Welcome to UAH

Deciding where you want to GO to college isn’t easy. At UAH, we want to make the process as stress-free as possible. How? By giving you the information you need to make a decision. Because the more you know about what makes the Charger Nation so special, the more you’ll see why UAH is recognized as one of the most popular universities in America.

Your education is our top priority. That’s why we keep class sizes small and our student/faculty ratio low, so that each student gets the personalized attention he or she needs to LEARN. And why we offer more than 80 areas of study. So no matter what your academic interest – whether it’s atmospheric science or art history – you can find a curriculum that works for you.

No one word can sum up the UAH experience. It encompasses everything that makes these years of your life so unique. It also shapes you into the person you’re meant to BE. From the friendships you’ll make and professors you’ll meet to the events you’ll attend and the classes you’ll take, you will discover what it means to be a Charger – for life.

CAMPUS LIFE // A big part of the college experience is making friends and joining the campus community. That’s easy to do at UAH, since we have over 120 clubs and organizations covering the entire spectrum of activities and hobbies. And that doesn’t include the many events organized by the student-run Association for Campus Entertainment and the Student Government Association, events like Tasty Tuesday, Spring Fling, and Week of Welcome! One of the most popular is Late Night Breakfast, a buffet of breakfast goodies that starts around 10:00 pm at the end of each semester before final exams begin and served by wellknown faculty members and staff.

“My best experience at UAH has been with the leadership programs that I am involved in. Those programs have helped me come out of my quiet shell and get more involved on campus. I was able to create my own student organization, become a Resident Assistant, and so much more!”

“The students who are involved on campus are very friendly and outgoing. They’re the ones that keep up the energy on campus and make it more enjoyable for everyone. I got involved instantly, and it really made me feel more at home finding a great network of friends so quickly.“

// Middletown, MECHANICAL ENGINEERING

Ohio

“It was hard to live on my own for the first time, but UAH has given me the opportunity to break out of the shell I was in during high school. I felt really welcomed in my residence hall, and I made friends with the people in my building quickly.”

ACADEMICS // Business Administration, Engineering, Liberal Arts, Nursing, Science, and Honors – these are UAH’s six colleges. Combined, they offer more than 80 areas of study, including such specialized majors as Economics and Computational Analysis, Industrial and Systems Engineering, Foreign Language and International Trade, and Earth System Science. But when it comes to your career, what happens inside the classroom is just as important as what happens outside of it. That’s why we have so much more to offer our students, like the fifteen research centers, such as the Propulsion Research Center and Center for Applied Optics, that call UAH home. Or the internship and co-op opportunities presented by notable industry neighbors like NASA Marshall Space Flight Center, HudsonAlpha, Redstone Arsenal, and the National Weather Service. Or the many academic and honors clubs that serve to enhance our classroom curriculum. All of these add up to more than just a college degree. They add up to life experience, and that will serve you well no matter what major you choose. “Students should consider UAH because of the academics and opportunities offered on campus. UAH doesn’t just teach subjects; you leave here with practical skills from applying what you have learned.”

CAMPUS LIVING // To be a part of the campus community, it helps to live on campus. That’s why campus housing is available to all UAH students. Freshmen primarily live in Central Campus Residence Hall, while those who participate in the Honors Health and Wellness, or Health Professions communities live in Frank Franz Hall. Sophomores, juniors, and seniors can choose to live in Charger Village, North Campus Residence Hall, or Southeast Campus Housing. There are also five houses that make up Fraternity and Sorority Housing. Of course, we know how parents worry! But they can rest assured that we take student safety seriously at our residence halls, all of which require a Charger ID card for entry. And each one is fully staffed, from the front desk personnel who monitor the lobby and check guests in and out to the Resident Assistants who promote community involvement, address concerns, and resolve concerns. “Living on campus has made everything easier for me. I can get a little extra sleep in the morning, beat traffic, go back to my room between classes, it’s safe, and the list goes on and on. I absolutely think living on campus has contributed to my success here at UAH.”

THE CHARGER NATION // UAH isn’t defined by what makes it special, but by who makes it special – and that’s our students! “From day one, everyone at UAH was incredibly helpful and supportive. Scholarships were available to me and there was an accredited teaching program. UAH is large enough to give the college experience, but small enough to get individual attention from faculty.”

Kirsten Currier

“I considered attending another local college since I would be living at home, but deciding to attend UAH was the greatest decision of my life. ATHLETICS // We’re all about supporting our Chargers. Just like our fight song says, we have pride in our Blue and White! Of course, we get a little help from our mascot Charger Blue, our cheerleaders, the Chargerette Dance Team, and the Blue Crew – one of the largest student spirit groups in the Gulf South Conference. But we also count on our students to bring the spirit to our games, and there’s no reason not to when admission is free with your student ID! Sports at UAH aren’t just for watching, though. Whether you like to play badminton or practice Budo Taijutsu, you’re sure to find others who share your athletic interests. We even have organized outdoor recreation trips throughout the Tennessee Valley and beyond during weekends throughout the year. Just don’t forget to wear blue on Fridays, so you’re ready for when the High Five Friday Crew makes their rounds!

UAH has the only NCAA ice hockey team in the south. We are a member of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association.

Financial Aid Options SCHOLARSHIPS

GRANTS

Through the generosity of alumni, friends, and corporate partners, UAH is able to offer a variety of scholarships to new students who demonstrate high academic achievement. Award values range from $500 up to total cost of attendance. Eligibility varies based on your academic performance, leadership, and areas of interest. UAH offers two primary types of scholarships for first time freshmen:

Grants do not have to be repaid; they are gift aid based on demonstrated need. Grant eligibility is determined by the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), available at fafsa.gov.

Merit Tuition Scholarships: First-time freshmen who meet certain minimum GPA and ACT/SAT test score standards are eligible to receive a UAH Merit Tuition scholarship. These scholarships generally cover a portion of tuition, with a maximum possible value of full tuition and housing. Departmental Awards: UAH offers numerous scholarships to students with particular majors or interests. These awards vary in value and may be offered in addition to the Merit Tuition Scholarship. To be considered for Departmental Awards, students should be admitted to UAH and complete an online scholarship application no later than December 1. To learn more about these and other scholarship opportunities at UAH, go to uah.edu/scholarships.

LOANS Student and parent loans are available without regard to financial need, with repayment deferred until after graduation. If you demonstrate financial need by completing the FAFSA, you may qualify for an interest subsidy on your loan. No interest is charged on your loan if you are registered for at least six credit hours per semester. For details, visit uah.edu/loans.

STUDENT EMPLOYMENT Depending on financial need (as demonstrated by the FAFSA), you may qualify for federal work-study on campus. Part-time jobs are also available through the Student Success Center. We recommend students work no more than 20 hours per week. Visit uah.edu/workstudy to learn more.

VETERANS You may qualify for education benefits if you are a veteran or a veteran’s dependent. Contact the UAH Office of Veteran Affairs at uah.edu/veteran-affairs or 256.824.2758. 21
