Belhamels regeer nog MARANA BRAND VAN HULSTEYN

Dis steeds het einde niet. Ná jare se ernstige probleme in Parowpark, die 21 munisipale woonstelblokke op die hoek van Frans Conradie en Giel Basson, lyk dit of die oplossings steeds buite sig is. Dié 421 woonstelle wat eens ’n baie netjiese, maar goedkoper behuisingsalternatief was, het die afgelope jare berug geword. Dié reputasie is nie onverdiend nie. Onwettige immigrante, onwettige bewoning, dwelmhandel en -misbruik, prostitusie, vandalisme en diefstal is maar ’n paar van die gereelde misdade op die terrein. Rommelstrooiing, ’n gevloek, ’n geraas, algemene disrespek, nie-betaling van rekeninge, min sekuriteit en swak onderhoud en skoonmaak van die terrein, laat die lys net langer word. Pogings om die situasie om te keer, het die afgelope jare jammerlik gefaal. Die nuwe voorsitter van die Tygerberg-subraad, Clive Justus, het op ’n subraadvergadering in September hernude pogings om dié tameletjie gekou te kry, aangekondig. In hierdie stadium is die situasie nog nie veel beter nie. Inwoners bel steeds die TygerBurger met klagtes van veral ’n geskree, geskel en geraas wat dag en nag aanhou. Inwoners wat hulle by die reëls probeer hou, word klaarblyklik geïntimideer deur belhamels wat hulle selfs met geweld dreig. Hulle het al moed opgegee oor al die ander ongerymdhede. By navraag, het Ernest Sonnenberg, burgemeesterskomiteelid vir menslike nedersettings, gereageer op Justus se versoeke wat destyds aan hom deurgegee is. ’n Opname sou onder die inwoners van Parow-park gedoen word om onder meer te bepaal of daar onwettige inwoners is. Sonnenberg het hierop gesê ’n tender “is in die proses om saamgestel te word om ’n diensverskaffer aan te stel om ’n opname by alle huureenhede van die Stad, insluitend Parow-park, te doen”. Hy sê die

tender is reeds geadverteer en die sluitingsdatum is 10 Januarie 2012. Daar is gevra dat “anti-sosiale gedrag” by die woonstelle gemonitor word. Sonnenberg sê klagtes hieroor word ingevolge die Stad se beleid oor anti-sosiale gedrag hanteer. “Inwoners moet die polisie kontak wanneer daar kriminele aktiwiteite voorkom. Hulle moet ook die behuisingskantoor inlig om te verseker dat die nodige aksie geneem word,” het Sonnenberg voorgestel. Justus se versoek dat aandag aan die hekke en heinings van Parow-park gegee moet word, gaan duidelik nie gou aandag kry nie. “Die oprigting van hekke en heinings word oorweeg, maar die nodige fondse moet vir hierdie projek verkry word,” het Sonnenberg gesê. Inwoners se behoefte aan meer sekuriteit, sal volgens hom deur dié heinings aangespreek word. Dieselfde lot geld die onderhoud van die woonstelle en die terrein, sowel as die installering van vooraf-betaalde elektrisiteits- én watermeters. Dit sou juis installeer word om die swak betaling van water en elektrisiteit aan bande te lê. “Herstel en onderhoudswerk aan al die Stad se huureenhede, insluitend Parow-park, word deur die Stad se behuisings-onderhoudseenheid uitgevoer. Dit het ’n beperkte begroting,” het Sonnenberg aangedui. Ook die installering van die meters, “is gekoppel aan die goedkeuring van subsidies vir behoeftiges”. Hy sê ’n woonstelkomitee, wat deur Justus aanbeveel is om ’n vinger op die pols te hou, is wel intussen gestig. “Die laaste vergadering met amptenare van die departement van bestaande nedersettings is op 28 November gehou. Die voorsitter is Annalie du Toit.” ’n Vergadering met inwoners, soos voorgestel, is nog nie gehou nie, maar gaan glo in die nuwe jaar gehou word, het Sonnenberg onderneem. Dié karateouma skop nog hoog MARANA BRAND VAN HULSTEYN

Die 72-jarige Nellie Kleinsmidt het ’n lang en moeilike pad geloop om die “Ouma van karate in Afrika” te word. Dié pad van bykans 50 jaar was nie vol van die lewe se gewone struikelblokke nie. Dit was Nellie, wat in Elsiesrivier grootgeword het, se velkleur en haar geslag wat haar telkens teen ’n muur van onreg laat vashardloop het. Sy bly vandag in Goodwood en gee afrigting in Parow. Ondanks alles wat teen haar getel het, het Hanshi (“leermeester van leermeesters”) Nellie pas gegradeer tot 8ste Dan wat haar die hoogste gegradeerde vroulike karate-ka in Suid-Afrika maak. Vir sowat 30 jaar al, is afrigting, veral van kinders, haar voltydse werk. Sy het tot twee jaar gelede ook wyd en syd as skeidsregter opgetree en was die eerste swart skeidsregter in karate in Afrika. Nou help sy met die opleiding van skeidsregters in die Westelike Provinsie. Om tot op dié vlak in karate te vorder, het nie maklik gekom nie. Nellie het in 1965, toe sy 25 jaar oud was, met karate begin. Dit was terwyl sy ’n onderwyser by ’n kloosterskool was. Sy het by ’n karateskool in die Kaapse middestad begin oefen. Gou is dié skool gedreig dat die regering hulle sou toemaak as kleurlinge langer daar oefen. “Toe oefen die blankes en die kleurlinge maar op verskillende tye,” vertel Nellie, maar uiteindelik moes hulle tog skuif. Nogtans het sy haar eerste swart gordel in 1977 gekry. Haar velkleur was nie al wat haar vordering gekniehalter het nie. “Eers het die instrukteur ons (die vroue) ‘sagter’ behandel as vir die mans. Ek het vir hom gaan sê dis nonsens. As ons ’n manssport wil doen, moet ons dieselfde behandeling kry.” Die mans wat saam met hulle geoefen het, was nóg ’n bruggie om te kruis. “Die mans het gedink ons is ‘softies’. Hulle wou ons seermaak. Ek het vir die instrukteur gesê ons het nou genoeg gehad. Ek het toestemming gevra om hulle terug seer te maak. Ons karate-styl is semikontak. Toe het ons maar net ‘per ongeluk’ hulle in die, jy weet, geskop. Toe stop dit vinnig.” Haar lewensmaat, Johan Roux, het sy in die vroeg sewentigjare ontmoet toe sy by sy dojo (oefenlokaal) in Goodwood aangesluit het. Hulle het in 1978 ’n verhouding begin, iets wat lynreg met die destydse Ontugwet gebots het. Al moes hulle hul verhouding vir jare geheim hou, is

Weens wetgewing wat mense van kleur verbied het om Suid-Afrika in karate in die buiteland te verteenwoordig, het Nellie nooit haar Springbokkleure in karate verwerf nie. Teen die tyd dat die mure van apartheid geval het, was sy reeds in die skeidsregter-arena en was dit te laat vir nasionale kleure. Ongeag al hierdie onreg wat haar aangedoen is, is Hanshi Nellie steeds nie bitter nie. “Ek is baie gelukkig. Ek het alles in die sport bereik wat ek wou.” Sy sê die hoogtepunte in haar lewe, “was om my man te ontmoet, om ’n inspirerende ikoon te wees vir ander en dat Cameron Dugmore (Wes-Kaapse minister van sport en kulturele sake) my en my man in 2008 as Wes-Kaapse karate-legendes aangewys het”. Sy het ook geen planne om gou haar dojo waar sowat 60 kinders les kry, te verlaat nie. “Ek sal aanhou om karate te gee vir kinders. So lank ek nog kan rondruk, speel en spring, sal ek aanhou, seker tot ek 90 is!” Hanshi Nellie sit glad nie passief langs die kant en skree opdragte vir haar studente nie. “Ek skop en slaan sáám, anders doen niemand iets nie.” Dit is vir haar belangrik om net so vinnig soos haar studente te kan hardloop. Om fiks te bly en gesond te eet – sy is ’n vegetariër – is dus vir haar ononderhandelbaar. Twee

Velodrome not open to clubs JANA BEKKER

Sport clubs in Bellville, especially athletics and cycling, are extremely concerned over their future, as they will not be able to train at the Velodrome during its development over the coming years. A meeting to weigh up options and find a workable solution to accommodate athletics clubs and school athletics when the Bellville Velodrome will be developed from next year, was held at the stadium last week. A business and retail park, hotel, conference centre and residential units will be erected at the Velodrome in a R3 billion project. Alexander Dykes, District Six Manager of the City of Cape Town, said those attending the meeting will form a working group, with the purpose of finding alternative accommodation for athletic fixtures and practises when the stadium closes in 2012. TygerBurger reported on clubs’ concerns over having no alternative in August this year (“Geriewe bedreig – Sportklubs oor nuwe ontwikkeling”).

Alternative space is also necessary for the cycling club, as well as storage space for athletic equipment. One of the questions raised at the meeting was by Gert Engelbrecht, representative of the Bellville Athletic Club, who enquired about valid contracts that were in place between the cycling club and the City of Cape Town, but Alexander said all but one of the planned fixtures for next year have been allocated to other venues. “I am not sure about the Top 10 Championship,” he said. He said it was necessary to explore options to accommodate the cycling and athletics clubs, but that the athletic season ended around April and that most major events have been catered for around the country. “To my view the 2011 and 2012 season is done and dusted,” Alexander said. He said there are a number of running clubs (or tracks) in Cape Town, including Vygieskraal in Athlone, Wesfleur in Atlantis, Parow, Khayelitsha, Blue Downs, Kuils River and at UWC and CPUT. At Kuils River, Wesfleur and Parow however, there are no stands, while UWC is not

under the City’s control. Green Point Stadium will be completed next year March, according to James Evans of SA Athletics, who also attended the meeting. Travelling distances to alternative fields is a major concern for all the sport clubs, due to costs involved. Gert voiced his concern over a venue for 200 athletes to do pre-season training. He suggested the clubs still train at the Velodrome during the first phases of the project. “I have spoken to the developer and he said it would be possible for us to train there, as the tartan will only be laid over the last three months of the project,” Gert said. Freddie Prince, manager for District Sport and Recreation for the City of Cape Town said an audit of challenges will be done and the City will look for solutions. “If bookings protocol at other clubs are managed properly, half our problems will be solved,” he said. He said it was imperative that this group sat down to start plotting fixture lists. A follow-up meeting was scheduled for January 2011.

On Saturday 10 December Mel Roets of The Lighthouse Project presented the cheque to the Tygerberg Children’s Hospital Trust at the Pick n Pay centre in Table View. This donation has brought the cumulative amount donated by The Lighthouse Project to the Tygerberg Children’s Hospital Trust, through their sustained endeavours since 2005, to the laudable milestone of R504 163,60! Tygerberg Children’s Hospital is currently being restructured and upgraded from funds procured through the Tygerberg Children’s Hospital Trust. This is to optimise the integrated delivery of the entire spectrum of specialist child healthcare to their almost exclusively indigent community. The result of these developments will be a

child and parent friendly environment in a fundamentally decentralised children’s hospital. The children’s hospital will then operate as a functional unit, specifically dedicated to the needs of children and newborn babies, within Tygerberg Academic Hospital. Since the latter part of 2005, Mel has been manufacturing a variety of Tygerberg Children’s Hospital branded merchandise, and employing staff to sell these products on a commission basis to the public at R10 per item. The profit generated from these sales has been supplemented by income derived from annual Christmas gift wrapping and general donations, as well as a few other small fundraising initiatives. Mel’s staff operates from designated retail outlets and shopping centres where they perform an important branding and public awareness role in addition to their primary fundraising function. . Van die mense wat by die hof vir seksuele misdrywe in Parow werk, by van die slagoffertjies (voor) van seksuele misdrywe, wat vir hul eie veiligheid nie geïdentifiseer mag word nie. Spare sleeper couch? Iris House Children’s Hospice in Parow recently took a new family under its wing. The affected child in this family has cerebral palsy after undergoing an operation during which he was starved of oxygen. Iris House is a charity committed to enriching the quality of life for special needs children and young people with life-limiting or life-threatening conditions. They also provide support for their families. The parents of this child were obviously devastated and are now in dire financial difficulty, Sue van der Linde, founder of Iris House, said. During the week, the child is cared for by his grandparents as his mom is the breadwinner. They also look after his two younger

His grandfather sleeps with him and the two younger boys sleep with the grandmother. There is therefore no space,” Sue explains. Cancer support group reaches out ANDRÉ BAKKES

“When one’s child gets cancer, it can become very lonely,” says Deirdre Taylor from the My Child Has Cancer Trust (MCHCT). That is why a trust such as this is necessary, because it is there to provide support for parents of cancer sufferers. MCHCT got together on Monday this week at Killarney Race Track to celebrate Christmas. In some cases the whole family turned up, and it was clear from the onset that these parents are there for one another. Those who wanted to karaoke were kept busy with the microphone while children acquainted themselves with a jumping castle. Even Father Christmas dropped

in for a quick hello! MCHCT was only officially registered in February this year, so they are still in the process of “getting their name out there”. According to Taylor there are now 29 families in the trust and more will undoubtedly join next year. Some have even joined from faraway places such as Worcester. Taylor, whose son is a cancer survivor, continues: “We understand what it was we needed during those difficult times, so we try to provide that to other families. We get together as need arises.” She concludes by urging parents of those diagnosed with cancer to join their fledging support group. “This has made me realise that even something that we take for granted, like walking, is a gift, and that we are not put on this earth to survive, but to live.” This is what David Koen, a 17-year-old Milnerton High School student had to say regarding the tumour which was removed from his brain just two weeks ago. “We are so lucky as a family to have our son alive and well with us for Christmas, and all our friends, family, and even the community have been so supportive. I thank everyone who has kept us in their prayers,” said Gwen, David’s mother. The headaches and vomiting started a few months before the diagnosis, and at first the hospital picked it up as allergies combined with the stress of the family’s recent move to Cape Town from George. On Thursday 20 October, the symptoms came back, and the new diagnosis was that David might be lactose intolerant. Dairy was cut from his diet, but the problem returned the following day. After several blood tests, the problem could still not be determined. At this point a CT scan was recommended, and a 3cm tumour was found at the base of David’s skull. After the draining of the excess brain fluid, the headaches and vomiting had subsided, but the tumour was still believed to be

inoperable. After more tests and viewing, a discovery was made, that the tumour could in fact be operated on, and that David had a good chance of making it. “He went into the operation and now here he is two weeks later, at home where he belongs,” said Anton, David’s father. The issue now is the hospital fees which are in the hundreds of thousands. “My wife and I have decided to create a fund for David, because so many people have offered to help out financially. The fund is completely transparent – one can view exactly where their money is going. We did this to show people that we are not abusing their trust,” said Anton. There are also plans to use any excess money for children suffering the same condition or similar. David, a keen sportsman, said his illness has taught him many valuable lessons. “The fact that I have come through this without any lasting damage has strengthened my resolve to work hard and live life to the full,” said David. Here is my version of events about the complaint of Etiene Jordaan of Pine Court in Wrench Road (“Bark worse than their bite”, TygerBurger 14 December). His complaint is valid as the dogs are also a disturbance to us when the people of the court are on the stoep or in the courtyard. When we moved into the house next to the flats about five months ago we started getting law enforcement and even Metro police knocking on our door about the barking dogs. What he is not telling the paper is that I tried to put measures in place to prevent the dogs from looking into their courtyard and barking. When we tried to close the area where the dogs have access to look into the courtyard, he called the building inspector, who stopped us from closing of the vibracrete on a plan as they had a problem with the extension of the wall. The previous owner had the same complaints from them and had to give her dog

away and a few days later the children’s bicycles were stolen out of the yard. He does not complain about the other dogs in the adjacent houses, but just ours as I’ve never seen law enforcement staff coming to issue them with letters. I will now close the gap in the wall with vibracrete as the plans are now approved by Council and hope this will help to decrease the barking of the dogs. As for E Jordaan, he might consider putting measures in place from his side, e.g. looking at the dogs that are kept by certain people at the flats, people walking during the early hours of the morning on the stoep which the dogs can see and then start barking – and stop complaining every time. My response to the letter by Michelle titled “Give to those who need help” in TygerBurger of 14 December: Michelle’s thinking about giving to the neediest only applies to government services. If we see government assistance going to those with some resources while the poor are not helped, then I agree we should protest. But if an individual or private company chooses to give a Christmas wish to a certain person, then we should respect their decision. A gift is not earned nor is it a person’s right to receive. A gift can be given to someone who has much or who has little – that’s the beauty of a gift. There is no means test for giving, and no gift-police to judge its validity. If you apply Michelle’s logic to all giftgiving, then none of us may give to our friends before we have made sure that all the more needy people have been given gifts first. Giving cannot, and never has been, only to those who are worse off. Rather giving is all about the giver wanting to bless someone else. My second response to Michelle is that I know that hearing the words “special needs child” doesn’t explain much. I didn’t understand fully until my own child was born with special needs. I didn’t understand how frightening and overwhelming it can be. Nor how physically tiring it can be with years of interrupted sleep. Nor how emotionally draining it can be when specialists aren’t even sure how to help your child. I didn’t know that therapies were so expensive and are needed every week. I didn’t know how demoralising it is to clean up vomit five times a day or to know that your child has thoughts but cannot express himself. I don’t judge you for not understanding, because parents of children with special needs talk mostly about the triumphs this is how we survive. I encourage you to spend a morning with the child who was the recipient of the gift you wrote about. You’ll leave with a sense of having been part of something intensely difficult, but also something precious, and may even wish that you had some extra rands to give them too. JACQUI Email

New movie looks at euthanasia DESIREÉ RORKE

Can the battle against pet over-population be won? This is the question an independent filmmaker Riaan Hendricks is doing his utmost to unravel with the movie Wild Dog – a movie the NSPCA would rather not have see the light of day. This film, which is still to be completed, is an eye-opener that turns the spotlight on the plight of hundreds of thousands of domesticated cats and dogs that are euthanised each year. Especially now, over the festive season when these numbers increase significantly. It is an observational documentary, which draws the viewer into the lives of the people struggling to stem the tide of unwanted animals and its impact on society. The film focuses on and plays off at the Helderberg Animal Welfare kennels where approximately 140 animals are euthanised each month – a conservative estimate according to Julia Evans, general manager at the organisation. This kennel serves only the Helderberg and surrounding area, and already cannot cope with the influx of unwanted animals. Sick animals or those with behaviour problems are put out first, to open up space for new animals coming in, and so the cycle continues. “We absolutely hate euthanasia, but we are chock-a-block – our kennels, foster care and adoption systems. We are left with no choice,” she says. According to Evans, the situation had reached crisis level years ago, and that something drastic needs to be done. Evans supports this movie, and hopes that it will bring the necessary awareness. Alarmingly, Evans and the Helderberg Animal Welfare, is the only organisation TygerBurger spoke to, willing to blow the lid off the euthanasia debacle. Both the AACL (Animal Anti-Cruelty League) and the SPCA in Cape Town, have declined to make public the number of animals euthanised by them. René Southwood, manager at the AACL, is of the opinion that these figures will make the public “angry” and that this kind of awareness won’t solve the problem either. Also, Sarah Scarth from the SPCA in Cape Town wishes not to release their euthanasia statistics, but does confirm that the number of stray animals admitted over the past few months has increased. “The numbers of strays admitted in November was up by 39 percent and this puts even more pressure on our kennels ... At this time of the year we also see the number of surrendered animals increase – animals handed over to our animal care centre by owners who no longer want them or can afford them. NSPCA (National Council of SPCAs), slammed Hendricks and the film, saying that this kind of publicity will turn the public to pro-life (no-kill shelters), resulting in the SPCA losing financial benefactors. “We also question certain aspects of the film in legal terms,” she said, referring to Hendricks filming the animal inspector of Helderberg Animal Welfare going to a house to pick up a sick dog. According to Kuch, the inspector in the film must be qualified, and must have the magisterial authority to come onto the property to remove the animal and that a minor is not allowed to be interviewed. Hendricks however confirmed that the girl in the film is 18 and that the particular animal owner contacted the Helderberg Animal Welfare and requested them to come and take their sick dog. “We worry about the impression this movie will give the public. It undermines our message,” she said, and says Hendricks must be careful not to get himself prosecuted. “The sad reality is that ‘any port in a storm’ is not an option. Finding someone to take an animal to avoid euthanising it, is irresponsible. Animal collectors are devious and many people are misguided when they take an animal, especially if they are told or have been led to believe that euthanasia might be imminent. This is emotional blackmail, impulse adopting and the long-term welfare of the animal is put at risk. It is inhumane to confine animals for long periods. “Stress results and this may lead to behavioural problems which may never be overcome – rendering the animal even less likely to be ‘adoptable’ or to settle in a home,” the NSPCA’s standard policy on eu-

Filmmaker Hendricks however disagrees with Kuch and still hopes that the NSPCA will support the movie. “What makes the story moving and engaging is the compassion with which such emotional demanding work is done.” He is now seeking public funding for the completion of the film via http://www.indiegogo.com/wilddog. Hendricks hopes that once the film has been completed it will be used countrywide by communities and animal welfare organisations to make the public aware of the crisis and the importance of sterilisation. The fact that sterilisation is the only long-term solution is one thing all animal welfare organisations agree upon. According to Tamsin Nel, CEO of SA Mass Animal Sterilisation Trust, sterilisation is financially more viable than euthanasia. Her research shows the cost of one female dog being sterilised coming to R431, compared with the cost of one rescued animal being euthanased coming to R572, after 10 days of kennelling. She came to the conclusion that mass euthanasia would be cheaper only in the short-term and only if kennelling is not required. “Mass sterilisation would be cheaper in the long run as it will prevent the births of up to 474 new dogs or cats over a two-year period, with a single sterilisation,” she says. ‘Neighbourhood heroes saved me’ CERRIN HENDRICKS

“My husband was away in George, my son was at a rehearsal, and if my neighbours and ADT had not taken charge of the situation like they did, I would not have had the chance to celebrate Christmas with my family.” This is what Michelle du Plessis, a Bothasig resident, had to say regarding the local unsung heroes of the Bothasig community. On the evening of Wednesday 30 November, Michelle was packing groceries in her home when she tripped over one of her dogs and fell through her front window. Bleeding and dazed, she pressed all the panic buttons in the house and tried to wrap her bleeding arm up. At this point, Kayleen Skrush-matta, one of Michelle’s neighbours, was walking past and heard the noise of the alarm and the screaming. “At first I thought it was a break-in, but then I realised that there was only one person in the house and that they were in trouble. I walked to the door and looked in, and there was Michelle trying to wrap up her arm, there was blood everywhere. I knew I had to act quickly so I wrapped her arm and started making calls,” said Kayleen.

After wrapping up the arm, Kayleen saw another neighbour, Frank Vos, walking out of his house. She called him over and he immediately went looking for a tie and made a tourniquet for Michelle’s arm. Soon after, ADT’s Wayne Roux arrived at the scene and made sure that the emergency services were on their way, and then helped out Frank, who had been joined by Thabiet Adams, who was taking turns keeping the tourniquet tight. “The hospital told me that had it not been for the efforts of these people, especially Kayleen, I would have either lost the arm or bled to death before the ambulance arrived,” said Michelle. Deon du Plessis, Michelle’s husband, was very thankful to all those who helped. “I was away on a business trip in George, and without the help of these people I would have lost my wife. There are no words which can express my gratitude. People literally dropped whatever they were doing to help, and my sister even came by the house with her husband and cleaned up so that my son and I didn’t have to see all the blood. “Wayne Roux consistently checks up, and this shows me that ADT and the local community have really gone the extra mile,” said Deon.

‘Hookah pipes not safe’ GARY VAN DYK

Parents are being warned against buying hookah pipes for their children. This warning comes from dedicated anti-drug campaigner in the community Dhakir Christians who feels that parents are sometimes unaware of the dangers of smoking these water pipes also known as oka pipes. “In recent times the smoking of these pipes has become quite popular, especially among youth, and in many cases parents have been ignoring it because it seemed harmless,” he says. “The popularity of water pipes may be due in part to perceptions that they are safer than cigarettes. “However, water pipe smoke contains nicotine, carbon monoxide, carcinogens and greater amounts of tar and heavy metals than cigarette smoke. “Research has found that those young adults who used water pipes were also more likely to use cigarettes, marijuana, illicit drugs and alcohol.

“Experts have warned that smoking these devices for one hour is as harmful as smoking up to 200 cigarettes in the same amount of time.” Christians also pointed out that the passing around of the pipe in a communal environment can also increase chances of spreading infectious illnesses such as tuberculosis. Another alarming fact is that some parents are allowing their young children, sometimes as young as six years to smoke from these pipes. “Parents must be aware that these pipes have the potential to lead to dependence on nicotine, and can cause cancer just as cigarettes can. “Smoke from a single hookah session contains approximately 36 times the tar, 1,7 times the nicotine, and 8,3 times the carbon monoxide as the smoke produced by one cigarette. “With these facts facing them I just hope that parents are aware of the dangers to themselves and their children,” he said.

Calypso cricket a big hit Batters and bowlers were doing their thing on the beaches of Cape Town last week as Calypso Cricket celebrated their 21st birthday. With schools out and summer here, cricket was topping the recreational agenda for over 3 000 children from different communities, who took part in the 21st annual Sporting Chance Calypso Cricket Festival, held on local beaches. This year, there was even more cause for celebration, as the festival that gives a summer splash to cricket, came of age, Now in its 21st year, the festival ran every day from Monday 12 December until Friday 16 December on Sunrise Beach near Muizenberg, Main Beach at The Strand and on Long Beach in Kommetjie. Borne from a desire to introduce large numbers of kids to cricket and bring together the various communities and cultures of South Africa, The Sporting Chance Calypso Cricket Festival was started by Brad Bing of youth sports development agency Sporting Chance in 1990. The festival, in association with Virgin Active, I&J and Supersport Let’s Play, is an annual highlight for thousands of children who are bused in to the beach, from various communities in the Western Cape including Elsies River, Belhar, Langa, Manenberg and Ocean View, to pit their cricketing skills against one another. Aside from a trip to the beach for many children who would otherwise not have this kind of opportunity, the festival highlights Sporting Chance’s determination to encourage sport as a fixture in all

Since then, the Calypso Cricket Festival has continued to identify natural talent and has facilitated the opportunity for 43 learners to go on to play provincial cricket at school level. The festival is a unique and fun adaptation of the conventional game. Employing most of the rules of cricket, it is played on the beach with two teams of 10 players each. This spirited game originated in the West Indies.

Safeguard your cash “During the festive season, it is a known fact that members of the public are in possession of greater amounts of cash due to annual bonuses,” says Lieutenant Colonel Andrè Traut from the Western Cape Police’s media centre. “Furthermore, savings are withdrawn and ‘stokvel’ (savings clubs) monies are divided among members. Factory and building staff are usually also paid their wages during this time of the year, and because it is normal to adopt the festive moods associated with the season, one can easily lose focus and neglect personal security, all aspects well known to the common criminal.” Traut warns the public to be vigilant at all times, and to protect their hard-earned money by applying basic security measures. “Be alert when leaving a bank, and ensure that you are not followed by being aware of your surroundings,” he says. People participating in “stokvels” are encouraged to exercise caution when handling large sums, and to make additional security arrangements. Contact your local police station if you need any assistance with advice on how to protect yourself in this regard. The following hints could be useful when making cash withdra-

wals. At the ATM . Be alert and conscious of your surroundings when using the ATM. . Never give your card or PIN (Personal Identification Number) to anyone, for any reason. . Do not write your PIN on the card or anything that is kept with the card.

Traut warns the public to be vigilant at all times, and to protect their hard earned money by apply ing basic security meas ures. . Do not insert your card until asked to do so by the ATM display screen. . Never use an ATM with a blank screen and, if the ATM is obscured from view or poorly lit, leave immediately and find another ATM. . Stand close to the ATM and use your body and hand as a shield to make sure nobody sees you keying in your pin. . Also, make sure you keep your hand over the card slot to make sure nobody can swop or take your

card. Never accept help from strangers when using an ATM. . You should be wary of strangers asking for help. Criminals work in teams: one to distract you while the other steals your card or money. . If your card is retained (swallowed) by the ATM it is advisable to phone your bank toll-free stop card line immediately and stop your card. . Never allow a bystander to call the toll-free stop card line on your behalf – they could be tricking you into thinking your card has been stopped. . Guards are placed at ATMs to discourage criminal activities and therefore cannot help you with transactions. . If you need help, ask a bank official. . It is advisable to set a daily ATM withdrawal limit at your branch. Safety in the bank . When withdrawing large cash amounts make sure that you are escorted by one or two friends. . Do not accept help from strangers, rather ask the bank personnel. . Always ensure that there is an acceptable distance between you and other bank clients. Frame of mind for art ANDRÉ BAKKES

Ian Simons, the mindful artist, mind expanding philosopher and mind-blowing individual looks suspiciously at the voice recorder. “It is very difficult speaking to a mass audience ... ” With Simons the ellipsis comes in very handy. He takes his time when answering questions and his sentences often drift into incomprehensible mumbling. One nonetheless gets the impression that he has much more to say than what he lets on. “Sometimes I think things ... And then I disagree with myself ... ” He laughs shyly. The 48-year-old Van Riebeeckshof resident asks questions in his paintings, but as with the questions he asks of life, there seems to be no clear answer. Most of his majestic art is based on classical principles, but in the place of a flower or a book, the subject will now hold a gun. This theme comes up in several of his artworks, so the obvious question is: “What are you implying here?” Simons takes a few long seconds to get his ducks in row, so to speak, laughs and answers: “There’s obviously the anti ... the war kind ... there’s women with guns ... it’s the male fight, you know, the ... what’s going on in the world. Getting back to the heart, the feminine ... Why am I struggling to speak?” He giggles. “When I paint something I see an image, and I was looking through

Photo: André Bakkes this book and saw this classical subject and thought she needs a gun in her hand!” He continues by saying it’s the mind, or “the mind in separation” which causes people to live in disharmony and fear. One cannot help but think that Simons has something grand to share with the world, but getting him to reveal it is something of a challenge. It was this reporter’s view that a glass of red wine might release Simons from his recorderphobia, but another likelihood was that it might also have exacerbated his indecision.

“The darkness is unknown and evil arises out of the fear of darkness. Ignorance is apparently bliss,” he says before attending to the dogs and cats. “If your mind is ... Moses!” he calls his cat. “If your mind is ... Oh, I’ve lost my train of thought.” He stays quiet for several beats. “If you can control your thought, and not let your thoughts control you then you can be happy. If you think stressful thoughts then you create it. The mind creates guilt or fear. That is the illusion. The illusion of what’s going on!” Despite being highly analytical, Simons reckons “mental interference” gets in the way of his art. “I usually paint when I’m in a Zen place. I try to keep the ... My mind, I can ... Well, we can all quiet our minds and still use it as a tool ... Some identify too much with their own perceptions of themselves ... ” He giggles again. The interview lasted an hour and a half, but the sure truth buried just underneath the surface of Simons’ demeanour stayed hidden. Enlightened nuggets of society, art and the mind mixed almost flawlessly with his scattered frame of mind. He is a truly unique individual with streaks of genius, but understanding his viewpoint is very much like a game of “connect the dots”. Words are, however, not his forté. Come ‘catch’ their EP at Rock the River LOUISA STEYL

Fresh off the stage at Synergy, Woodstock Mafia are gearing up to take on Rock the River. Not bad for a band that only played their first gig in April this year. The band is made up of Joe Theron on vocals, Nick van Rensburg on guitar, Ryan Matthews on bass and Owen Ingarfield on drums. They have been playing together since January. Ryan describes the band’s music as “post grunge rock ’n roll” with influences from bands such as Foo Fighters and Incubus. When they started playing together, they did so with a goal, one they have already achieved. “Playing Synergy was a goal for the band from the very beginning,” Ryan says. Woodstock Mafia played the LMG stage and despite the heat, the band

enjoyed a good turnout and positive responses. “We worked really hard to get there,” Ryan says, adding that they also brought their own quirks to the stage, like a coolerbox filled with beers that they threw out to the Synergy crowd. “When you have the opportunity to play a festival, people want to remember you for something,” Ryan says. He points out that festivals give the band a lot of exposure in a short space of time. As opposed to Synergy, Ryan says Rock the River will expose Woodstock Mafia to a younger audience. He says the band expected an older audience, but their fastest growing fan base is between the ages of 18 and 25. He believes that for a young band, in terms of playing experience, exposure is extremely important.

Woodstock Mafia – gearing up for big things in 2012. Woodstock Mafia recently recorded their EP, which is available to buy at their gigs, but just like beer, the band likes to throw these out at their shows too. “Come to the gig, you might catch one,” Ryan says. The band hopes to release their

single early next year, before recording a music video. “Doing a single is so important for a band,” Ryan says, adding: “It’s an opportunity to capture an audience before you tour.” Woodstock Mafia is planning to do that in May, when they head to

Johannesburg and Pretoria. Eventually they hope to be up there once every two to three months. Ryan says festivals are also a really good place to build strong working relationships with other bands. “The community is really strong,” he says. “As a band we take our rehearsals very seriously,” Ryan points out. The band practises twice a week. They even got their name from their rehearsal venue, in Woodstock: “Owen chirped Woodstock Mafia” and the name, which refers to a collective of people, stuck. Ryan says each time they get on stage, they give it their all, and they promise that Rock the River will be no different. At the tender age of 15, Michelle Joubert (Curro) has just returned from Moscow with a silver medal after competing in her first-ever Kyokushin-kan World Junior Championship. Swollen feet and bruises are all part of the game, but the medal and status received surpass any pain. “I was very nervous about the championship. It was my first international tournament and I didn’t know what to expect with 452 entrants coming from 39 countries. “My first fight was very close, but Shihan Hennie Bosman, who is my mentor, gave me a signal to use my legs and that turned the fight in my favour. His knowledge of the art and the way he sums up a fight has a calming effect on you when he is standing on the side of the mat. “Japan and Russia are two of the top countries in the world in Kyokushin-kan. Seeing how they fight and the intensity with which they do it, has a positive effect on you and motivates you to train even harder,” said Michelle. There are only three trophies in

the tournament. Michelle and the rest of her team were proud when she won the Will for Victory trophy after she narrowly lost in the final which would have made her world champion. “All of us are very proud of her. Michelle started doing karate seven years ago at the dojo and she has gone from strength to strength. “The focus and determination she showed against the best on the planet is a feather in the cap for South Africa. It was very satisfying to receive compliments from the Japanese on our progress and improved performances on the world stage. It really makes all the effort and countless hours of training worthwhile,” said Hennie Bosman. Michelle is currently busy with an instructor’s course conducted by Bosman. “I enjoy working with younger children starting in martial arts. It’s fun being assistant coach at Curro. It’s one of my passions working and seeing their progress,” she said. What makes Michelle an even more impressive individual is that she has also represented her country in chess and the performing arts.

Die room van SA atletiek het Saterdag die laaste byeenkoms in die Geel Bladsye-somerreeks in Parow ondersteun. En dit was veral dié groot name in SA atletiek wat die belangstelling gaande gemaak het. Khotso Makoena, VS: 7,92; Chris Harmse, HG: 71,66; Phillipa van der Merwe, 200 m: 24,75; Cindy Stewart, 60 m: 7,52; Engel Roscoe 150 m: 15,59, Sergio Mullins 15,70 en Christne Kalmer, met haar twee oorwinnings (3 000 en 1 000), het die toeskouers nie teleurgestel nie. ’n Hele rits Tygerbergers het die oomblik aangegryp en in die geselskap van die grotes ook hul kant gebring.

Onder die juniors het Gerhard de Beer (AGN, 51,37) en Jan-Louw Kotze (P-Gim, 50,23) hul tweestryd in die diskus voortgesit. Morne Moolman (DFM) SG: 76.96 en Jean-Marie Senekal (Paarl) 300H: 43,05 het gewys hulle is reg vir groot dinge.
