Op.1000130 COMPRESSIONTEST

Incaseofpoorengineperformance,inadditionto checkingthefuelinjectionsystem(injectionnozzles andinjectionpump),alsotestthecompressionon eachcylinder.

DANGER

Donotusematches,lighters,blowtorchesorany formofnakedflameasasourceoflightwheninspectingtheengineduetothepresenceofinflammablefluidsandvapour.

Compressionratio

Thecompressionratioisameasureofthequantity ofairdrawnintothecylinder,andprovidesanindicationoftheefficiencyofthesealingelementsinthe cylinder(pistonringsandvalves).

Uniformcompressioninallthecylindersensuresthat theyallperformanequalamountofwork,provided thateachcylinderisinjectedwiththesamequantity offuelattherighttime.

Lowcompressionnotonlyreducesengineperformance,italsocausesincompletefuelcombustiondue tothelackofavailablecombustionair.

Theenginethereforegivespoorperformancewith excessivefuelconsumptionand,consequently,exhaustsmokeandrestrictionoftheexhaustpassages.

Asthecompressionratio alsovarieswiththetemperatureoftheengine (coldenginesproducelower compressionvaluesthanhotengines),thecompressionshouldonlybetestedwhentheengineisatnormaloperatingtemperature.

Compressionshouldbetestedusingthecompressiontestkit 291309, asfollows:

1)runtheengineuntilitreachesnormaloperating temperature;

2)switchofftheengine;

3)disconnecttheleadfromtheenginestopelectromagnetontheinjectionpumpinordertoclosethe valve,andblocktheflowoffueltotheinjectors;

4)removetheinjectorfromthecylindertobetested;

5)turntheengineoverafewtimeswiththestarter motorinordertoexpelanycarbonresidue;

6)fitthedummyinjector 293862 inplaceoftheinjectorremovedpreviously,interposingthecoppersealingwasher;

7)connectthecompressiontestinstrument 291309 andtakereadingswhileturningtheengineoverwith thestartermotor.

Onenginesinperfectworkingorder,withthesump oilatapprox.40 oC(104 oF)atsealevel(760mm, 29.9212in.,mercury)andatanenginespeedof200 to280rpm,thecompressionshouldbe25.5to27.5 bar(369.8to398.8psi).

8)Testthecompressionontheothercylinders,repeatingsteps4--5--6--7,bearinginmindthat:

Theminimumpermissiblecompressiononaused engineis21.6bar(313.2psi).

Themaximumpermissiblecompressiondifference betweencylindersis3bar(43.5psi).

Every100meters(109.36yards)abovesealevel correspondstoareductionincompressionbyapprox.1%.

CONSIDERATIONS: Uniformcompression

Althoughhighcompressionisimportant,itismore importantforsmoothenginerunningthatcompressionisuniforminallcylinders.
