mense glad nie omgee wat die katte doen nie. Met die gevolg dat my hon-

Maar die hond kry geen aandag, ween die heeldag, word saans uitgeskel en dit veroorsaak dat die arme dier mishandel word. Wanneer gaan mense besef kos en water is nie al wat ’n dier nodig het nie? Ek het self honde en ek probeer my uiterste bes om hulle nie toe te laat om onnodig te blaf en ’n oorlas vir my bure te wees nie. Ek deel die sentimente van Anti-Blaf en stem 100% saam oor blaffende honde (“Hondegeblaf kort strenger wetgewing”, TygerBurger 30 November). ’n Blaffende hond is vir enige normale persoon onaangenaam en irriterend. Ongelukkig is nie almal normaal nie. Die feit is egter dat wetgewing niks aan die probleem sal verander nie. Ek kan baie uitbrei oor blaffende honde, want ek is self ’n “slagoffer van selfsugtige bure”. Ek weet hoe dit voel om van my rus en vrede ontneem te word, op my eiendom, waar ek rustig in my tuin wil (en mag) sit, en ontspan. En ook om dan veroordeel te word as die een wat onnodig kla. Ongelukkig sal daar altyd onbedagsame mense met ons wees. Om mooi te praat help nie. Diesulkes, met ’n opinie (soos my bure) van “honde blaf, dis wat hulle doen”, het duidelik nie die intelligensie om te verstaan dat honde geleer en beheer moet word nie. Honde byt ook, dis wat hulle doen. As ’n dier tussen mense bly, moet dit by menslike reëls inpas en nie ’n las raak nie. Dit is ook ’n frustrasie om met sulke bure te kommunikeer aangesien hulle slegs hul eie opinie het. Feit van die saak is, dis ’n doodloopstraat indien jy van die owerhede verwag om jou reg op rus en vrede te beskerm. Diere wat verkeerd behandel word, en nie reg geleer word nie, raak probleemdiere, en probleemdiere word van kant gemaak. Mense wil honde aanhou, maar hulle wil nie die verantwoordelikheid wat daarmee gepaardgaan, aanvaar nie. Sulke mense kan nie van regdenkende mense verwag om daagliks deur ’n hond gefrustreer te word, en niks omtrent die saak te doen nie. Money a hurdle on way to the champs ANDRÉ BAKKES

It almost seems as if Joostenbergvlakte’s Georgia Biet, 17, overcomes obstacles on a daily basis.

When she rides on eightyear-old thoroughbred Amico she leaves a trail of 1,2 metre obstacles behind her and when she lives life she kicks dust in the eyes of life’s tribulation. She simply refuses to take one step back. The Western Province champion in her class has been chosen to represent the province’s equitation team at the South African Championship in Durban, which starts this week Friday, but she is well short of raising the funds she needs to go. This will, however, not stand in her way, since she is determined to go – come hell or high water. “It will cost me R13 500 to go,” she says wide-eyed.

Her mother contributed her Christmas bonus and Georgia has been saving money nonstop to realise her expensive dream. Her father’s untimely death rocked the Biet family, but as the saying goes: “If you fall off the horse, get back on.” Georgia has fallen off numerous times, and once her horse even stepped on her head, but this never deterred her. A true horse person is someone who not just loves to ride, but lives to ride! Georgia was on a horse when she was just five weeks old. There are several horses on their smallholding, which she rides for the owners to earn extra money. In contrast with her friends, Georgia cannot spend this money on socialising, since she must use every cent to further her dream of excelling in the 1.30 metre class. “I already qualified for 1.30, but the extra 10 centimetres

might give Amico a bit of a fright,” she says. It is a careful juggling act to stay on top of her Grade 11 school work, play hockey and ride horses. After school she plans to go into horse physiotherapy. Funding to ride in competitions is perhaps the biggest hurdle of all, but the giving nature of strangers is seeing her through. “Sometimes people will see me riding on a horse in the road and then just give me R100!” Without the help of these donations, Georgia cannot continue. “It costs us about R4 000 to R5 000 a month to keep Amico,” she says. She badly needs a sponsor, so someone or some company’s name could advertise and support a worthy cause at the same time. Anyone who can help Georgia can contact 084 910 2689 or 084 481 3132.

Cops need public tipoff Kraaifontein police are appealing to the public to help them with regard to a murder that took place on 23 February. The police were called to a house in Eikendal, where they found the body of Julius David. He had sustained injuries to his face, which led the police to believe that he fell. Capt Gerhard Niemand, spokesperson of the Kraaifontein police said no foul play was suspected until after an autopsy had been done. Magical walk among the birds ANDRÉ BAKKES

While walking through the surreal World of Birds Wildlife Sanctuary in Hout Bay it’s easy to become overwhelmed. There’s simply too much to experience. Admiring crazily colourful parrots, shoe-pecking crows and wingdragging turkeys alone can take up to two hours – and there are 400 different species there, ranging from birds to mammals and reptiles. TygerBurger dropped by the biggest bird park in Africa to see if it’s worth the trip and entrance fee. The first of the 100 aviaries on the four hectare sanctuary was enough to make the trip worthwhile (it was filled with nature’s clowns – parrots). Animal enthusiast and park manager, Hendrik Louw, says with a smile: “We drive north to go visit wine farms, so they should drive out here to experience wildlife in the city.” He reasons one should make a day trip out of it, because it takes “interested” visitors about three hours to walk through all the enclosures. Photographers should double that and take extra batteries. Louw continues: “Where else can one picnic with flamingoes? Yet, one of our biggest attractions is the ‘monkey jungle’, which contains 27 monkeys. “They are so trusting that a mother and her young will literally sit on your shoulder!” A huge number of animals have

been injured in the “wild” and are now recuperating in the park, while others have been purchased or donated to add some variety. Louw says there was a time when they encouraged breeding, but now it’s solely up to the birds whether they “do it or not”. One particular story springs to his mind when asked if birds are intelligent: “A long time ago we tried to breed the goffin cockatoo, so we put two in each cage, which were then placed in a long row. But the next day all their enclosures were open.

“This happened for a few nights until we decided to ‘stake’ them out. We saw that once we had closed everything, one of the goffins would stick his foot out and open his latch, and then it would open everybody else’s!” This well-maintained and intimate park went through a difficult period in 2010. Talks of possible closure were, however, nipped in the bud by an anonymous well-wisher when she donated R100 000 into the park’s bank account. And the winners are ... Nicola Neutt from Muizenberg and her fiancé, Christo Kruse, are the winners of the TygerBurger/Spring FAB WinaWedding competition. They have won a wedding valued at R77 350. Nicola and Christo have been engaged since March and plan on getting married late next year.

In an attempt to reduce the fatalities on Western Cape roads, provincial government decided to bolster resources to increase safety. The Safely Home road safety plan for the festive season was recently launched by Western Cape ministers Dan Plato (community safety), Robin Carlisle (transport and public works), and Theuns Botha (health). The safety plan will aim to integrate the approach between the ministries, including roadblocks, management of public transport vehicles and speeding, number plate recognition, and available law enforcement personnel. “Together with all other law enforcement agencies we are bolstering resources to increase safety and combating reckless behaviour on

our roads. “Last weekend alone 12 fatalities were recorded in the province and we are leaving no stone unturned to prevent incidents from happening in the first place,” said Plato. “During this period all our law enforcement operations will be integrated with SAPS and our local traffic departments as well as other role players like SARS and home affairs. “Our integrated weekend alcohol operations will continue during this period and motorists can be assured that in this province they will be stopped and tested for driving under the influence.” . Report traffic violations to the provincial traffic hotline on 021 812 4581/2. The hotline is operational 24 hours a day.

‘Prank emergency calls are no joke’ MARANA BRAND VAN HULSTEYN

Seventy percent of all calls made to the City’s 107 Public Emergency Communication Centre (PECC) are prank or nuisance calls – mostly made by schoolchildren playing jokes. These shocking statistics came to light after TygerBurger enquired about the workload of the centre. During August, September and October this year, the centre handled about 30 000 calls per month. Of these roughly 20 000 each month were prank calls, John Ellis, PECC

manager, said. This is consistent with the same period in previous years. Unfortunately these calls can cause delays in the ability to answer other calls relating to life or property threatening situations, which could lead to resultant losses, Ellis explains. These figures do not include “hoax” calls where someone claims to have a critical situation and when emergency services arrive, it simply is not. For example, people say they are seriously hurt or in extreme danger while they are only suffering from a headache or

“heard something” in the back yard. According to JP Smith, the City’s mayoral committee member for safety and security, it can be assumed that these hoax calls are often made simply to get attention. “Sometimes people also call when they just need a ride to the hospital.” Most prank callers are schoolchildren. “The number of prank calls increases after school hours and over all school holidays. “Normally they just swear at the operator, are extremely rude or don’t say anything at all,” Smith

said. Ellis said in many instances the callers are children merely “playing” with the phone. He said it is unfortunate, however, that operators have to be subjected to “extremely unpleasant utterances and comments” from the prank callers. Smith said it is an offence to make a prank call to emergency services, but it is difficult to track down the perpetrators. According to Ellis, most of these nuisance calls are made from public phones and are short-lived. “While the exact location of these

phones is available on our systems, it is extremely difficult to catch the perpetrators.” Smith called on parents to educate their children about emergency services and their importance. “They should teach their children that it is wrong to make prank calls,” he said. . The PECC is a multidisciplinary emergency contact centre within the City of Cape Town’s safety and security directorate. The operator will gather the necessary information and ensure that the correct service provider or providers respond.

Topnotch waterskiing for lake The country’s top tournament waterskiers will be descending on the picturesque Bon Esperance lake just south of Malmesbury for four days of skiing. The competition includes a night slalom competition tomorrow night, and the West Coast Championships which culminates on Sunday. The large field of nearly 40 skiers representing all age groups will participate in all three tournament disciplines – namely slalom skiing around buoys, thrilling ramp jumping and trick skiing. Several Western Province waterskiers have fared well at international tournaments this year, with Gabriella Viljoen, 18, hoping to improve on her astonishing half buoy on 11,25 metres in slalom to break yet another South African record.

Senior skier Jan Johnson took her third gold medal at the European/ African (EA) championships for slalom this year, and is currently ranked number two in the world in her age group. Fifteen-year old Eamon van der Merwe, from Parklands College, was the youngest skier to qualify for the EA u-21 Championships taking place in Kakemas, South Africa next year, and he had a podium result for slalom at the EA u-17 champs in Europe this year. Other top skiers include Durbanville High School’s Louis Schutte and dramatic ramp jumper Simon Fairbank from Milnerton amongst a sprinkling of Namibian skiers. Skiing gets under way at 08:00 each day from Friday, with the night skiing starting tomorrow at 20:00. Entrance is free. Bon Esperance is situated on the N7, just 15 kilometres south of Malmesbury.
