A Brief Explanation When the park first opened back in 1857, the event was one of magnificence. People flocked from across the country by train to see the opening, which was attended by some 60,000 people. Thousands of pounds were sunk into the development of the park, which was built on with additions such as the tennis courts, bowling greens, band stands and so on.
This project was about exploring who still uses the park using the visual format of photography, over 160 years since it first opened. I tried to capture accurately the wide array of different people I met throughout my exploration of the park that still make use of its space, from dog walkers to teenagers, from people playing bowls to someone out with their metal detector. While the park isn’t as lively as it used to be, it certainly isn’t dead.
All the photographs pictured in this Zine were taken using both a large format 4x5 Micro Press camera and a medium format 6x6 Mamiya C330 camera using photographic film processes.
