Can the battle against pet overpopulation be won? This is the question an independent filmmaker Riaan Hendricks is doing his utmost to unravel with the movie Wild Dog – a movie the NSPCA would rather not have see the light of day.

This film, which is still to be completed, is an eye-opener that turns the spotlight on the plight of hundreds of thousands of domesticated cats and dogs that are euthanised each year.

Especially now, over the festive season when these numbers increase significantly.

It is an observational documentary, which draws the viewer into the lives of the people struggling to stem the tide of unwanted animals and its impact on society.

The film focuses on and plays off at the Helderberg Animal Welfare kennels where approximately 140 animals are euthanised each month – a conservative estimate according to Julia Evans, general manager at the organisation.

This kennel serves only the Helderberg and surrounding area, and already cannot cope with the influx of unwanted animals. Sick animals or those with behaviour problems are put out first, to open up space for new animals coming in, and so the cycle continues.

“We absolutely hate euthanasia, but we are chock-a-block – our kennels, foster care and adoption systems. We are left with no choice,” she

According to Evans, the situation had reached crisis level years ago, and that something drastic needs to be done.

Evans supports this movie, and hopes that it will bring the necessary awareness.

Alarmingly, Evans and the Helderberg Animal Welfare, is the only organisation TygerBurger spoke to, willing to blow the lid off the euthanasia debacle.

Both the AACL (Animal Anti-Cruelty League) and the SPCA in Cape Town, have declined to make public the number of animals euthanised by them.

René Southwood, manager at the AACL, is of the opinion that these figures will make the public “angry” and that this kind of awareness won’t solve the problem either.

Also, Sarah Scarth from the SPCA in Cape Town wishes not to release their euthanasia statistics, but does confirm that the number of stray animals admitted over the past few months has increased.

“The numbers of strays admitted in November was up by 39 percent and this puts even more pressure on our kennels ... At this time of the year we also see the number of surrendered animals increase – animals handed over to our animal care centre by owners who no longer want them or can afford them.

Christine Kuch, spokesperson of the NSPCA (National Council of SPCAs), slammed Hendricks and the film, saying that this kind of publicity will turn the public to pro-life (no-kill shelters), resulting in the SPCA losing financial benefactors.

“We also question certain aspects of the film in legal terms,” she said, referring to Hendricks filming the animal inspector of Helderberg Animal

Welfare going to a house to pick up a sick dog.

According to Kuch, the inspector in the film must be qualified, and must have the magisterial authority to come onto the property to remove the animal and that a minor is not allowed to be interviewed.

Hendricks however confirmed that the girl in the film is 18 and that the particular animal owner contacted the Helderberg Animal Welfare and requested them to come and take their sick dog.

“We worry about the impression this movie will give the public. It undermines our message,” she said, and says Hendricks must be careful not to get himself prosecuted.

“The sad reality is that ‘any port in a storm’ is not an option. Finding someone to take an animal to avoid euthanising it, is irresponsible. Animal collectors are devious and many people are misguided when they take an animal, especially if they are told or have been led to believe that euthanasia might be imminent. This is emotional blackmail, impulse adopting and the long-term welfare of the animal is put at risk. It is inhumane to confine animals for long periods.

“Stress results and this may lead to behavioural problems which may never be overcome – rendering the animal even less likely to be ‘adoptable’ or to settle in a home,” the NSPCA’s standard policy on euthanasia reads.

Filmmaker Hendricks however disagrees with Kuch and still hopes that the NSPCA will support the movie.

“What makes the story moving and engaging is the compassion with which such emotional demanding work is done.”

‘Sterilisation is the only solution’ . From page 1.

Hendricks hopes that once the film has been completed it will be used countrywide by communities and animal welfare organisations to make the public aware of the crisis and the importance of sterilisation.

The fact that sterilisation is the only long-term solution is one thing all animal welfare organisations agree upon.

Also, according to Tamsin Nel, CEO of SA Mass Animal Sterilisation Trust, sterilisation is financially more viable.

Her research shows the cost of one female dog being sterilised coming to R431, compared with the cost of one rescued animal being euthanised coming to R572, after 10 days of kennelling.

She came to the conclusion that mass euthanasia would be cheaper only in the short-term and then only if kennelling is not required.

“Mass sterilisation would be cheaper in the long run as it will prevent the births of up to 474 new dogs or cats over a two-year period, with only a single sterilisation,” she says.

Arrests follow murder, theft A 41-year-old Nigerian national residing in Plumstead was arrested in connection with the murder of a 24-year-old Brooklyn resident on 12 December.

According to spokesperson for Maitland Police, Warrant Officer Siyabulela Vukubi, the circumstances around the murder are still under investigation.

“At approximately 06:00 police were called to attend to the murder scene at Kingston Court, Kings Road in Brooklyn. The victim was found lying in a pool of blood. He had one stab wound on the left side of the chest and was certified dead on the scene.”

Meanwhile, Maitland Police arrested three suspects on 12 December in connection with a business robbery.

They are suspected of belonging to a group consisting of seven suspects who allegedly robbed a business in Brooklyn. They also stabbed the victim three times in the back, but he is in a stable condition at home.

Cat has short­lived rescue ANDRÉ BAKKES

Even though Salty the cat’s last few hours were relatively comfortable, she has left this world with memories of deceit and abandonment.

Salty was euthanised last week Tuesday after she was rescued from the Salt River Canal in Paarden Island by the Cat Action Team (CAT) and Dave Barnack, who first spotted the distraught animal.

After she was rescued, the Paarden Island City Improvement District’s CAT volunteers, Brynie Victor and Patricia Tallant, gave Salty all their love and attention, but in the end they had no choice but to put her down.

“We took her to the Vet Clinic in Blaauwberg Road, Table View, and heard she had leukaemia,” says the compassionate Tallant.

The countdown to Salty’s death started when she contracted contagious cat leukaemia, but her last few days were particularly harrowing.

Salty was at some point in her life a feral (stray) cat, because her ear was clipped when CAT rescued her.

Her leg was also shaved, which suggests that her blood was tested by a vet recently.

According to Brynie and Patricia this most probably meant that someone “adopted” Salty and then she suspiciously ended up in the deep canal.

During high tide this canal is full of water, but when the caring folks found a wet and miserable Salty, it was low tide. That meant she was out of the water, but nonetheless trapped in the canal.

Cats die every day, but people like Victor and Tallant will never get used to it. Their devotion to animals in need is truly a rare occurrence.

TygerBurger listened intently as the two recounted their tale of salvation and eventual heartbreak.

“At about lunchtime on Tuesday a lady from next door told us that a person named Dave Barnack was trying to save a cat in the canal,” says Victor before adding that they thankfully have a net and a cage for these kinds of situations.

Says Tallant: “With the incoming tide destined to sweep her to a watery grave we rushed to the scene. We rescued the cat, which was in a terrible condition – exhausted and aggressive.”

The cat was visibly starved as well.

She continues: “Someone was looking after it because they took her to the vet.

“Animal welfare group African Tails from Woodstock responded to my email and they

The vet then discovered that Salty had leukaemia, which spreads among cats very quickly. The “dreadful” decision was made to euthanise Salty, and Tallant footed the R500 bill.

Both reckon that Salty was most likely thrown into the canal.

“I am an animal lover and abhor any cruelty towards these defenceless creatures. We domesticate them then we abuse them,” emphasises Tallant.

“The tears were flowing as I was holding her before she was put down. We were so glad after rescuing her and thought we will give her a wonderful life, so when she died it was soul destroying.”

Just talking about Salty is enough for Tallant’s eyes to fill with tears.

“If it wasn’t for Dave then Salty would have drowned, so thank you Dave,” concludes Victor.

“My husband was away in George, my son was at a rehearsal, and if my neighbours and ADT had not taken charge of the situation like they did, I would not have had the chance to celebrate Christmas with my family.”

This is what Michelle du Plessis, a Bothasig resident, had to say regarding the local unsung heroes of the Bothasig community.

On the evening of Wednesday 30 November, Michelle was packing groceries in her home when she tripped over one of her dogs and fell through her front window. Bleeding and dazed, she pressed all the panic buttons in the house and tried to wrap her bleeding arm up. At this point, Kayleen Skrush-matta, one of Michelle’s neighbours, was walking past and heard the noise of the alarm and the screaming.

“At first I thought it was a break-in, but then I realised that there was only one person in the house and that they were in trouble. I walked to the door and looked in, and there was Michelle trying to wrap up her arm, there was blood everywhere. I knew I had to act quickly so I wrapped her arm and started making calls,” said Kayleen.

After wrapping up the arm,

Kayleen saw another neighbour, Frank Vos, walking out of his house.

She called him over and he immediately went looking for a tie and made a tourniquet for Michelle’s arm.

Soon after, ADT’s Wayne Roux arrived at the scene and made sure that the emergency services were on their way, and then helped out Frank, who had been joined by Thabiet Adams, who was taking turns keeping the tourniquet tight.

“The hospital told me that had it not been for the efforts of these people, especially Kayleen, I would have either lost the arm or bled to death before the ambulance arrived,” said Michelle.

Deon du Plessis, Michelle’s husband, was very thankful to all those who helped.

“I was away on a business trip in George, and without the help of these people I would have lost my wife.

There are no words which can express my gratitude. People literally dropped whatever they were doing to help, and my sister even came by the house with her husband and cleaned up so that my son and I didn’t have to see all the blood.

“Wayne Roux consistently checks up, and this shows me that ADT and the local community have really gone the extra mile.”

Michelle du Plessis and her son Ashley, who thanks to the local heroes in the community, can celebrate the holidays with his mother.

Family gets ‘gift of life’ for Christmas “This has made me realise that even something that we take for granted, like walking, is a gift, and that we are not put on this earth to survive, but to live.”

This is what David Koen, a 17-year-old Milnerton High School student had to say regarding the tumour which was removed from his brain just two weeks ago.

“We are so lucky as a family to have our son alive and well with us for Christmas, and all our friends, family, and even the community have been so supportive. I thank everyone who has kept us in their prayers,” said Gwen, David’s mother.

The headaches and vomiting started a few months before the diagnosis, and at first the hospital picked it up as allergies combined with the stress of the family’s recent move to Cape Town from George. On Thursday 20 October, the symptoms came back, and the new diagnosis was that David might be lactose intolerant. Dairy was cut from his diet, but the problem returned the following day.

After several blood tests, the problem could still not be determined. At this point a CT scan was recommended, and a 3cm tumour was found at the base of David’s skull.

After the draining of the excess brain fluid, the headaches and vomiting had subsided, but the tumour was still believed to be inoperable. After more tests and viewing, a discovery was made; that the tumour could in fact be operated on, and that David had a good chance of making it.

“When we heard that David could be operated on, we knew that our prayers had been answered. He went into the operation and now here he is two weeks later, at home with his family where he belongs,” said Anton, David’s father.

The issue now is the hospital fees which are in the hundreds of thousands.

“My wife and I have decided to create a fund for David, because so many people have offered to help out financially. Cancer support group reaches out ANDRÉ BAKKES

“When one’s child gets cancer, it can become very lonely,” says Deirdre Taylor from the My Child Has Cancer Trust (MCHCT).

That is why a trust such as this is necessary, because it is there to provide support for parents of cancer sufferers.

MCHCT got together on Monday this week at Killarney Race Track to celebrate Christmas.

In some cases the whole family turned up, and it was clear from the onset that these parents are there for one another. Those who wanted to karaoke were kept busy with the microphone while children acquainted themselves with a jumping castle.

MCHCT was only officially registered in February this year, so they are still in the process of “getting their name out there”.

According to Taylor there are now 29 families in the trust and more will undoubtedly join next year. Some have even joined from faraway places such as Worcester.

Taylor, whose son is a cancer survivor, continues: “We understand what it was we needed during those difficult times, so we try to provide that to other families. We get together as need arises.”

She concludes by urging parents of those diagnosed with cancer to join their fledging support group.

Kids’ hospital welcomes cash The Lighthouse Project fundraising co-ordinators recently donated a whopping R124 702,84 to the Tygerberg Children’s Hospital Trust. This money will be used in the current restructuring and upgrading of the children’s hospital.

On Saturday 10 December Mel Roets of The Lighthouse Project presented the cheque to the Tygerberg Children’s Hospital Trust at the Pick n Pay centre in Table View.

This donation has brought the cumulative amount donated by The Lighthouse Project to the Tygerberg Children’s Hospital Trust, through their sustained endeavours since 2005, to the laudable milestone of R504 163,60!

Tygerberg Children’s Hospital is currently being restructured and upgraded from funds procured through the Tygerberg Children’s Hospital Trust.

This is to optimise the integrated delivery of the entire spectrum of specialist child healthcare to their almost exclusively indigent community.

The result of these developments

Eskom boost for Sunflower Fund The Department of Social and Economic Development of Eskom donated a sum of R659 664 to the Sunflower Fund, towards education and awareness of blood disorders such as leukaemia.

The Sunflower Fund is in dire need of funds in order to educate

and recruit a viable source of wellinformed bone marrow stem cell donors, who are ethnically diverse, in an effort to save lives of patients who are in need of transplants when suffering from lifethreatening blood disorders like leukaemia.

The older generation from Naughton Square Retirement Village donated teddy bears and blankets during TLC’s 16 Days of Activism programme. These gifts were distributed among children who have been emotionally or physically abused.

The children were ecstatic when they received gift packs at the Table View Police and TLC Outreach Christmas party.

TLC spreads Christmas cheer The non profit, welfare organisation named TLC Outreach Projects held several Christmas parties for various institutions during December.

This included the TLC annual Christmas by Candlelight event, a

fundraising auction at Pepenero, the Bambanani day at the Tygerberg Zoo and a Blush women’s tea event.

They also treated about 200 children in seven settlements during this period.

TLC is faced with a multitude of

challenges on a weekly basis as a result of human ignorance and neglect, but they believe that for every one of these problems there is a solution.

That is why the good people of TLC are working tirelessly to build a better society for all who live in

Dié karate­ouma skop nog hoog MARANA BRAND VAN HULSTEYN

Die 72-jarige Nellie Kleinsmidt het ’n lang en moeilike pad geloop om die “Ouma van karate in Afrika” te word.

Dié pad van bykans 50 jaar was nie vol van die lewe se gewone struikelblokke nie. Dit was Nellie, wat in Elsiesrivier grootgeword het, se velkleur en haar geslag wat haar telkens teen ’n muur van onreg laat vashardloop het.

Sy bly vandag in Goodwood en gee afrigting in Parow. Ondanks alles wat teen haar getel het, het Hanshi (“leermeester van leermeesters”) Nellie pas gegradeer tot 8ste Dan wat haar die hoogste gegradeerde vroulike karate-ka in Suid-Afrika maak.

Vir sowat 30 jaar al, is afrigting, veral van kinders, haar voltydse werk. Sy het tot twee jaar gelede ook wyd en syd as skeidsregter opgetree en was die eerste swart skeidsregter in karate in Afrika. Nou help sy met die opleiding van skeidsregters in die Westelike Provinsie.

Om tot op dié vlak in karate te vorder, het nie maklik gekom nie. Nellie het in 1965, toe sy 25 jaar oud was, met karate begin. Dit was terwyl sy ’n onderwyser by ’n kloosterskool was.

Sy het by ’n karateskool in die Kaapse middestad begin oefen. Gou is dié skool gedreig dat die regering hulle sou toemaak as kleurlinge langer daar oefen. “Toe oefen die blankes en die kleurlinge maar op verskillende tye,” vertel Nellie, maar uiteindelik moes hulle tog skuif. Nogtans het sy haar eerste swart gordel in 1977 gekry.

Haar velkleur was nie al wat haar vordering gekniehalter het nie. “Eers het die instrukteur ons (die vroue) ‘sagter’ behandel as vir die mans. Ek het vir hom gaan sê dis nonsens. As ons ’n manssport wil doen, moet ons dieselfde behandeling kry.”

Die mans wat saam met hulle geoefen het, was nóg ’n bruggie om te kruis. “Die mans

het gedink ons is ‘softies’. Hulle wou ons seermaak. Ek het vir die instrukteur gesê ons het nou genoeg gehad. Ek het toestemming gevra om hulle terug seer te maak. Ons karate-styl is semi-kontak. Toe het ons maar net ‘per ongeluk’ hulle in die, jy weet, geskop. Toe stop dit vinnig.”

Haar lewensmaat, Johan Roux, het sy in die vroeg sewentigjare ontmoet toe sy by sy dojo (oefenlokaal) in Goodwood aangesluit het. Hulle het in 1978 ’n verhouding begin, iets wat lynreg met die destydse Ontugwet gebots het. Al moes hulle hul verhouding vir jare geheim hou, is hulle uiteindelik in 2000 getroud en is vandag nog gelukkig bymekaar.

Weens wetgewing wat mense van kleur verbied het om Suid-Afrika in karate in die buiteland te verteenwoordig, het Nellie nooit haar Springbokkleure in karate verwerf nie. Teen die tyd dat die mure van apartheid geval het, was sy reeds in die skeidsregter-arena en was dit te laat vir nasionale kleure.

Sy sê die hoogtepunte in haar lewe, “was om my man te ontmoet, om ’n inspirerende ikoon te wees vir ander en dat Cameron Dugmore (Wes-Kaapse minister van sport en kulturele sake) my en my man in 2008 as Wes-Kaapse karate-legendes aangewys het”.

Sy het ook geen planne om gou haar dojo waar sowat 60 kinders les kry, te verlaat nie.

“Ek sal aanhou om karate te gee vir kinders.

So lank ek nog kan rondruk, speel en spring, sal ek aanhou, seker tot ek 90 is!” Twee dae van die week hardloop sy tussen 4-5 km.

Twee dae oefen sy so vir ’n uur lank karate en een dag doen sy strekoefeninge.

Die kinders wat onder haar hande ’n totale lewensverandering ondergaan, is haar groot inspirasie om aan te hou. “Hulle kry baie selfvertroue, hulle is gedissiplineerd en dit strek reg deur hul lewe, en hulle vaar ook goed op ander terreine. Karate leer jou om jou beste te doen, ongeag wat.” En juis dít het Hanshi Nellie ’n karatelegende gemaak.

When I wrote the previous letter (“Not worth plastic!”, TygerBurger 14 December) I obviously knew only part of the sad story.

From other letters and the now publicised “smart card fare system”, I get the whole picture of this latest money-making scam at the expense of the public using this fancy transport system.

A person travelling daily from Table View to town or Paarden Eiland currently pays approximately R100 a week, but according to the MyCiTi website, can get a 20 percent discount when purchasing 20 tickets or more.

Until end January!

However, from end January there is no mention of a discount with the “smart card”, in fact, the more one uses it, the more banking fees one pays. It’s indeed a smart moneymaking scam between the City and Absa, and must be the first in the world where the people using public transport subsidise a bank. It’s just preposterous.

I wonder how that fits in with the often stated promises to make public transport more affordable to the poorest? The way I add things up, the more one depends on this system, the more disadvantaged one is, the more Absa earns from those who can least

afford it. And what about all the other planned lines, promised by our mayor, to such places like Mitchells Plain and Khayelitsha? Those poor suckers will have to pay through their noses for the “privilege” to use this prestigious bus system. How much lower can the powers that be sink?

But, here my recommendations: 1. Scrap that plastic “ticket” scam; 2. Issue proper paper tickets, which can be read by people, not just the fancy electronic machines; 3. Issue tickets for multiple rides, weekly and monthly tickets, family tickets, off-peak and seniors’ tickets at varying discounts; 4. All these should also be freely usable at the other bus services (Golden Arrow, etc.), as well as the suburban train service; 5. With paper tickets we could very soon get to use a properly integrated public transport system, even without the “taxis”, which is certainly realisable much quicker, and a lot cheaper, than waiting for more “MyCiTi” routes to be built.

So, once again, from my side, no “proper” ticket, definitely no using MyCiTi! PETER SMULIK Email

Airshow a strain for dogs I live in the Milnerton area and each year I watch helplessly as my dogs are affected by the airshow. It is not only the weekend of the airshow, but also the days of practise prior to the event that I watch my dogs confused and disorientated by the loud engines of the jets passing over. A dog’s hearing is much more sensitive than that of the human ear.

Aside from the obvious safety hazard of having the airshow in a residential area – all

the animals in the surrounding areas take strain. How is this any different from fireworks?

Surely someone has the authority to move the airshow outside of residential areas? Or does this person not live nearby enough to suffer the inconvenience and discomfort that goes with this event?

My response to the letter by Michelle titled “Give to those who need help” in TygerBurger of 14 December: Michelle’s thinking about giving to the neediest only applies to government services. If an individual or private company chooses to give a Christmas wish to a certain person, then we should respect their decision. A gift is not earned nor is it a person’s right to receive. A gift can be given to someone who has much or who has little – that’s the beauty of a gift.

If you apply Michelle’s logic to all giftgiving, then none of us may give to our friends before we have made sure that all the more needy people have been given gifts first. Giving cannot, and never has been, only to those who are worse off.

Rather giving is all about the giver wanting to bless someone else.

My second response to Michelle is that I know that hearing the words “special needs child” doesn’t explain much. I didn’t understand fully until my own child was born with special needs. I didn’t understand how frightening and overwhelming it can be. Nor how physically tiring it can be with years of interrupted sleep. Nor how emotionally draining it can be when specialists aren’t even sure how to help your child. I didn’t know that therapies were so expensive and are needed every week.

I didn’t know how demoralising it is to clean up vomit five times a day or to know that your child has thoughts but cannot express himself.

I don’t judge you for not understanding, because parents of children with special needs talk mostly about the triumphs this is how we survive.

Come ‘catch’ their EP at Rock the River LOUISA STEYL

Fresh off the stage at Synergy, Woodstock Mafia are gearing up to take on Rock the River. Not bad for a band that only played their first gig in April this year.

The band is made up of Joe Theron on vocals, Nick van Rensburg on guitar, Ryan Matthews on bass and Owen Ingarfield on drums.

They have been playing together since January.

Ryan describes the band’s music as “post grunge rock ’n roll” with influences from bands such as Foo Fighters and Incubus.

When they started playing together, they did so with a goal, one they have already achieved.

“Playing Synergy was a goal for the band from the very beginning,” Ryan says.

Woodstock Mafia played the LMG stage and despite the heat, the band

enjoyed a good turnout and positive responses.

“We worked really hard to get there,” Ryan says, adding that they also brought their own quirks to the stage, like a coolerbox filled with beers that they threw out to the Synergy crowd.

“When you have the opportunity to play a festival, people want to remember you for something,” Ryan says.

He points out that festivals give the band a lot of exposure in a short space of time.

As opposed to Synergy, Ryan says Rock the River will expose Woodstock Mafia to a younger audience.

He says the band expected an older audience, but their fastest growing fan base is between the ages of 18 and 25.

He believes that for a young band, in terms of playing experience, exposure is extremely important.

Woodstock Mafia recently recorded their EP, which is available to buy at their gigs, but just like beer, the band likes to throw these out at their shows too.

“Come to the gig, you might catch one,” Ryan says.

The band hopes to release their

single early next year, before recording a music video.

“Doing a single is so important for a band,” Ryan says, adding: “It’s an opportunity to capture an audience before you tour.”

Woodstock Mafia is planning to do that in May, when they head to

Johannesburg and Pretoria.

Eventually they hope to be up there once every two to three months.

Ryan says festivals are also a really good place to build strong working relationships with other bands.

“The community is really strong,” he says.

“As a band we take our rehearsals very seriously,” Ryan points out. The band practises twice a week.

They even got their name from their rehearsal venue, in Woodstock: “Owen chirped Woodstock Mafia” and the name, which refers to a collective of people, stuck.

Ryan says each time they get on stage, they give it their all, and they promise that Rock the River will be no different.

At the tender age of 15, Michelle Joubert (Curro) has just returned from Moscow with a silver medal after competing in her first-ever Kyokushin-kan World Junior Championship.

Swollen feet and bruises are all part of the game, but the medal and status received surpass any pain.

“I was very nervous about the championship. It was my first international tournament and I didn’t know what to expect with 452 entrants coming from 39 countries.

“My first fight was very close, but Shihan Hennie Bosman, who is my mentor, gave me a signal to use my legs and that turned the fight in my favour. His knowledge of the art and the way he sums up a fight has a calming effect on you when he is standing on the side of the mat.

“Japan and Russia are two of the top countries in the world in Kyokushin-kan. Seeing how they fight and the intensity with which they do it, has a positive effect on you and motivates you to train even harder,” said Michelle.

There are only three trophies in

the tournament. Michelle and the rest of her team were proud when she won the Will for Victory trophy after she narrowly lost in the final which would have made her world champion.

“All of us are very proud of her.

Michelle started doing karate seven years ago at the dojo and she has gone from strength to strength.

“The focus and determination she showed against the best on the planet is a feather in the cap for South Africa. It was very satisfying to receive compliments from the Japanese on our progress and improved performances on the world stage. It really makes all the effort and countless hours of training worthwhile,” said Hennie Bosman.

Michelle is currently busy with an instructor’s course conducted by Bosman. “I enjoy working with younger children starting in martial arts. It’s fun being assistant coach at Curro. It’s one of my passions working and seeing their progress,” she said.

What makes Michelle an even more impressive individual is that she has also represented her country in chess and the performing arts.

Dit kos elke greintjie krag, vasbyt en deursettingsvermoë om ’n suksesvol voltooide Trans Agulhas agter jou naam te skryf.

Wimpie het dit nie net al een keer gedoen nie, maar negentien keer.

In verlede jaar se 2010/2011Trans Agulhas, was hy die eerste keer die algehele wenner in die moeilike wedren. Nie alleen het hierdie veelsydige sportman al elf keer op die wennerspodium gestaan nie, maar hy het ook al vyf keer nasionale kleure in die sport verwerf.

Aan uittree word daar nog nie gedink nie. Hy kan die uitdaging van nog ’n Trans Agulhas net nie weerstaan nie. As al die silinders oop is en daardie bootjie sweef so oor die water, dan weet Wimpie Ackermann presies waarom hy elke jaar die Trans Agulhas aanpak.

Wimpie gaan vanjaar weer in die P750 Blue Print-klas deelneem.
