GREETINGS!

You are holding in your hands the first annual report of the University of Arkansas – Fort Smith Foundation. We have created and published Impact UAFS, Annual Report 2017 for several reasons. First, we want to celebrate the generous spirit of our donors. Almost every time we ask people why they give, they say they want to give back. Some know they were able to attend college because of a scholarship, and they want to pay that blessing forward. Some never had the chance to go to college, and they want to make things easier for a new generation. Some remember with great fondness the excellent minds they encountered among their instructors, and they want to help develop today’s faculty. Whatever their reasons, their gifts are fundamental to the things our university achieves. Our second purpose is to demonstrate how gifts have impacted our university. Every gift is like a pebble thrown into a pond: The pebble makes an immediate splash, but the ripples that spread out from the center change the entire surface of the pond. So it is with gifts. We cannot demonstrate — we don’t even know — all the effects a gift will have, but the ones we see are amazing. Finally, we bring you this publication in the interest of transparency. We recognize the great trust our supporters have in the university. By sharing with you details about the financial standing of the UAFS Foundation, Inc., and about the lives the Foundation impacts, we hope to demonstrate our sound management of resources to benefit our students. Earlier this year UAFS released a study that showed the university has an annual impact of $300 million on the greater Fort Smith region. At the Foundation we are proud of that and proud of our part in it, but in the end we believe our greatest impact will come from the students who leave our campus armed with the tools they need to succeed in their careers and improve their communities. We couldn’t do what we do without your ongoing support, and we can never say thank you enough for all you do. Please let us know what you think about our annual report.

Mary Bane Lackie, Ed.D. Executive Director UAFS Foundation

JUDY McREYNOLDS

As chairman of the UAFS Foundation Board of Directors, I am proud to present Impact UAFS, our first annual report and donor roll. In it you will learn about the Foundation, the amazing people who support it, and the wonderful impact it has on students and our community. As a member of the board since 2011, I know how hard Foundation board members work to advance the university. I have seen a satisfying growth in resources in these six years, but a longer view shows something even more impressive. At its start in 1987, the Foundation had assets of $85,000. Just 30 years later, that number is more than 1,000 times as much: $86.3 million as of June 30. I am proud to be part of the Foundation board because I am proud of our university. At ArcBest we know that many of the young leaders who will advance our company and our region are being educated right here in Fort Smith. Students come to us as interns while they are still in college, and we see how hard they work and how much they know. If we offer them full-time positions after graduation, it’s a true win-win. ArcBest is not the only company that looks to UAFS for help educating its workforce. OK Foods, First National Bank, Nestle, and many others look to the university for graduates in a variety of majors and for training with new equipment or new processes. I invite you to take a look at this report to learn about the Foundation. Through the philanthropic actions of our neighbors and friends, great things are happening every day. I hope you’re part of the Foundation’s impact.

DR. PAUL BERAN Looking through Impact UAFS, I am reminded of the impact of the University of Arkansas – Fort Smith Foundation. Although we have been a university for just 15 years, we have the third largest Foundation among public universities in the state. In fact, UAFS Foundation funded more than $3 million in 2017 for scholarships and to support the university’s mission. This financial assistance is incredibly important for our students since well over 50 percent of our students are the first in their families to attend college. We know that a college degree will be life changing for these students. In fact, first generation graduates will positively impact their families and their communities for generations to come. We also know, however, that these students are at greater risk for failure to complete their degrees. Life’s emergencies arise, and an unexpected medical bill or car repair can be the difference between continuing in college and dropping out. A healthy Foundation, committed to serving the students of the institution it is tasked to help, is able to make things a little easier through scholarships and emergency grants because of our stalwart supporters and donors. The Foundation also helps with faculty development so we can keep our pledge to students to provide them the best instruction while they attend the most affordable public university in the state. In these pages you will see an overview of the Foundation’s resources. You will also have a chance to meet some of the people whose lives were impacted by the philanthropy of the many donors who support the work of the University of Arkansas – Fort Smith. Support given through the UAFS Foundation is critical to our success in achieving the initiatives UAFS outlined as part of our new five-year strategic plan: increasing enrollment; retaining and graduating students; championing the professional development of our faculty and staff; being recognized as the thought leader in workforce education. We can do none of these without the final priority: aligning resources to support university objectives. To achieve that goal, UAFS counts on the UAFS Foundation for its unwavering support.

LESSON LEARNED: PAY IT FORWARD

When Jeremy May, ’07, started school in January of 2004, he had enough money saved to complete one semester. After that he didn’t know what would happen. It wasn’t until his second semester that he was connected to financial aid, and even then he didn’t completely understand where scholarships came from. That was before Donnie Pendergrass. The 2004 G.C. Hardin Luncheon in December proved he was a quick study. May’s day started with a case of nerves. An hour before he was scheduled to speak, he’d been kicked out of his English class when his cell phone rang. No matter that it was Chancellor Joel Stubblefield calling, the class rules were firm. He was worried that his first attempt at a speech had been rejected. And he felt uncomfortable: Not owning anything appropriate, he was wearing a second-hand suit he’d purchased for $25 in a resale shop. Nevertheless, speaking from the heart, he moved people to tears. That’s when it hit him. “I understood scholarships then,” he said. “Not having the money for school, I couldn’t believe that someone would help me pay for college. They were so generous. … I was blown away that there were 300 people who were all that generous. At the end of the event, I stood at the door, and I hugged every lady and shook hands with every man – and hugged some of them who were huggers, too.” At that time and during his sophomore year, he was on the Paul Latture Memorial Scholarship, which had been put together by Sam M. Sicard, Stubblefield, and Donnie Pendergraft’s late husband Ross. In his junior and senior years he was on the Ross Pendergraft Scholarship. That day was the first time May met Mrs. Pendergraft and her son Neal. May also remembers his emotional first lunch with Mrs. Pendergraft. “We sat there and cried and cried,” he said, recounting their conversation about how he reminded Donnie of Ross and of the things Jeremy had in common with him. Over time their relationship grew, and it planted a seed in him to embrace philanthropy when he was able. Now May is lead marketing analyst with special projects responsibilities at ArcBest. He is vice president of the Riverview Hope Campus board of directors and a member of the UAFS Alumni Advisory Council. He is a member of the UAFS College of Business Ambassadors and a young alumni mentor in the Mentor Connections program.

8

He says he has already exceeded many of his life goals thanks to the opportunities and education he received at UAFS. Not only did the opportunity to earn a degree at UAFS drastically change May’s career path, but it also shaped his life in another very important way – he met his wife Sarah Barnes May, ’07, while they were both students at UAFS. Perhaps one of the most significant lessons they learned along the way was the importance of giving back. It is said that “Of those to whom much is given, much is required.” Jeremy and Sarah are living that wisdom. As loyal donors and Chancellor’s Society members, through their philanthropy they now support their alma mater. The seed that was planted many years ago by a generous donor is sprouting in beautiful ways today. “I want to help Fort Smith become the kind of city that will provide rich opportunities for my children, so that when they are old enough they will decided there is so much to do and experience that they will stay here,” May said. Family, Fort Smith, and paying it forward are lessons he learned from Mrs. Pendergraft and 299 other donors, 13 years ago.

FAMILY BONDS

Ask Men’s Basketball Coach Josh Newman what Sharon and Mike mean to him, and his answer is “family.” This love affair is mutual. Sharon and Mike met at Westark Community College in 1975 when they were in choir together and married in 1977. After they graduated – he in ‘77 and she in ‘78 – they both worked at the college. Sharon racked up 15 years in two installments, and Mike rounds his service up to “most of 40 years.” The university always was more than a place to work for them; it was home. They attended events like the concerts on the Green. They helped out at Season of Entertainment and the Miss Westark pageant. Then there were the basketball games. Mike and Sharon first attended a basketball game at the urging of Sharon’s coworker, Rita Newman, the coach’s wife. “She said, ‘You’ve got to come to a game,’” Sharon explained. “And we loved it. We loved the kids; we loved the coaches.” They became committed fans, attending all the men’s basketball games they could. Sharon says they still keep up with some of the players on Facebook.

12

The couple were early financial supporters of the university, starting with the brick program and payroll deduction. When Sharon inherited some money from her father, it was no surprise they endowed the Michael and Sharon Daniels Men’s Basketball Scholarship Endowment. Later, when Coach Newman asked them to consider a gift to remodel the men’s locker room in the Stubblefield Center, they immediately agreed. Newman says Sharon and Mike Daniels are “amazing supporters” of the basketball program, but it’s not the money that matters most. “We can always count on Mike and Sharon waiting outside the tunnel prior to tip-off to wish the guys good luck and more importantly give hugs and high fives!” he said. “And it’s not just the players. Before every game I find myself glancing to their seats to see if they have arrived yet.” Recently the couple has branched out to baseball because Sharon’s nephew Brennan Dooly is on the team. In recognition of their philanthropic support of the baseball program, Sharon and Mike were invited to throw out the first pitch in a game last spring. Mike deferred the honor to Sharon, who said she loved it. Mike described the university and his connection to it this way: “It’s changed so much; it’s progressed. It keeps re-inventing itself. I was just the mailman, but it was just kind of nice to be able to do something to feel like you helped. Maybe you didn’t teach the kids or train them in any way, but you helped further the mission. It just means a lot.”

ART HISTORIAN DIVES INTO SPAIN Dr. Mary Shepard’s summer trip to Spain changed the way she plans to teach. Shepard, an art historian in the College of Communication, Languages, Arts, and Social Sciences, had the opportunity to make her trip because of the Lucille Speakman Legacy Endowment, which paid a stipend for her travel.

The trip offered her “a wonderful opportunity to dig deeply into sites that I teach but never visited,” she said. “You don’t really know how things fit together until you are there. You walk and you see how the different parts fit together. You see the relationship between form and space. Architecture is hard to appreciate from two-dimensional slides.” Shepard proposed the trip to study the interactions of Christians, Jews, and Muslims during the Middle Ages through their places of worship. The area at that time was marked by tolerance and boasted a vibrant, diverse culture, she said. The Lucille Speakman Legacy Endowment was the brainchild of Randy Wewers, a Fort Smith Junior College alumnus of 1958, who reached out to other students who admired Speakman and cherished her impact on their lives to create the fund. Awards from the endowment are available to faculty members who wish to become stronger classroom teachers. Shepard noted that the endowment, which she calls “an inspired idea,” represents “a demonstrable act that supports faculty. I think that’s really, really important. It says to a faculty member, ‘Yes, we endorse what you want to do. We value you. We value what you are interested in and how you want to bring the material to the students.’” In fact, that support is part of UAFS’s strategic plan. Initiative 3 calls for “fostering and championing professional growth and development for university faculty and staff.” The trip met Shepard’s hopes. “You get ideas while you are standing there. You see new ways to bring it (the art) alive,” she said. She will use what she learned when teaching non-Western art, medieval art, and an art survey. “It’s just such a wonderful opportunity to give faculty a chance to develop a curriculum in a new or interesting way. And the lack of pressure about it is great because you can just dive in and see what will happen. You can just dive in and explore.”

FINDING THE LEADER WITHIN An opportunity to have “the full college experience” has given Ashley Jones, ’11, a desire to give. “I was on scholarship when I was at UAFS,” she explained. “I just feel very blessed because I was able to graduate without any student loan debt. I worked while I was in college, but I wasn’t stressing over bills. I was able to get involved on campus and really get the full college experience.”

Jones’ extracurricular activities on campus demonstrate her commitment to developing her leadership skills. In addition to her membership in Gamma Phi Beta Sorority, she participated in the First Bank Corp. Scholars of Distinction Student Leadership Council, the Collegiate Ambassadors Board, the Phi Beta Lambda organization for business students, and the University Student Ambassadors. “In my opinion, college is more than just the classroom learning,” said Jones, who received First Bank Corp. Business Scholarship. Now a bank examiner with the U.S. Comptroller of the Currency, Jones believes it was her extracurricular activities that taught her leadership and networking. “In my job today, from my first day on the job, I was very involved with and communicating with senior bank management,” she said. Being able to do that was the product of her extracurricular activities, which put her in contact with members of the community and donors.“ “As a student ambassador we were always attending special events like the Season of Entertainment, interacting with all different people, learning communications and networking. Furthering your career after college isn’t anything that came from your classes.” Jones’ job has been a whirlwind this summer with a two-month rotation in Washington, D.C., with the International Banking Supervision Policy group, which gave her a chance to meet members of senior management and interact with foreign regulators. In 2015 and 2016, Jones made contributions to UAFS through 48 Hours of Giving, and she intends to do so again this year, which will earn her a place in the 1928 Loyalty Society as a graduate who has given three years in a row. She is not yet at a point in her career where she can donate a lot, Jones said, but “I give the small amount that I can, and hopefully (I’ll) be able to increase that over the years as my financial situation improves.”

MATH TEACHER HOPES FOR INFINITE RIPPLES Kerbi Key Robison, ’15, has no doubt about her place in the world, and it’s right in the middle. In her senior year, Robison told her story at the 2014 UAFS Scholarship Banquet. Robison said she grew up faster than she should have, always worried about whether there would be enough money to pay the bills. Still, she said, her family “always gave me the encouragement and support I needed to try my best in school.” She recalled time playing dominos with her grandmother, who used the game to encourage Robison’s math skills. She remembered her father telling her, “If I did my very best in school I could be somebody when I got older.” She took those lessons to heart, kept her grades high, and dreamed of becoming the first person in her family to graduate from college. But she knew there was no way her parents could pay for college. Then came the good news. “When I found out about receiving an academic scholarship from my wonderful donor at the University of Arkansas - Fort Smith, I was speechless. It was like my dream was becoming a reality.” Robison was one recipient of the Mona Fuller Alonzo Scholarship, which is designated for STEM education students who will teach science, technology, engineer, or math. Having the scholarship meant she could graduate with honors and without student loan debt. Robison was not just the first person in her class to graduate from college; she has now gone on to earn a master’s degree from Arkansas State University. She knows that accomplishment wouldn’t have been possible if she hadn’t graduated from UAFS without student loan debt. “Because I wasn’t pulled down by student loans, I didn’t have the fear of continuing my education due to finances,” she said recently. “I am now working at Northside High School teaching geometry and pre-AP Algebra 2 to sophomores and juniors. I truly consider it a dream job. I have the opportunity to make a difference in so many lives here, and I think of it like a ripple effect. Because Ms. Alonzo believed in someone she didn’t know, she changed my life. She started the ripple, and now it is continuing on through me being able to impact my students. I can’t wait to see how my students impact the world, because I know they will. I hope their ripples continue infinitely.” Mona Alonzo graduated from Fort Smith Junior College in 1960. From there she went to Nashville, Tenn., where she completed a bachelor’s degree, and then she moved to Michigan almost 50 years ago. Why was she willing to endow a scholarship in 2011 for students so far away? “I was from the area, and going to school at Fort Smith Junior College was a wonderful opportunity for me,” she said. “I had need myself, so I wanted to make it possible for other students.” Sometimes it’s as hard to know where the ripples start as it is to know where they may end.
