Your UA Theatre Fund for Excellence Gifts at Work!

Dr. Jessica Maerz UA Professor

This season marks the fourth year of the UA School of Theatre, Film & Television’s Undergraduate Research Symposium, and we simply couldn’t hold this event without the generous support of the Theatre Fund for Excellence. While our School’s students are very well known for outstanding creative work in their fields, the URS is our premiere outlet for showcasing their brilliant academic achievements. Every year at the URS, students in the School present their original research in a panel format, while invited scholars from outside the University of Arizona share their own work and methods with the UA community. Students, faculty, and members of the general public alike, participate in the two-day symposium.

URS 2015 featured keynote speeches on research methods in the arts authored by guest scholars Dr. James Brandon of Hillsdale College and Dr. Ross Melnick from University of California, Santa Barbara. These addresses were followed by a reception for invited guests, students, TFTV faculty and staff, and Marroney Circle members at the Marriott University Park. The symposium’s second day focused exclusively on student research. Fourteen TFTV juniors and seniors in our BA and BFA programs presented their own research to the public for the first time in UA’s beautifully restored Silver and Sage Room, with our guest speakers serving as respondents. In the early afternoon, faculty, visiting scholars, student panelists, student auditors, and guests of the student presenters enjoyed a buffet lunch. Thanks to your generous assistance provided by the Theatre Fund for Excellence, this event was a tremendous success in showcasing the fascinating work of our students for an audience that extended beyond the walls of the UA – which was the intended goal. Please keep giving to the UA Theatre Fund for Excellence, and thank you so much for doing so. Your gift matters. Dr. Jessica Maerz Assistant Professor, UA School of Theatre, Film & Television

BA Student Kelsie Williams presents her work at a recent Undergraduate Research Symposium.

If you would like to make a gift to the UA Theatre Fund for Excellence to help more students have enriching experiences like the one mentioned above, please visit: www.uafoundation.org/give/cfa/theatrearts, or contact the Office of Marketing & Development at (520) 626-2686 for more information.

REMBERING

BURNEY STARKS He was only 64 when he passed away at church on May 31, 2015, but long-time Pueblo Magnet High School teacher, Burnes (Burney) Starks, lived a vibrant life and was beloved by many in the Tucson community. He was a 1969 Pueblo High School graduate who played football at the UA and became a UA honors gr graduate in 1974. After the UA, Starks became an active duty Army Officer whose tours included the U.S. as well as South Korea. He was known for his beautiful singing voice and could be seen and heard frequenting many stages in Tucson as an actor and singer; skills he learned while in the UA Theatre program. He was even in an episode of Young Riders with Richard Roundtree and appeared in Hanky Panky, directed by Sidney Poitier. Starks’ community involvement ran wide throughout Tucson. From serving on the boards of the Tucson Arizona Boys Chorus, the Dunbar Coalition, the America Israel Friendship League, Southern Arizona Academic Decathlon and the Warrior Alumni Foundation, to leading the organized effort of festi the annual Juneteenth festival, commemorating the date of June 19, 1865, when Texas slaves learned, two years after the fact, that they had been freed. There are a great many splendid things that can and have been said about Burney Starks, but you need only go online and Google his name to find them. He belonged to many other groups and people, not the least of which was his loving family: his wife, Ruth, and five children, as well as his siblings and familie their families. For UA Theatre friends who wish to feel a little closer to Burney, you can visit seat H19 in the Marroney Theatre. The H is for honor and the 19 is for the historic date in June, 1865, that meant so much to him. We miss you, Burney, but know that your legacy lives on.

MADE IN TUCSON: FILMS FROM THE OLD PUEBLO

All Films in this Series Begin at 7pm Inside the UA Center for Creative Photography & are FREE to the Public Join faculty and students from the School of Theatre, Film & Television as we explore the history of lmmaking in Tucson! Ever since the days of silent movies, Tucson has been a key location for Hollywood lmmakers. The western was the most popular genre, naturally, with Old Tucson serving as the shooting site for dozens of classic lms, starring legends including John Wayne, Paul Newman and Kirk Douglas. But non-westerns were also lmed in Tucson, with lmmakers taking ad advantage of the beautiful desert environment and the unique architecture of the city itself. Over the course of the year, we will move from classic westerns of the '50s to more contemporary hits. The Widescreen Wednesdays program features not only the screening of a complete feature lm, but a lively and informative introduction to each lm by a UA professor. Plus, a student from the Bachelor of Fine Arts program in Film & Television will present one of his or her short lms! WINCHESTER ‘73 Oct 7, 2015

ALICE DOESN’T LIVE HERE ANYMORE Feb 24, 2016

James Stewart stars as a frontiersman who wins a Winchester riie in a shooting contest, only to see it stolen by an infamous outlaw. Also starring Shelley Winters, this lm was a surprise smash hit in 1950.

Starring Ellen Burstyn in an Oscar-winning role as Alice Hyatt, a newly-widowed mother who decides to pack up and move to Monterey to restart her stalled singing career.

A KISS BEFORE DYING Nov 4, 2015

THE OUTLAW OUTL JOSEY WALES Mar 30, 2016

This suspenseful, Hitchcokian thriller is about a charming sociopath, played by Robert Wagner, who seduces the heir of a mining dynasty (Joanne Woodsedu ward) in an attempt to get his hands on her inheritance. Filmed all around Tucson, including areas of campus and downtown, this lm is particularly exciting to Tucson residents.

Clint Eastwood plays the title character, a man who a refuses to accept that the Civil War has ended after his family is murdered by Union troops. This was the rst sign that Clint Eastwood was more than just Dirty Harry and the Man With No Name - he could also be a great director.

LILIES OF THE FIELD Dec 2, 2015 Sidney Poitier won an Oscar for his performance in this classic lm that was shot near Sabino Canyon.

RAISING ARIZONA Apr 27, 2016 Not shot in Tucson, but who can resist the Coen Brothers’ screwball comedy classic, set in Arizona?
