Alexander became her mentor and told her, “We need you here.” Then, her connection with the university was forged, fueling her desire to make a difference. “As a Howard graduate, not knocking anyone else, but you can go anywhere. You say ‘Howard,’ and doors open,” Stewart said.
Her connection with UAPB was nurtured under Alexander’s mentorship, and her love for student success motivated her to take the helm as provost.
“I chose to stay here for the students,” Stewart stated.
Stewart’s vision is centered on aligning UAPB with the ever-evolving demands of the modern job market. She believes in preparing students for the workforce of today. “We shouldn’t prepare students for the work field of years ago; we must prepare them for the work field now,” Stewart said.
Her formula for success, “The D.O.A.” (Desire, Opportunity and Ability), encapsulates her dedication to empowering students to seize opportunities and fulfill their aspirations.
Stewart’s approach to leadership is anchored in close collaboration with the Student Government Association and ensuring that all programs meet the highest standards.
As the new provost, Stewart’s mission is clear—to continue the tradition of excellence at UAPB. She envisions the university’s future as a beacon of quality education, student success and visionary leadership.
“I want to see our programs accredited and successful,” Stewart said.
Stewart’s 35 years of dedicated service to UAPB and unwavering passion for education is the driving force behind her vision for the university’s future.
“I was hesitant to take the role as provost because it’s so demanding,” Stewart said. “I believe this is what God prepared me for, to be here at this time and place,” Stewart concluded.
