Alumn NOTES

MFA Acting 1981, JD 1989
Note The UA trained me for two rewarding careers: theatre and law. The two have intertwined — and taken turns. I have enjoyed both! My rst taste of lm was while an MFA student. I was cast in the NBC Movie of the Week Enola Gay. It was three week’s work - wow! I had perhaps the most memorable line in the lm: “What the hell is atomic?” As my nal MFA project, I wrote and performed a one-person play, Bucking the Tiger, about the infamous Doc Holliday. I have performed the play over 90 times. When in law school, I was also a guest instructor for the theatre department teaching a screen acting class. During my law studies, I continued my acting career in theatre, lm, and TV. After law school, I taught in the theatre program at Central College in Iowa. When I started practicing law, I also started performing David Rintels’ play, Clarence Darrow. This included a fundraising performance for the UA College of Law. My law career was interrupted when I was a visiting professor/guest director at New Mexico State University. I also toured with Theatre Grottesco, including OO-Broadway performances at the New Victory Theatre. I worked with Shenandoah Shakespeare (now the American Shakespeare Center in Staunton, Virgina) on their directing staa as Associate Artistic Director, Voice Coach, and Actor. Returning to Iowa in 2005, I picked up my law career with Iowa Legal Aid as an attorney for a Hotline for older Iowans. Thank you, U of A.

DRAMATURG’S NOTES The Kit Kat Klub seems so fun, so glamorous - doesn't it? Due to the advent of the Weimar Republic and subsequent lack of censorship, cabarets began a return to their original function as line-up driven forums in which performers could discuss societal issues. Whether a literary high-art venue or seedy nightclub, like our Klub tonight, cabarets were a way to cope with a rapidly changing society. Considered extremely progressive and tolerant, the Weimar Republic not only challenged traditional gender roles by allowing women to vote, work and access birth control, there was far more freedom to be gay than in most of Europe with an estimated 26 LGBTQIA+ magazines and up to 130 gay and lesbian clubs in the 1920s. In addition, Berlin was fast gaining a reputation as a Mecca for writers and artists. All this progress was halted in its tracks when Adolf Hitler was elected Chancellor in 1933. Set at the dawn of 1932, Cabaret is based on a firsthand account of the social environment that paved the way for the takeover by the Nazi Party. Christopher Isherwood, the historical counterpart to the character of Cliff, noted in The Berlin Stories (the early template for Cabaret), "I am a camera with its shutter open, quite passive, recording, not thinking.” If we consider the social landscape the subject, then each character serves as a camera, each seeing their world and environment through a different lens. Hal Prince, the producer-director and creative force behind he project, took the opportunity to parallel the historical issues of pre-Nazi Germany by creating the timeless Cabaret. When the musical originally premiered in 1966, the stage had a large mirror that reflected the audience; therefore, making them complicit in the action, both onstage and in reality, reminding them that this—the intolerance, the Holocaust, the destructive nature of power—could happen here. Over time, directors have not felt the need to be that overt in their presentation. Mirrors. Cameras. What sort of things are happening in our society now that we are reflecting or recording without action? If we interpret Cabaret as a warning, what might we be made aware of in this moment? How are we responsible for what has happened and what will happen in our society? What kind of camera are you? - Chloe Loos, Dramaturg

Ever since the days of silent movies, Tucson has been a key location for Hollywood lmmakers. The western was the most popular genre, naturally, with Old Tucson serving as the shooting site for dozens of classic lms, starring legends including John Wayne, Paul Newman and Kirk Douglas. But non-westerns were also lmed in Tucson, with lmmakers taking ad advantage of the beautiful desert environment and the unique architecture of the city itself. Over the course of the year, we will move from classic westerns of the '50s to more contemporary hits. The Widescreen Wednesdays program features not only the screening of a complete feature lm, but a lively and informative introduction to each lm by a UA professor. Plus, a student from the Bachelor of Fine Arts in Film & Television will present one of his or her short lms! A KISS BEFORE DYING Nov 4, 2015
