NOTES
BA Theatre Minor Film & Television, 2016
Since graduating from the UA, Angelique has been working alongside UA Film & Television Professor, Lisanne Skyler, on her HBO documentary, Brillo Box (3¢ oo), and feels fortunate to be mentored by such a talented filmmaker. Being a part of a project that got shortlisted for the 89th Academy Awards® was incredible. After spending seven months working in Tucson, Angelique made the exciting move to Los Angeles mid-January and was hired in February as a Producer’s Assistant at Aliwen Entertainment. Upon moving to LA, she took on the role of producer on a short film entitled, Cut Loose. Apart from her current work on Brillo and Cut Loose, she is looking to get involved in both acting and dance classes so that she may continue to work on her craft. She is also in the early stages of writing a television script, for which she plans to film a pilot in the next few years. As Angelique builds a name for herself in LA, she is constantly reminded of a piece of advice that she was given during her time as a theatre student: “No matter what you do, create.” With that, Angelique keeps moving forward.

DRAMATURG’S NOTES Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice may have taken a stance on Eva Duarte de Perón, but the process of demystifying her iconicity is one which scholars and Argentinians have undertaken and debated for decades. The myth of Eva is an example of when fact is secondary, and legend takes on a life of its own. During Eva’s lifetime, Argentina experienced a tumultuous political environment. Juan Perón’s violent and controversial populist agenda was publicly softened by Eva’s declarations of love and acts of goodwill toward the “true” Argentinians oppressed by the oligarchy, and the success of their propaganda lives on today. The strands of her influence were so woven into the identity of Perónism and Argentina, that even long after her death, the presence of her body was enough to cause controversy and scandal. Her funeral lasted almost two weeks, during which, an estimated two million people came to pay their respects. Perón was deposed three years after Eva’s death and her body was taken by anti-Perónists and hidden for over 17 years. It had no resting place until it was taken to Milan and buried under a false name. Eventually, she was brought back to Argentina and entombed with her extended family. Modern depictions of Eva Perón in film and theatre are deeply scrutinized in Argentina. Rice traveled to Argentina to research Eva, but felt the need to be secretive to avoid local backlash. Not surprisingly, Webber and Rice’s Evita had been boycotted in Argentina because of the threat to Argentinian society and its potential in “defaming national dignity." Argentine identity and Eva’s symbol are irrevocably linked, and discourse on her humanity is clouded by the tangle of conjecture and fact. Regardless of the truth, Eva’s painted face displayed throughout Buenos Aires will live on with Rice’s prophetic words, “Don't cry for me, Argentina. The truth is I shall not leave you. Though it may get harder for you to see me, I'm Argentina, and always will be.”
