CAMPUS LIFE // A big part of the college experience is making friends and joining the campus community. That’s easy to do at UAH, since we have over 130 clubs and organizations covering the entire spectrum of activities and hobbies. And that doesn’t include the many events organized by the student-run Association for Campus Entertainment and the Student Government Association, events like Tasty Tuesday, Spring Fling, and Week of Welcome! One of the most popular is Late Night Breakfast, a buffet of breakfast goodies served by well-known faculty members and staff that kicks off at 10:00 pm before the start of each semester’s final exams.

FRIDAY NIGHT FLICKS / SUNDAY CINEMA Every Friday and Sunday evening, UAH’s Association for Campus Entertainment hosts free movies for anyone with a UAH ID. And since no movie experience is complete without popcorn and drinks, those are provided as well!

CHARGER CYCLES As part of UAH’s commitment to a more pedestrian-friendly – and environmentally friendly – campus, Charger Cycles allows students, faculty, and staff to borrow bikes from centrally located racks using the honor system.

WEEK OF WELCOME Week of Welcome is one of UAH’s most popular campus traditions. At the beginning of each semester, students new and old are invited to take part in eight straight days of interactive events and activities ranging from night Frisbee, paint wars, and slip-n-slide kickball to a foam party, an improv show, a black light bash, and more! It’s a great way to make new friends, learn about UAH’s student organizations, and discover all the ways you can get involved on campus.

ACADEMICS // Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences; Business Administration; Education; Engineering; Nursing, Science; and Honors – these are UAH’s seven colleges. Combined, they offer more than 110 areas of study, including such specialized majors as Economics and Computational Analysis, Industrial and Systems Engineering, Theatre, Writing, and Earth System Science. But when it comes to your career, what happens inside the classroom is just as important as what happens outside of it. That’s why we have so much more to offer our students, like the fifteen research centers, such as the Propulsion Research Center and Center for Applied Optics, that call UAH home. Or the internship and co-op opportunities presented by notable industry neighbors like NASA Marshall Space Flight Center, HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology, Redstone Arsenal, and the National Weather Service. Or the many academic and honors clubs that serve to enhance our classroom curriculum. All of these add up to more than just a college degree. They add up to life experience, and that will serve you well no matter what major you choose.

COLLEGE OF EDUCATION – NEW! UAH’s newest college is the College of Education, which comprises the Department of Curriculum and Instruction, the Department of Kinesiology, and the UAH Rise School, an outreach and service unit. Education majors are encouraged to pursue an internship and participate in the College’s field experience program, which are both designed to give students real-world experience in a variety of instructional settings. The College also supports several extracurricular organizations for education majors, in addition to Kappa Delta Pi, an international honor society in education. For more information, please visit uah.edu/education.

HONORS COLLEGE // If you are looking for a more intimate, more challenging college experience at no extra cost, then UAH’s Honors College may be for you. We offer small, inspiring classes and unparalleled research opportunities that will cultivate your critical thinking skills and enrich your academic career! The program is compatible with any major or area of study, with Honors students enjoying more enhanced versions of classes they would normally take. They also receive priority registration and one-on-one advising, and take part in special extracurricular programming that complements their academic curriculum. Many choose to live in Honors Housing, where they participate in community activities and share common spaces with similarly high-achieving peers. Interested students are eligible to apply to the Honors College after they are admitted to the university. Typical applicants have a high school GPA of 3.5 or higher and strong standardized test scores; however, decisions are made on a case-by-case basis. Once they are accepted, Honors students are required to complete 24 hours of Honors courses, with the program culminating in an independent research project of the student’s own design. To learn more about the Honors College, including requirements and how to apply, please visit uah.edu/honors.

But they can rest assured that we take student safety seriously at our residence halls, all of which require a Charger ID card for entry. And each one is fully staffed, from the front desk personnel who monitor the lobby and check guests in and out to the Resident Assistants who promote community involvement, address concerns, and refer residents to on-campus resources when needed.

PERKS OF CAMPUS LIVING One student per bedroom, two per full bathroom (wow!) Kitchens and laundry facilities in all residence halls Fridges and microwaves in all suites Internet and cable available to all residents Charger Security Escort available Monday – Friday, 5:00 pm – 12:00 am Basketball, sand volleyball, and picnic areas 75 housing staff members 52 resident assistants 45 lounge and study areas 15

They also serve as a repository for employment, internship, and co-op opportunities, connecting job seekers with employers through their bi-annual career fairs and their online career management system, Charger Path.

THE COUNSELING CENTER is staffed by mental health professionals and provides free, individual counseling sessions by appointment to students who are registered for at least three credit hours.

DISABILITY SUPPORT SERVICES develops and implements reasonable accommodations and appropriate strategies for a successful learning experience and ensures that students with disabilities have an equal opportunity to fully participate in all aspects of the educational environment.

THE STUDENT HEALTH CENTER addresses the basic health needs of students who are registered for at least three credit hours. Services are low cost and include physicals, vaccinations, preventative care, and the treatment of acute illnesses.

THE STUDENT SUCCESS CENTER (SSC) provides tutoring and writing assistance, academic coaching, exploratory advising, and our Peer Assisted Study Session (PASS) program, in which peer-led study groups focus on integrating course content (what to learn) with study skills (how to learn).
