MARCH 2012

EDITOR’S NOTE Comics—a

limitless forum for imagination—have enthralled my sensibilities since childhood. Reading comics led to meddling in self-published indie comics. Over the summer of 2011, Typecast offered to publish my first full-length comic after viewing samples of past projects. Despite my nervousness in maintaining Typecast’s high-quality standards, this newest opportunity—to serve as Sawmill’s comics editor—seems the next logical step. With this position, I am presented an opportunity to share my passion with a new audience and hopefully reaffirm others already acquainted with this form of storytelling. With my first enthusiastic yet fumbled steps into editorhood, I knew I wanted to feature work by my partnerin-comic-crime, Megan Stanton. Megan was the first person to inspire me to write my own comics, and shortly after we began working collaboratively. As we continued producing comics together, Megan’s talents progressed. Her ability is quite evident when reading her work, Apology. I knew Sawmill could succeed if Megan allowed me to publish that comic. After drawnout negotiations and a blood-oath, she finally obliged. Although Megan’s work was now acquired, a single submission didn’t make for an entire journal. I still needed to procure more from other artists. Friendly connections provided an introduction to Ken Henson. I was immediately enamored with Henson’s whimsically dark surrealism. His stirring line work, accompanied by cryptic imagery and poetic narration, creates a chilling experience of a dream painted in comic form. Henson’s work was an imaginative force I could not pass up in good conscience. This fortunate introduction lead to another as Ken directed me to another artist, Maureen Fellinger. Her work challenged my own notions of what comics can accomplish. Her minimalism left room for my imagination to wander freely through the work. A deep sincerity appears in Fellinger’s human, concrete, providing a sense of hopefulness that belongs in these pages. Each of the featured artists—wildly different in approach—presents a humble honesty that resonates with my own sentiments regarding comics. I hope you share in some portion of these same joys and discoveries as you make your way through the first comic volume of Sawmill. We’re happy to have you.

2 DREAM by Ken Henson

ARTIST BIOS

Maureen Fellinger is an artist from Cincinnati, OH, who will graduate from the Art Academy of Cincinnati in May 2012 with a B.F.A. in Illustration. She enjoys writing and drawing, so naturally the comic realm reeled her in. In her spare time, Maureen likes to watch bad horror films and play board games. She posts one drawing a day on http://maureenfellinger.wordpress.com and her main website is http://www.maureenfellinger.com

Ken Henson now rides the bus, which in his opinion is not unlike astral travel. After getting off the bus, he enters the Art Academy of Cincinnati, where he teaches people automatic drawing techniques and other methods for achieving deep trance. When he isn’t doing this, Ken can be found in his basement getting his drawing fix to the backdrop of a stellar VHS horror movie collection. Ken has his M.F.A. in Painting from The University of Cincinnati, and his B.F.A. in Painting from Eastern Kentucky University. Awards Ken has won include The Chautauqua Institution Award in the 46th National Exhibition of American Art at The Chautauqua Center for the Visual Arts, NY, and Grand Prize in the All Kentucky Open Art Exhibition, hosted by the Lexington Art League. Ken was a finalist in the 4th Annual Miami University Young Painters’ Competition for the William and Dorothy Yeck Award. Please visit wwww.artistkenhenson.com to see more of Ken’s work, or email him at kenhenson1@gmail.com with any weird information that might challenge his perception of reality.

Megan Stanton is a graduate of the University of Kentucky. She currently resides in Pittsburgh, where she slings coffee for a living and creates art with her remaining time. Apology was exclusively written, drawn, and inked by her, over the Fall of 2010. In Autumn 2012, her collaborative work with author Jake Snider, Scribbleface Chronicles, will be released by Typecast Publishing. When Megan isn’t working on comics, she is probably playing bike polo.
