Where did Arkansas get its name?

The word “Arkansas” was derived by French explorers from the Native American name for the tribe now known as Quapaw (or Arkansaw). They called them “Ugakhpah” which means “the people who live downstream.” After the pronunciation was slightly changed (or mispronounced) by the French explorers, the spelling and pronunciation has evolved to become “Arkansas.”

As the only accredited rural training program in Arkansas, our program offers a unique experience. We are looking for applicants who truly want to make a difference in our community and embrace the “small town feel. An unopposed program with a total of nine family medicine residents, we believe our small size lends itself to more one-on-one interaction with faculty and hands-on learning experiences for our residents. Our community partner hospital, Magnolia Regional Medical Center, a 49-bed acute care facility, is the only hospital within a 45 mile radius of our program. While we are a rural program, we ensure that our residents gain experience with larger hospitals through rotations in Texarkana, El Dorado and Little Rock. Our residents receive a well-rounded education in primary care, acute care, OB, population health and chronic conditions. We hope you will consider Magnolia, with its beautiful scenery, diverse population and close-knit neighborhoods. Our team looks forward to meeting you!

We invite you to look us over. We work in a hospital that was selected as one of the Top 100 Hospitals in America. We get the opportunity to care for patients in one of the busiest ERs. Our inpatient medicine service is one of the most demanding and rewarding anywhere. Pediatrics, thanks to the very busy outpatient clinic affiliated and attached to our residency, gives our residents tremendous learning experiences. Sports medicine, care for the aged, and emergency care are also strong at our residency. But in the end, it is all about people. People and relationships make the world go ‘round and they are what make our residency program what it is today. The nurses, residents, dedicated faculty, and all the other individuals that work with the residents are what is important. Without them, it would be just another residency program. Take some time and come to the Four State Area and get to know us. UAMS Southwest Regional Campus | Texarkana 3417 U of A Way Texarkana, AR 71854 Phone: 870-779-6064 arkansasahecresidencies.com
