DRAMATURG’S NOTES Twelfth Night, or What You Will, a long beloved middle comedy, has been cherished since its debut in 1601 for Queen Elizabeth in a January 5th performance in honor of Epiphany. It was the culmination of a 12-day festival following Christmas in which celebrants would honor the birth of Jesus and the arrival of the Three Kings by enjoying boundless food, drink, pranks, and entertainment. Misrule was another ingredient in the celebration of these Christmas revels. Towns would participate in misrule as a way of purging our inherent need to be foolish, but also as a method of maintaining social hierarchy. Many of these festivities would turn social rules on their head, such as allowing peasants to act like royalty. Shakespeare brings the topsyturvy world of misrule to life in Twelfth Night, or What You Will, and our production evokes the spirit of those festivities. Our play takes place in Illyria, a timeless and placeless land of decadence, full of largerthan-life characters relishing in the loneliness of unrequited love or enjoying excessive revels and practical jokes. Illyria is a sensual world, where gender is fluid, relationships are either too hot or too cold, and desire is an all-consuming fever. Viola and her twin brother Sebastian are thrust into this upside-down town after their shipwreck. Separated from her brother ashore and thinking him drowned, Viola enters Illyria disguised as a young man named Cesario, and becomes a servant to Duke Orsino. While serving the Duke, Viola learns of his powerful desire for Olivia, despite her utter contempt in exchange. As Viola falls for Orsino, Olivia falls for Cesario, forming a deliciously doomed love triangle in which external appearance steers them each astray. The pangs of such consuming unrequited love plague these characters, making their failed passes at each other all the more tragically entertaining. Interspersed into the love triangle is Sir Toby, Olivia’s uncle, and his hilarious schemes with both Sir Andrew Aguecheek and Malvolio. The not-so-foolish Fool, Feste, acts as the “liaison” between the bitter and the sweet; he sings songs of beginnings and endings, dances wittily between the two households, and serves as witness to much of the trickery. While Twelfth Night, or What You Will is a lovely and almost whimsical comedy, Shakespeare gives us a lot to ponder. Are all things truly as they seem? Can there be laughter without guilt, or fun without consequence? Can we know the joy of love without the sorrow? Perhaps it is simply a comedy of mistaken identity, but we do hope you can revel in the misrule, relish in the passion that is Twelfth Night, and take from it what you will.

Experience passion and seduction in this seventime, Tony Award-winning musical. Revered by her people as an advocate for the poor, Eva Perón made a meteoric climb from the slums of Argentina to her role as beloved First Lady at the age of 27, and became one of the most powerful women in the world - though her grand ambition and fragile health also made her one of the most tragic. Told through a captivating score, Evita tells Eva’s remarkable true story through some of theatre’s most beautiful songs, including the unforgettable, Don’t Cry for Me, Argentina.
