AMELIA EARHART MUSEUM ADDITION
PROJECT
This is a siminar format studio focused on the development of a small project, an addition to the existing Amelia Earhart’s birthplace Museum in Atchison Ks, with the emphasis on building detail, performance, and graphic communication. The addition’s main purpose is the housing two replicas of Earhart’s most distinctive planes: The Lockheed Vega and the Lockheed Electra 10E. The addition was also to include a world map with discriptions of Earhart’s travels and a short video documentary. Besides the permanent exhibition, the facility was intended to be used as a multi-purpose event room for the community of Atchison.
OBJECTIVE
- Develope an architectural solution in an organized sequential process - Develop design criteria based on the analysis of the existing conditions - Understand the functional and technical issues related to the program - Develope clear and understandable graphics, using different types of drawing tools - Develope the ability to establish critical inquiry on peer to peer reviews - Develope the ability to incorporate relevant precedents in the design process
PROGRAM (approximately 11,000 SF)
- Exhibition (8,000-9,000sq.ft) Exhibition Space 8,000- 9,000sq.ft. Exhibition should be spacious and high enough to accommodate the replica planes - Public (1,200sq.ft) Kitchen 200sq.ft. Multi-purpose Room 1,000 sq.ft. - Storage / Utility (1,060sq.ft) Mechanical Room 500sq.ft; Public Elevator 60sq.ft./floor; Restrooms 500sq.ft (may be individual/group)

HASKELL CULTURAL CENTER ADDITION
PROJECT
Haskell Indian Nations University (HINU) is a premier national intertribal university that serves the education needs of the first nations across the United States. Started in 1884 as a government-run assimilation school in Lawrence, KS, HINU evolved into a university in 1993, with the vision of being a national center for education, research, and cultural preservation of Native American tribes. A Cultural Center and a Museum was established in 2002 to celebrate the establishment of the university. It holds the Frank A. Rinehart Photo Collection and a variety of objects representing the first nations’ material culture. The center serves as a steward for American Indian cultural traditions, a truthful narrative of HINU’s evolution, and a place of living heritage and teaching facility for tribes and the general public. To better serve this mission, HINU intends to expand the current facility by building a new center/ museum, which should also be a visible landmark for the university. In this studio, I was to work on this project, selecting a suitable location within HINU premises.
OBJECTIVE
- Developing a programmatic strategy that organizes a complex building program within an urban context - Generating a formal strategy that is expressive of the contextual, functional, social, and symbolic dimensions of the program - Devising a technical strategy that matches the formal and programmatic strategies, demonstrated by schematic proposals for structure, building services, and construction (wall section/ materiality) - Creating an effective representational strategy, and developing related skills
PROGRAM (approximately 35,000 SF)
- Exhibition (12,000sq.ft) Galleries 12,000sq.ft., including a Temporary Exhibit Gallery of 2000sq.ft.; One of the galleries should be spacious and high enough to accommodate replicas of tribal dwellings and totems. - Auditorium (2,500sq.ft) Auditorium for 100 seats 2,000sq.ft. ; service 300sq.ft.; storage 200sq.ft. 3 Classrooms (multifunctional) for 16-24 students 400 SF each 1200sq.ft. - Public (6,000sq.ft) Lobby/Info 750sq.ft.; Café 20-30 seats/kitchen 1,500sq.ft.; bookshop 1,000sq.ft; outdoor display/gathering area 2,000sq.ft.; 02 Classrooms 500sq.ft each. - Administrative (3,000sq.ft) Office and other related staff facilities 1,500sq.ft.; Research Archive 1,500sq.ft. RIVERVIEW RECREATION
PROJECT
Kansas City is a city with much potential and through the years it has grown/ expanded, becoming a very diverse area to visit. No area shows this more then the Riverview area of Kansas City. In this studio I was to focus on a place/ location in Downtown Riverview and provide the area with a facility that would give something back to the community. The studio’s intent was to have me design a facility of my choosing and to develop a program of my own. With this I provided my own personal objectives that I wanted to complete and objectives that I wanted my purposal to accomplish for/ in the Riverview Area.
OBJECTIVE
- Develope a program that functions well in the Riverview Area - Develope a facility that gives something back to the community - Develope a facility that involves the community - Develope clear and understandable graphics, using different types of drawing tools and programs - Develope the ability to incorporate relevant precedents in the design process
MISSION STATEMENT
To provide the Riverview Area with a center that gives back to the community. A center that educates not only fitness awareness, but also other ways of staying healthy. A place for people to come and stay physically active, while forming an aesthetically pleasing environment. It is a center that allows for community involvement in their area where they can express their interests and ideas among one another as well as helping the environment around them.
PROGRAM (No Approximate SF)
- Public Multi-purpose Room (2 Rooms); Playground/ Public Outdoor Space; Study Room; Roof Garden - Administrative Kitchen; Conference Room; Offices (3 Rooms) - Storage / Utility Mechanical Room; Public Elevator; Restrooms (may be individual/group)

PENCIL SKETCHES Einstein Tower RIGHT: The drawing is of the Einstein Tower built by Erich Mendelsohn. The drawing is made by pencil and contains many values of shading that help show the curves and form of the tower.
BOTTOM: Is of the Einstein Tower’s design. Two images show the towers front and side elevations and one image shows the layout.
38
Notre Dame du Haut, Ronchamp LEFT: Notre Dame du Haut, Ronchamp, France.
Le Corbusier wrote that “light and shade reveal these forms; cubes, cones, spheres and he used light to play with form and to create a visual tactile experience in the interior of the chapel. Here I used different pencil values to capture this dynamic. Light reflects off the left side of the structure, while the right side is in shadow.
BOTTOM: Image is the layout of Dame du Haut. It help shows the structures whole
form.
39
DRAWINGS Trees
RIGHT: The drawing is done with pen and I wanted to create a perspective view
where the woods not only seem to keep on going into the background, but also seems to reach to the sky above.
BOTTOM: Image is of a loosley drawn tree done by charcoal. It shows freedom and flow within the line.
40
Comics
:
LEFT Image is of a comic book hero on top of a gargoyle looking down upon an imaginary city. Using pen, I wanted to incorporate two things that I enjoy, buildings and comics.
BOTTOM: The drawing done in pen, is of the Batman logo. Inside the logo contains a
city plan of the imaginary city that I created.
41
MODELS
42
Concept Building Model Using modeling stryofoam I created a small scale (1:500) of a concept building design. Placed on the site model, I was able to see how the design fit with the context around it at a macro level.
With a larger scale site model (1:250) I used mounting board to create a larger scale model to fit within the model site. This allowed me to look at the concept design and the surrounding context at a micro level.
43
44
Organic Model
Using bristol paper and bass wood, the model consisted of four circular tiers that can spin left or right. The frame of the structure can change from a horizontal stand to a vertical stand, allowing the entire model to change in appearance.
