The TYPE UNITE project is based on typography: words, symbols, signs, and pictures and its main objective is to find a certain unity of minds.

INTRODUCTION TEXT BY AGNIESZKA ZIEMISZEWSKA

Nowadays, thanks to the variety of means of expression, it appears that we can communicate without any limitations. To be precise, the language we use, theoretically, does not constitute a barrier that would prevent the smoothness of our communication. Paradoxically, however, the modern world seems to be increasingly divided both socially and religiously. If we then assume that communication is one of the most important aspects of our survival, we should think about the ways in which this communication can be improved. The TYPE UNITE project is based on typography: words, symbols, signs and pictures and its main objective is to find a certain unity of minds. Students who took part in the project in 2018 come from 10 different countries: China, Denmark, Ecuador, Indonesia, Mexico, Turkey, South Korea, UAE, USA and Poland. Each of these countries uses a different language. Despite this potential obstacle, students identified many common areas to use in their works, which this year reflected on the theme ‘consume’; aspects that are comprehensible beyond languages and cultures. This publication presents a selection of works created by students participating in the TYPE UNITE 2018 project. It also contains professors' statements and serves as a record and a summary of this wonderful project.

The theme of TYPE UNITE 2018 typographic project entitled “Consume” inspires a lot of literature and graphic interpretations from context to visual form. The project itself is an interpretation of the theme … it is a visual consumption, when we all stand in front of these works and look at them. The idea of networking and collaboration between instructors from different universities and the exchange of typographic briefs, projects, assignments and the work on common themes is unique. This cooperation will not only enhance only typography education and practice, but also promote creativity and inter-cultural dialogue.

TEXT BY ARAFAT AL-NAIM

Students were introduced to the topic through a presentation, analyses and discussion of case studies, after that they were requested to conduct a visual research and to define their context, develop concepts and execute their work. The provided students’ creative solutions and visual interpretation of the theme: consume are unique and visually attractive. They highlight all potential concerns of the subject.

The theme of this year's edition of the TYPE UNITE project was the word ‘consume’, but for many students this term was only a starting point for exploration and experimentation, which often lead to surprising, new ideas. The open and dynamic structure of the project enabled us to reflect on current trends and aspirations in contemporary design graphics and typography. We also had the opportunity to look at the variety of methods and many excellent works by students from other countries participating in the project.

TEXT BY AGNIESZKA ZIEMISZEWSKA

A group of students from the Typography Studio at the PolishJapanese Academy of Information Technology in Warsaw, with whom I had the pleasure to work on this project, started their works with questions about the cultural customs in other countries. What students were curious about were the universal issues, common areas, links that they in turn wanted to convey visually. I believe that all students had the chance to discover typography for themselves and to learn that typography has truly become an essential part of our lives.

Her areas of interest are Environmental Graphic Design, Exhibition Design, Architecture, and Typography.

I was interested in Baudrillard's “The Consumer Society” book before I came up with the idea of consumption. Consumption of resources, consumption of human relations, consumption of work force, etc. that I've been thinking about for a long time. Then, I asked myself how can we turn these questions to an international project, and how can we draw more attention? Thus, the first steps of the consumption theme were put forward. While the students are working on the subject, we TEXT BY CEREN ÇALIŞKAN

have not been directed to just aesthetics of design. At the same time, we started to debate how we can transfer the concept of consumption to content into the posters. Some posters would consume themselves. For example, a poster filled with letters. So we have consumed the letters. The most crucial of the questions in our lecture was "Is information consumable?"

Nowadays, the modern technology helps us to carry out joint work among several universities in different countries, through virtual networks of collaboration, which lead us to manage design activities at a distance, breaking cultural and language barriers; interconnecting young designers, with different visions about the common theme: Consume. For the TYPE UNITE activity, a typography

workshop was held in Mexico for the development of the posters; It was attended by young people from the design career of the Faculty of Habitat of the Autonomous University of San Luis Potosi. We worked with the expression of the letter, the use of materials and the manual realization of the pieces, moving away for a while from the possibilities of the computer. This approach with the letter allowed us to generate posters with a different vision to what we normally do with the use of the image as the protagonist of the poster.

Katie Leech is a graphic designer, a fine artist and educator. She is from Chicago but believes Philadelphia is the best place to start her studio, Leech Creative. As a freelancer in Philly she has worked for a health care agency, architecture firms and nonprofit organizations in the arts. She is am currently teaching at Rutgers University-Camden and Moore College of Art & Design As an Artist she is involved with printmaking, which expresses her passion for craft and experimentation. It also overlaps with her interest in typography and typeface design. She earned a BFA in Drawing & Painting from Maryland College Institute of Art, an MEd in Arts Education from DePaul University and an MFA in Graphic Design from Boston University.

Rutgers University–Camden students in the graphic design department embraced the design challenge about Consume. Most of the students focused on consuming products and food. I also suggested that students do a pro and con poster about consumption. After the idea was considered, the challenge was using typography to express their ideas about consumption.

TEXT BY KATIE LEECH

This project was an exploration of hands-on and digital manipulation of type. We started with a playful exploration through collage. Some students continued this process, while others worked on their computers to create their expressive typography. It is exciting to see what students from other university created. This is a great opportunity to collect multiple variations of an idea from students all over the world.

We explore the environment to make criticisms about consumption in several areas. The reflections generated on consumption and its extremes produce multiple ideas represented in graphics, texts, mergers, experiments with photography and creation of letters from the concept. Typographic posters are a sign of the progression and transformation of the design culture. Design students are on the lookout for new reference, which

inspire and connect this projection with a more fluid and therefore spontaneous graphic design. We study postmodernism, with a selection of designers that broke schemes from the spectacular suppression grid of David Carson, Paula Scher's very powerful style, inspired by Art Deco and Russian Constructivism, transgression, innovation and graphic experimentation by Neville Brody, and the guru of design Stefan Sagmeister.

Graphic design, like all art and design areas, is universal. Our Project TYPE UNITE has gave us an opportunity to meet and work together with students and academicians from the universities located in different parts of the World. In 2016, the first event called “TINESTE” organised by four countires (Turkey, Indonesia, Nicaragua, Ecuador) was so delightful and the exhibit we opened was highly admired. Our students who had different graphic design educational background from different countires, did their work with excitement and passion. The second event with eight attendent countries (Turkey, Indonesia, Ecuador, America, Poland, Dubai-

I love providing students with a real-world experience while also building their sense of empowerment to use design to make our world a better place.

United States Endicott College Bevelry, Massachusetts

Since 1994, Tim has been the President and Creative Director at Hiltabiddle Design — a graphic design studio providing a wide variety of corporate communications and marketing solutions, including annual reports, corporate identity, packaging, event marketing, exhibit design, direct mail, and web site design. His clients have included Lego, ESPN, Yale University, R.R. Donnelley, and the Veteran’s Administration. Tim also has worked extensively in the corporate world, including managing the design group at a large technology company. His work has received numerous industry awards and has been recognized in a variety of publications. He has an MFA from Yale University and a BSID from The Ohio State University. Tim’s international design perspective has been influenced by his teachers and mentors, including legendary designers Armin Hoffman, Paul Rand, and Wolfgang Weingart. Tim also co-wrote the book Nice Guys Can Get the Corner Office (published by Penguin Portfolio Press, 2008) which expanded upon an article that he co-wrote for Harvard Business Review. Tim also loves the performing arts and frequently designs posters for local productions while also occasionally performing as an actor on stage. • www.hiltabiddle.com

It has been my privilege to participate in the virtual international student poster design exhibit – TYPE UNITE 2018 — and collaborate with professors from Turkey, Poland, Indonesia, Ecuador, China, South Korea, Mexico, UAE, Denmark, and the United States. I believe it provides an effective way for design students from around the world to connect with each other and perhaps break free from a provincial

educational experience that tends to be the norm. Observing how students from other countries solve the same design problem can be surprising and stimulating for them, thereby broadening their view of the widerange of possibilities for visual communication. I love providing students with a real-world experience while also building their sense of empowerment to use design to make our world a better place.
