HELLO
I’m Tyler. Most call me Ty. I’m an Industrial Designer, a fitness enthusiast, and a coffee lover... Your everyday life wanderer and supporter of puppies - in search of meaning and purpose. Looking to find a design family that allows me to explore both. Pushes me to evolve. Enables me to grow. And where ever that may be, do as Kobe does. “Go there and put in work.” This is a collection of my work and also offers a peek into who I am as a designer and as a person. So sit back. Relax. And enjoy the blood, sweat, and laughter.

LAYERED PROTECTIVE CASE Accessories should complement a product both functionally and visually. My colleagues and I worked with POCKETEK INC. to design a protective case for the Fujifilm Instax Mini 8 that would be inspired by culture and cater to the Instax user demographic. We aimed to design a case that was not only durable but also inspired by cultures and trends.

THE APPROACH Our approach was to ideate on possible ways for the case to interact with the camera, additional necessary features, and potential materials. These considerations were driven by the instax user and the culture surrounding polaroid photography.
TREND RESEARCH Before pen was put to paper, it was first important to completely understand who the product was meant for - what types of products that person gravitated towards - what was it about those products that embodied that lifestyle.

After recieving prototypes we learned that this material was able to conform to the product, however we had to adjust dimensions to fit tighter tolerances.

BRING PHYSICAL THERAPY WITH YOU Athletes undergo EMS to improve strength and endurance, boost recovery, and fight pain. I looked to design a product that would harness this technology and make it more accessible. This tool needed to be an effective solution that embodied the athletic lifestyle.

HOW MIGHT WE PAIR TECHNOLOGY WITH CONVENIENCE? Electric Muscle Stimulation (EMS) therapy is a regiment that involves sending electric current through the muscle. These electric pulses send messages to the brain which then tells the muscle to contract and relax the same way it would during exercise. My goal was to make this technology more accessible to athletes by pairing it with smart devices.

MAKING ARTIFICIAL NORMAL Our objective was to develop a prosthetic for children that was robust, easy to repair and appealling to the colombian culture. The limb must also address the financial limitations of the end user and ensure that it can be built using local manufacturing.

For years, Colombia has been battling the war on drug trafficking and the violence that comes with it. As a result, landmine accidents have become a huge problem. My team and I had the opportunity to work with Mahavir Kmina, an organization that provides prosthetic limbs to the millions of youth affected by landmines.
Our challenge was how to mimic the human’s natural walking cycle. We went through a series of prototyping phases where we tested iterations that aimed to accomplish this task.
The red represents the areas still effected by landmines and the civil war happening in Colombia.

FLAT PACK PROSTHETICS EASY TO PRODUCE CUSTOMIZABLE AFFORDABLE VERSATILE ROBUST
Prototyping/Testing PHASE 1
Our initial test proved that the materials would handle the stress. However, our knee design required extra attention to ensure that it would mimic natural extension.
PHASE 2
After refinement and testing, we found that the addition of a bungee chord in the knee would provide the kick we were looking for. Iterations to the foot became necessary to ensure it would withstand heal and toe strike.

FINAL PROTOTYPE Our Final vision for this product was to capture the vibrant nature of Colombian culture. We wanted the prosthetic to speak to the flavorful essence that Colombia has. This solution is not only effective, it is also affordable. Because of the financial restrictions of the users, we needed to be sure that they could be fixed and adjusted easily and cost effectively.

RECOVERY TOOL ATHLETES WANT TO USE Methods for muscle maintenance have been researched and practiced for years. It’s as simple as working out trigger points (commonly known as knots) using tools like foam rollers and other tools that achieve the same effect. At the end of the day, it is a simple process, but its not practiced. The goal was to design a tool that would change that.

Americans over the age of 18 develop musculoskeletal injury
Adults utilize physical therapy in 2015
People suffering injuries do not have the means or the time to go to therapy
How do we reduce the need for recovery from injury? It is clear that the need for physical therapy exists. However, rather than fixing the engine, I decided to instead focus my energy on properly maintaining it. Proper preparation early on will lead to less need for fixing later. A classic formula that is often preached but less often followed.
What is it about using these products and taking care of ourselves that is so difficult?
Existing Pain Points Awkward Ergonomics Difficult to Operate Lack of Versatility Obtrusiveness Inconvenient Intimidating Ineffective
