) Scottsdene delays get attention

Go­ahead for housing ANDRÉ BAKKES

The four-year delay to build about 2 200 housing units in Scottsdene will not be prolonged, according to Councillor Grant Twigg, despite a recently submitted subcouncil motion.

Twigg said a decision on the motion by Bergdal Subcouncil will in all probability only be made in February next year, but this will apparently not interfere with construction plans, which have already commenced.

Among other points, the motion was drafted to get permission from Council to limit the number of bonded houses from about 1 500 to 600, since many of those who will stand to benefit from this project earn too little to qualify for a bank loan.

The rest of the houses will be rented out.

Twigg also told TygerBurger that Scottsdene has been “left behind” in terms of development, especially when compared with neighbouring Wallacedene and Bloekombos.

“Scottsdene has not seen development over the last 40 to 50 years,” he explains before adding that most of the previous beneficiaries from Wallacedene and Bloekombos were not even on a waiting list.

There are apparently “over 6 000” Scottsdene residents on this list.

“There are so many that some of them might never find a house,” he continues.

The process to build units started in 2007, and after various community participation meetings and a rezoning appeal, things are finally falling into place.

Another point in the motion addresses the potential allocation of these units. In the motion it is envisioned that 60 percent of the units should go to Scottsdene residents already on the waiting list, 20 percent to Scottsdene backyard dwellers and 20 percent to residents from Scottsville, Eikendal and Kraaifontein.

When asked why these houses will not be reserved for Scottsdene alone, he responded: “The City of Cape Town has a policy that allocation for houses cannot be limited exclusively to where they were built.”

“Finally, the Subcouncil suggests that Council consider contracting someone to manage the letting if City administration lacks the capacity.”

The issue of backyard dwellers in Scottsdene is, according to Twigg, “a huge problem”.

Norman Grovers, chairperson of the Backyard Residents’ Association of Scottsdene (BRAS), agrees wholeheartedly with the “magnificent” Twigg.

“About a year ago there were approximately 1 300 structures in backyards of Scottsdene. They house on average five people per structure!”

He sums up the dire situation when he says he is aware of one situation where 12 people live in a six metre by three metre wendyhouse.

Grovers concludes by urging “backyarders” to register with BRAS, since the City will work from the list when allocating new houses.

Sy het onlangs ’n hartoperasie ondergaan omdat haar een hartklep gesplete was en daar ’n opening is waar twee van die hartkamers ontmoet.

TygerBurger het voor die operasie in Junie in die berig getiteld “Harte oopgemaak vir 7-jarige” geskryf oor hoe dankbaar Nell-Marie se ouers was vir al die hulp wat hulle gekry het om geld vir die operasie in te samel. Volgens Elanza het die operasie baie goed verloop en NellMarie voel al baie beter.

Nell-Marie sal weer volgende jaar Februarie dokter toe moet gaan, maar Elanza is vol moed. “Sy is piekfyn,” verduidelik Elanza. “Ons is almal baie bly dis verby!”

Nell-Marie het blykbaar die hele naweek lank fietsgery en elke keer moes Elanza saamry op haar eie fiets.

“Nell-Marie het ook elke keer saam met haar pop gebad,” lag sy.

“Ek kan nie genoeg dankie sê aan almal wat ons oor die maande gehelp het nie. Reach for a Dream en Herzlia Middle School het iemand gehelp wat hulle nie eers ken nie.

Baie, baie dankie!”

Sy het weer eens die Laerskool Fanie Theron bedank, asook familie en vriende vir hul volgehoue ondersteuning.

Nell-Marie Thiart (7) was een van die gelukkigste meisies in die hele wêreld Vrydag toe Reach for a Dream vir haar ’n pienk fiets, ’n valhelm en ’n pop wat kan swem, gegee het.

Dié leerling van Laerskool Fanie Theron het nog so saam met haar graad 1-klasmaats gesit toe al die aandag skielik op haar was.

Groot oë het Reach for a Dream ingewag. Toe Nell-Marie egter besef dat al hierdie mense daar was vir haar was sy eers baie skaam, maar sy kon nie lank haar glimlaggie wegsteek nie.

Haar ma, Elanza, en haar peetma, Jacqui Fourie, het al die mense aan die klas voorgestel.

Die geskenke is gekoop deur Reach for a Dream, maar die geld is ingesamel deur die gemeenskapsaksiegroep van Herzlia Middle School. Hierdie skool was verteenwoordig deur ’n onderwyser, Margie Cook, en die aksiegroep se Zena Kruss van der Heever, Tarryn Sher en Caitlyn Ross (almal graad 9). Die Reach for a Dream-verteenwoordiger, Lorinda Rodriguez, was ook deel van die groep.

A freak accident at the Brackenfell Train Station landed a man in hospital last week.

According to W/O Erica Crouse, spokesperson of the Brackenfell Police, the man, approximatley 30, waited for the train to Cape Town on Platform 1, at about 09:45 last Thursday morning.

“When the train stopped, the doors for some reason did not open. We are not sure whether he tried to force the doors open or not, but he did try and board the train and when it started moving again he fell in between the train and the platform,” she says.

He is in a stable condition.

Twee in Kraaifontein vermoor Motoriste in botsings teikens ANDRÉ BAKKES

Motoriste wat in ’n ongeluk betrokke is, blyk ’n maklike teiken vir opportunistiese misdadigers te wees. ’n Jong vrou (23) van Table View was op 18 November betrokke in ’n taamlike ernstige ongeluk op die N1 net buite Kraaifontein. Terwyl sy in haar motor gewag het vir die nooddienste, het twee middeljarige mans haar gedreig en toe haar selfoon gesteel.

Die verdagtes het blykbaar oor ’n draad langs die deurpad gespring en haar met ’n skroewedraaier gedreig. “Hulle het gelukkig net haar selfoon gesteel, maar dit wys jou nou net – mense, veral meisies, moet altyd op hul hoede wees,” waarsku die klaer se ma.

Haar dogter was op pad van Stellenbosch na Kaapstad toe sy in ’n botsing met ’n vragmotor betrokke was. Volgens die ma was haar dogter “pimpel en pers” gestamp, maar sy was gelukkig nie te ernstig beseer nie. “ ’n Man het die ongeluk gesien gebeur, maar terwyl hy na die vragmotorbestuurder ge-

hardloop het, het my kind skielik twee gesiggies deur die ruit sien loer !” Die anonieme slagoffer gee toe vir die twee mans haar selfoon. Sy het die voorval aangemeld by die polisie.

“Ek is ’n bietjie bekommerd oor die feit dat my dogter nou eksamen skryf en dat sy nog berading moet ontvang van die polisie,” sê die ma.

Volgens haar moet mense nie dink dat daar sekere situasies is waar misdadigers jou alleen sal los nie.

Die woordvoerder vir Kraaifontein se gemeenskapspolisieforum, pastoor Chris Ferreira, dui aan dat misdadigers sommer langs die pad sal wag vir ’n maklike teiken.

“Dit is orals op die N1 en N2 ’n probleem. Dit is belangrik dat bestuurders ’n plan A en B het ingeval hulle in ’n ongeluk is of as hul voertuig langs die pad gaan staan. Volgens Kraaifontein se polisiewoordvoerder, kaptein Gerhard Niemand, is Kemp vermoedelik ná ’n argument deur sy seun met ’n mes gesteek. Jud is deur “onbekendes” in die bors geskiet.

They were armed with paint, a few paint brushes and incentives from the City of Cape Town (CTC). The mission was to rid Northpine of graffiti-splattered walls, which presumably, act as a magnet for unsavoury characters.

Northpine Neighbourhood Watch recently painted over graffiti at Northpine Educare and Ridgeview Park in what is an initiative from the City.

According to the public relations officer of the watch, Craig Wakefield, graffiti devalues

property prices and attracts people such as drug dealers.

“Painting over the graffiti is really just a test,” he explains before adding that they got paint, paintbrushes and a bicycle from CTC. “Kids hang around near graffiti, and even sell drugs there,” he continues.

The watch’s plan is to clean graffiti on stop signs and electrical boxes over the coming weeks.

Meanwhile, Wakefield says that armed gangsters come from other areas into Northpine, so he warns parents to always know where their children are – especially at night.

Thief caught red handed ANDRÉ BAKKES

A suspected car thief was arrested in Oregan Way on Saturday night after he broke into a car which was parked next to the road.

The Northpine Neighbourhood Watch came across the scene at about 22:30 during their usual round of patrols.

One of the watch’s volunteers, Sudhir Singh, elaborates, “We saw two cars speed past us and decided to follow them. They led us straight to a house in Oregan Way.” Here they found a suspect who was caught in the act of stealing a City Golf by the vehicle owner. The person apparently phoned

his friends, who raced over to his house, who in turn led the watch’s members to the residence. Singh continues, “We found a whole bunch of keys on the suspect, which could be used to open a variety of vehicles. We contacted Kraaifontein Police and the man was arrested.”

According to him it is vital for vehicle owners to park away from the street, but if this isn’t possible then they must ensure that there are no valuables left in the car.

The watch’s public relations officer, Carig Wakefield, used the opportunity to ask members of the public to help them in their fight against crime and become guards.

Sy lewe verander ná droom

Man hurt in rail accident

Die diep, donkerblou depressie het die godsverlate gevangene beetgehad en hom na die bodem van wanhoop begelei.

Hy het al lankal moed opgegee en die lewe het niks vir hom beteken nie.

Toe, in sy benoude tronksel, het die Here ingegryp en hom na die oppervlakte gehelp.

Die misdadiger wat vir tien jaar tronk toe gestuur was vir die kaping van ’n vragmotor, onthou baie goed die oomblik toe alles radikaal verander het.

“Ek het ’n droom gehad waar die Here saam met my gewandel het en toe wys Hy vir my die hel. Dit was ’n put van vuur en mense,” sê pastoor James Marengoe (47).

“Die Here het met my gepraat en gesê dat daar ’n uitkoms was, maar dat ek eers ’n keuse moes maak. Daarna het ek wakker geskrik en die sweet het my afgetap. Ek het dadelik begin huil.”

In 2004 het dié misdadiger ’n Christen geword en vir vier jaar het hy intensief in teologie studeer.

TygerBurger het besluit om James se merkwaardige storie te vertel nadat sy Bybelsklool-studente vandeesweek gegradueer het. “In 1994 het ek en drie vriende ’n vragmotor vol visolie gekaap, maar êrens het inligting uitgelek en die aand van die kaping het hordes polisiemanne op ons toegesak. Ek was lam geskrik. Hier ry ek nog en toe sien ek net ’n klomp ligte en hoor die stemme skree.”

Hulle was vir ses maande in die selle by die Maitland-polisie aangehou en toe later het hy vier jaar in Pollsmoor gewag vir die verhoor. Die regter het James uiteindelik in 2002 tot 10 jaar tronkstraf gevonnis – van Pollsmoor tot Helderstroom tot Brandvleimedium. Sy familie en vriende het hom verwyt en hy het die lewe verwyt.

A freak accident at the Brackenfell Train Station landed a man in hospital last week.

According to W/O Erica Crouse, spokesperson of the Brackenfell Police, the man, approximatley 30, waited for the train to Cape Town on Platform 1, at about 09:45 last Thursday morning.

“When the train stopped, the doors for some reason did not open. We are not sure whether he tried to force the doors open or not, but he did try and board the train and when it started moving again he fell in between the train and the platform,” she says.

According to Crouse, the man sustained head and shoulder injuries and was transported to Tygerberg Hospital where he is in a stable condition.

Marengoe staar peinsend na die muur.

“Ek het so laag gedaal dat ek ’n opdrag aan my manne gegee het dat as hulle gevangenes sien wat preek, hulle hul moet verwilder en stilmaak.” Hy het sy verhaal al vir baie mense vertel, maar vir ’n oomblik klink dit of hy vir die eerste keer daaroor praat.

“Ek het selfmoordneigings gehad. Een aand het ek ’n tou aan die vensterbank vasgebind en my nek in die strop gesit. En ek het gehang, maar ek het my hande in die tou gehad. Die drommetjie was ook nie ver weg nie, so ek kon myself loswikkel.”

Dit was tydens sy laagste punt dat James gedroom het van die hel. “Ek het onmiddellik ’n pastoor gaan sien en hy het sy hande een keer geklap en gesê, ‘Die Here het met

jou gepraat. Wat gaan jy doen omtrent hierdie saak?’ Ons het ’n gebed gehou en daar – daar! – het ek my hart aan die Here gegee.

Die 15de van die vyfde maand in 2004.”

Vier jaar later is hy op goeie gedrag vrygelaat. Hy het ver in teologie studeer en honderde motiveringsessies en preke vir die ander gevangenes gehou.

“Ses maande voor my vrylating het ek weer ’n droom gehad. Die Here het vir my in ’n stem wat weerklink, gesê dat van die mense daar buite ’n gebrek het aan kennis en wysheid. Hy het toe vir my gesê ek moet ’n Bybelskool begin. Later vra ek toe vir Hom vir ’n vrou, ’n werk en ’n kar.” ’n Paar wonderwerk-gevulde jare later en James het ’n geliefde vrou, ’n werk by Imperial Cargo, ’n “lekker karretjie”, en ’n geakkrediteerde Bybelskool met 30 studente en vyf gekwalifiseerde lektore by die Assembly of God in Kraaifontein.

Stienie inspireer polisie met oproepe ANDRÉ BAKKES

Die inspirerende Kraaifontein-inwoner sit voor die telefoon en wonder wie sy vandag gaan bel.

Wat van Worcester-polisiestasie? Sy bel hulle en vra om met die stasiebevelvoerder te praat.

Die persoon aan die anderkant praat en ná ’n lang gesprek, sit hy die telefoon neer. Hy skud sy kop, maar hy glimlag van oor tot oor.

Stienie Stoffberg (65) het nou net vir hom gesê hoe baie sy die polisie se harde werk waardeer.

Een klein oproep het sy lewe verryk. Stienie inspireer die polisie op ’n daaglikse basis.

“Ek bel landwyd! Musina, George – enige plek.

Ek vra eers vir die persoon wat hul rang is, en dan spreek ek hom of haar aan op hul rang. Ek het absoluut respek vir die polisie en stel belang in wat hulle doen. Dit is baie belangrik vir my om te weet ons manne in blou is veilig. Hulle het seker die ondankbaarste werk in die land, want almal pik op hulle en niemand het ’n goeie woordjie vir hulle nie, en dit maak my briesend,” sê sy. “ ’n Polisie-beampte is ’n spesiale mens. Nie enigiemand kan na ’n moordtoneel gaan en bewyse bymekaar maak nie. Nie enigiemand kan na ’n meisie se ouers gaan en vir hulle sê dat hul dogter verkrag of vermoor is nie.”

Sy sal vir hulle dan mooi vra om versigtig te

wees en tog hul veiligheidsbaadjies te dra as hulle weet hulle gaan in ’n gevaarlike gebied in, want “vir elke man wat seerkry, is daar ’n vrou en kinders wat agterbly, en vir elke vrou is daar ’n man wat agterbly”.

Wanneer Stienie gevra word hoe sy voel as sy hoor ’n polisie-beampte is beseer of vermoor, bly sy vir ’n oomblik stil. “Ek kry so ’n koue gevoel, dan word ek kwaad, en dan voel ek baie hartseer. Die polisie is baie na aan my...” Vir ’n oomblik lyk dit of sy die trane wegsluk.

Daar is geen spesifieke rede hoekom sy voel dat sy die Suid-Afrikaanse polisie moet ondersteun nie, maar dit is duidelik dat dit ongelooflik baie vir haar beteken.

“Die waardering en die dankies is genoeg vir my. Dit maak daardie paar sent wat ek uitgegee het om te bel, die moeite werd. Die ou by Musina kon dit nie glo dat ek bel nie,” lag sy.

“Hy het gedink dis ’n set-up, en wou onmiddellik weet hoekom ek nou so iets sou doen. My dank kom baie diep uit my hart uit.”

Partykeer gesels sy tot ’n halfuur met die polisie. Volgens haar is haar telefoonrekening “ ’n ander storie”.

Sy sê daar is baie pessimisme oor haar ridders.

“Net omdat daar een vrot appel in die mandjie is, beteken dit nie dat almal sleg is nie. Die grootste gros van hulle is goeie mense!” sluit Stienie af.

Stienie Stoffberg probeer elke dag ’n ander polisiestasie bel om vir lede dankie te sê vir al hul harde werk.

Blitz on drunk driving Committee: A teenager (17) from Durbanville was caught red-handed in a roadblock driving his parents’ vehicle without permission and without a licence while being under the influence of alcohol.

He was one of 18 motorists who were arrested in Durbanville in roadblocks on Friday 18 November on charges of driving under the influence of alcohol.

The boy’s breathalyser test registered 0,96 mg/1000ml of breath, which was the highest reading for the evening, said Chief Inspector Merle Lourens, media spokesperson for traffic services of the City of Cape Town.

When officers contacted the suspect’s parents to notify them of the arrest, they indicated that they would come to the police station immediately.

“However, they called back after a few minutes on realising that their vehicle, a light delivery vehicle, was missing from the garage.

“They were shocked to find that their son had taken their vehicle without permission,” Lourens said.

The boy was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and driving without a valid driver’s licence.

On that same day traffic officers also arrested 19 motorists in Kleinvlei, nine motorists on Victoria Road in Camps Bay and 14 in Old Oak Road in Brackenfell – all on charges of driving under the influence of alcohol.

Altogether 129 suspects were arrested for over 1 000 traffic-related offences over just

four days during operations focusing on illegal drag-racing and drunk driving.

Of these a total of 264 speeding offences were recorded on Durbanville Road between Eversdal and Doordekraal. The highest speed recorded was 128km/h in a 60km/h zone.

On Fairtrees Avenue between De Bron and Sports Road 124 speeding offences were recorded – the highest speed recorded at 111km/h in a 60km/h zone.

Another 105 motorists were caught for speeding in Old Oak Road between Mountain View and Durban Road. The highest speed recorded was 98km/h in a 60km/h zone.

Also on Friday, traffic officers conducted a clampdown operation on heavy vehicle over-loading on the R102 in Eerste River.

Officers tested 142 trucks – nine of which were found to be over-loaded. A total of 13 offences related to over-loading were recorded.

Later that day, officers arrested 21 drunk drivers on Van Riebeeck Road in Kuils River and 20 drunk drivers in Belhar.

One of the motorists arrested in Kuils River was found to be a repeat drunk driving offender. He was also arrested in September on drunk driving. Both arrests were made on Van Riebeeck Road. His breathalyser tests registered 0,43 and 0,52mg/1 000 ml of breath respectively.

On Sunday 20 November another motorist was arrested in Durbanville for drunk driving.

Test and win a means to end The Western Cape government’s announcement that money can be won in an HIV/Aids campaign, has been castigated by the South African Medical Association (Sama), who went as far as to call it unethical.

Unethical? It’s a means to an end. It’s time organisations such as Sama get off their high horses and find workable solutions to problems such as the high rate of HIV/Aids infections.

It was a brilliant idea by the Western Cape premier to get the average Joe Soap excited about a touchy issue. Who wouldn’t want to win R50 000 in cash, especially before Christmas?

Just as the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children campaign, which kicked of last week Friday, was starting to lose momentum, our premier had a lightbulb moment.

It’s not as if the Western Cape’s voluntary testing programme hasn’t been a success (1 042 902 people have been tested this past year), there are still way too many who haven’t. And this is where the risk lies. Zille has a point when she says urgent intervention is required to protect women and children from becoming infected with HIV/Aids – directly linked to high levels of sexual violence.

If it takes a bit of money to persuade people to get tested, why not?

Hondegeblaf kort strenger wetgewing Om snags wakker geblaf te word, is om van gek te word. Om na ’n siek persoon of klein babatjie om te sien met ’n ewigdurende geblaf in jou ore is net so erg, hetsy dag of nag.

Het ek as wettige eienaar nie die reg om in my eie huis en op my eie werf, na ’n lang dag by die werk en ure in die verkeer, rus en vrede te geniet nie? Daar is niks wat so irriterend is soos die aanhoudende geblaf van honde nie. Gaan ry in Proteahoogte, Brackenfell – spesifiek in Fidelio-, Lotus-, Herta- en Lamentostraat – en luister hoe klink dit van Maandag tot weer Maandag.

Moet bewoners dan eers gewaarsku word deur wetstoepassing en gedreig word met prokureursbriewe en hofsake? Wat het geword van goeie buurmanskap en respek vir ander rondom jou?

Watter soort mens gaan bedags werk, voel vere vir sy sogenaamde “troeteldier”, en gee saans met tuiskoms ook geen aandag aan hierdie dier nie? Die meeste honde kry ook geen oefening nie en word bedags in ’n klein agterplasie gelaat. En dan noem hulle hulleself diereliefhebbers! Mense moenie voorgee dat hulle diereliefhebbers is en honde aanhou om diewe en inbrekers af te skrik nie.

Dit is ’n ou afgesaagde storie en beteken nie veel nie. Die ergste is egter dat bewoners ook nie Saterdae en Sondae wanneer hulle wel tuis is, die honde stilmaak nie.

As jy by wetstoepassing kla, is dit ’n uitgerekte storie wat maande duur en na skriftelike waarskuwings en ’n boete, is dit geen uitgemaakte saak dat die probleem opgelos gaan word nie. Daar is ’n wet wat sê ’n hond kan vir elke halfuur vir drie minute aaneen blaf en elke uur vir ses minute, maar as die hele buurt se honde aanhoudend blaf, is dit om enige persoon teen die mure uit te dryf.

Ek was nog altyd ’n hondeliefhebber maar na dese voel ek net uiters gefrustreerd oor honde wat sonder ophou blaf, som vir twee ure aaneen.

Hierdie saak kort dringende aandag en baie strenger wetgewing.

Ek glo dat mense presies weet wanneer hulle honde ’n oorlas, sonde en ergernis vir hulle bure is. Om egter ’n ordentlike gesprek daaroor met hulle te voer, is hopeloos. Jy word in die vieslikste taal denkbaar gevloek.

As mense nie eers respek vir hulleself het nie, watter respek, omgee en deernis het hulle vir hulle diere? En daar is nog altyd eienaars wat nie hulle honde aan leibande hou nie en hulle laat los rondhardloop in woonbuurte. Hoe skrikwekkend is dit nie vir mense en ander diere nie!

En spreek jy só ’n eienaar oor sy onverskilligheid aan, word jy óf geïgnoreer óf gevloek.

Ek sou baie graag wou sien dat munisipale honderegulasies by munisipale diensterekenings ingesluit word, sodat alle inwoners dit kan sien en lees wat dit behels en dienooreenkomstig daarop kan reageer.

Ons is almal mense, alhoewel nie almal eenders nie. En omdat ons nie almal eenders is nie, dink ons verskillend, voel ons verskillend, reageer ons verskillend en tree ons verskillend op. Omtrent 99% van hondegedrag is die eienaars se eie skuld. Behandel jou hond soos jy jouself en jou kind behandel. Sal jy jou kind dag en nag laat huil en by die deur laat uithardloop die ooptes in? Diere kan nie praat nie en kan nie hulleself help nie. Hulle is aan die genade van die mens oorgelaat.

Gee jou hond die nodige liefdevolle aandag, oefening, genoeg kos en water, die nodige spasie. As jy dit nié kan doen nie, moenie honde aanhou nie!

Die spreekwoord sê: “ ’n Hond is die mens se beste vriend.” Ek is baie dankbaar dat ek nie ’n hond is wat aan die genade van ’n mens oorgelaat is nie! Jammer aan diereliefhebbers wat nie hieraan skuldig is nie. Hulle is egter dun gesaai.

ANTI-BLAF-BRACKENFELL E-pos

Laat ek dit nou maar erken, ek is ’n sucker vir ’n bargain. En so slaan ek toe nou die dag die jackpot.

Ek was op pad Strand toe met die kleingoed, almal ingelaai en vasgegordel, toe ek net so anderkant ons fancy Zevenwacht Mall ’n bordjie sien wat in mooi groot rooi letters sê: FOOD FACTORY SHOP. Ek kon sommer voel hoe my hart vinniger begin klop van opgewondenheid en sonder om twee maal te dink, draai ek toe links by die verkeerslig in by Saksenburg Park 2 opsoek na ’n bargain.

Daar vind ek toe ’n juweel van ’n plek!

Die winkeltjie is gepak van hoek tot kant vol kos! Uiteindelik het ek dit gevind!

More than 5 000 volunteers are needed to form a human/teddybear chain in aid of abused children.

Christmas is a time for giving and in this time, Tygervalley Centre is reaching out to children who won’t be able to experience the love and

joy during this most giving time.

“We couldn’t help but think of the children and decided to join hands, literally, with the TygerBear unit for abused children by hosting the Holding Hands campaign at the centre, but we need everybody’s help,” says Hajni Lamberti, marketing manager for the centre.

On Saturday 10 December between 09:00 and 11:00, all TygerBear supporters will gather on the upper level parking deck of the centre, forming a human teddybear-chain, in the form of a massive teddy bear.

“We are looking for more than 5 000 volunteers, so grab your kids, uncle, aunts, grans and even your neighbours, all aimed at creating awareness for abused children in South Africa. Who knows, maybe we will make a Guinness Record!”

Wishtree bears Xmas fruit Gifts are streaming in for the Tygervalley Shopping Centre’s Wishtree Initiative – four trolleys have been filled with presents.

Hajni Lamberti, marketing manager of the centre, said people who have taken tags from the tree should return the gifts to them as soon as possible.

“Anybody else who still wants to wrap

a gift for this initiative, can bring the gift, with a tag indicating if it is for a boy or a girl, and their age, to the centre,” she said.

“Improvisation on blues is where the purity comes from.”

So says Riaan Smit, front man for Crimson House Blues, who know all about improvisation.

Riaan explains that while they do do some of their songs on stage, most of what they do is improvised on the spot.

Even the band’s inception was thanks to a bit of improvisation.

Riaan was doing a solo set and pulled in the band’s current banjo player and lead guitarist, Arno van Zyl. Later, sitting at the bar after the show, the two discussed the idea of forming a band and so, Crimson House Blues was born.

Originally from Namibia, the band members are now based in Table View, Monte Vista and Durbanville with Jacques Jansen van Rensburg on bass and Christoph De Chavonnes Vrugt on drums.

Music fans may recognise some of the band members from their previous bands, Azrail and The Broken Result.

When asked how a musician makes the shift from metal to blues, Riaan jokes: “You just go backwards.”

Arno describes Crimson House Blues’ music as “feel good music” while Jacques adds that it’s “rugged drinking music”.

“It inspires you to quit your job, leave your wife and start drinking,” Riaan jokes.

Tina says that theirs is a strange combination.

“Not only do we have a musical combination that works, we also have a deep-rooted friendship,” she says.

“Her absolute confidence and control on stage makes it so easy to play guitar alongside her,” Bob says of Tina.

Bob says their song list is steadily growing and promises: “Every time we do a show, there will be a new song.”

You can catch the Washline Spiders live on Saturday at the Sound Studio in Milnerton or on Wednesday 21 December when they play at Obz Café.

My tuisgemaakte geskenkies kom gewoonlik uit die kombuis uit. ’n Paar jaar gelede het ek alles in ’n decoupage-artikel omgeskep as dit net lank genoeg stilstaan, maar dis iets waaraan jy heel jaar moet werk om teen Kersfees genoeg geskenkies te hê.

Vandag se resep is een van my gunstelinge. Dis baie maklik om te maak en dit smaak hemels – tradisionele Skotse brosbrood. Tuisgemaakte brosbrood kan natuurlik geensins met die winkelrak-weergawe van “eet-nog-een” vergelyk word nie. As jy eers jou eie brosbrood gebak en uitgedeel het, sal die

skimpe gou-gou inrol vir nog.

Tuisgemaakte brosbrood val deesdae in die luukse eetgoed-kategorie, omdat egte botter duur is. My resep lewer omtrent 48 vingers wat jy in pakkies van byvoorbeeld agt kan opmaak as ’n geskenkie.

Die Skotte eet brosbrood tradisioneel op Oujaarsaand. Myne hou gewoonlik nie so lank nie!

Tradisionele Skotse brosbrood (± 48 vingers) 500 g Botter (kamertemperatuur) 200 ml Strooisuiker 560 g (4 koppies) Koekmeel 60 ml (¼ koppie) Mielieblom (Maizena) 3 ml Sout Gewone witsuiker om bo-oor te

strooi. Voorverhit oond tot 150 ºC. Room die botter en strooisuiker saam. Sif die meel, mielieblom en sout saam en meng dit in by die bottermengsel. Dit is nie nodig om die oondpan te smeer nie. Druk die deeg in die pan en indien verkies, kan jy ’n mooi randjie rondom vorm. Onthou om vingers af te merk en die deeg te prik. Bak ongeveer 1 uur. Laat ekstra 10 tot 15 minute baktyd toe, indien nodig. Sny versigtig in vingers en plaas op ’n draadrakkie om af te koel. Strooi suiker oor terwyl dit nog warm is. . The two main types of fires in Cape Town, vegetation and structural, can be prevented in most cases.

Informal settlements are the highest at risk. It is essential that they: . Limit ignition sources; . Keep areas around heating and cooking devices clear of any material, and . Keep roadways around the structures clear of obstructions to allow emergency vehicles to move around under emergency conditions.

A few ways to prevent both vegetation and structural fires include: . Do not discard burning cigarettes from your vehicle. They are pollutants and one of the causes of vegetation fires. Use the ashtray in the vehicle; . Buy a fire extinguisher and keep it in an accessible place in your home; . Every home should have more than one exit to ensure escape if a fire breaks out; . Informal homes should be built at least three metres apart to stop fires from spreading; . Do not overload your electrical circuits – don’t keep more than four plugs in one extension; . Never leave a paraffin appliance unattended. It only takes a second for a gust of wind, pet or child to knock over a light or stove, and . Make sure paraffin appliances are on a flat, firm surface.

Cars Fine whether Classic or not The Fine Cars and Classic Cars racing segment, started 21 years ago by Johan Pretorius, is growing in stature.

Hennie Bosman came second in Heat 1 in the Fine Cars race at the last event held at Killarney recently.

For the final championship held on 22 October, a record entry of 34 cars entered.

“Fine Cars should be the feeding ground for Classic Cars. Basically, we race road-legal cars and only a few modifications are done for the racer’s safety. We recommend a roll-bar, improved brakes and increased tyre pressure for the day as well as fire extinguishers,” says the chairperson of Fine Cars, Johan JayBee Pretorius.

Pretorius started racing 21 years ago in his white BMW 2002 and today still enters races with his old faithful car. “During the last few years, the cut-off dates for classics were capped as prior to 31 December 1977. From this, you can assume

that a lot of cars would therefore not qualify to race with Classic Cars, and this is the gap that we as Fine Cars, try to fill. Dates changed from December 1986 to 1989 and a change in system from the handicap system to an index system (voted in for 2011 and 2012 season).

“During this year, we were looking for some fast cars and also some competition, for our Marcos V8 of Stephen David and Clive Spolander with his Jaguar XJS V12. This is where Hennie Bosman, with his Corvette ZR1 and Gunter Droskie, with his Chev V8 coupe, fit in,” said Pretorius.

Bosman finished fourth for consistent lap times making him a worthy opponent for the seasoned veterans.

Spolander won the overall competition.

Next year the season starts early February.

Training camp challenges newbies to join No-one trains harder, builds tougher and runs leaner than a professional fighter.

The AWA (Africa Wrestling Alliance) boasts a full complement of wrestlers ranging from aerial athletes to technical grapplers, hardhitting brawlers and ultimately masters of every technique, able to fluidly swap between them to suit the fight ahead.

You can become a professional wrestler, or just enjoy the confidence that comes from mastering the discipline of professional wrestling. Our camp provides you with a positive outlet for your competitive spirit and a chance to better yourself.

Wian Engelbrecht van HS Brackenfell is gekies vir die WP se o.17B­krieketspan wat gedu­ rende Desember aan ’n provinsiale toernooi in Kaapstad gaan speel. Wi­ an is die enigste speler wat uit die noordelike voorstede gekies is. Hy het reeds die afgelope maand 303 lo­ pies gemoker.

Vaar puik: Leerders van Laerskool Totius het op 20 November aan die Delheim­bergfietsrykompetisie oor 7 km in Stellenbosch deelgeneem. Zander Kruger, Francois Grobbelaar en Regard Visser het puik vertoon.

Cycle or run through beautiful Grabouw valley Start your holiday season with an outdoor event in the beautiful valley near Grabouw.

Oaklane Cottages will be the host for a fun ride on 3 December and will offer three distances on wonderful trails in the Lebanon Forest.

This started as an exclusive ladies’ mountain bike event and was held in 2005 for the first time when more than 100 ladies took part in

wet conditions.

From 2008 men were allowed to start in their own group in the front and assisted the girls on the route and gave them right of way in the single track sections. The event has become a real family affair as the routes offer something for everyone.

This year, the organisers from Dirtopia will also give the runners

a chance to enjoy the beautiful trails (10km and 26km) in the Elgin Valley.

The 3km is ideal for the kids.

Farm roads, some climbing and fun downhill to finish is on the cards.

The 10km is an easy to moderate route with mostly jeep track (roads). Orchards, wooded areas, pine plantations, dams and streams.

The 26km is a moderate to difficult route.

Entry fees range from R40 for the kids to R100 late entry for the long MTB route. Riders will save if they pre-enter before the end of November.

The first Wings and Wheels Show at AFB Ysterplaat takes place on Friday and Saturday.

Gates open at 06:00 with the airshow officially starting at 09:00 and closing at 16:00.

The Airshow will include SAAF displays by the Gripen – Hawk, Augusta and C47-TP. Add Hunter, Buccaneer, Provost, L39 and the magnificent P51 Mustang – T28 Trojan and Focke Wolf 149 At this stage 4km Speed Fencing is in place to accommodate 300 cars in two blocks of 100 and 200 respectively.

Confirmation is expected that the Sasol Rally Team will be present with one MSport S2000 Ford Fiesta and both Mark Cronjé and Jon Williams as drivers. Representing the absolute pinnacle of special stage rallying the Sasol Team will undoubtedly attract much attention.

Known as the Mayor of Mykonos no introductions are needed when Werner Koekemoer is mentioned and he is in the process of fitting a twin turbo 335i engine to his already extremely impressive BMW 1 rally car. Bellville, Tygerberg-klub en Kuilsrivier is al drie stewig in die saal in die jongste reeks eersteliga-krieketwedstryde in die WP, maar ’n hele paar ander spanne in die Tygerbergstreek voer ’n opdraande stryd.

Bellville (234/4) is op pad na ’n groot oorwinning oor St.Augustine (67) ná knap bydraes deur William Hantam (70), Bradley Barnes (55), Renier Munnik (32* en 3/17) en Buren Hendricks (3/14).

Universiteit Wes-Kaapland, die ander Tygerbergse span in die topafdeling, kry egter onverwagte kwaai teenstand van Pinelands (219/6). UWK het op 102/8 gesteier voordat ’n onoorwonne negendepaaltjie-vennootskap van 79 lopies tussen Nkululeko Serame (41) en Nathan Swartz (37) tot die studentespan se redding gekom het en ’n skaflike telling van 181/8, gesl., bewerkstellig het.

Tygerberg-klub (240/9, gesl.) is op die wen-

pad teen Montrose (122) danksy Randall Florence (89*), Denver Carolus (41), Luwaaz September (5/34) en Brendon Philander (3/41). En so ook Kuilsrivier (286/5, gesl.) wat Langa (54 en 64/5) in ’n wurggreep het.

James Carolus (6/33 en 3/38), Neil Claasen (4/9 en 75), Clinton Dyason (53) en Heathcliff du Plooy (52*) was verantwoordelik vir die Kuile se gesonde posisie.

Durbanville (166/9) trek egter lelik noustrop teen Glamorgan (292/7, gesl.) vir wie Aldo Jantjies (127), Stanton Marinus (72) en Sheldon Adams (5/27) kookwater was. Jaco Castle (65) en Michael Thomas (30) was al Durbies wat die mas opgekom het.
