DRAMATURG’S NOTES Garson Kanin never finished high school. However, despite being self-educated and selfconscious about his lack of formal education, Kanin enjoyed a successful career in theatre and Hollywood as an actor, writer, and director. He served in the United States Army during World War II and spent most of his time in Washington D.C. While briefly stationed in London, Kanin wrote Born Yesterday in the evenings as bombs exploded over the city. Born Yesterday begins in September of 1945, a month after the atomic bombs were dropped Dr. Jessica Maerz on Japan, marking the end of the U.S. involvement in World War II. The Cold War had not yet UA Professor

begun; therefore, one of the largest concerns for Americans was the post-war economy. Fearful of inflation, or a return to the Great Depression, many believed international trade and a free world market could maintain economic stability. Harry Brock is in Washington D.C. to expand his junkyard business internationally. Scrap-metal - specifically scrap steel - played an integral role in the U.S. war effort. During the war, the American steel industry experienced a massive shortage in steel production, which threatened the manufacturing of supplies for the war. In 1943, the American home front collected and donated five million tons of scrap metal to compensate for the shortage in the steel industry. It is within this industry that Brock has made his massive fortune. Billie Dawn doesn’t concern herself with Brock’s business dealings – until she begins pursuing knowledge, reading books, and questioning her position within his organization. Kanin’s deeply-held belief in the power of education and his reverence for American democracy both manifest vividly in Born Yesterday. After our country’s recent turbulent election, we can sympathize with the uncertainty and frustration with Washington D.C. that Kanin presents. While American opinion of our government has shifted greatly, Kanin illustrates the timeless power of the quest for knowledge in this optimistic and vibrant play.

- Anna Jennings, Dramaturg
