Residents in Summer Greens want to see the last round called on a pub that is trading in their midst. There have been many complaints about the Legends Pub that is situated in Summer Greens Drive. “The community has agreed that Legends Pub holds no social benefit to the community and is harmful to the long-term goal of ensuring a safe and secure Summer Greens,” says

Kurt Stanley, secretary of the Summer Greens Residents’ Association (SGRA). “The children of the community are placed at risk given the negative influence of having a pub situated in a residential community, as well as the negative elements which the pub attracts,” Stanley said of the establishment that is located less than 50m from a creche and pre-school. Stanley says the fact that the pub is open until the early hours of the morning attracts crime and other social ills to the area. “Evidence of this took place over

the weekend of 12 November when a vehicle was burnt out completely in front of the pub,” Stanley said. In an effort to close down the pub, the SGRA have requested that the Hadjidakis Group, which currently manages the commercial property on Summer Greens Drive, revoke the lease agreement they have with Legends Pub. Stanley said the group’s response to the SGRA’s letter claimed their concerns were unfounded. “We will now be starting up a petition and hope to get signatures of 70 percent of the homeowner resi-

dents to show the Hadjidakis group that this is a big problem.” Stanley said most of the foreignowned pub’s patrons are not local but from the surrounding areas such as Phoenix and Joe Slovo. Warrant Officer Daphne Dell from the Milnerton Police Station confirms they receive regular complaints about the pub. “We’ve had complaints that they are open later than their licence stipulates. The police regularly patrol the premises but we have found that they adhere to their licence regulations which stipulate it may

only sell liquor until 02:00,” Dell explains. She adds that there have also been complaints of people buying liquor inside the club and then standing outside the premises, drinking in the parking lot. “Their licence only allows for consumption on the premises. That issue has been addressed with the owner and we have not had any further problems in that regard for the last month or so,” Dell says. She says the car burning incident was not reported. . Meru says, adding that he recently attended a police forum meeting to stay abreast of any problems. Meru said they cash up at 01:30 and close the pub’s doors at 02:00. “If we didn’t do that we would have problems with the police.” He asked why the SGRA did not approach them directly with their concerns. “It seems there is a hidden issue here,” he says.

Murder suspect arrested While on patrol Abdurighiem Williams and Michael Mentoor received a call at around 02:00 on Saturday morning from a resident who had heard screaming from a unit of a block of flats in Loxton Road. “At the time, the patrol vehicle was a mere two blocks away and was quick to respond. Arriving at the premises, they heard clear shouts for help from inside,” said patrol coordinator Graig Pedersen. The two patrolmen had to break down the door to gain access to the flat to help the occupant. Inside they found a black man lying on the floor. “He appeared to have been stabbed numer-

ous times and a man armed with a knife was seen fleeing through a window of the property,” Pedersen said. Patrolman Mentoor immediately pursued the suspect as Williams called the police and attended to the seriously injured man. Mentoor managed to corner, disarm and arrest the suspect who was covered in blood, within minutes. Paramedics fought to stabilise the injured man but his injuries were too severe and he died on the scene. When police arrived on the scene they arrested the Zimbabwean man believed to be in his mid-30s and charged him with murder. He appeared in the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court on Monday. “The suspect is known as a hawker in the immediate area.” Pedersen said the quick thinking of the neighbourhood watch member to call the Crime Watch and the excellent work of the

patrolmen contributed to the successful arrest. The crime watch was also instrumental in the arrest of a young woman on Friday night. The patrol vehicle was called out to Dordrecht Street where a car had been broken into. “On arrival, the member pointed out a female suspect. The woman was stopped and found to have stolen property in her possession,” Pedersen said. The police were called and they arrested the woman. The Milnerton Crime Watch Trust is a non-profit organisation that was established by residents of Milnerton proper. Delighted with their Christmas presents A Christmas party hosted by a local charity organisation has warmed the hearts of many children in Du Noon. Beyond Education, a local non-profit organisation, hosted their annual Christmas party at Zusakhe Creche, Du Noon on Friday 25 November. “You often hear the phrase ‘the power of a simple gift’. “At Beyond Education we believe that through a simple, gift-filled box we can together make a huge difference in each of these children’s lives and bring smiles to their faces,” said the organisation’s founder Maria van der Westhuizen. “That is exactly what we did, together with the amazing generosity of our local business owners and the community of Table View, we gave over 190 gift boxes to the children from the Zusakhe Creche, their youth group, teachers, staff and home-based carers,” she added. “It was a happy fun-filled special day for all the children and staff of Zusakhe.” Van der Westhuizen thanked everyone who contributed to the gift boxes and who helped to make it a memorable day.

Farewell to legend of lifesaving LEON STEENKAMP

Members of the Big Bay Surf Lifesaving Club (BBSLC) this week mourned a legend with the passing of their oldest member. Laurie Brickhill, 73, passed away on Sunday afternoon after a yearlong battle with cancer. Brickhill was diagnosed with cancer of the oesophagus a year ago. “They had removed his oesophagus and he was doing well, with the cancer being in remission,” his wife Susan said on Monday. Six months ago Brickhill started complaining of stomach pain. Tests confirmed that not only was the cancer back, but was spreading fast. “He struggled especially these last three months but he fought to the end,” Susan said. The Brickhills moved to Bloubergstrand some 11 years ago. “Laurie took our granddaughter down to the lifesaving club to join and then joined himself at the age

of 63,” she says. Going to school at Kimberley Boys’ High, Brickhill was an outstanding swimmer, achieving his Springbok colours in the sport. It was thus no surprise when he fell in love with the ocean and lifesaving. “He was a master swimmer and the lifesaving club was his life. The younger lifeguards all looked up to him as a mentor and he loved and enjoyed the company of the ‘youngsters’, as he used to say,” Susan said. Peter O’Hanlon, chairman of the BBSLC said Brickhill was nothing less than a legend. “He was a fine lifeguard, committee member, participant and friend. He was a legendary figure. He would come down every day to the club and up to the end he was active and went out into the water.” He also praised Brickhill for his selfless manner and willingness to always get involved and to help improve and resolve issues. “He was often the voice of reason when emotions ran high. Laurie

was our man with the hat who enjoyed telling a story – with a twist in the tail,” he said. Although trying his utmost to stay involved with the club, Brickhill resigned as the club’s public relations officer a month ago. “We held a farewell party for him three weeks ago and we were grateful that we had the opportunity to say goodbye,” O’Hanlon said. Susan said although her husband had been in hospital undergoing tests that afternoon and struggled to stand up straight, he attended the party. “He stood up and he gave his speech,” she said. Vice-chairperson of the club, Colleen Saunders, also fondly remembers Brickhill. It was the 19-year-old Saunders who was the vice-captain of the lifeguard squad when the 63-yearold qualified with his Surf Proficiency Award. “He was an active lifeguard and competed in

the masters’ category for over 10 years and only stopped when his recent illness struck,” Saunders said, adding that he frequently did duty as a safety officer during nipper competitions. “He had a passion for just being in the ocean and loved the energy of the younger nippers and lifeguards. He will be fondly remembered for his wicked sense of humour and storytelling whether it was on the duty tower, around the bar for Friday night sundowners or in his weekly club newsletters,” she said. Brickhill was also a fierce campaigner for the beach and surrounding environment. “Laurie loved his beach and was concerned with its wellbeing. He spent many a duty weekend walk-

ing up and down the beach picking up litter and was very involved in trying to resolve the algae issue on Big Bay Beach.” Saunders confirms that Brickhill’s wisdom will be missed. “I will miss his wise advice that was always so well hidden in an anecdote that you only realised the advice he was giving you much later.” Brickhill is survived by his wife Susan, two daughters, a son, two stepdaughters and seven grandchildren. A memorial service will take place today at 12:00 at the St Chad’s Anglican Church, in Erica Road, Table View. Tomorrow afternoon the lifesaving club will have a wake at the club at sunset during which Brickhill’s ashes will be taken out to sea and scattered.

Xmas fairyland of lights LEON STEENKAMP

A Flamingo Vlei resident is again lighting up his house, transforming it into a Christmas wonderland for both young and old. It is the ninth year that Ray Chesters has decorated his house in a cascade of flowing, and pulsing light. An estimated 5 000 people visited Ray’s house in Sparrow Crescent last year and in the process he managed to raise R8 000 for local charity Home of Hope. “What really warmed our heart was that we counted 12 R100 notes. So the the people are giving,” Ray said, thanking everyone who made a contribution. This year the Home of Hope donations box will again be displayed along with a handful of additional lights and features. “I will be putting up the lights from Monday (5 December) depending on the weather.” As usual Father Christmas will also be visiting his house on 22 December at 20:00. “Last year we had about 500 people here, the line stretched all the way up the road,” Ray said with a big smile. “Our lounge was stacked with presents.” Children will also be able to drop their letters to Santa in a Santa’s Letterbox. “Last year we had a couple of children who desperately knocked at the gate asking to drop their letters before Santa came that evening,” he said with a twinkle in his eye. Ray’s annual light celebration warms the hearts of many children and also helps those who are less fortunate. “My neighbours are great and the local neighbourhood watch also helps a lot in managing the traffic,” he said. Parents who plan on bringing their children to see Father Christmas are asked to clearly mark the presents with their names to avoid confusion. Never too old to get excited by Santa LEON STEENKAMP

A group of volunteers treated the elderly residents of Huis Zonnekus to a Christmas party on Saturday. Some 50 residents enjoyed a host of delectable treats and some easy listening music as they eagerly awaited the arrival of Father Christmas. Some folks even managed a couple of steps on the dancefloor. Hosting the party was the Circle of Friends, a group of volunteers who aim to reach out to the local elderly community.

â&#x20AC;&#x153;Every year our group keeps growing because so many people value the elderly,â&#x20AC;? said one of the organisers, Clarissa Witten. â&#x20AC;&#x153;When you were in your youth you contributed to society and you still do, through your wisdom,â&#x20AC;? she added. Apart from a variety of cakes, biscuits and other treats, each resident was also given a gift by Santa Claus. Most residents eagerly accepted the gift as they confirmed with a twinkle in their eye that they were good boys and girls this past year. This happened about a month before the border police saved 24 puppies from being smuggled from the Western Cape into Angola in November, and today Geldenhuys, an avid animal lover and chairman of the Boland Falconry club, realises that his dogs could well have been stolen by a highly organised animal smuggling syndicate. “My dogs were like my children and it is hard to explain the void that has been left. Not knowing where they are or whether they are alive makes it all the worse, as one can’t find closure,” he told TygerBurger in a recent interview. With the municipality’s attitude I am not surprised that so many residents have little or no respect for municipal property. They don’t treat our property with any respect. For your information: The irrigation pipes were there because I was taking care of the municipality’s property, and have done so for the past 20 years. And this is how they thank me? How can they cut my irrigation pipes and leave their slabs on my lawn without even

informing me? They didn’t even inform the residents that they were creating a bicycle path. How about giving taxpayers a say in what our money is spent on? Cyclists don’t use the bicycle paths: creating an extra lane would have made much more sense. The traffic in Gie Road is bad enough without having to sit behind a bus. What more can we do to satisfy anti-dog anger? I would also like to put in my two cents on barking dogs (“Hondegeblaf kort strenger wetgewing”, TygerBurger 30 November) – and more so the barking neighbours who ensue. We live in the Boston area and have been subjected to the abuse of neighbours complaining about our dogs barking. We have two beautiful rescues, and like most people also have a job from 08:00 till 17:00. Our neighbours are home during the day, and have lodged complaints with the municipality, after sending us a very upsetting and rude, threatening letter, about not only our dogs but also our other neighbour’s dogs. What are we supposed to do when we are not at home? What do the complainers suggest? Should we simply not have animals so that it is more convenient for those who are home during the day? Should we remove our dogs’ vocal cords? Should we close off our house entirely from the street? And who will pay

for such changes? At what point can a consensus be reached that it is not the dogs who are the problem. Are we as homeowners not entitled to our rights to have animals? The neighbours who don’t have animals are very quick to stand on their right to a peaceful environment, so what about the rights of the dog owner? Our pups are exercised every day, and receive heaps of love and attention. They bark during the day – this is natural behaviour! When we are home we call them in when we hear them barking, they sleep inside, and have never barked during the night. We have even instructed our cleaning lady who comes twice a week to call them in when they bark. What more can we do? En dan is daar my gunstelinge: dis nou daai soort wat honde aanskaf sonder om uit te vind wat die honde se behoeftes ten opsigte van oefening, dissipline en aandag is (omdat hulle nie eintlik omgee nie), want hul enigste motivering is selfsug. Woefie moet my asseblief tog laat goed voel oor myself want my ma het my nie genoeg drukkies gegee nie en my pa was baie hard en afsydig, maar sodra die “oeaa”-stadium verby is, word hulle weggesmyt soos ou speelgoed of gereedskap. Domestic workers to get wage increase DESIREÉ RORKE

Domestic workers can look forward to an early Christmas this year, thanks to a recent increase in minimum wages by the department of labour. As of 1 December, the minimum rate for a domestic worker in Cape Town for the next three years will be R8.34 per hour, R375.19 per week and R1 625.70 per month. In cases where the domestic worker works for fewer than 27 hours per week, the minimum wage is R9.85 per hour, R265.95 per week and R1 152.32 per month. In smaller municipalities the minimum wage is R7.06 per hour, R317.62 per week and R1 376.25 per month. Although this eight percent increase somewhat helps to ease poverty, experts believe it is still a long way off from doing away with the current exploitation in this labour sector. “Even though the minimum wage has increased it is still ridiculous that these workers are paid so little. These rates should be seen as the absolute minimum to be paid and not as a general guideline,” said Bernard Reisner, an independent labour consultant in Cape Town. The minimum wage was laid down by labour minister Mildred Oliphant in terms of the Basic Conditions of Employment Act. According to Reisner this minimum will be enforced by labour inspectors. Reisner says that domestic workers across the city are paid anything from R4 000 per month to as little as R800 per month. “In suburbs such as Constantia I have come across domestic workers paid as much as R4 000, whereas in lower income areas, the wage is the bare minimum,” he said. A quick survey done in parts of the northern suburbs indicated an average wage between R110 and R150 per day, where domestic workers work only one or two days for a family. Where they are employed full-time the average wage is estimated around R2 500 to R3 000 per month, depending on whether they live in or not. Reisner has published a booklet, You and Your Domestic Worker and the New Laws, which explains everything you need to know pertaining to your rights and that of your domestic worker. Women reclaim self worth “Self worth comes from one thing – thinking that you are worthy.” This is a quote by author, Dr Wayne Dyer, but nobody knows this better than a woman who has had to reclaim her self worth. What started out as a fun project for Table View photographer, Coral-Leigh Stuart de Lange, has become a fundraiser for women empowerment, but more importantly, a tool to teach women to love themselves. Based on the concept of the movie, Calendar Girls, the Calendar Girls Project sees 12 local women – four of them from Table View – grace the pages of a 2012 calendar to raise funds for the Saartjie Baartman Centre. “What makes this calendar special though is that every woman featured is a normal, averaged sized woman who has learnt to love herself,” Stuart de Lange says. The Saartjie Baartman Centre for Women and Children (SBCWC) is a one-stop centre for abused women and children. Opened in 1999, the centre is the first of its kind in the country and with the help of surrounding organisations, offers management, treatment and prevention of women and child abuse. Abuse is something all of the calendar girls are familiar with. “Most of them have been exposed to either physical or emotional abuse and are using the calendar as a way to stand up and speak out against abuse,” Stuart de Lange says. “One of the longest lasting effects of abuse is a loss of self worth. The calendar hopes to show women that it doesn’t matter what size you are or where you come from, you are worth something. Our motto ‘Know your worth’ aims to empower each and every woman out there in taking back their self respect and dignity,” she says. The calendar will be launched with a glamorous vintage themed cocktail evening at The Pepper Club in Cape Town this coming Satur-

Magical walk among the birds ANDRÉ BAKKES

While walking through the surreal World of Birds Wildlife Sanctuary in Hout Bay it’s easy to become overwhelmed. There’s simply too much to experience. Admiring crazily colourful parrots, shoe-pecking crows and wingdragging turkeys alone can take up to two hours – and there are 400 different species there, ranging from birds to mammals and reptiles.

TygerBurger dropped by the biggest bird park in Africa to see if it’s worth the trip and entrance fee. The first of the 100 aviaries on the four hectare sanctuary was enough to make the trip worthwhile (it was filled with nature’s clowns – parrots). Animal enthusiast and park manager, Hendrik Louw, says with a smile: “We drive north to go visit wine farms, so they should drive out here to experience wildlife in the city.” He reasons one should make a

day trip out of it, because it takes “interested” visitors about three hours to walk through all the enclosures. Photographers should double that estimation and take extra batteries. Louw continues: “Where else can one picnic with flamingoes? Yet, one of our biggest attractions is the ‘monkey jungle’, which contains 27 monkeys. They are so trusting that a mother and her young will literally sit on your shoulder!” A huge number of animals have been injured in the “wild” and are now recuperating in the park, while others have been purchased or donated to add some variety. Louw says there was a time when they encouraged breeding, but now it’s solely up to the birds whether they “do it or not”. One particular story springs to his mind when asked if birds are intelligent: “A long time ago we tried to breed the goffin cockatoo, so we put two in each cage, which were then placed in a long row. But the next day all their enclosures were open. This happened for a few nights until we decided to ‘stake’ them out. We saw that once we had closed everything, one of the goffins would stick his foot out and open his latch, and then it would open everybody else’s!” This well-maintained and intimate park went through a difficult period in 2010 when the number of visitors declined by 20 000. At that stage it owed the bank and suppliers well over a million rand. Talks of possible closure were,

Library fun in holidays The Friends of the Milnerton Library will be hosting its last book sale of the year this Saturday (10 December) from 09:30 to 12:15. Christmas gifts/cards will also be on sale. All proceeds from the event will go towards the library and and help to extend and improve the library’s facilities, resources and services; and promote knowledge of the function, resources, services and needs of the library. The group is also urgently looking for donations of any books, magazines, CDs and DVDs. The library will also host various activities for children during the school holiday. On 12 December the young ones will be taught how to make gift wrap and christmas hats. On 13 December it is all about fun and children can enjoy a jumping castle, face painting and loads of games. The theme for 14 December is Wastewise and children will be shown how to make a Christmas tree. The final day of activities on 15 December will be an art session. Darren blows up historic storm GARY VAN DYK

A young trumpeter from Strandfontein has blown himself into the record books of UCT music school. Darren English has become the first student who has achieved a hundred percent mark for both of his honours recitals, something that has never been achieved in the history of the university. The first time that I heard Darren English play the trumpet, he was in Grade 9 at Muizenberg High, and after discovering that he had only been playing for six months, I realised that this was a unique talent in the making. Move forward to 2011 and those predictions have come true. This young man has grown into a seasoned musician on the local scene, playing at a range of gigs from those with his mentors guitarist Alvin Dyers and sax man Mark Fransman, to touring the globe as part of Jimmy Dludlu’s band, and performing with pop icon Loyiso at the Devo’s concert this year. He also features as soloist on Professor Mike Campbell’s new Big Band album, there’s also various shows at the Baxter but one of the most significant projects that he is working on is what he calls George. “This project is dedicated to my late grandfather, George Liederman, who always supported me, and it is a suite of works featuring a string quartet,” he says. He looks back at his achievements in disbelief.

“I really never expected that mark, especially not for my first recital, as we never had a single rehearsal,” he laughs. “I just told the musicians to come and play, and we had a swingin’ session. Same with my final recital, we just ran through the tunes roughly, and we just had fun, there’s no other way to put it.” During his second recital the young musician also got an idea to try something that has never been done in a serious recital, he played trumpet and flugelhorn simultaneously. “We played a McCoy Tyner composition called “Passion Dance” as

the last tune, and I never planned to play both instruments simultaneously, but I felt like trying something new that no one is doing, or at a recital of all places. “It was quite funny, as people didn’t know what they were seeing or hearing, having phrases sounding like two trumpet players playing at the same time. “The idea was originally a kind of joke, but it is slowly becoming something that people know me for doing. I actually got offered a few gigs just because of that,” he adds. Looking back at what started his love for the trumpet he remembers that it was love that his teacher

Fred Kuit had for the music. “I remember him asking if I’d like to play the trumpet and from there on I remained after school every single day just practising and practising. “Then Kuit introduced me to Miles Davis, and I honestly fell in love with the tone of his sound – that inspired me then and still does today.” Having “grown up” on the local scene at various jam sessions around town, he has also experienced that there are many young people who are being inspired to get into the music. “Just visit UCT and you will dis-

cover a generation of us young cats getting into this groove,” he says. “People are talking rubbish when they try to say we don’t like the music. There are many of us who are not fooled by the mediocrity that they try to sell us. “Fred Kuit has recently informed me that schools are starting jazz as a study subject as from next year. I really admire Kuit for his constant effort in trying for years to get jazz taught at schools as a subject. It’s finally happening, and I’m really happy about that.” After making history at UCT, the story will continue when he goes on to study his Master’s. “I received a full scholarship to do my Master’s Degree at Georgia State University in the USA, as from next year September for two years. “During these studies I will be mentored under the head of Jazz and trumpeter Gordon Vernick, studying both trumpet and drums. “Vernick heard me perform two years ago and offered me the scholarship, but I was not qualified for that degree at the time, so I can finally take him up on the offer. “I’m also grateful to God, to my family for their constant support and it’s always good knowing that my mother prays for me often, and my dad, is always watching as if he was on stage with me; it’s a great feeling.” Darren also got a distinction for his BMus Honours Degree and distinction for his thesis that he wrote on the life and music of the late saxophonist Nic Le Roux.

Touching lives via our website GARY VAN DYK

The TygerBurger website is reaching out to the world, and making a difference. Plans are under way for children in Blikkiesdorp in Delft to get a new playground in the new year, thanks to two young girls in Sydney Australia, wanting to make a difference. Sisters Chelsea, 9, and Charlotte, 5, Sandys-Silakivai, whose maternal grandparents are originally from South Africa, have become ambassadors for the project in Sydney to raise money for the playground. Lee Warren of the Blikkiesdorp 4 Hope project in the area was ecstatic when the story of their projects was carried on our website (TygerBurger, November 16). “We have seen the power of the world wide web, and Facebook working for positivity,” she said. “The children’s grandmother, Beryl Segers, got in touch with me after seeing the article and the next thing they were offering to assist us. “It seems like it is going to be a family affair because her cousin Janine Kelly from RL Architects, who designed the Green Point Park, will be designing the playground for our beautiful children of Blikkiesdorp,” she said. Segers is no stranger to maintaining ties with charities in her home town. She regularly invites entertainers from South Africa to perform at concerts in Australia to

When she was four she became the youngest child in Australia to receive a bravery award for coming to her mother’s rescue when she found her uncon-

scious on the floor at home. “She also became the Young Citizen of the Year and gets invited to Australia Day dinners by our local council and other events. “Along with her younger sister Charlotte they are ambassadors to raise funds for this project, and making people aware of how they can help with projects like this. “They are already actively involved in raising funds for a mother

and baby clinic in Bali. “When they saw the playground photos on the website, they were so moved and said we must help the children to have a beautiful playground. When they go to their favourite playgrounds they make suggestions as to what would be good and have come up with ideas based on their school playground, snakes and ladders, chess boards and hopscotch – all painted on the

concrete, and they want it for those children in Delft. “I still have strong roots in Cape Town so got in touch with my cousin from the architectural company, and they’re also helping. The Safely Home road safety plan for the festive season was recently launched by Western Cape ministers Dan Plato (community safety), Robin Carlisle (transport and public works), and Theuns Botha (health). The safety plan will aim to integrate the approach between the ministries, including roadblocks, management of public transport vehicles and speeding, number plate recognition, and available law enforcement personnel. “Together with all other law enforcement agencies we are bolstering resources to increase safety and combating reckless behaviour on

our roads. “Last weekend alone 12 fatalities were recorded in the province and we are leaving no stone unturned to prevent incidents from happening in the first place,” said Plato. “During this period all our law enforcement operations will be integrated with SAPS and our local traffic departments as well as other role players like SARS and home affairs. “Our integrated weekend alcohol operations will continue during this period and motorists can be assured that in this province they will be stopped and tested for driving under the influence.” . ‘Prank emergency calls are no joke’ MARANA BRAND VAN HULSTEYN

Seventy percent of all calls made to the City’s 107 Public Emergency Communication Centre (PECC) are prank or nuisance calls – mostly made by schoolchildren playing jokes. These shocking statistics came to light after TygerBurger enquired about the workload of the centre. During August, September and October this year, the centre handled about 30 000 calls per month. Of these roughly 20 000 each month were prank calls, John Ellis, PECC

manager, said. This is consistent with the same period in previous years. Unfortunately these calls can cause delays in the ability to answer other calls relating to life or property threatening situations, which could lead to resultant losses, Ellis explains. These figures do not include “hoax” calls where someone claims to have a critical situation and when emergency services arrive, it simply is not. For example, people say they are seriously hurt or in extreme danger while they are only suffering from a headache or

“heard something” in the back yard. According to JP Smith, the City’s mayoral committee member for safety and security, it can be assumed that these hoax calls are often made simply to get attention. “Sometimes people also call when they just need a ride to the hospital.” Most prank callers are schoolchildren. “The number of prank calls increases after school hours and over all school holidays. “Normally they just swear at the operator, are extremely rude or don’t say anything at all,” Smith

said. Ellis said in many instances the callers are children merely “playing” with the phone. He said it is unfortunate, however, that operators have to be subjected to “extremely unpleasant utterances and comments” from the prank callers. Smith said it is an offence to make a prank call to emergency services, but it is difficult to track down the perpetrators. According to Ellis, most of these nuisance calls are made from public phones and are short-lived. “While the exact location of these

phones is available on our systems, it is extremely difficult to catch the perpetrators.” Smith called on parents to educate their children about emergency services and their importance. “They should teach their children that it is wrong to make prank calls,” he said. . The PECC is a multidisciplinary emergency contact centre within the City of Cape Town’s safety and security directorate. The operator will gather the necessary information and ensure that the correct service provider or providers respond.

Make holidays safe and happy MARANA BRAND VAN HULSTEYN

After a long, rainy winter many of us look forward to returning to the outdoors for afternoon braais, picnics and lazing around the pool. An unfortunate fact is, however, that every year as temperatures increase, so do the number of poolside accidents. Drowning is the second leading cause of unintentional injury-related death among children ages one to 14 and the leading cause of death among children ages one to four. About 350 children under five drown in our pools each year. Another 2 600 children are treated in hospital emergency rooms each year for near-drowning incidents, and many suffer brain damage as a result. The sad fact of the matter is that the vast majority of these accidents happen in backyard pools, not the sea. While children also drown in buckets, ponds, dams, the sea, rivers and even in drains, the Child Accident Prevention Foundation of South Africa says the most likely cause of death for children under five in well-to-do homes is drowning in the family pool. And enough pools we South Africans have – almost a million, mainly in middle to upper income households. In most homes, there is no appliance, device or gadget that has the same potential for personal disaster than a swimming pool.

Never leave children unsupervised in swimming pools. To top it all, drowning usually occurs very quickly – under five minutes – and also very silently, often without any splashing or screaming. It not only happens when swimming; often kids fall into the pool fully clothed. Only 5cm of water is enough to cause drowning.

The key to preventing these tragedies is to have layers of protection, the experts say. Here are some tips to prevent drowning: 1. Supervision, supervision, supervision. A child should never swim alone. Always know where your children are. 2. Children should learn how to

swim as soon as possible. It’s equally important for them to be trained in survival skills such as floating and treading water, also with their clothes on, but this doesn’t mean that they can be left alone. 3. Swimming pools must be properly fenced off and have a childproof lock on the gate.

The gate must never be left open. Make sure there is nothing for your child to climb onto near the pool like pot plants or trees. 4. To protect a child fully, add a professionally installed pool safety net to cover your pool and check the net regularly. 5. Warn against boisterous play in or near water. A dam wall or the area around a swimming pool is no place for riding a bicycle. 6. Children should never dive or jump into water they are unfamiliar with. 7. Knowing first aid (CPR) can be a life saver. 8. Remember buoyancy aids such as inflatable wings, tubes, etc. are only aids. Don’t rely solely on their protection. 9. For above-ground pools, steps and ladders to the pool should be secured and locked, or removed when the pool is not in use. As far as the sea is concerned, constant supervision of children is necessary even in shallow water. The sea is unpredictable – a lilo or floating toy may easily be swept away – with your child on it. To allow a child in a boat or canoe without a lifejacket is asking for trouble. The same applies for fishing from the rocks. . Free water safety leaflets are available from Childsafe and Red Cross Children’s Hospital among others. MYCITI INTRODUCES THE SMARTCARD FARE SYSTEM. The City of Cape Town is introducing the myconnect card to provide commuters with a faster and more convenient way to use the MyCiTi public transport system. It’s the easiest way to pay for travel on the MyCiTi system – and can be used for low value retail transactions at merchants displaying the Mastercard PayPass™ or Mastercard Cash sign.

HOW TO USE THE CARD

The maximum amount of money that you can load at any one time onto the card is R1 500. You may not load more than R3 000 in total within a 30 day period. The maximum transaction amount is R200 per retail purchase.

MYCONNECT CARDS ARE NOW AVAILABLE

You will be issued with a card which has a default PIN of 1111. You will be prompted to select a PIN. Select a PIN you will remember, because without your PIN you cannot load money. In order to travel, you now need to load money onto the e-purse. Remember to keep your myconnect card safe as you would your cash. The card balance can be checked at the kiosk or when you validate at the station. Please inform the station conductor prior to tapping your card should you wish to check your balance. This is the ﬁrst step to converting MyCiTi from a paper ticket system to an electronic fare system. The myconnect card is now on sale, and paper tickets will continue to be sold until 20 January 2012. Both paper tickets and myconnect cards can be used until 27 January 2012. As of this date, only the myconnect card will be accepted to pay for travel on MyCiTi. The system formally goes live 10 December 2011. Loading money onto the e-purse of your myconnect card is as easy as buying pre-paid electricity: •

Get your myconnect card from the station kiosk now.

•

Load money onto the myconnect card’s e-purse.

•

Tap the card against this symbol on a validator. The correct fare will be deducted from the e-purse.

When the balance on the card is less than R20.00, the validator will give two loud “beeps” as a warning. Top-up the e-purse on your card as soon as possible. An unsuccessful transaction will be indicated with ﬁve beeps. If the validation is unsuccessful, you can use a paper ticket (until 27 Jan) or one of the emergency tickets issued with the card. If you do not have emergency tickets, you will need to leave the bus or station. Visit a kiosk as soon as possible to resolve the problem.

YOU CAN JOIN THE TRIAL

Commuters who are currently using the service at the Civic Centre and Table View stations are invited to participate in the trial that is running until 9 December 2011. You can use your myconnect card where validators are available during this trial period. Please be aware that different aspects of the service are being tested during this period. Some functionality, such as audible “beeps” may only be available from the ofﬁcial launch date of 10 December 2011.

Get your myconnect card now to avoid queues when paper tickets are no longer valid. These tickets will no longer be valid from the 28 January 2012. A card issuing fee of R22 is applicable from January 2012. An introductory issue fee of R20 is charged during December. Take advantage of this lower fee and get your card now. The myconnect card is an ABSA issued bank card and therefore bank fees of 2.5% of the value loaded are applied, with a minimum fee of R1.50 per amount of money loaded on the myconnect card. No other fees are charged when paying MyCiTi fares. We suggest that you load a minimum of R65 onto the e-purse, if you can. This will reduce the amount of bank fees payed. You will always pay R1.50 regardless of the amount, when you load money less than R60.

1. Board the bus and inform the conductor of the trip that you have selected, whether trunk (R10) or feeder route (R5) or Airport (R53).

Please note: Payment by myconnect card is also available for the MyCiTi airport service for adult passengers. Paper tickets are still applicable for children under the age of 11 or for ticket purchases for the airport service, that runs between Civice Centre station and Airport staion.

HOW TO GET YOUR MYCONNECT CARD

2. Your fare for the relevant route will be displayed on the screen, and you will be shown where and how to tap your card.

Step 1: Request a card, pay an issuing fee of R20 (this fee will increase to R22 on 1 January 2012). Keep your receipt in order to be able to return the card to the City for a refund of the original issue fee. Step 2: The kiosk attendant will place the card into their device and will ask you whether you wish to proceed. By pressing PROCEED you agree to the MyCiTi Rules which govern travel on the service. Step 3: If you proceed, you will be prompted to enter the default PIN (1111). Then enter your chosen personal PIN code, and enter it a second time. Please choose a PIN that you will remember. NB:If you forget your PIN you will not be able to top up your card in future. Step 4: You can now load value onto the e-purse on the card. Only payment in cash is accepted.

3. Tap your card on the validator.

NB: The fee for loading money onto the card is calculated as follows: A minimum fee of R1.50 will be charged for all amounts between R5.00 and R60.00. A 2.5% fee will be charged for all amounts greater than R60.00 (please refer to the fee table on this page). Step 5: Well done, you can now use your card.

4. Remove card and listen for a single or double beep, which indicates a successful validation.

Team does well in internationl tourney Get In The Ring is a big budget, K-1 ring style event, hosted once a year in Hamburg, Germany. Local martial arts instructor Anthony Kettle from Table View managed the team consisting of four fighters who took part in this event organised by Till Görres, from Thailholics Hamburg. The tournament was themed Cape Town vs Hamburg. Fighters Nicolas Radley (Thaiholics Cape Town and part of Team CCC), Pat Mafica and Mawande Vapi (Panther) and Sors Grobbler (Scorpions) were hand selected to compete against Europe’s best fighters, some with as many as 100 professional, international fights. Radley managed to win the intercontinental title after beating a very experienced Sammy Masa, who currently holds two world titles. Mafica and Grobler both narrowly missed out on victories on points. “We will be taking over a team once a year to compete in this event and fighters will be selected on merit,” Kettle said.

Historic win for Nippers:

Lifes aving Western Province held the first of the Nipper competitions for this season at Clifton beach on Sunday 27 November. The Nippers of the Big Bay Surf Lifesaving Club Nippers have for the past several ye ars always finished second to Fish Hoek. They turned the tables this past weekend however when they beat Fish Hoek. This is the first time in the club’s history that they have achieved top place in the pro vince. Ten clubs competed in the compe tition. The club will have open days for potential lifeguards between the age of eight and 13 (age on 31 September) on 11 and 18 December from 11:00 to 13:00. Winning a bronze medal at the Kurash World Championship in Uzbekistan is a great achievement in itself, but keep in mind this athlete was only introduced to this sport in June, making it even more spectacular. Andria Swanepoel, 19, from Melkbosstrand established herself on the world stage in less than a year. Kurash is one of the oldest forms of martial arts – basically like judo, but just upright jacket grappling. “It actually all started in June when I competed at the national Kurash championship in Somerset West. It was a bit nerve racking competing in the senior ranks. “I was picked to represent our country at the Worlds which was and still is a massive hon-

our for me. There were a lot of countries participating and the experience was second to none. “My first fight was against India which was not that big a deal. It felt good winning my first international fight, but my second and last fight against Mongolia was very tough. I lost the match but felt proud of my achievements. Mongolia is one of the better countries in the world in this sport,” said Andria as she reflected on her debut. Her goals are clearly set for the future. “I want to make the national Kurash team every year and become the best I can be. Secondly, I’m also going to concentrate on my judo. I think it will be the pinnacle of my sporting career to make it to the 2016 Olympic Games. “That is my aim and that is what I train for. It also helps that my friend David Colyn is doing well in this sport too and he helps me on technique and my training regime,”
