Euthanasia shocker DESIREÉ RORKE

Can the battle against pet overpopulation be won? This is the question an independent filmmaker Riaan Hendricks is doing his utmost to unravel with the movie Wild Dog – a movie the NSPCA would rather not have see the light of day. This film, which is still to be completed, is an eye-opener that turns the spotlight on the plight of hundreds of thousands of domesticated cats and dogs that are euthanised each year. Especially now, over the festive season when these numbers increase significantly. It is an observational documentary, which draws the viewer into the lives of the people struggling to stem the tide of unwanted animals and its impact on society. The film focuses on and plays off at the Helderberg Animal Welfare kennels where approximately 140 animals are euthanised each month – a conservative estimate according to Julia Evans, general manager at the organisation. This kennel serves only the Helderberg and surrounding area, and already cannot cope with the influx of unwanted animals. Sick animals or those with behaviour problems are put out first, to open up space for new animals coming in, and so the cycle continues. “We absolutely hate euthanasia, but we are chock-a-block – our kennels, foster care and adoption systems. We are left with no choice,” she

says. According to Evans, the situation had reached crisis level years ago, and that something drastic needs to be done. Evans supports this movie, and hopes that it will bring the necessary awareness. Alarmingly, Evans and the Helderberg Animal Welfare, is the only organisation TygerBurger spoke to, willing to blow the lid off the euthanasia debacle. Both the AACL (Animal Anti-Cruelty League) and the SPCA in Cape Town, have declined to make public the number of animals euthanised by them. René Southwood, manager at the AACL, is of the opinion that these figures will make the public “angry” and that this kind of awareness won’t solve the problem either. Also, Sarah Scarth from the SPCA in Cape Town wishes not to release their euthanasia statistics, but does confirm that the number of stray animals admitted over the past few months has increased. “The numbers of strays admitted in November was up by 39 percent and this puts even more pressure on our kennels ... At this time of the year we also see the number of surrendered animals increase – animals handed over to our animal care centre by owners who no longer want them or can afford them. Christine Kuch, spokesperson of the NSPCA (National Council of SPCAs), slammed Hendricks and the film, saying that this kind of publicity will turn the public to pro-life (no-kill shelters), resulting in the SPCA losing financial benefactors. “We also question certain aspects of the film in legal terms,” she said, referring to Hendricks filming the animal inspector of Helderberg Animal

Welfare going to a house to pick up a sick dog. According to Kuch, the inspector in the film must be qualified, and must have the magisterial authority to come onto the property to remove the animal and that a minor is not allowed to be interviewed. Hendricks however confirmed that the girl in the film is 18 and that the particular animal owner contacted the Helderberg Animal Welfare and requested them to come and take their sick dog. “We worry about the impression this movie will give the public. It undermines our message,” she said, and says Hendricks must be careful not to get himself prosecuted. “The sad reality is that ‘any port in a storm’ is not an option. Finding someone to take an animal to avoid euthanising it, is irresponsible. Animal collectors are devious and many people are misguided when they take an animal, especially if they are told or have been led to believe that euthanasia might be imminent. This is emotional blackmail, impulse adopting and the long-term welfare of the animal is put at risk. It is inhumane to confine animals for long periods. “Stress results and this may lead to behavioural problems which may never be overcome – rendering the animal even less likely to be ‘adoptable’ or to settle in a home,” the NSPCA’s standard policy on euthanasia reads. Filmmaker Hendricks however disagrees with Kuch and still hopes that the NSPCA will support the movie. “What makes the story moving and engaging is the compassion with which such emotional demanding work is done.” He is now seeking public funding for the completion of the film via http://www.indiegogo.com/wilddog. . Hendricks hopes that once the film has been completed it will be used countrywide by communities and animal welfare organisations to make the public aware of the crisis and the importance of sterilisation. The fact that sterilisation is the only longterm solution is one thing all animal welfare organisations agree upon. Also, according to Tamsin Nel, CEO of SA Mass Animal Sterilisation Trust, sterilisation is actually financially more viable than euthanasia. Her research shows the cost of one female dog being sterilised coming to R431, compared with the cost of one rescued animal being euthanased coming to R572, after 10 days of ken-

nelling. She came to the conclusion that mass euthanasia would be cheaper only in the short-term and only if kennelling is not required. “Mass sterilisation would be cheaper in the long run as it will prevent the births of up to 474 new dogs or cats over a two-year period, with only a single sterilisation,” she says. Nothing can move her. Her name, Society, a metal sculpture created by the skilled hands of artist Greg Birch, created to represent women’s rights. Greg, an artist from Penhill, Kuils River feels strongly about the relevance of educating women on their rights in this the period of 16 Days of Activism against the abuse of women and children. The burning issue of women abuse in society has inspired this artist to use his talents to draw attention to this destructive issue. A relaxed and free-thinking Greg shared his vision in creating this unique sculpture. “It always bugs me how you hear and see how women are abused. It’s always on my mind, rape, abuse, lesbian discrimination, exploitation of women in the corporate world.” The idea for creating a sculpture to portray a woman was born from these thoughts and Society started out with a bluegum stump Greg found while walking. This local artist who makes about 80 percent of his artworks from recyclable waste items, says Society took a year to complete. “The process takes a long time, a lot of thought goes into it, everything has a meaning.” Greg, a go-green activist explains a bit of the meaning behind the physical features of Society. “Her 8mm high-heels made from rumba wood, is representative of women’s shoe fetish. “The cellphone in her bag is that women have to stay connected, and how they have

Factory and building staff are usually also paid their wages during this time of the year, and because it is normal to adopt the festive moods associated with the season, one can easily lose focus and neglect personal security, all aspects well known to the common criminal.” Traut warns the public to be vigilant at all times, and to protect their hard-earned money by applying basic security measures. “Be alert when leaving a bank, and ensure that you are not followed by being aware of your surroundings,” he says. People participating in “stokvels” are encouraged to exercise caution when handling large sums, and to make additional security arrangements. Contact your local police station if you need any assistance with advice on how to protect yourself in this regard. The following hints could be useful when making cash withdrawals. At the ATM . Be alert and conscious of your surroundings when using the ATM. . Never give your card or PIN (Personal Identification Number) to anyone, for any reason. . ’n Groep vriende van Brackenfell, almal oud-inwoners van die Andrew Murray-kinderhuis in Wellington, het onlangs kragte saamgesnoer om die Kerswense van 160 kinders te bewaarheid. Om Kerstyd in die kinderhuis agter te bly terwyl ander kinders dalk huis toe gaan of by vakansieouers gaan kuier, is ’n bittere hartseer wat Morné Brand bygebly het. Maar tog het hy vriendskappe gesnoer wat ’n leeftyd sou hou en vandag is hy dankbaar vir wat die Andrew Murray-kinderhuis vir hom beteken het. “Afgesien van die hartseerdae, was daar ook baie goeie herinneringe. Noue bande is gesmee met vriende wat in dieselfde bootjie was. Vandag is ons almal suksesvol in die lewe, met gesinne, goeie werke en huise, iets wat dalk nie moontlik sou wees as dit nie vir dié kinderhuis was nie,” het hy die week aan TygerBurger vertel. Daarom het hy, sy verloofde El-

zaan Visser, en ses van sy kinderhuisvriende, besluit om terug te gee aan die huis wat hulle grootgemaak het, met ’n tweejaarlikse Kerspartytjie. “Ons het drie jaar gelede begin hiermee, maar het geen borge gehad nie en moes alles uit ons eie sak betaal. Maar vanjaar het ons groot gegaan met die hulp van Jack Postma van Cape Lube Equipment en Jacques en Elmarie Matthee van Greenfields Pub and Grill in Brackenfell, wat grootliks finansieel bygedra het,” sê hy. Met al die ekstra geld kon hulle behoorlik makietie hou met ’n waterglybaan, kulkunstenaar, Kersvader en Supersterre-held Burger le Roux wat vir hulle kom sing het. Volgens Elzaan is die partytjie vir agt maande beplan, maar alles het die moeite geloon. “Wat vir ons die belangrikste was, is dat ons al die kinders se wense kon waar maak en nog meer. “This has made me realise that even something that we take for granted, like walking, is a gift, and that we are not put on this earth to survive, but to live.” This is what David Koen, a 17-yearold Milnerton High School student had to say regarding the tumour which was removed from his brain just two weeks ago. “We are so lucky as a family to have our son alive and well with us for Christmas, and all our friends, family, and even the community have been so supportive. “I thank everyone who has kept us in their prayers,” said Gwen, David’s mother. The headaches and vomiting started a few months before the diagnosis, and at first the hospital picked it up as allergies combined with the stress of the family’s recent move to Cape Town from George. On Thursday 20 October, the symptoms came back, and the new diagnosis was that David might be lactose intolerant. Dairy was cut from his diet, but the problem returned the following day. After several blood tests, the problem could still not be determined. At this point a CT scan was recommended, and a 3cm tumour was found at the base of David’s skull. After the draining of the excess brain fluid, the headaches and vomiting had subsided, but at that stage the tumour was still believed to be in-

The issue now is the hospital fees which are in the hundreds of thousands. “My wife and I have decided to create a fund for David, because so many people have offered to help out financially. “The fund is completely transparent – one can view exactly where their money is going. We did this to show people that we are not abusing

their trust,” said Anton. There are also plans to use any excess money for children suffering the same condition or similar. David, a keen sportsman, said his illness has taught him many valuable lessons. “The fact that I have come through this without any lasting damage has strengthened my resolve to work hard and live life to the full,” said David. Pastiche soek windblasers Die jazz-groep Pastiche in Durbanville is op soek na windblasers om die groep uit te brei. Die groep bestaan uit ses talentvolle jazzmusikante – van wie twee musiekonderwysers, een ’n professionele musikus, ’n rekenaarprogrammeerder, ’n sielkundige en ’n ma met ’n pasgebore baba is. Die groep is in Mei vanjaar gestig onder leiding van dr. Anthony Costandius, ’n plaaslike voorligtingsielkundidge, wat die klawerbord bespeel. Pastiche het in Oktober ’n “Jazz in the Garden”-konsert in Durbanville gehou. Daar word beoog om in Februarie in Kaleidoscope, ’n bekende jazz-klub in Claremont, op te tree. Costandius is sedert die 1980’s bekend as komponis, verwerker, klawerbordspeler en koordirigent. Die ander lede is Werner Bonthuys (kitaar), Zinzi Johannes (stem- en akoestiese kitaar), Frans Bresler Slabber (kontrabas), Gemayel Kroukamp (tromme) en Loekie la Grange (trompet). Frans Slabber was as kind reeds versot op jazz en het in 1989 kontrabasles begin neem nadat hy Ray Brown saam met die Oscar Peterson-trio sien optree het. Gemayel Kroukamp, ’n musiekonderwy-

ser en multi-instrumentalis, het reeds opgetree in verskeie musiekblyspele asook saam met verskeie “big bands”, vername soliste en oorsese kunstenaars. Zinzi Johannes speel sedert sy 16 is ’n leidende rol in verskeie gospelgroepe. Na vier jaar voltydse musiekstudie in London, het Werner Bonthuys, ’n voormalige sagteware-ingenieur, hom in Durbanville gevestig. Hy gee tans kitaarlesse, tree in orkeste op en werk as sessiemusikant. Loekie la Grange is lank reeds ’n bekende in gerespekteerde vokale groepe. Hy het in die universiteitskoor van Stellenbosch gesing en daarna in kleiner ensembles soos “A few good men” en die Bellville-kamerkoor. Hul klankman is Gavin Cannone. Pastiche speel ’n mengsel van bekende jazz “standards”, jazz-funk en eie komposisies deur Costandius, Gemayel en Werner. Trompet-, tromboon-, alt- en tenoorsaksofoonspelers kan aansoek doen. Goeie bladleesvaardighede en ondervinding met ’n jazz-orkes of “big band”-ondervinding, asook ’n positiewe houding, is besliste vereistes. Haweloses saai chaos JANA BEKKER

’n Kaal dronk vrou, met slegs ’n deurtrekker aan, wat deur ’n park en in die verkeer oor Bill Bezuidenhoutrylaan hardloop, is een van die ongevraagde tonele wat inwoners van Blomtuin al moes aanskou. Jean Tallie, ’n inwoner, sê die bergies in die park voor die Blomtuin-woonstelle beroof hul van hul privaatheid. “Hulle was hul wasgoed hier, doen al hul persoonlike dinge, mors die wêreld vol en tel nie ’n ding op nie,” sê sy. Sy sê om jou huis se vensters of gordyne oop te maak is onmoontlik, want dan is elke bietjie privaatheid van inwoners daarmee heen.

Van die haweloses slaap in die park oor en verlig ook hul nood daar. “Party dae is die walms van die stank só erg dat inwoners nie hul vensters kan oopmaak nie,” sê Jean. Jean moes al een keer die polisie se hulp inroep, “want die lot het begin baklei en hulle was gedrink”. Sy sê die polisie het blitsvinnig gereageer, waaroor sy dankbaar is. “Dit is nie eintlik die polisie se taak nie – die wetstoepassingseenheid is veronderstel om in sulke gevalle op te tree,” sê sy. Jean sê sy woon al 10 jaar in dié gebied en in dié tyd was haweloses in die park maar altyd ’n probleem. By tye gaan dit beter, maar hoewel die haweloses soms vir ’n ruk lank wegbly, keer hulle altyd weer terug.

Dié karateouma skop nog hoog MARANA BRAND VAN HULSTEYN

Die 72-jarige Nellie Kleinsmidt het ’n lang en moeilike pad geloop om die “Ouma van karate in Afrika” te word. Dié pad van bykans 50 jaar was nie vol van die lewe se gewone struikelblokke nie. Dit was Nellie, wat in Elsiesrivier grootgeword het, se velkleur en haar geslag wat haar telkens teen ’n muur van onreg laat vashardloop het. Sy bly vandag in Goodwood en gee afrigting in Parow. Ondanks alles wat teen haar getel het, het Hanshi (“leermeester van leermeesters”) Nellie pas gegradeer tot 8ste Dan wat haar die hoogste gegradeerde vroulike karate-ka in Suid-Afrika maak. Vir sowat 30 jaar al, is afrigting, veral van kinders, haar voltydse werk. Sy het tot twee jaar gelede ook wyd en syd as skeidsregter opgetree en was die eerste swart skeidsregter in karate in Afrika. Nou help sy met die opleiding van skeidsregters in die Westelike Provinsie. Om tot op dié vlak in karate te vorder, het nie maklik gekom nie. Nellie het in 1965, toe sy 25 jaar oud was, met karate begin. Dit was terwyl sy ’n onderwyser by ’n kloosterskool was. Sy het by ’n karateskool in die Kaapse middestad begin oefen. Gou is dié skool gedreig dat die regering hulle sou toemaak as kleurlinge langer daar oefen. “Toe oefen die blankes en die kleurlinge maar op verskillende tye,” vertel Nellie, maar uiteindelik moes hulle tog skuif. Nogtans het sy haar eerste swart gordel in 1977 gekry. Haar velkleur was nie al wat haar vordering gekniehalter het nie. “Eers het die instrukteur ons (die vroue) ‘sagter’ behandel as vir die mans. Ek het vir hom gaan sê dis nonsens. As ons ’n manssport wil doen, moet ons dieselfde behandeling kry.” Die mans wat saam met hulle geoefen het, was nóg ’n bruggie om te kruis. “Die mans het gedink ons is ‘softies’. Hulle wou ons seermaak. Ek het vir die instrukteur gesê ons het nou genoeg gehad. Ek het toestemming gevra om hulle terug seer te maak. Ons karate-styl is semikontak. Toe het ons maar net ‘per ongeluk’ hulle in die, jy weet, ge-

Toe stop dit vinnig.” Haar lewensmaat, Johan Roux, het sy in die vroeg sewentigjare ontmoet toe sy by sy dojo (oefenlokaal) in Goodwood aangesluit het. Hulle het in 1978 ’n verhouding begin, iets wat lynreg met die destydse Ontugwet gebots het. Al moes hulle hul verhouding vir jare geheim hou, is hulle uiteindelik in 2000 getroud en is vandag nog gelukkig bymekaar. Weens wetgewing wat mense van kleur verbied het om Suid-Afrika in karate in die buiteland te verteenwoordig, het Nellie nooit haar Springbokkleure in karate verwerf nie. Teen die tyd dat die mure van apartheid geval het, was sy reeds in die skeidsregter-arena en was dit te laat vir nasionale kleure. Ongeag al hierdie onreg wat haar aangedoen is, is Hanshi Nellie steeds nie bitter nie. “Ek is baie gelukkig. Ek het alles in die sport bereik wat ek wou.” Sy sê die hoogtepunte in haar lewe, “was om my man te ontmoet, om ’n inspirerende ikoon te wees vir ander en dat Cameron Dugmore (Wes-Kaapse minister van sport en kulturele sake) my en my man in

2008 as Wes-Kaapse karate-legendes aangewys het”. Sy het ook geen planne om gou haar dojo waar sowat 60 kinders les kry, te verlaat nie. “Ek sal aanhou om karate te gee vir kinders. So lank ek nog kan rondruk, speel en spring, sal ek aanhou, seker tot ek 90 is!” Hanshi Nellie sit glad nie passief langs die kant en skree opdragte vir haar studente nie. “Ek skop en slaan sáám, anders doen niemand iets nie.” Dit is vir haar belangrik om net so vinnig soos haar studente te kan hardloop. Om fiks te bly en gesond te eet – sy is ’n vegetariër – is dus vir haar ononderhandelbaar. Twee dae van die week hardloop sy tussen 4-5 km. Twee

dae oefen sy so vir ’n uur lank karate en een dag doen sy strekoefeninge. “Ek oefen glad nie meer so hard soos voorheen nie. Ek moet maar afskaal soos ek ouer word.” Die kinders wat onder haar hande ’n totale lewensverandering ondergaan, is haar groot inspirasie om aan te hou.

“Hulle kry baie selfvertroue, hulle is gedissiplineerd en dit strek reg deur hul lewe, en hulle vaar ook goed op ander terreine. Karate leer jou om jou beste te doen, ongeag wat.” En juis dít het Hanshi Nellie ’n karatelegende gemaak.

Calling local charities to apply Almost R1,5 million rand has been raised for charity with the yearly Want ons Kan/’Cause we Can! concert, taking place for the 10th time next year. Safety at city’s level crossings still lags According to news reports, MEC Carlisle sees the verdict against Mr Humphreys as “a victor for justice and road safety”. Well it’s all good and well for the MEC to be happy about the verdict. Yes, we should be happy as a country that the NPA starts taking a firmer line against those who kill and maim on the roads and yes, Mr Humphreys was irresponsible. However, I am wondering when MEC Carlisle is going to act on his responsibility and see that the City Of Cape Town closes the level crossings where many other people were either injured or killed. Shortly after the accident on 25 August 2010 all newspapers crucified PRASA/Metrorail, and Lucky Montana in particular, saying that there are not enough warning signs to make motorists stop at these crossing. To my surprise in August this year Mr Carlisle very proudly informed members of the community and the parents of some of the kids present at a memorial service, that they plan on closing eight level crossings including the Buttskop one. In fact he did it on behalf of Mayor De Lille in her absence, as all eight crossings are in the boundaries of the City of Cape Town. What he did not tell people is that they are getting pressure from PRASA as it is their

responsibility to ensure there is enough visible warning signs at these crossings as the roads belong to the City of Cape Town. I am asking myself how many more people are going to get killed, either through their own irresponsibility or that of the irresponsible taxi drivers, before the City of Cape Town and Mr Carlisle are going to act. The City failed these families when they failed to take steps earlier to close the crossing. The plans to close Fredericks Street and redirect traffic could have been done long ago. How come they have the money now? Maybe next time someone gets killed or injured at any of these level crossings Mr Carlisle and the mayor of Cape Town should be sued. Maybe they will start planning better. I don’t even want to talk about the hundreds of commuters who were stranded that day and either got to work or school late or did not get to their destination at all due to that accident of August 25th and many others before that. Mr MEC now is the time for you to do the right thing and try and prevent more such fatal incidents. You also have a responsibility to ensure that we are safe on the roads. WILLIE VAN ROOI Email

Move airshow away from pets, and us I live in the Milnerton area and each year I watch helplessly as my dogs are affected by the airshow. It is not only the weekend of the airshow, but also the days of practise prior to the event that I watch my dogs confused and disorientated by the loud engines of the jets passing over. A dog’s hearing is much more sensitive than that of the human ear. Aside from the obvious safety hazard of

having the airshow in a residential area – all the animals in the surrounding areas take strain. How is this any different from fireworks? Surely someone has the authority to move the airshow outside of residential areas? Or does this person not live nearby enough to suffer the inconvenience? NADENE THABET Email

My response to the letter by Michelle titled “Give to those who need help” in TygerBurger of 14 December: Michelle’s thinking about giving to the neediest only applies to government services. If we see government assistance going to those with some resources while the poor are not helped, then I agree we should protest. But if an individual or private company chooses to give a Christmas wish to a certain person, then we should respect their decision. A gift is not earned nor is it a person’s right to receive. A gift can be given to someone who has much or who has little – that’s the beauty of a gift. There is no means test for giving, and no gift-police to judge its validity. If you apply Michelle’s logic to all giftgiving, then none of us may give to our friends before we have made sure that all the more needy people have been given gifts first. Giving cannot, and never has been, only to those who are worse off. Rather giving is all about the giver wanting to bless someone else. My second response to Michelle is that I know that hearing the words “special needs child” doesn’t explain much. I didn’t understand fully until my own child was born with special needs. I didn’t understand how frightening and overwhelming it can be. Nor how physically tiring it can be with years of interrupted sleep. Nor how emotionally draining it can be when specialists aren’t even sure how to help your child. I didn’t know that therapies were so expensive and are needed every week. I didn’t know how demoralising it is to clean up vomit five times a day or to know that your child has thoughts but cannot express himself. I don’t judge you for not understanding, because parents of children with special needs talk mostly about the triumphs this is how we survive. I encourage you to spend a morning with the child who was the recipient of the gift you wrote about. You’ll leave with a sense of having been part of something intensely difficult, but also something precious, and may even wish that you had some extra rands to give them too. JACQUI Email

Frame of mind for art ANDRÉ BAKKES

Ian Simons, the mindful artist, mind expanding philosopher and mind-blowing individual looks suspiciously at the voice recorder. “It is very difficult speaking to a mass audience ... ” With Simons the ellipsis comes in very handy. He takes his time when answering questions and his sentences often drift into incomprehensible mumbling. One nonetheless gets the impression that he has much more to say than what he lets on. “Sometimes I think things ... And then I disagree with myself ... ” He laughs shyly. The 48-year-old Van Riebeeckshof resident asks questions in his paintings, but as with the questions he asks of life, there seems to be no clear answer. Most of his majestic art is based on classical principles, but in the place of a flower or a book, the subject will now hold a gun. This theme comes up in several of his artworks, so the obvious question is: “What are you implying here?” Simons takes a few long seconds to get his ducks in row, so to speak, laughs and answers: “There’s obviously the anti ... the war kind ... there’s women with guns ... it’s the male fight, you know, the ... what’s going on in the world. Getting back to the heart, the feminine ... Why am I struggling to speak?” He giggles. “When I paint something I see an image, and I was looking through

Photo: André Bakkes this book and saw this classical subject and thought she needs a gun in her hand!” He continues by saying it’s the mind, or “the mind in separation” which causes people to live in disharmony and fear. One cannot help but think that Simons has something grand to share with the world, but getting him to reveal it is something of a challenge. It was this reporter’s view that a glass of red wine might release Simons from his recorderphobia, but another likelihood was that it might also have exacerbated his indecision.

“The darkness is unknown and evil arises out of the fear of darkness. Ignorance is apparently bliss,” he says before attending to the dogs and cats. “If your mind is ... Moses!” he calls his cat. “If your mind is ... Oh, I’ve lost my train of thought.” He stays quiet for several beats. “If you can control your thought, and not let your thoughts control you then you can be happy. If you think stressful thoughts then you create it. The mind creates guilt or fear. That is the illusion. The illusion of what’s going on!” Despite being highly analytical, Simons reckons “mental interference” gets in the way of his art. “I usually paint when I’m in a Zen place. I try to keep the ... My mind, I can ... Well, we can all quiet our minds and still use it as a tool ... Some identify too much with their own perceptions of themselves ... ” He giggles again. The interview lasted an hour and a half, but the sure truth buried just underneath the surface of Simons’ demeanour stayed hidden. Enlightened nuggets of society, art and the mind mixed almost flawlessly with his scattered frame of mind. He is a truly unique individual with streaks of genius, but understanding his viewpoint is very much like a game of “connect the dots”. Words are, however, not his forté. Parents are being warned against buying hookah pipes for their children. This warning comes from dedicated antidrug campaigner in the community Dhakir Christians who feels that parents are sometimes unaware of the dangers of smoking these water pipes also known as oka pipes. “In recent times the smoking of these pipes has become quite popular, especially among youth, and in many cases parents have been ignoring it because it seemed harmless,” he says. “The popularity of water pipes may be due in part to perceptions that they are safer than cigarettes. However, water pipe smoke contains nicotine, carbon monoxide, carcinogens and greater amounts of tar and heavy metals than cigarette smoke. “Research has found that those young adults who used water pipes were also more likely to use cigarettes, marijuana, illicit drugs and alcohol. “Experts have warned that smoking these devices for one hour is as harmful as smoking up to 200 cigarettes in the same amount of time.” Christians also pointed out that the passing around of the pipe in a communal environment can also increase chances of spreading illnesses such as tuberculosis. Another alarming fact is that some parents are allowing their young children, sometimes as young as six years to smoke from these pipes. “Parents must be aware that these pipes have the potential to lead to dependence on nicotine, and can cause cancer. “Smoke from a single hookah session contains approximately 36 times the tar, 1,7 times the nicotine, and 8,3 times the carbon monoxide as the smoke produced by one cigarette. “With these facts facing them I just hope that parents are aware of the dangers to themselves and their children,” he said.

Come ‘catch’ their EP at Rock the River LOUISA STEYL

Fresh off the stage at Synergy, Woodstock Mafia are gearing up to take on Rock the River. Not bad for a band that only played their first gig in April this year. The band is made up of Joe Theron on vocals, Nick van Rensburg on guitar, Ryan Matthews on bass and Owen Ingarfield on drums. They have been playing together since January. Ryan describes the band’s music as “post grunge rock ’n roll” with influences from bands such as Foo Fighters and Incubus. When they started playing together, they did so with a goal, one they have already achieved. “Playing Synergy was a goal for the band from the very beginning,” Ryan says. Woodstock Mafia played the LMG stage and despite the heat, the band

enjoyed a good turnout and positive responses. “We worked really hard to get there,” Ryan says, adding that they also brought their own quirks to the stage, like a coolerbox filled with beers that they threw out to the Synergy crowd. “When you have the opportunity to play a festival, people want to remember you for something,” Ryan says. He points out that festivals give the band a lot of exposure in a short space of time. As opposed to Synergy, Ryan says Rock the River will expose Woodstock Mafia to a younger audience. He says the band expected an older audience, but their fastest growing fan base is between the ages of 18 and 25. He believes that for a young band, in terms of playing experience, exposure is extremely important.

Woodstock Mafia – gearing up for big things in 2012. Woodstock Mafia recently recorded their EP, which is available to buy at their gigs, but just like beer, the band likes to throw these out at their shows too. “Come to the gig, you might catch one,” Ryan says. The band hopes to release their

single early next year, before recording a music video. “Doing a single is so important for a band,” Ryan says, adding: “It’s an opportunity to capture an audience before you tour.” Woodstock Mafia is planning to do that in May, when they head to

Johannesburg and Pretoria. Eventually they hope to be up there once every two to three months. Ryan says festivals are also a really good place to build strong working relationships with other bands. “The community is really strong,” he says. “As a band we take our rehearsals very seriously,” Ryan points out. The band practises twice a week. They even got their name from their rehearsal venue, in Woodstock: “Owen chirped Woodstock Mafia” and the name, which refers to a collective of people, stuck. Ryan says each time they get on stage, they give it their all, and they promise that Rock the River will be no different. It was my first international tournament and I didn’t know what to expect with 452 entrants coming from 39 countries. “My first fight was very close, but Shihan Hennie Bosman, who is my mentor, gave me a signal to use my legs and that turned the fight in my favour. His knowledge of the art and the way he sums up a fight has a calming effect on you when he is standing on the side of the mat. “Japan and Russia are two of the top countries in the world in Kyokushin-kan. Seeing how they fight and the intensity with which they do it, has a positive effect on you and motivates you to train even harder,” said Michelle. There are only three trophies in

the tournament. Michelle and the rest of her team were proud when she won the Will for Victory trophy after she narrowly lost in the final which would have made her world champion. “All of us are very proud of her. Michelle started doing karate seven years ago at the dojo and she has gone from strength to strength. “The focus and determination she showed against the best on the planet is a feather in the cap for South Africa. It was very satisfying to receive compliments from the Japanese on our progress and improved performances on the world stage. It really makes all the effort and countless hours of training worthwhile,” said Hennie Bosman. Michelle is currently busy with an instructor’s course conducted by Bosman. “I enjoy working with younger children starting in martial arts. It’s fun being assistant coach at Curro. It’s one of my passions working and seeing their progress,” she said. What makes Michelle an even more impressive individual is that she has also represented her country in chess and the performing arts.

Wimpie nou Trans Agulhaslegende So legendaries as wat die Trans Agulhas onder watersportgeesdriftiges is, net so legendaries is Wimpie Ackermann se naam in die Trans Agulhas-rubberbootwedvaart. Hierdie beskeie sportman van Bellville pak op 28 Desember op Plettenbergbaai sy 20ste Trans Agulhas aan. Met so ’n merkwaardige rekord sal hy beslis in die geskiedenisboeke van die Trans Agulhas opgeteken word, en ’n legende in eie reg wees. Dit kos elke greintjie krag, vasbyt en deursettingsvermoë om ’n suksesvol voltooide Trans Agulhas agter jou naam te skryf. Wimpie het dit nie net al een keer gedoen nie, maar negentien keer.

In verlede jaar se 2010/2011Trans Agulhas, was hy die eerste keer die algehele wenner in die moeilike wedren. Nie alleen het hierdie veelsydige sportman al elf keer op die wennerspodium gestaan nie, maar hy het ook al vyf keer nasionale kleure in die sport verwerf. Aan uittree word daar nog nie gedink nie. Hy kan die uitdaging van nog ’n Trans Agulhas net nie weerstaan nie. As al die silinders oop is en daardie bootjie sweef so oor die water, dan weet Wimpie Ackermann presies waarom hy elke jaar die Trans Agulhas aanpak. Wimpie gaan vanjaar weer in die P750 Blue Print-klas deelneem.

Off to NZ: Craig Johnston, 19, from Table View will represent the national action soccer team in New Zealand in March. He suc cessfully captained the u19 Western Province team to glory at the recent interprovincial tour nament held in Somerset West. He also coached the Table View u13 side to victory over Vasco with his friend Jermaine Lan geveldt.
