GETTING LOST IN THE CITY

Academic / 2014 / 4th year [ Instructor] Yun-Shang, Chiou [ Program ] Baseball Park,Public park [ Location ] Taipei, Taiwan [ Project ] Solo Project

KEY DESCRIPTION The aim of this project is to explore waht different economic activities influence people’s life and redefine experiences of public spaces. Since capitalism was introduced, the definition of spaces and human’s behavioural pattern in the city has been significantly changed. Most people are restrained by pressures from monotonous way of work and life.

A basic principle of modern state capitalism is that costs and risks are socialised to the extent possible, while profit is privatised. - Noam Chomsky

New Mode of Operation Under today’s economic pattern, most public spaces is privatised, marginalised or is dead because these spaces cannot be profitable to those businessman. Therefore, the new mode of public space in this project basically aim to solve this issue. It will be competely autonomy, which means this plaza will be alive and vigorous without any specific economic intervention. Such large-scale carnivals or outdoor concerts or outdoor exhibitions can be held here. These new elements will bring a completely different sense of urban atmosphere to the people working/living in the neighbourhood.

Old Town Tranditional Market

The site is in the center of the Taipei city so the convenient public transports here are its advantage. Also it precisely sits at the entrance of the city and are surrounded by two main roads, which

means it is a very busy area. Also, it is located between the old

town and new town. These elements are important point in the issue that is mentioned previously. Another point to say is that the seperation of new and old town is another issue in this site, because it has caused serious unbalance of development between two areas. Besides, green space is greatly not enough for many workers and residents here.

Auduence’s view: Fantastic city’s scenery is another attraction for people going to baseball games so the diercation of seats is determined by where the best view is.

Main Targets

Public transpots normally stand for the group of medium and low social-class citizens, who are my main targeting in this project. The trnsports, in this area, are the Taipei main station and the metro station. Therefore, the spaces between the transports and baseball park is developed with harmonious hierechy. In oder to make people flow into the site naturally, different programs are arranged linely and integrated by considering the visitors feeling.

NEW URBAN EXPERIENCE (PUBLIC PLAZA) The plaza connects the baseball field and the outdoor flexible space from the east to the west; new and old towns are linked from the north to the south. Crowds gather to the plaza from the north and south. The space in the east and west provides activities for passersby or people gathering here.

Elementary education is an influential period for children to develop their own characters in the future lives. In this project there are two main issues to be explored. Firstly, how space and envirnment influncing character development is mainly considered. Secondly, to integrate nature, man-made school and community with harmony is another important issue as well. This site is full of natural treasures and a huge mountain precisely sits against the north of the site. The best way to respect and be harmonious with nature might be to make buildings disappear.

Site

The site is a little far away from the city and close to a mountain which is called Toad Mountain. It is like a screte corner in this bustle city. People can easily immerse themselves into the tranquil envirnment with natural resource.

Studyign In The City

Close to the nature

Studying in the class

Explore in the nature

There are four main factors will affect children’s development. They include obersevation, self-reflection, environment and fellowship. They are like a process, when childeren grow up and manage to discover themselves. Pupils in the school interact with each other and explore envirnment by themselves and then do self-reflection. This is simply like a process to build up and shape their character. From my perspective, I see “envirnment” as the most important factor amongst those factors above. Students learning in the natural envirnment can explore themselves widely. Therefore, the role of school changes and integrte with nature.

(1895-1973) “ Nature is our greatest teacher ” - Edna Walling

New school : opened playground is connected to the mountain and classroom.

Traditional school : Authority Offices is in the centre in order to oversee.

Process of Development The spaces are arranged linearly into a process of developing character with sequence. The process inculdes 4 steps, namely obersevation, learning, interacting with fellow and self-reflection. This process will repeat again and again, when stendents study in the school over time. Also, it is a two-way process and goes forward and backward.

Man-made,Nature and Community What I manage to make the nature and the man-made building coexist together with harmony is to invisibilize the man-made building. Therefore, When people on the ground, they will only see a natural scenery and the mountain in the background. On the ground, there is a park for people in the community. It also serves as a buffer zone between outside world and inside school. This strategy makes the site connect to the surrounding more closely and school, in this way, becomes a more peaceful place with nature.

T H E I S O L AT E D L A N D Plaza,Zagreb SITE

This plaza is the most famous and vibrant public space in the Zagreb. Resident always gather here. We chose this public space because we mainly focus on sloving the recent p r o b l e m s i n t h i s c i t y. W e h o p e t o t a k e a d v a n t a g e o f i t s l o c a t i o n , f u c t i o n a n d p o p u l a r i t y, which will make people come to this site.

CONCEPT In our design, we think recent people need a new activity on the plaza. It is mainly to provide a procedure of treatment and make people to understand the importance of f o o d , a n d t h e n t o s o l v e t h e m o d e r n p e o p l e ’s problems mentioned in the first paragraph and rehabilitate the essence of the plaza. First, we implement two main programs in this plaza, self-sufficient space and a little of small spaces for meditation. When our physiological demand is fulfilled, then we would promote ourselves in psychological aspect. We place these two spaces, the self-sufficient space and the space of meditation, into vertical dimension. In our design, the small buildings and trees on the ground floor are designed a suitable place for meditation and small group talk with cozy and stillness, even being temporary shelters for homeless. Above the trees, it is a public farm.
