GO for ACADEMICS
A guide to Undergraduate Academic programs When it comes to choosing a university, what really matters? it isn’t a logo or a mascot or even a picture-perfect campus. it’s books and backpacks… labs and learning… experiments and exams. it’s the academic foundation that leads to the ultimate goal – your college degree. At UAH, we take pride in offering nationally recognized academic programs that combine interesting classes, inspiring professors and incredible hands-on experiences. rigorous and rewarding, an education from UAH prepares students like you for success. that’s what matters most of all.

Check Out These Facts About UAH: • UAH was among the top “National Universities” and “High School Counselor Rankings” by U.S. News & World Report for 2012. • Our institution has been classified by the Carnegie Foundation in the “very high” research category – an elite group of only 73 public universities in the United States and only the nation’s top 3% of four-year accredited degree-granting colleges and universities. • In a recent survey by USA Today/The Princeton Review, UAH was among the top 25 “best value” universities nationwide. • The College Database recently ranked UAH #1 for the best financial return on investment among Alabama post-secondary schools, both private and public.
LEARN about SCIENCE
College of Science UAH’s College of Science offers unique opportunities for you to study at one of the South’s finest institutes for scientific research. We’re at the forefront of pioneering research in many areas, including optics, astrophysics, atmospheric science, space physics and structural biology. As a result, you can learn from (and conduct research alongside) some of the most prominent scientists in your field. The College of Science is also known for providing undergraduate students with personalized instruction and hands-on learning experiences. Most classes are kept small, for example, and research opportunities aren’t just available to you… they’re expected of you! Your UAH degree is a great foundation for graduate school or professional studies in medicine, dentistry, optometry, pharmacy, or veterinary school. It can also prepare you for an exciting career in education, government, industry, and so much more.
At your fingertips. The Shelby Center for Science and Technology is equipped with amazing facilities, including our state-of-the-art confocal microscope, and up-to-date research and teaching labs. Our campus also houses one of the most powerful Nuclear Magnetic Resonance labs in the world.

AN ACTIVE LIFE: UAH has student organizations engaged in science, space exploration, robotics, and more.
5 Laws of UAH’s College of Science 1. Students come first. Along with individual attention, they can expect meaningful research opportunities and the chance to publish and present their findings. 2. Our undergraduates do amazing things. Some of our best have created a scientific satellite that’s orbiting the Earth. 3. The right location creates incredible opportunities. Our ideal location in Huntsville allows students and faculty to work with scientists at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center, Redstone Arsenal, and high-tech companies in the nation’s secondlargest university-related research park.
Right on our campus, the National Space Science and Technology Center unites 500+ scientists from government, corporations, UAH, and other universities to do research in areas like atmospheric science, information science,
4. Students are individuals, so you can work with faculty to design an individual major to fit your goals. Possibilities include biochemistry, mathematical finance, astrophysical modeling, computational chemistry, climate change, medical physics, and more. 5. You can earn a B.S. and M.S. in only 5 years. Our Joint Undergraduate Master’s Program (JUMP) allows you to apply classes toward both your undergraduate and graduate degrees, shortening your master’s program to a single year.

LEARN about SCIENCE Scientific Options The College of Science offers a selection of degree programs, but for those whose interests cross disciplines, consider our Individualized BS program. Usually starting in the sophomore year, students in this program work with a faculty sponsor to design an interdisciplinary program of study appropriate for his or her educational and career goals. Paul Ferguson biology and chemistry
Paul Ferguson, a biology and chemistry major from Huntsville, chose the College of Science at UAH because of his passion for the field. Ultimately, he earned a perfect 4.0 grade point average and received the UAH College of Science Highest Academic Achievement Award. Like many of our students, Paul valued UAH’s supportive faculty, small classes and research opportunities. His passion? Synthetic biology. “At its core, this involves building an entire gene sequence from scratch...and it’s fascinating.”
Dr. Massimiliano Bonamente associate professor of physics
A native of Italy, Dr. Massimiliano Bonamente, associate professor of physics, teaches everything from introductory classes to complex higher-level courses… and enjoys them all. “A good lecture should make the subject come alive – so if I have to, I’ll stand on the table to show how things move,” says the self-proclaimed “old school” teacher who loves the chalkboard. “At the end of class I’m usually sweating like crazy.” And if the lecture has been interesting? “I’m covered in white dust.”
