Camtasia 9 Manual Camtasia is an application that allows you to easily capture everything on your computer screen, edit it, and produce a polished video clip. You can also record and produce audio files. You can even add audio to a PowerPoint presentation and produce this enhanced presentation as video. You can then upload these files into Ensemble Video (or another video source, such as YouTube) and link it into your Blackboard online course.
Getting Started Get your computer ready for recording Camtasia video o System Requirements – Microsoft Windows 7 SP1, Windows 8, and Windows 10 (Required: 64 Bit versions only) – 2.0 GHz CPU with dual-core processor minimum (Recommended: Quad-core i5 processor or better) – 4 GB RAM minimum (Recommended: 8 GB or more) – 2 GB of hard-disk space for program installation – Display dimensions of 1024x768 or greater – Microsoft .NET 4.6.0 or later version (included) – Dedicated Windows-compatible sound card, microphone, and speakers (Recommended) – Windows N requires the MediaFeature Pack for Windows N o Other Equipment Requirements – Sound card, speakers and a microphone (if you want to record sound with the video, a USB Microphone is recommended because it uses less resources and record better quality audio) – Web camera to record video of yourself – Powerpoint Import and Camtasia Add-in for PowerPoint require PowerPoint 2010, 2013, 2016 (32-bit or 64-bit) – Playback using the Smart Player is supported on Internet Explorer 11+, Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari 9+, iOS 9+, Android 4+ (Latest Chrome required) 1

– GPU acceleration requires DirectX compatible video adapter with 128 MB of video memory or greater and Pixel Shader 4.0 or later o Maximizing your computer resources – A full shut down and start up can help maximize your PC’s resources for recording – Close the programs that you will not use during the recording – Launch the application that you are going to use for the recording (e.g. Excel, MS Word, or other applications ) Write an outline or script for your recording to save time and avoid mistakes.

Camtasia Studio 9 Welcome Window The Welcome Window introduces you to Camtasia. You can start a recording or project by clicking any of the choices.
 To launch the recorder: a. Click New Recording  To continue with a Camtasia project you worked on before a. Select the project from the Recent Projects list.

 Important Note: Camtasia File location a. Camtasia creates a default folder in My Documents on your computer when installing the software. By default, it will save all the Camtasia files at that location unless you select another folder. You can choose not to see the Welcome Window by clearing the check box for Show on launch, and starting Camtasia Studio directly.

Timeline
Timeline Basics The timeline displays the sequence of all media in a video. Use the timeline to assemble a video. To add content to a video, drag media from the Media Bin or Library onto the timeline. Everything that appears at one point vertically on the timeline in the video, audio, or assets on each track will appear in the video at that point. The playhead represents a point of time in the video. Icon
Description Undo – Will undo the last action in succession Redo – Will redo the last action in succession Cut Selection – Cuts a selection from the timeline and copies it to the Clipboard Copy – Copies the selection or element to the Clipboard Paste – Pastes the contents of the Clipboard on the timeline Split – Splits a clip at the position of the playhead Bring all media in timeline into view Zoom out – Zooms out on the timeline Zoom in – Zooms in on the timeline Zoom Slider – Zooms in or out on the timeline.

Timeline Play Head Icon
Description Green Playhead (In point): Drag the green playhead to any place on the timeline to start the selection. Red Playhead (Out point): Drag the red playhead to a point on the timeline to end the selection. Gray Playhead: Double-click the gray playhead to bring the two points together.
Separate Audio and Video All the video clips and PowerPoint recording files are linked with their audio tracks. If you want to separate the audio from the video, so you can edit one separate from the other, right-click the track, and then click Separate Audio and Video.
Timeline Track Lock When you edit your video project, especially when cutting video, you may want to protect other tracks such as background music. You can lock a track so any information on that track will be protected while editing other tracks. To lock a track, click the lock button for that track. To unlock a track, click the unlock button for that track.

Recording Screen Activities To record screen activities with audio narration, click the New Recording button on the Welcome window or the Record button below the menu bar to bring up the Recorder.
1. Select Screen capture area. – Full screen (Default). There are green dash lines along the outside border of the screen to indicate the area to be recorded. – Customized screen size a. Click Custom, click the Select button, and then choose the area you want to record. b. Click the drop-down arrow for the Custom settings, to view the preset list. c. Select the dimensions you want for your video. d. If a portion of the area you want to record is cut off, you can resize the recording window to make sure that all parts of the application you want to record are visible. e. Click the lock button for the Dimensions to lock the aspect ratio of the width and heights. This allows to the aspect ratio of your recording area to stay intact when you produce your final video. It will give you a great result. 2. Select a microphone and adjust the audio settings. – Microphone audio is recorded by default. • If you want to turn the audio input off, click the Audio on button. It will change to “Audio off.” – System audio is recorded by default. – Click the drop-down arrow/menu next to the Audio setting. a. Clear the check box for Record system audio so that system audio cues are not recorded. 8

b. Select one of the audio input sources (You may have more than one microphone if you have a microphone and a Webcam. In this example, there are three microphones.) c. Start talking and observe the Input Level of the audio. 3. Open the application you want to record (e.g. Microsoft Word, Excel, Google Maps) – You need to open the application you will use for this recording at this point or earlier, unless you want to teach how to find and open the program. 4. Start recording a. Click the “rec” button or press the “F9” key on the computer keyboard to start recording. b. A timer will count down for 3 seconds, and then the recording will start. 5. Pause or Stop recording – Click the “Pause” or “Stop” button on the Camtasia Recorder.
– Or use the Hot keys to pause or stop the recording Press the “F9” key to pause the recording. Press “F9” again to resume recording Press the “F10” key to stop recording. 6. Preview and Edit the recorded clip in Camtasia Studio. a. As soon as you stop the recording, the clip you have just recorded will be automatically saved in your Documents\Camtasia Studio folder. b. The file will be saved with the file extension .trec. The file will be automatically put in the Media Bin in the Studio, and also placed in the Timeline and ready for editing. c. After reviewing the recorded clip in your project, you can edit it in Camtasia Studio. 9

Note: The recorded file will be saved in the Camtasia Studio folder in My Documents. The saved file has the file extension .trec. This is not a regular video file. It has to be produced to the file format of your choice in Camtasia Studio.
Using Hot Keys for Computer Screen Activities Recording Default Hot Keys

Recording PowerPoint The Camtasia PowerPoint Add-In allows you to record a presentation in Microsoft PowerPoint 1. Open a PowerPoint File – Find the PowerPoint file that you want to record audio for and open it. 2. Enable Camtasia Recorder – Click the Add-Ins tab on the PowerPoint ribbon. You should see the Toolbar as the screen capture shows below.
Note: If you do not see the Add-ins Toolbar, contact Technology Services and let them know you are working with the Camtasia 9 application.

– This following table explains the function of each of the buttons on the Add-Ins Toolbar. Buttons
Function Record – Click this button to start recording your PowerPoint presentation. Microphone – Select this to record audio with a microphone along with your presentation. Camera – Select this to record an additional video feed with a camera. Camera Preview – Click this button to preview what the webcam will record, so you can adjust the camera position or lighting, if necessary. Recording Options- Click this button to bring up the Options window so that you can adjust the recording settings. NOTE: These settings are separate from the settings in the Camtasia application. Make sure you check and adjust these before recording a presentation with the add-in.

3. Record a PowerPoint presentation with audio – Click the red Record button on the Add-In Toolbars. You will see the PowerPoint recording is in the Pause state. This is a default setting. You may change it in the Recording Options window. We suggest that you use this default setting because it allows you check if your audio is working and adjust the volume level. It also reminds you of the hot keys for your setting.
– Click “Click to begin recording” or press Ctrl +Shift + F9 to start recording. – You can record your audio for each slide. Speak and click the PowerPoint slides as you normally do in the classroom using this PowerPoint presentation. – Press the ESC key to stop the recording. Camtasia will ask if you want to stop recording or continue. If you stop recording, Camtasia prompts you to save your recording. – When you are done with the recording, Camtasia will ask if you want to produce or edit your recording.

Editing Recorded PowerPoint Presentations When you click the Edit your recording button, Camtasia automatically puts your recording in the Camtasia Studio Media Bin. 1. Add the media file to the Timeline. a. Drag the media file from the Media Bin to the Timeline. b. The video and audio will be combined on one track. If you want to separate them into two tracks, right-click the track and then click Separate Audio and Video. • If you have more than one video or audio source, be sure to which each is connected.

2. Adjust the Preview Window view. b. Click the Preview Window scale to choose your viewing preference, toggle between Fit (which resizes the image to fit in the window) or view it in 100 % scale.
3. Save the project. c. You need to save the project at this point. The Camtasia project will be saved with the extension of .tscproj. d. Note: The tscproj file is different from the recording file, which has the extension of .trec. The tscproj file holds all the references to the media files used in the project. When you edit your recording file, the trec file won’t be changed; all the changes are saved in the tscproj file. 15

4. Enhance audio of the PowerPoint presentation recording. e. Click Audio Effects, on the Tools Panel, to access the audio tools.  To apply an audio tool to a clip, drag the tool to the clip. f. The properties for the audio tools will appear to the right of the preview window. Adjust each tool as necessary and listen to the results in the clip. g. The Noise Removal tool removes unwanted or background noises. h. The Volume Leveling tool evens out the differences in volume in the clip. i. The Fade In and Fade Out tools will fade the volume in from or out to silence. j. The clip speed will adjust the speed of the specific clip. k. When working with multiple audio tracks, be sure to apply the proper tools to all audio tracks that need adjustment.

5. Work with the Markers on the Timeline in the PowerPoint presentation recording. Note: When the PowerPoint presentation recording is added to the Timeline, Camtasia automatically creates a marker for each slide. These markers are very useful. They indicate when a new slide begins. The markers on the Timeline are needed if you want to create a table of contents for your presentation, which allows students quickly navigate the slides and access the specific content quickly. However, the Table of Contents is only supported when producing the video with the Smart Player. This is not used when uploading your videos to Ensemble Video or other video sites.
l. You can manually add markers on the Timeline. Point at the Timeline until a line with a plus (+) sign appears. Click there to add a marker. m. You can split all slides into separate clips, to rearrange the slides. Click Modify > Point to Markers > Click Split at All Markers. Now each slide in the presentation is a separate clip. You can move the slides around and insert additional information or transitions between each slide. n. Right-click a marker, and then click Rename, to change the name of the marker. o. Remove a marker by clicking the marker and pressing the DELETE key on the computer keyboard.

6. Produce a PowerPoint presentation video. a. Click Share on the menu bar or in the top right corner of the window. b. Click Local File.
c. d. Click the drop-down menu. e. Select one of the MP4 only options if producing a video for Ensemble Video. • You can select an MP4 – Smart Player (HTML5) option if you want to create a Table of Contents for your PowerPoint presentation video. However, this is not supported in Ensemble Video, which is where instructors should upload all of their personal instructional videos. f. Click Next. • Camtasia will tell you that the MP4-only format does not support a Table of Contents. Click OK.

g. Name the production. h. Click the folder button and browse to the location to which you want to save the production. i. Clear the check box for Organize produced files into sub-folders (except in the unlikely event you are using the Smart Player option). j. Click Finish. Camtasia will begin rendering the project k. Click Finish on the Production Results window. Your default video software will play a preview of the finished product.

Recording Voice Narration You can use the Voice Narration option to record a new audio track on the timeline while playing back video. You can also use it to record an audio only presentation. 1. Click the Voice Narration tab to open the audio recording window.

2. Select the audio device from the drop-down menu. To test the audio level, speak as you would during the recording, watching the green bar to determine your audio level. Drag the slider to adjust the audio level. You should aim for a level that produces the most green without “clipping” into the yellow or red on the right side at all.
3. Click the Start Voice Recording button. 4. Click the Stop button after you finish your recording. The Save Narration Dialog box pops up. We suggest that you save the file in the Camtasia Studio folder so your media files are all together. o The file saves as an M4A file. 5. Listen to your audio recording by clicking the Play button on the Preview Window. 6. Click the Media tab, when you are satisfied with your audio recording. You will see your audio file in the Media Bin. 7. You may want to save this clip in the library for future use. a. Right click the audio clip. b. Click Add to Library. 8. Adjust the audio as needed. (See Editing Videos below, for details.) a. Click Audio Effects on the sidebar. b. Drag the effect you want on the audio clip that you want to alter on the Timeline. c. You can adjust some audio effects using the green line and dot on the audio file. d. You can adjust the gain and some of the audio effects from the options to the right of the preview window. 9. Produce the clip using the Share menu, and Local File. a. Choose Custom production settings from the drop-down menu, and then click Next. b. Click the option button for M4A – audio only, and then click Next. 21

c. We recommend leaving the default Bit rate for the audio, and then click Next. d. Choose a name and folder for the produced file, as above with the PowerPoint presentation.

Importing Media Import preexisting videos, images, and audio files to use as source clips in your current Camtasia project. 1. In the Media Bin right–click in the space or click the + button, then click Import Media‌ to import files such as video, graphics, photos, and audio files to the Media Bin.
2. Drag the video or graphics files from the Media Bin to a track on the Timeline and/or drag the audio/music files to a different track on the Timeline. 3. Play the media in the Preview Window.

Editing Videos Enhance the Audio with Audio Effects Volume Leveling a. Drag the Volume Leveling tool on to the audio clip you want to change. b. Change the settings in the panel to the right of the preview window. c. Be aware that the volume leveling occurs immediately. Noise Removal o Automatically try to detect and remove background noise on the Timeline The default setting of this is automatically remove background noise. However, you can choose manually remove noise in the setting (see below). Click the Analyze button. o Manually select a region of audio with noise but no voice narration Select the part of the audio, from which you want to remove the noise, on the Timeline Click the Noise Removal effect. Adjust the Sensitivity by moving that slider Adjust the Amount of noise removal by adjusting that slider. Listen to the changes in the audio in the Preview Window. You can revert changes by deleting the effects from the audio clip. Be sure to save the changes to the project.

Add Zoom-n-Pan Animation To create a zoom or pan animation: 1. Move the playhead to the point in the timeline where you want to create the effect. 2. Click the Animations tab on the sidebar. 3. Click the Zoom-n-Pan tab. 4. Use the handles to zoom in (or out) or to pan to a specific location on the image. 5. Camtasia adds an arrow to the timeline for each zoom/pan animation. You can change the length of the zoom or pan by dragging one or both ends of the arrow on the timeline.
To delete a Zoom /Pan:  To delete a zoom or pan, use one of the following two methods: o Select the zoom/pan animation arrow on the Timeline, and then press the DELETE key on the keyboard. o Right click the zoom/pan animation arrow on the Timeline, and then click Delete.

Add Annotations: Use graphics to draw attention to details on your video You can use an annotation to add content or call attention to a part of the screen Create an Annotation: 1. Click Annotations on the Tools Panel
2. Select the type of annotation: Callouts Arrows & Lines Shapes Blur & Highlight Sketch Motion Keystroke Callouts 3. Drag the annotation to the Timeline. Edit Annotations: 1. Click the annotation in the timeline 2. Drag one of the ends of the annotation on the timeline to adjust its duration. 3. The annotation also appears in the Preview window. You can drag the annotation to the desired location in the Preview window or change the size of the annotation by dragging its handles (the dots that appear when you select it). 26

Delete Annotations: o To delete an annotation, right-click the annotation on the Timeline, and then click Delete. Add Transitions 1. Click Transitions on the Tools Panel. A list of various visual effects for frame transition will appear. 2. Point to a transition and Camtasia will show you a small preview of the transition. 3. Drag a transition you like to the point between two clips on the Timeline (the double-arrow cursor should appear). 4. Review the video in the preview window after you choose all your transitions between the images. 5. Save the changes to the project. Delete Transitions: o Select the transition on the Timeline and press the DELETE key o OR Right-click the transition on the Timeline and click Delete. Important Note: You should lock the audio track on the Timeline before adding transitions. If any of the audio tracks are unlocked the audio will be cut into pieces after you add the transitions. If possible, add the transitions for your images before adding the audio, to avoid chopping up the audio. The only way to fix chopped audio clips is to move them together or get rid of the chopped audio and put the original back in the Timeline. 27

Add captions (Use caption for hearing-impaired people for ADA compliance or for international audiences) IMPORTANT NOTE: Faculty should load their videos in Ensemble Video, where there is an auto caption function in the server that they can use instead of this feature. Camtasia Studio 9 includes an ADA compliancy mode. By default all the closed captions are set to ADA compliance in the produced videos, which includes font size, caption alignment, and the number of words per line. To create closed captions: 1. Open your video. 2. Click Captions on the Tools Panel. 3. Drag the Timeline Playhead to (or click) the point on the Timeline where you want to place the caption. 4. Click Add Caption. 5. Type or Paste the text for the caption in the text box at the bottom of the Preview Window. 6. Select the next point that needs a caption on the Timeline and click Add Caption to create the caption for the next section. o Captions are limited to 3 lines. You can increase the characters per line. The default setting is 32 characters per line. o If you increase the characters per line, the text font size will decrease. 28

o Caption positions: – The On Video button is toggled between Over video and Under video. The default location is Over video, If you want to place the text below the video, click On video You can also manually sync your captions with the audio, after you have completed the captions. 1. Click the Options (gear) button for Captions. 2. Click Sync captions. 3. Camtasia will show you instructions on how to use Sync captions. Click Continue. 4. Choose where to begin: o Click Start at playhead to begin at the current location of the playhead in the video. o Click Start at beginning to begin at the start of the video. 5. Click the word when you hear it in the audio narration for a frame to sync the audio script with the audio. 6. Repeat the process until the end of the audio. Delete a Caption:  Right-click the caption on the Timeline and click Delete.

Producing Videos After you have recorded and edited your video, and made any post-production changes (zooms, callouts, audio) you will need to produce the video into a format that you can share. To accomplish this, you need to take the following steps: 1. Click Share, on the menu bar. 2. Choose the Local File option. 3. Choose the production settings: o For video, choose MP4 options (either standard or HD).  Do not choose the Smart Player options, if you are uploading the video file to Ensemble Video. o For audio, choose the Custom production settings option, click Next, and then click the option (or radio) button for M4A (audio only). Then click Next again.  In the screen that follows, use the default selections for bit rate. 4. Click Next. 5. Name the production file. 6. Select the folder in which the file will be created. 7. Clear the check box for Organize produced files into sub-folders, if you are not using one of the Smart Player options. 8. Click Finish. Camtasia will start rendering the project. 9. Click Finish in the Production Results dialog box (unless you cleared the Show Production Results check box). The video or audio file will preview in your default media player for that type.
