9 Ways a Doctor Can Increase Their Social Media ROI Posted by Tyson Downs on 12/24/14 3:11 PM Find me on:

Keep your potential patients engaged on social media by following these nine tips. Facebook. Twitter. Vimeo. Google+. Instagram. Reddit. YouTube. We are living more of our lives online. We share more of what are are passionate about. We give shout outs to our political heroes. To our favorite shoes. We take sweet pics and send them out into cyberspace for all to see. These are intoxicating times; our lives online are exploding.

As a healthcare professional, you know that social media for doctors is pretty important. Not only that, but is is something you need to be part of. But it's easier said than done. There’s a lot of noise out there in cyber land; and it's hard to cut through all that noise and get to your audience. We know that your social media presence plays an ever increasing role in your search engine rankings, so lets talk about 9 ways that a healthcare professional can build an amazingly awesome social media presence, and engage their fans like nothing else.

1. Consider Your Website Design

When someone clicks on your site, it's because they are interested in you or your services and want to learn more. Fabulous. Your goal should be to get them interested enough in you to ideally call you. But if they don't do that, then we'll go for a “like” to one of your social media platforms and hopefully they'll visit again – and again – to share specific content and to participate in your feedback programs. If your website is too busy, throwing out too much competing information simultaneously, you will no doubt turn off your visitors and they take the action you want.

2. Effective Landing Pages Related to point 1, if you are sending your potential patients to a specific page on your site for them after they like your page, then make sure that page has a clear purpose for them, and whatever you do, don't overwhelm them with text. How much text is too much? You have to get your points across, but in as succinct a way as possible. If your landing page looks text heavy, have it rewritten and shoot for removing 50% of your text. Also, you should make sure that you break out what text remains with images and subtitles. Remember, your social media fans can be quite fickle; they are more likely, over time, to respond to a clean landing page with an uncomplicated targeted message directed at them.

3. Engage!

Interactivity is key. The typical social media fan wants to see interesting stuff posted. So post interesting stuff! Posting boring drible just doesn't do it. Try this experiment. Review your website of your healthcare practice as if you were a new visitor to it. Do you see one beyond obvious activity that you want visitors to engage in? If you see more than one, you may be doing too much. If you don’t see one, rethink your approach.

4. Use a Contest Using simple social media contests to build up your online presence is one of the more effective ways to build your following. Make sure that your contest is easy to understand and that yields a worthy prize. If you are a plastic surgeon, for example, you may give out a free consultation for your current patients to give to their friends who have showed interest in plastic surgery. Of course, your current patients should earn a referral of some sort for being generous of spirit.

5. Rinse, Wash, Repeat Repeat your successful contest efforts. Don't think that you have to come up with something new and different every time. What would you be passionate about providing your patients with? You can build up a loyal base of social media fans if you regularly offer them something they want.

6. Follow Industry Leaders Keep your head in the game. Don't think that you have to come up with all the content yourself. Know that there are expert bloggers out there who are continually sorting out what works in building up a base of loyal social media fans and then sharing what they have found. Sign up for a few choice blogger newsletters or bookmark them. When an idea really grabs you, use it. Of course look for blogs and social media accounts for industry related profiles so that the updates and content you share is relevant to your audience.

7. Be Local Link to your immediate community. Social media fans love to hear about what is going on in their own communities. Healthcare professionals almost always serve a specific local area, so post about how you get involved in community events. Doing so will bring you some local buzz, getting your content shared to a wider group of people.

8. Be Authentic Do not post because it is time to post. Post because you have something to say, and you have thought about how to say it in way that is not boring. Really think about each and every post you make; overtime, you’ll build up a log of passionate and clever posts that deserve a read.

9. Be Visual Share images of your office, and of your communicating. When you use images you'll get a higher engagement rate, and develop a more loyal following. These 9 steps toward a better relationship with your base of social media fans. Keep it simple and be creative. You’ll see fewer of your social media fans abandon you, and more and more engage and become loyal followers, loyal patients, and refer more new patients.
