SPORTS Intersurface has been involved in the design, construction, supply and installation of an extensive range of indoor and outdoor sports surfaces since 1996. Indoor sports surfaces include synthetic surfaces for badminton courts, basketball courts (IBF & FIBA approved) and prefabricated synthetic surfaces for gymnasiums. Outdoor sports surfaces include synthetic surfaces for running tracks (IAAF approved), EPDM safety surface for children’s playground (BS tested), synthetic surfaces for long and triple jump runways (IAAF approved) and cushioned and porous surfaces for game courts. It has been involved in a number of notable projects both locally and abroad.
Trends In Flooring For Basketball Courts Parquet flooring is less popular nowadays because it has no shock absorption as it is laid directly onto the substrate. Standards applicable in the construction of basketball flooring include specifications for timber suspended flooring and seamless PU flooring. In general, more indoor sports surfaces should be constructed in Singapore, particularly for basketball courts. During the rainy season, basketball training sessions cannot be held if the schools have no indoor halls to cater for the game. Presently, there are a fair number of schools in Singapore without indoor facilities for basketball. A seamless PU floor can easily last for more than 10 years. The Anglo Chinese School indoor sports surface is already 10 years old and conditions indicate that it is another 10 more years of service based on Intersurface’s assessment. In the past, the sports surface at the old American school in St George Rd lasted 15 years and was in good condition even before the school was demolished. Intersurface has also done a fair number of projects based on EPDM surfaces (PG) for children. 200-300 projects for its ‘SOFTFALL’ products have been completed in the past few years.
Extensive Product Range Intersurface supplies an extensive range of products which includes the following: 46 draw&dish Feb’06
• PU Surface ‘Pulastic 2000’ is a truly multiple purpose surface, allowing multi-game usages as well as multi purposes use besides sports ie: as examination hall, exhibition area floorings etc. This seamless PU flooring absorb noise and vibration better. Comfort level is another factor. A PU floor offers much better comfort than timber or vinyl floor for the users. It is a ‘point elastic’ surface. ‘Pulastic’ flooring has FIBA certification as a basketball competition court surface. • Prefabricated Synthetic Surface The prefabricated synthetic surface is a vinyl sports surface with a closed cells cushioned backing system. It has a maple effect surface and the advantages of using the maple effect sports vinyl floors as compared to ‘air - thrust’ maple floors are as follows: • Less maintenance is required for maple effect sports vinyl floors compared to maple floors. • Not affected by termites or any water related problems. • Provide ‘point’ absorption compared to ‘area-matic’ absorption for ‘air - thrust’ floors. • Better sound absorption compared to timber flooring. • Environmentally friendly.

Natural POROUS PEBBLE SURFACE
’Porousway’ is a water permeable flooring supplied by Intersurface that is suitable for surfaces such as walkways, rooftops and driveways. The instant drip dry (IDD) surface is self-draining, keeping the top surface ‘always dry’. The flooring surface consists of natural stones of different colours and different designs and patterns can be created. The completed surface is without groove or joint lines (unlike tiles) and causes no peeling problems for easy maintenance. It has good anti-slip properties (tested by PSB) which helps to prevent nasty falls. The product can also be sold in self assembled form. The patent pending design allows the
floor to be in interlockable and portable form for easy transportation, storage, installation and removable.
locker room areas, walkways, swimming pools and toilets.
Cools The Surroundings
Other benefits of ‘Porousway’ surfaces as compared to ‘wash pebbles’ and tiles include leaving behind no cement stains, no requirement for expansion joints and minimised algae growth as water is kept below the surface. There are also no cover substrate crack problems. ‘Wash pebbles’ and tiles are slippery when wet but ‘Porousway’ has good antislip properties and is a ‘breathable’ surface. It offers more design possibilities and concealed drainage (if required).
Another unique feature of ‘Porousway’ is its cooling effect to the surrounding area. A certain amount of water is trapped 4 mm to 5 mm below the surface due to the surface tension properties of water. During hot weather, this porosity feature works in reverse direction by allowing this trapped water to evaporate (at any time), taking away the heat with it and thus cooling the surroundings. It is an ideal surface for tropical weather conditions, where there is much rain and sunshine throughout the year.
Natural Feeling
Seamless pebble surfaces give an aesthetic appearance which exudes a warm and natural feeling. This is further enhanced with a ‘cooling effect’, better ‘look’ and no unsightly water ponding. ‘Porousway’ is always dry at the top surface, seamless, levelled, long lasting and water absorbent. It can simply be laid over and permanently cast in place with a ‘cast-in-situ’ system that allows odd corners to be done. Typical application areas include roof top gardens,
