DRAMATURG’S NOTES When tasked with producing an iconic play, the question must be asked: Why put up this play now? As a direct response to this ever important question, director Stephen Wrentmore chose to tell Shakespeare’s story through emphasis on the weather and chaos of the play in association with the current global warming crisis. Seasons have begun changing of their own accord and without reason, a phenomenon playfully addressed and explained by Shakespeare when he shows nature to be temperate, mischievous, and unruly, a fact he implores us to embrace and trust. Many can argue that Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream was inspired by what is called The Midsummer Ritual. This ritual, brought about by the summer solstice, was meant to be a cleansing time for the body and spirit, as well as a sexual liberation. Sound familiar? The people of Europe presumed that sexual oppression caused the world to spin out of control, just as Shakespeare’s Titania asserts when she so eloquently describes a world left in ruin as a result of her and her king’s tumultuous relationship: “But with thy brawls thou hast disturb’d our sport. Therefore the winds, piping to us in vain, As in revenge, have suck’d up from the sea Contagious fogs; which falling in the land Have every pelting river made so proud That they have overborne their continents.” As soon as Titania and the Lovers find their way back to true love, tensions dissolve and harmony ensues, showing that in Shakespeare’s eyes, love will calm any tempest. In tandem with creating modern associations in the conflict of the show, Wrentmore also wanted to ensure that this literature would read as the romantic comedy that it is. Following the 21st century rom-com model, he chose to eliminate over five thousand words from the original text, allowing the story to whisk the audience away through an hour and a half long light-hearted love story. To further assist in layering contemporary influences on the play, the early modern English dramatic style has been either completely set aside or subdued in several aspects of this recreation. Unlike the Elizabethan age, our show will have female actors on stage and replace traditional period clothing with fashion that can only fit in a time of “other.” Unrestrained by time or place, the action of this play is able to exist outside of a conventional realm, imploring you to reestablish reality as it is created on our stage. However, in keeping with the original text, Dramaturg’s Notes continue on next page...
DRAMATURG’S NOTES CONTINUED the language will hold true to the script and the actors will only use simple tricks and props that would have been available to them in he 17th century. Heavily influenced by both our author and director, A Midsummer Night’s Dream comes to this play space reimagined, yet as charming as it ever was. You are encouraged to set aside your preconceived notions of this Athens and allow the scene to guide you through Shakespeare seeing with our eyes. - Amber Justmann (Dramaturg) & Ellie Boyles (Assistant Dramaturg)
