News for and about the UAB School of Nursing Board of Visitors and Junior Board of Visitors

“Eileen and I are confident that the Board of Visitors will continue the support it has given the UAB School of Nursing for so many years and help make the School’s expanded building a reality.” – DR. BRUCE E. BURNS, 2015 BOV FUNDRAISING CO-CHAIR

BOV LAUNCHES A LETTER-WRITING FUNDRAISER

T

he UAB School of Nursing Board of Visitors (BOV) has kicked off its 2015 fundraiser – a letter-writing initiative to support an ultramodern classroom in the School’s planned building expansion and renovation. To be concentrated during the summer months, this letter-writing appeal for funds will raise monies to support a high-tech interactive classroom in the expanded building – a classroom named for the BOV – that will provide an environment for using the latest techniques in teaching the School’s students. At its December 2014 meeting, the BOV voted to support this classroom at the level of $250,000. Toward that goal, proceeds from the 2015 letter-writing initiative will be added to $55,000 raised during the BOV’s 2014 Applause for the Cause fundraising event. BOV members serving as Co-Chairs for this 2015 fundraiser are husband-and-wife team Dr. Bruce E. Burns, a Princeton Baptist Medical Center emergency room physician, and Eileen S. Meyer, CRNP, a UAB cardiovascular nurse practitioner and UAB nursing graduate. “For more than two decades, members of our Board of Visitors have been investing their time, money, and support into the UAB School of Nursing,” said Bruce. “The School this Board supports already has the highest quality faculty and the highest quality students and alumni. It is this combination of high-quality faculty, students, and

alumni that has enabled the School to attain such high national rankings – having recently moved up from #21 to #13 among hundreds of nursing schools nationwide in U.S. News & World Report rankings.” Bruce observed that some institutions move in the opposite way – first having modern, ample building space and then working toward high goals. “I believe we can all agree it is commendable that the UAB School of Nursing has been able to achieve such high goals by investing first in its people. Now, with a pressing need for a larger, more technologically advanced building, the opportunity has arrived to provide support toward this end. Eileen and I are confident that the Board of Visitors will continue the support it has given the UAB School of Nursing for so many years and help make the School’s expanded building a reality.” In addressing the BOV at its April meeting, Dean Doreen C. Harper said that procuring additional space is indeed vital to the School’s continued future ability to sustain and even further improve the School’s high rankings. As the BOV’s letter-writing fundraiser draws to a close at the end of the summer, Bruce and Eileen will host an August 29 celebration event at the Wine Loft in downtown Birmingham. They urge BOV members and their guests to attend this event and join in celebrating both the School and what they predict will be a successful 2015 BOV fundraiser.

A BUSY BOV MEETING PHOTOGRAPHY BY CATIE ETKA

In a news-packed Board of Visitors (BOV) meeting on the morning of April 28, BOV members saw plans unfold for the Board’s continuing support of the UAB School of Nursing. Held at the School’s building, the meeting featured reports from the School’s Dean, Dr. Doreen C. Harper; fellow BOV members, and staff from the Office of Development and Alumni Relations.

T

There were reports on items heading the current agenda for the BOV – led by Chair Barbara O’Neal Eddleman and Co-Chair Dr. Douglas C. Tilt. These include the BOV’s 2015 letter-writing fundraiser (Page 2), updated plans for the School’s building expansion and renovation (Pages 8 and 9), and the naming of a Campaign Building Committee (Pages 10 and 11). Announcement was made of a prestigious award to the BOV’s founder, the late Rachel Z. Booth, Professor and Dean Emerita of the UAB School of Nursing (Page 12). On a poignant note, Dean Harper spoke of deep sadness felt about the February 13 passing of former BOV Chair Bobbie Parsons and of Bobbie’s many contributions to the School (Page 13). BOV members also reported news from the Board’s recently formed committees. Scholarship Committee Co-Chair Melinda Helveston noted that committee members will participate in reviewing applications from the School’s students who are seeking schol-

arships. She urged BOV members interested in scholarship review to contact her or Co-Chair Carolyn Boone. Dr. Bill Somerall also is a committee member. In a report from Membership Committee Co-Chairs Sue Ellen Lucas and Nancy Watts, announcement came that two new members have been identified to join the BOV – Dr. Jack Trigg of Mountain Brook and Becky Babanats of Vestavia Hills. Co-Chair Paula Midyette of the Junior Board of Visitors ( JBOV) Support Committee said the JBOV, birthed several years ago by the BOV, is doing exceptionally well in its support of the School. She invited other BOV members to join this support committee, which Jane Arendall and Punky Eastwood already have joined. (The late Jean Tomlinson also served as JBOV Support Committee Co-Chair.) Public Relations Committee member Leah Taylor reported on the Public Relations Committee, co-chaired by Henry Ray and Catherine Styslinger. She said this committee supports work of all other BOV committees and helps spread messages about the good work of the UAB School of Nursing.

A Celebration of UAB Nursing

PHOTOGRAPHY BY NIK LAYMAN

t the annual UAB School of Nursing Scholarship Luncheon on February 12, faculty leader Dr. Linda Moneyham described the lasting value of a scholarship. Senior Associate Dean of Academic Affairs and one who received scholarship support during her undergraduate years, Dr. Moneyham said a scholarship is “the gift that keeps on giving.” Held at the Mountain Brook Club, the Scholarship Luncheon was hosted by Jean Tomlinson, longtime member of the School’s Board of Visitors. Noting the event’s significance, Dean Doreen C. Harper said, “I look forward to this event each year because it brings together two very special groups of people – our generous donors who make UAB School of Nursing scholarships possible, and our deserving students who have been designated as scholarship recipients.” Dr. Harper reported that, during the current academic year, 230 UAB School of Nursing students had received scholarships totaling more than $610,000.

ship, saying to the Auxiliary, “Thank you for your generosity and dedication to nursing.” She presented a copy of the University of Alabama System Board of Trustees resolution that marks the scholarship’s establishment. Receiving the resolution were UAB Hospital Auxiliary President Kyle Wick and Scholarship Committee Chair Jennifer Joyce. The audience heard student and alumni perspectives from three UAB nursing scholarship recipients, who expressed gratitude on behalf of themselves and fellow recipients. Speaking were BSN student Courtney Marbra, recipient of the Alma B. McMahon Endowed Nursing Scholarship (bearing the name of the late Alma McMahon, longtime Board of Visitors member); Amanda Segars, a BSN student who has received the Board of Visitors Endowed Nursing Scholarship; and Dr. Erin Currie, UAB School of Nursing recent PhD graduate and newly appointed faculty member, who had been the recipient of the Benjamin and Roberta Russell Endowed Nursing Scholarship.

The Dean also announced the creation of the new UAB Hospital Auxiliary Endowed Nursing Scholar-

BOARD MEMBER PROFILE

Carol Sandner PHOTOGRAPHY BY ROB CULPEPPER

C

Carol Sandner is among three members of her family serving on boards that support the UAB School of Nursing. “It doesn’t surprise me,” she said. “We tend to have the same goals.” In 2011, Carol became a member of the School’s Board of Visitors (BOV). Her sister, Catherine Styslinger, has been on the BOV since 1994. Last year, Carol’s grandson, Tim Hennessy, Jr., became a member of the School’s Junior Board of Visitors ( JBOV). Carol heard her sister Catherine talk about BOV work. “It sounded wonderful and peaked my interest,” said Carol. “Since I came on the Board of Visitors four years ago, I’ve found it to be a perfect fit. This Board has a strong purpose.” She was delighted when grandson Tim joined the

JBOV. She said Tim made that decision without her suggesting it. “I told him, ‘Tim, I am so proud of you!’ ” Carol feels linked to nursing. Her daughter Rita became a nurse, initially working in patient care and now holding a pharmaceutical industry management position. Carol also gleaned insight into nursing as her real-estate-developer husband, Joseph “Joe” Edward Sandner, Jr., received considerable nursing care during several years prior to his death in 2008. “My family put a lot of trust and dependency on nurses related to care rendered to my husband,” said Carol. “I saw the roles that nurses play in getting your loved one through an illness.” A Birmingham native, Carol is a Birmingham-Southern College graduate. After teaching fourth grade for a year, she didn’t work outside the home and focused on a busy homelife that included being the mother of five – Joseph Sandner III, Lynne Hennessy, Rita Wright, Peter Sandner (who died at age 16 in an automobile accident) and Carol Ann Phillips. Now she also has 14 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Through the years, Carol made time for community and church service – including being a symphony and museum supporter, Meals on Wheels volunteer, and Girl Scouts leader, in addition to work with St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church and Eternal Word Television Network. When husband Joe began experiencing health problems, Carol cut back on these activities. “I felt that Joe and I should be spending time together.” Carol’s life in recent years has involved some travel; one particularly memorable trip was to the Holy Land, with fellow church members. She plays bridge, a longtime interest. “I’m in one bridge club where I’ve been a member for 50 years!” Then there’s her BOV work. “Soon after I came on the Board, I had an opportunity to serve on the committee that selects UAB School of Nursing scholarship recipients. That further bonded me to the Board’s work. I recall thinking, ‘Here are scholarship applicants with wonderful backgrounds who want to be nurses. That’s what we need – qualified individuals who really want to go into nursing.’ ”

John Bankhead PHOTOGRAPHY BY ROB CULPEPPER

When John Bankhead and his wife Bradford welcomed their firstborn child in December 2009, they were joyful but also concerned. Their infant daughter had a congenital heart defect. She soon would have to undergo open heart surgery. Tallulah “Lulah” Bradford Bankhead underwent successful surgery when she was four months old. Grateful for her care at UAB and Children’s of Alabama, John said, “I felt a newfound appreciation for nurses because of the care nurses gave to Lulah.” Bradford discussed this gratitude, and a desire to give back, with her friend Ashelynn Falkenburg Smith, a member and later Chair of the UAB School of Nursing Junior Board of Visitors ( JBOV). Ashelynn suggested that joining the JBOV would provide a way to give back. After all, John and Bradford were grateful for pediatric nurses, and the JBOV was raising funds to support scholarships to help educate outstanding pediatric nurses. John joined the JBOV in 2010. During an especially busy time in his

Bradford and John with their two daughters, Hollis, 3, and Lulah, 5

life, he took a JBOV sabbatical in 2011, returned in 2012, and has served continuously since. Officially named John Hollis Bankhead V, John was born and reared in Jasper, the county seat of Walker County, Alabama. He is a descendant of Alabama figures with strong Jasper ties who have made national history in political and theatrical arenas. He is a direct descendant of the original John Hollis Bankhead, who represented Alabama in the United States Senate from 1907 until 1920 and who, after being instrumental in enacting the nation’s first federal highway-funding legislation, became known as “The Father of Good Roads in the United States.” John has another ancestor who was a U.S. Senator, another who was Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, and another, a cousin, who was legendary movie-and-theatre actress Tallulah Bankhead.

Now residing in the Birmingham area – in Mountain Brook’s Crestline neighborhood – John maintains Walker County ties, including his interest in the Walker Area Community Foundation. In November 2014, that Foundation was among sponsors of the JBOV’s No-Show Ball fundraiser. After graduating in 1999 from Furman University, where he played on the tennis team for a time, John returned to Alabama, initially residing in Mobile. His life is full. He is a mortgage banker with iCap Realty Advisors. His family has grown; in addition to 5-year-old Lulah, he and Bradford have a second daughter, 3-year-old Carolyn Hollis Bankhead, who goes by Hollis. John is a member of St. Mary’s On the Highlands Episcopal Church. In his spare time, he enjoys golfing and hunting and fishing, and occasionally a bit of tennis. John said it is “gratifying” to be on the JBOV, because “this Board has a very special cause, and its members are a very special group of people.”

“This building transformation will help us to educate talented leaders in nursing care, science, and education well into the future.” — DEAN DOREEN C. HARPER

8 BOARD BRIEFS / SUMMER 2015

As plans unfold to expand the UAB School of Nursing building, several exciting highlights were discussed with Board of Visitors (BOV) members at their April 28 meeting. Highlights of updated plans include: •

The footprint of the building will be expanded along and facing University Boulevard and also extend toward Unity Park. The centerpiece will be a light-filled Grand Atrium, connecting the activities of nursing students, faculty, practitioners, and scientists.

A design priority is to make maximum use of all square footage and incorporate advanced virtual technologies within the existing and expanded building.

Among features will be flexible spaces to accommodate large numbers of students, faculty, and alumni who can come together for joint and mutual learning experiences.

A nursing competencies assessment suite for innovation and education will prepare students to excel as expert caregivers. As is true of the School’s existing facility, the completed expansion will allow for some ground-level parking. “This building transformation will help us to educate talented leaders in nursing care,

science, and education well into the future,” Dean Doreen C. Harper said of progress on expansion plans. As architects and other design experts continue to work with School and central UAB administration on expansion plans, fundraising efforts also are well under way to help fund the expansion – a $15 million building-related fundraising effort that is part of the School’s participation in UAB’s current Capital Campaign. Several BOV members already have made substantial gifts either specifically earmarked for the School’s building expansion or given toward the School’s overall involvement in the Capital Campaign. Building expansion gifts include $1 million from BOV member Barrett MacKay and husband Rick, to support new space to house the Barrett Brock MacKay Florence Nightingale New home for UAB School of Nursing to consist of light-filled expansion connecting to existing facility

Letters Exhibit; a $100,000 gift announced by BOV member John Beard from Alacare Home Health & Hospice, which he heads as Board Chair/President, to support a new home-health skills suite; a building expansion gift of $50,000 from BOV member Nancy Worthington and her husband Al; and a building expansion gift of $25,000 from BOV member Robert E. “Bobby” Luckie III and his wife Jill.

This committee is made up of individuals with impressive backgrounds, from a range of geographical locations, who are giving of their time and ideas to invite others to join them in investing in our building expansion,” said Jeannie E. Horton, the School’s Senior Director of Development. “This is a group of dedicated supporters who understand nursing and the UAB School of Nursing and who have a passion for what we do at our School to educate the nurse leaders of tomorrow.

We are pleased to introduce: Co-Chairs Barrett MacKay, a master’s graduate of the UAB School of Nursing and a former Board of Visitors Chair, and her husband Rick, who owns a chemical engineering firm serving the pulp and paper industries. Their own support is reflected in their decision to donate $1 million toward the building expansion. In deciding on their gift, Barrett said, “Rick and I had a lot of fun.” She said there are many opportunities connected with giving to this expansion; among them is supporting named spaces within the building. Robert E. “Bobby” Luckie III, Ex-officio. Recently retired as Chairman of the Birmingham-based Luckie & Company advertising agency, he is a former Board of Visitors Chair and a member of a family representing a long legacy of supporting the School. His father, Bob Luckie, was the key community organizer in the founding of the Board of Visitors. His daughter, Mary Katherine Cabaniss, became founding Chair of the School’s Junior Board of Visitors. Julia W. “Judy” Powell, a graduate of the School and currently Senior Vice President, Patient Services for National HealthCare Corporation in Murfreesboro, Tenn. – a corporation serving 11 states with nursing homes, home care, assisted and independent living, hospice, and rehabilitation. In addition to supporting the building expansion, she has been a dedicated supporter of the School’s Annual Fund and has a special interest in preparing the next generation of nurses in gerontology and palliative care. Anthony W. Patterson, Senior Vice President of Inpatient Services and former Interim CEO for UAB Hospital. A graduate of the UAB School of Nursing, he is former Senior Associate Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of UAB Highlands. In addition to his UAB nursing degree, he holds a UAB master’s degree in health administration and a Healthcare Quality & Safety Certificate from UAB.

William M. “Bill” Ferguson, who retired from his 36year telecommunications career as President of BellSouth’s 34,000-employee Network and Technology Group. He and his wife Jan first began supporting the UAB School of Nursing in 1994, when they attended the first fundraiser sponsored by the School’s Board of Visitors. Together they gave the first major gift contributed to the School for its building expansion. Sabrina Summers Williams of Thomasville, Ga., a UAB School of Nursing master’s graduate who has experience as a Clinical Nurse Specialist and has taught nursing at Jacksonville State University and Thomasville College. Driven by her passion and love for nursing, she became an early investor in both graduate and undergraduate nursing at the UAB School of Nursing and has helped improve access to nursing education in her community. Robert “Bob” Hodges of Huntsville, who founded Specon Systems, a construction company specializing in industrial and architectural acoustics, light gauge steel framing, and computer site planning. He has a personal interest in the UAB School of Nursing. His daughter, Dr. Ashley Hodges, is on the School’s faculty as Associate Professor and Assistant Dean for Graduate Clinical Programs. His granddaughter, Amanda Segars, is a junior undergraduate student at the School. Dr. Bruce E. Burns, an internal medicine specialist working as an emergency room physician at Princeton Baptist Medical Center. He and his UAB nurse practitioner wife, Eileen S. Meyer, CRNP, a graduate of the School, both serve on the Board of Visitors and currently are co-chairing the Board’s 2015 letter-writing fundraiser. They have supported the School in a number of ways – making one of the largest planned gifts in the School’s history, endowing a nursing scholarship, and hosting an end-of-summer fundraising event to benefit the School.

Bobbie Parsons’ mother, Alabama Governor Lurleen B. Wallace, wanted to be a nurse. In Bobbie’s words: “Mother graduated from high school at age 16 and wanted to enroll in nursing school. She was told she must be 18 to enroll. By the time she was 18, she was married to Daddy and pregnant with me.” Bobbie’s father, Alabama Governor George C. Wallace, was a state legislator when he authored a 1947 bill to create Alabama’s first public baccalaureate-level nursing school, now the UAB School of Nursing. Although his bill didn’t pass, it was a model for a 1949 bill that did pass. In 1996, Bobbie and her husband Jim began supporting the UAB School of Nursing by making available their Shoal Creek home, South Oak, as a BOV fundraiser site. In 1997, Bobbie became a BOV member. In 1997 and 1998, South Oak again was a BOV fundraiser site. As 2000-2004 BOV Chair, Bobbie led through three fundraisers. In support of the UAB School of Nursing, Bobbie and Jim created the Governors Lurleen B. and George C. Wallace Memorial Fund. Bobbie explained her BOV commitment: “We (BOV members) have made it possible… easier… for a lot of very talented people to become nurses. Nursing in turn is going to serve all of us at some point in time, or has already served us.”

Board of Visitors (BOV) emeritus member Bobbie Parsons, who passed away February 13, years ago became a leader in the BOV and in so many ways supported the UAB School of Nursing. We will all miss Bobbie, whom we very much respected, admired, and loved.

Other Parsons family members formed connections to UAB School of Nursing support. Bobbie and Jim’s daughter-in-law, Kim Parsons, became a member of the School’s Junior Board of Visitors. The woman who became their sister-in-law, Elizabeth, with deep BOV ties, was planning a BOV South Oak fundraiser when she came to know Bobbie and Jim, which led to meeting her future husband, Bobbie’s brother George. A former BOV Chair, Elizabeth Wallace offered this tribute to Bobbie: “Oh my goodness, I miss Bobbie. Bobbie was such a big part of my life from our first meeting in 1997. Acquaintance quickly moved to friendship, then just as quickly moved to family when we became sisters-inlaw in 2000. Bobbie introduced me to George and would always say, ‘It’s not everyone who can choose her own sister-in-law!’ “Among so many experiences we shared over those 18 years was the Board of Visitors. Bobbie grasped her desire to support the UAB School of Nursing with everything she had… with her time, her home, her money, her family, her friends, her connections, her experiences, her ideas, and her love. Those of us she left to carry on with that support can only hope to assume a part of what she did… because none of us will ever be able to compete directly with all that she did.”

MESSAGE TO OUR Supporters and Friends

Dean Doreen C. Harper

Dear Friends, As we engage with prospective donors, locally and across the country, sharing the impressive story of the UAB School of Nursing, it always happens — a spotlight shines on the incredible support we receive from our community through our dedicated Board of Visitors and Junior Board of Visitors. Why? Because it’s special. It’s unique. It’s important. This support makes remarkable differences in how students, faculty, and alumni learn, discover new knowledge, and provide the best possible care for patients, their families, and the communities they serve. It’s at this dynamic intersection of community support and innovation in nursing education, science, clinical practice, and outreach that lives are changed. • Bright young men and women, the first in their families to attend college, earning degrees from a school regarded among the best in this country • Hospitalized patients receiving the highest level of nursing care at the bedside, fostering recovery and healing, and saving lives • America’s heroes receiving compassionate care from highly educated nurse practitioners that understand the unique needs of veterans and their families • The most vulnerable and tiniest of premature infants, and their parents, cared for and nurtured by expert neonatal nurses and nurse practitioners • Young breast cancer survivors, their spouses and children, connecting with important resources to help them live their lives to the fullest • Families across rural Alabama living with diabetes, cancer, and heart disease learning the importance of eating healthier and taking their medications • Families facing end-of-life care decisions are embraced, empowered, and comforted • Adult children caring for frail, elderly parents guided through complicated illnesses and transitions between home, hospital and long-term care facilities

This is the power of nursing at its best — and the power of philanthropic investments in students, facilities, programs, and faculty of the UAB School of Nursing. When opportunity, passion, and expertise collide with needed resources, incredible things happen. Things change. Throughout the Campaign for UAB we have been asking, “What do you want to change today?” We are so very grateful to our Board of Visitors, Junior Board of Visitors, and the individuals and foundations joining us to change the health and quality of life for people in Birmingham, across Alabama, and around the globe. Together we are building a legacy of hope and health for generations to come. With our sincerest thanks,

Jeannie E. Horton
