The Bahamian Bean Off-grid hurricane s h e lt e r & micro Resort Fall 2020 Jose Gamez
Eleuthera Island, The Bahamas
In collaboration with students from the Bahamas, the design of an off-grid hurricane shelter merged with the desire for a small-scale, easily fabricated resort dwelling situated on the Center of Technology & Innovation campus on Eleuthera Island. To combat threatening hurricane conditions, the project is constructed on a raised foundation, providing an occupiable gathering space below the main living level. The interior spaces, including a bedroom, living space and compact kitchen and bath unit, are surrounded by an outer shell in the form of a covered patio that can be closed off from outside conditions with an operable louver system
Structural diagram
The design of a set of single family units, including lower units for ADA requirements, led to the proposal of a connective community of units set around a central gathering space. These units are intended to be easily assembled as a kit of parts with necessary prefabricated structural member shipped to the site

Hearth asylum center rome study abroad semester Spring 2020 Jeffrey Balmer
Rome, Italy
Contributing to a programmatic need for seamless procession for refugees and others seeking asylum, this project creates a protective sanctuary among the bustle of the ancient city of Rome. The social issues of layering public and private space converge in a set of integral moments: a void carved out of the building to supply a flood of natural light into a central courtyard, and a below-ground lecture space that acts as the primary inspiration for the project’s title. These spaces encourage direct interaction between occupants, as well as an uninterrupted procession between different levels The diagrammatic quality of the project provides a basis for interrogate of the visual connections between each floor as one ascends to more specified spaces for work and exhibition

Nightlife uptown Education & Performance center Fall 2019 Nicholas Ault
Charlotte, NC
Located at the heart of Uptown Charlotte, NightLife Uptown fronts the historical Carolina Theatre as a multi-layered extension of the performing arts culture of the city. The program of this commercial tower blends together multi-use educational spaces such as a research library and study rooms with diverse performance spaces for dance and theater. The design welcomes its occupants to move vertically and horizontally through the open floor plan, creating an interplay between public and private activity as one moves higher The south-facing side staggers its program to encourage the introduction of terraced ecosytems, which accompany the interior study and performance space while acting as reservioirs for rainwater collection. The street side of the building is adorned with a folding tessellated skin, filtering natural light into open areas while offering carefully articulated views of the city

NoDa Streetscape center community & recreation center Spring 2019 Kelly Carlson-Reddig
Charlotte, NC
A direct connection between the decaying mill ruins of the NoDa neighborhood in Charlotte, North Carolina forged a new home for community and recreation. A trip through the tendrils of co-working and commerce embraces the idea of architecture as a PALIMPSEST -- a layered taxonomy of attitudes and curiosities of the NoDa region’s social and material culture
INTERIOR PERSPECTIVES
A community center and maker space proposes a series of bridged corridors between the old and the new, connecting occupants from the Light Rail to the existing buildings on-site. Versatile movement through the building is encouraged as one enters from the street level into either the co-working spaces or the open courtyard that is defined by the building. The modern glass enclosures penetrate the airy brick skin of NoDa’s exisiting architecture

Urban bath house iterative development Spring 2018 Thomas Forget
New York City, NY
A compelling chapter of experimental design and provocative mediums such as film culminted in the iterative development of a new urban bath house primarily for New York squatters. Whether it is embedded into the classical “wet wall” bathroom typology, or lodged almost absurdly in the chaos of a New York intersection, the circulation of water and the boundaries between where one eats and where one cleans made for fascinating explorations into a somewhat site-less proposal for a converged kitchen-bath
