Twintig jaar se lief en leed lê tussen dié vier mure vasgevang. Mure wat ’n gesin veilig gehou en herinnerings vertroetel het. Mure wat nou swart gebrand is, die dak verwoes, die inhoud heeltemal vernietig. Maandagmiddag het Anna Lourens en ’n vriendin, Cherna Whitehead, nog rustig in die kombuis in Jansenstraat 7, Parow, gesit en gesels. ’n Uur of wat later was daar van die hele huis net verbrande brokstukke, gebarste vensters en

smeulende as oor. Anna sê terwyl hulle gesit en kuier het, het sy gewonder hoekom die huis skielik so warm voel. Sy het uitgegaan en rook by die een venster sien uitkom. Sy het na haar kleindogter se kamer gehardloop. “Ek kon niks sien nie. Daar was oral net rook. Rook het uit die plafon geborrel. Ek het haar en die hond net gegryp en uitgehardloop,” het Anna Maandag vertel. Haar drie-jarige kleindogter, Charnickhé Lourens, het in daardie stadium nie klere aangehad nie, maar daar was nie tyd om iets te gryp nie. Gelukkig het sy nie

brandwonde opgedoen nie. Anna het mense in die straat gestop en gevra hulle moet die brandweer bel. Kort daarna het die nooddienste opgedaag en die vlamme geblus, maar die skade was reeds gedoen. Anna het onder in die straat gestaan en hulpeloos toegekyk hoe elkeen van haar aardse besittings deur die vuur verteer word. Daar is geen hoop dat dié goed wat haar lewenspad saam met haar geloop het, ooit weer vervang kan word nie. Anna en haar man, Louis, wat vroeër vanjaar afgetree het, het geen versekering nie. “ ’n Mens

dink mos niks kan met jou gebeur nie,” het Anna hartseer gesê. Sy vertel dat hulle so lank al ’n platskermtelevisie wou hê. Twee weke gelede het dié heerlikheid hom in hul huis kom tuismaak – net om weer dramaties van hulle weggevat te word. Sy sê sy is veral hartseer oor haar versameling handsakke wat sy in die brand verloor het. “Al my klere is uitgebrand. Al my makeup ook. Hierdie is al wat ek het,” en met ’n bewende hand wys sy na die klere wat sy aanhet. Charnickhé het stuurstof vir rookinaseming by die brandweer

se brand- en reddingsdienste gekry, maar is verder ongedeerd. Niemand anders is in die brand beseer nie. Terwyl TygerBurger op die toneel was, het weldoeners reeds vir die gesin kos gebring, iemand anders het toiletware gebring. “Ek weet nie wat ons nou gaan doen nie. Ons sal seker vanaand by familie slaap,” het sy verslae gesê. Volgens Theo Layne, woordvoerder van die Stad Kaapstad se brand- en reddingsdienste, word vermoed dat die brand veroorsaak is deur Charnickhé wat met vuurhoutjies gespeel het.

Local Pet Detective sniffs around DESIREÉ RORKE

In the wake of international pet smuggling being exposed in Cape Town, a man from Brackenfell is currently in the process of developing a unique system to help pet owners find their lost animals. During October, Wehahn Geldenhuys experienced the pain of losing an animal when his two pedigreed hunting dogs disappeared from his smallholding in Bottelary Road in mid-October. This happened about a month before the border police saved 24 puppies from being smuggled from the Western Cape into Angola in November, and today Geldenhuys, an avid animal lover and chairman of the Boland Falconry club, realises that his dogs could well have been stolen by a highly organised animal smuggling syndicate. “My dogs were like my children and it is hard to explain the void that has been left. Not knowing where they are or whether they are alive makes it all the worse, as one can’t find closure,” he told TygerBurger in a recent interview. However, as the search for his dogs unfolded, Geldenhuys was dumbstruck to discover that the majority of animal welfare organisations operate exclusively in an enclosed environment. “I sent the details and pictures of my dogs to all the organisations listed as well as veterinarians only to realise that they are not at all connected with one another, thereby limiting the scope tremendously when searching for a lost animal,” he said. Although the City of Cape Town recently launched a CityPetFinder on their website, Geldenhuys is of the opinion that while this is a step in the right direction, this system needs to be improved to serve its intended purpose. The CityPetFinder searches through a single database of all the animals in the care of the city’s 21 registered animal organisations.

It was created in partnership with all the organisations and because it has a broader database it greatly improves the chances of finding missing pets. “One probable flaw is that this system does not provide for owners to post photos of their animals on the database, making the identification process problematic.” Furthermore Geldenhuys, who attended the initiation workshop of PetFinder, also feels that “in-fighting and politics” between the different animal organisations could result in a lack of co-operation. “Each organisation is responsible for its own funding and solely dependent on its own resources for survival, often vying for outside support. “At the workshop the City was criticised when discussing the programme,” he said. Hence, Geldenhuys recently appointed LPF systems to develop a program and requested the endorsement of the South African Veterinary Association for the website. “The pet and pet food industry is huge, as the primary needs of pets are basically food and care. So if all roleplayers from chain stores, vets and animal welfare organisations and the police could be connected in a simple way to share information and be publicly visible through technology, fewer pets will end up in shelters ,” he said. “This system alone will make perpetrators think twice before abducting a pet.” Since TygerBurger published his letter on 9 November, calling for support and sharing the story of his lost animals and the search that ensued, he has received about 200 emails from local pet owners, 47 within in the first 24 hours, who support him in this venture. When up and running the system will host a database for the public to list lost and found animals, in a program that is interactive and connected to all the relevant roleplayers, without the “politics”. The case will also be lodged with the police, in order to obtain a case number, should the pet be seen somewhere. – info@primepetcare.co.za

More plots at cemeteries There is more burial space now at the Welmoed cemetery with the completion of the Welmoed extension cemetery. The cemetery situated between Eerste River and Kuils River was short of burial space, thus the area next to the original Welmoed cemetery were extended by the City. According to information provided by the City of Cape Town’s parks department the new burial areas are fully operational and burials have begun here at the beginning of November. Currently the Welmoed cemetery has a maximum of ten burials per day, but the City aims to increase this limit next year. The Welmoed cemetery offers a choice between private full monumental graves and berm graves.

Berm graves are a cheaper option and limit the family to headstones only. No monumental work is allowed to be done on the surface of the grave. Families can also request the use of these two private grave options for second burials if families request a re-opening and sufficient depth is confirmed. Second burials or burials on top of another family member causes no disturbance of the first buried coffin in any way. This practice is therefore being encouraged so as to provide more space in existing cemeteries. Calendar cause: This heartwarming calender of the Uitsig Animal Rescue Centre in Durbanville – featuring photographs of abandoned and neglected dogs that have been rescued by the organisation – is sold in aid of the organisation’s sterilisation project in townships. “Sterilisation is the only way to curb the suffering, illness and starvation which the unwanted animals endure,” said Di Fraser, a volunteer of the organisation and editor of the calendar. The Uitsig Animal Rescue Centre has a target to sterilise 2 000 animals in 2012.The public can help them reach this target by buying a calendar. Nog mense – ook in Bellville en Brackenfell – het na bewering deurgeloop onder die lang vingers van ’n vrou wat haar as ’n huishulp voordoen, maar dan haar werkgewers besteel. TygerBurger het verlede week berig oor ’n voorval waarin ’n duur trouring van Asmeralda Davis (27) op 16 November by haar huis in Sonstraalhoogte in Durbanville gesteel is. Die netjies geklede vrou, wat haar as Lizzie voorgestel het, het aan haar deur geklop en om werk gevra, omdat sy glo eers die middag later ’n taxi kon huis toe neem. Sy het aangebied om die huis skoon te maak vir net R50, omdat “dit al so laat was”. Sy vertel dat sy ’n enkelouer is en op die plaas Zevenwacht bly. Sy het na bewering ’n trouring van R44 000 en ander juweliersware gesteel, vermoedelik terwyl sy in die slaapkamer gestofsuig het. Volgens Elzanne le Roux van Protea Village, is dit presies dieselfde storie wat ’n vrou einde verlede jaar aan haar vertel het toe sy nog in Midas-singel in Oakdale gewoon het. Die vrou het glo sportskoene, klerasie, asook kinderklere en lekkergoed gesteel. “Sy het gevra vir ou beddegoed. Ek het haar ’n duvet belowe, wat sy die volgende dag by my moes kom haal, maar sy het nooit opgedaag nie,” het sy gesê. Volgens Le Roux het sy die verdagte verlede Vrydag nog in hul woonbuurt

Haar seun het gesê sy het vertel dat sy ’n pakkie by ’n gastehuis daar naby moet gaan afgee, maar het nooit weer teruggekom nie. Sy het later ontdek dat haar juweliersware van R15 000 weg is. Sy het ’n klag by die polisie aanhangig gemaak, maar nooit weer van die polisie gehoor nie. Volgens Moorcroft het sy van ’n soortgelyke voorval net twee maande gelede in hul meenthuiskompleks gehoor. Dennis Kanye of Booka T Entertainment said they contacted the police to get rid of the people outside, but police vehicles just came and left again without any action. lack of enforcement on the side of the police. “It is all good and well to host events and to make money, but there rests a responsibility on the organisers to ensure the safety of all at the event. Where alcohol is involved strict enforcement must take place,” he said. “It is our call to the councillors, relevant mayco member and the provincial commissioner of the police to take note of this incident and to ensure that this incident is fully investigated and never repeated,” he said. George Sieraha, chairperson of the Durbanville Community Forum (DCF), said he was phoned by several outraged residents. “Meerendal cannot not accept responsibility for what happened, even though it was not on their land. The reality is that they created the environment and the spin-off was really dangerous. “The situation was so serious that I called the mayco member for safety and security, JP Smith, to send reinforcements. I also contacted the sector commander of the police to send reinforcements,” he said.

This resulted when more people turned up than expected at a jazz festival that was held at Meerendal. Provision was made for 2 000 people and only that number of tickets were sold by Computicket. When people were not allowed to enter, they held their drinking picnics alongside Vissershok Road until late. In one incident a drunk man broke into a nearby farmhouse to have a nap. He was removed by a private security company. Two police officers, who were at the festival but allegedly did nothing to control the crowd, left after they were called to an accident scene on Contermanskloof Road, where they got lightly injured when a passing car hit the police car. The jazz festival was presented by Booka T Entertainment in collaboration with Synergy Events. The gates opened at 12:00 and the jazz bands performed from 16:00 to 21:00. According to Willi Botha, general manager of Meerendal Wine Estate, the lawn of Meerendal was hired to these companies for the event and Meerendal had nothing to do with the organising of it. “Our agreement was that the premises is only suitable for 2 000 people. It also included that they need to have the correct permits and have organised traffic and police assistance. “A total of 23 security officers were also present within the premises to make sure people stayed within the pre-arranged borders,” he said. “It was a family day. No incidents occurred within our premises and no damage was done to our property,” he said. Botha said Meerendal cannot be held responsible for the way people misbehave outside the farm gates. He also added that it was “their duty to stimulate tourism”. “We have the right to say yes if an event can bring 2 000 people, who have never visited our wine region before, to our farm.” According to Botha, only about 600 tickets were sold by Friday. “Nobody could have foreseen that so many people would turn up,” he said. “The police should have acted against the people outside the premises and asked them to leave. The police had the responsibility to see to it that people do not drink in public,” he said. “Some people witnessed how the police took alcohol off some people, but then they

Die Laerskool Mikro se pre-primêre afdeling het gedurende 2011 ’n herwinningsaksie met hope geesdrif van stapel gestuur. Herwinning is in die klassies behandel en dit is ook deurgevoer tot by die jaarlikse pre-primêre konsert met die tema “Gaan groen!”, wat in September plaasgevind het. Die Stad Kaapstad het onlangs begin om herwinning in te sluit by hulle vaste afvaldiens. In sekere voorstede word ekstra vullisdromme of sakke uitgegee waarin inwoners hul herwinbare materiaal kan sit, wat dan weer deur die munisipaliteit verwyder word. In Kuilsrivier is daar egter nog nie so ’n diens nie en die naaste stasie waar alle soorte

herwinbare produkte afgelaai kan word, is in Panorama. Die gebrek aan ’n eenstopherwinningstasie ontmoedig inwoners dikwels om te herwin. Mikro het dus besluit om ’n herwinningsaksie van stapel te stuur en by die pre-primêre afdeling van die skool te begin en dit namate uit te brei na die hoër grade. Vier kleurvolle herwinningsdromme is bestel, wat deur EcoDrive-EcoLight, Fair Deal Wooden Windows, Marais Eiendomme en die Snyder-gesin geborg is. Die dromme is helderkleurig om dit aantreklik en prettig te maak: groen (glas), blou (papier), rooi (alle soorte blikkies en botteldoppies) en geel (plastiek). By drie verskillende geleenthede het ’n TygerBurger-leser dié man van donker gelaat in ’n rooi Volkswagen op verskeie plekke in die noordelike voorstede sonder petrol aangetref. “Die eerste keer het ek hom by Louis Leipoldt-hospitaal gewaar waar hy my geld gevra het vir petrol. Ek en my vrou het hom toe na die vulstasie vergesel waar ons petrol vir hom gekoop het. “Hy het gesê dat hy die oggend vroeg na die hospitaal moes jaag, want sy vrou is swanger en daar was komplikasies. Daar was ’n vrou by hom in die motor. Hy het ook toe vir my gesê dat hy by N1 Stad se HiFi Corporation werk,” sê Jaco Janse van Rensburg. Volgens Janse van Rensburg het die man homself voorgestel as Gareth. By ’n tweede geleentheid was hy by CapeGate-winkelsentrum, en het die man volgens Janse van Rensburg mense voorgekeer en geld gevra. “Ek het hom dadelik gevra

hoekom hy nou weer geld soek. Hy het my herken en daarna vermy. Die volgende dag het ek vir HiFi Corporation by N1 Stad gebel en hulle het gesê dat daar nie ’n Gareth vir hulle werk nie.” Verlede week is hy vir ’n derde keer gesien. “Ek was op pad werk toe en sien hom toe langs die pad op die Old Oak-brug staan waar hy probeer om motoriste te stop sodat hulle hom weer met petrolgeld kan help,” sê Janse van Rensburg. “Ek het gestop en hom weer gekonfronteer, maar hy het dadelik teruggeklim in die motor en wou nie verder met my praat nie. “Hy het ook ontken dat hy al by Louis Leipoldt-hospitaal was, dat sy vrou swanger is en dat hy by CapeGate vir geld gevra het.” Janse van Rensburg sê dat die man al die vorige ontmoetings ontken het, maar hou voet by stuk dat dit dieselfde man is. “Ek wil mense net waarsku teen hierdie man. Hy het elke keer ’n ander storie.” Hoewel TygerBurger nie die man kon identifiseer nie, het ons dit eens dat hy heeltemal te jonk lyk om van genadebrood te lewe.

Military vets must register The Department of Military Veterans (DMV) is cleaning up its database. The cleanup ends on 14 December and all military veterans and dependants of deceased military veterans are called to register their names on the database. According to Tsete Motumi of DMW, the initiative is to determine those who are deceased but still on the database, update personal details of military veterans and include information on military veterans and dependants pertinent for socio-economic support. Military veterans with force numbers and who are currently registered with the natio-

nal database are urged to present themselves to the South African National Military Veterans’ Association (SANMVA). Dependants of deceased military veterans must register in order for their information on their family ties to be updated. The process to register bona fide military veterans yet to be registered with the database will follow immediately after the database cleanup process. Lewegewende geskenke beter “The gift that keeps on giving.” Dié uitdrukking is veral waar wanneer organe ná iemand se dood geskenk word. Een persoon se organe kan sewe lewens red – letterlik. Dis daarom besonder bewonderenswaardig dat die 19-jarige Jacques du Preez sélf voor sy tragiese dood besluit het om ’n orgaanskenker te wees. Hy is verlede week in ’n ongeluk dood nadat hy en twee vriende van ’n nagwaak vir hul vriend, Corné Hale, terugkom het. Waglyste vir organe is onmenslik lank. Omdat nie een van ons dink aan die verskriklike moontlikheid om self eendag organe vir oorlewing nodig te hê nie, dink ons nie daaraan om ons s’n vir skenking beskikbaar te stel nie. Dit kos niks, absoluut niks, om ’n paar mense hul lewe terug te gee of een mens weer te laat sien nie. Duisende kosbare organe gaan ná mense se dood eenvoudig verlore. Duisende mense gaan dood omdat hulle juis daardie organe broodnodig het. Is jou organe nie ’n wonderlike, onbaatsugtige geskenk om ná jou dood vir ’n paar mense te gee nie? Is dit nie ’n wyse, onselfsugtige besluit uit liefde vir jou naaste geneem terwyl jy nog lewe nie? Ons salueer jou, Jacques, jou en al die ander wie se geskenk van liefde lewe gee en bly voortleef. . Geluk by ongeluk:

Louis Lourens glimlag baie breed nadat kontant wat in ’n baadjiesak was, uit sy huis in Parow gered is. Sy huis het Maandag (5 Desember) heeltemal afgebrand. Hy het die jong manne in die agtergrond gevra om te help om klere uit dié kamer te gooi op soek na iets wat in die brand behoue gebly het. Kollekteer eintlik vir hul eie sak Vir ’n baie lang tyd het ’n baie gesette blanke vrou by ’n winkel in Welgelegen gesit en kollekteer vir “Mount Zion Care Centre” (NPO nr. 014640). Sy het ook ’n helper gehad, ’n bebaarde blanke man wat by ’n winkel in Panorama gesit en kollekteer het. Hulle was naweek vir naweek op hulle pos met breë glimlagte op die gesig. Mense het goedgunstiglik geld ingegooi vir die “arme kindertjies”. Niemand van ons het ooit daaraan gedink om die geloofwaardigheid van hierdie organisasie te bevraagteken nie. Ongelukkig vir hierdie vrou het sy teenstrydige stories aan my en ’n vriendin vertel toe ons probeer vasstel waar die sogenaamde kinderhuis geleë is. Dit het ons agterdogtig gemaak en daartoe gelei dat ons die webwerf www.dsd.gov.za, waar inligting in verband met sulke organisasies beskikbaar is, besoek het. ’n Organisasie met ’n soortgelyke naam en nommer was wel voorheen geregistreer as ’n “Non Profit Organisation” (NPO) in die OosKaap, met die kontakpersoon ’n ene Dianne Parkin. Dit word egter nou op die webwerf aange-

dui as “deregistered” en daar is vir jare geen rekord van enige geld wat inbetaal is nie. Bogenoemde inligting is aan die polisie gerapporteer en daar was intussen ’n insident waartydens hierdie vrou voor die winkel in Welgelegen deur die polisie verwyder en gewaarsku is. Na bewering is hierdie mense egter nog steeds besig om by ander plekke te kollekteer. Ons besef dat die winkeleienaars goed bedoel, maar hulle moet asseblief seker maak van die geldigheid van sulke organisasies, voordat hulle mense toelaat om te kollekteer. Die publiek sal ook meer bedag moet wees op sulke wanpraktyke en word aangeraai om ook op bogenoemde webwerf vas te stel of die organisasies wel geloofwaardig is. Ek weet dis miskien baie gevra, maar hoe anders sal ons daarin slaag om sulke mense te stuit? Hulle ontsien selfs nie eers onskuldige kinders nie, want die geld is eintlik vir hulle bedoel. Vanoggend kom ek by die werk met ’n lied in my hart, maar die lied het gou verdof. By die oprit van die werk, sien ek uit die hoek van my oog ’n katboks staan. By nadere ondersoek vind ek toe dat dit nie leeg is nie, maar dat daar ’n pragtige kat in is. Die eienaars het haar net daar kom los met ’n brief wat vir ons vra om vir haar ’n nuwe huis te soek. Die vrae wat by my opkom was: Hoe kan enigiemand ’n troeteldier net so aflaai? Is ’n troeteldier nie veronderstel om deel te wees van ’n gesin nie? Sus die briefie die eienaars se gewete? After a long, rainy winter many of us look forward to returning to the outdoors for afternoon braais, picnics and lazing around the pool. An unfortunate fact is, however, that every year as temperatures increase, so do the number of poolside accidents. Drowning is the second leading cause of unintentional injury-related death among children ages one to 14 and the leading cause of death among children ages one to four. About 350 children under five drown in our pools each year. Another 2 600 children are treated in hospital emergency rooms each year for near-drowning incidents, and many suffer brain damage as a result. While children also drown in buckets, ponds, dams, the sea, rivers and even in drains, the Child Accident Prevention Foundation of South Africa says the most likely cause of death for children under five in well-to-do homes is drowning in the family pool. And enough pools we South Africans have – almost a million, mainly in middle to upper income households. In most homes, there is no appliance, device or gadget that has the same potential for personal disaster than a swimming pool. Here are some tips to prevent drowning: 1. Supervision, supervision, supervision. A child should never swim alone. Always know where your children are. 2. Seventy percent of all calls made to the City’s 107 Public Emergency Communication Centre (PECC) are prank or nuisance calls – mostly made by schoolchildren playing jokes.

And the winners are ... Nicola Neutt from Muizenberg and her fiancé, Christo Kruse, are the winners of the TygerBurger/Spring FAB WinaWedding competition. They have won a wedding valued at R77 350. Nicola and Christo have been engaged since March and plan on getting married late next year.

These shocking statistics came to light after TygerBurger enquired about the workload of the centre. During August, September and October this year, the centre handled about 30 000 calls per month. Of these roughly 20 000 each month were prank calls, John Ellis, PECC manager, said. This is consistent with the same period in previous years. Unfortunately these calls can cause delays in the ability to answer other calls relating to life or property threatening situations, which could lead to resultant losses, Ellis explains.

These figures do not include “hoax” calls where someone claims to have a critical situation and when emergency services arrive, it simply is not. For example, people say they are seriously hurt or in extreme danger while they are only suffering from a headache or “heard something” in the back yard. According to JP Smith, the City’s mayoral committee member for safety and security, it can be assumed that these hoax calls are often made simply to get attention. “Sometimes people also call when they just need a ride to the hospital.” Most prank callers are schoolchildren. “The number of prank calls increases after school hours and over all school holidays. “Normally they just swear at the operator, are extremely rude or don’t say anything at all,” he said. Smith added it is an offence to make a prank call to emergency services, but it is difficult to track down the perpetrators.

They called it the passion flower, hence the name passion fruit. Granadilla, on the other

hand, is derived from the Spanish for pomegranate, namely granada. 1 x 80 g packet lemon jelly 250 ml (1 cup) boiling water 30 ml (2 tbsp) white sugar 10 ml (2 tsp) lemon juice 1 x 500 g tub (500 ml/2 cups) lowfat plain yoghurt 2 x 110 g or 115 g cans granadilla pulp Dissolve the jelly in the boiling water. Add the sugar and lemon juice. Stir very well. Allow to cool for 20 minutes at room temperature. Add the yoghurt and mix very well until smooth. (I use a

wire whisk.) Pour into eight small dessert bowls, small cups or glasses. Leave in the fridge until set. This will just take an hour or two. Spoon the granadilla pulp over the top and serve. Woensdag 7 Desember 2011 Table Mountain Cableway will be hosting several specials and events over the holidays. From Saturday (10 December) to Sunday 15 January children visiting the mountain will receive a 20page activity booklet and a treasure hunt on Table Mountain.

Table Mountain ‘child friendly’ On Christmas eve and Christmas day children can meet Father Christmas at the lower station at 11:00 and the top station at 12:00.

On New Year’s eve, there will be a sunset special, where one can watch the last sunset of 2011. Tickets for this cost R97.50 for

adults and R47.50 for children. The last car up on New Year’s eve is at 23:00, and the last car down will be at 01:00.

Topnotch waterskiing for lake The country’s top tournament waterskiers will be descending on the picturesque Bon Esperance lake just south of Malmesbury for four days of skiing.
