Your UA Theatre Fund for Excellence Gifts at Work! We’re happy to have the UA Theatre Fund for Excellence for a myriad of reasons, as it allows us to help students in many different ways. This Fall, the Theatre Fund for Excellence has allowed us to add a 12-station computer lab in the design room (#270 in the Drama Building). For Theatre Design/Technology students, it means that they are not required to purchase their own computer that is capable of running CAD (computer-aided design) software. They can use a design station in the classroom. This was made possible in part with money from the Theatre Fund for Excellence. This makes a HUGE difference in a time when university budgets have been slashed and is one of the many reasons why we all make efforts to continue to grow the Theatre Fund for Excellence. If you have made a gift to the fund, thank you for being such an integral part of our Theatre students’ education! If you have not made a gift, please consider doing so. It will always be used to enhance the learning experiences of our Wildcats in Theatre.
Design/Tech students at their new computer terminals, thanks to your generosity.
If you would like to make a gift to the UA Theatre Fund for Excellence to help more students have enriching experiences like the one mentioned above, please visit: www.uafoundation.org/give/cfa/theatrearts, or contact the Office of Marketing & Development at (520) 626-2686 for more information.
DRAMATURG’S NOTES
S.R. Bindler, an NYU student home from vacation, was drawn to a lit-up car lot at
3am in the year 1992. He was so enamored with the “human drama kind of thing” he witnessed, that he filmed the annual Hands on a Hardbody contest three years later. The rules were simple, if your name was drawn, you had the possibility of earning a brand-spanking new truck. You just needed to keep your hand on the truck longer than anyone else. You got a five-minute break every hour, a 15 -minute break every six hours. Finally, squatting, kneeling, and leaning (while not on break) were forbidden. A seemingly strange contest, that was done for 13 years until 2005, when a 24-year-old contestant, Richard Vega, threw a trash can Dr. Jessica Maerz
through theUA window Professorof a nearby K-Mart, obtained an unsecured gun, and shot himself just before a 15-minute break.
What desperation could lead people to stand for days on an asphalt parking lot
under the grueling Texas sun, let alone kill themselves when it seems the opportunity will not pan out?
According to an NPR interview, the show creators, Amanda Green, Doug Wright,
and Trey Anastasio, looked at the opportunity to adapt this film as a way to bring the voice of working-class Americans to a traditionally more elite audience. While some characters may be amalgamations of multiple people, and some relationships added for the theatricality, the striking thing about this musical is that every single character represents a real person who struggled with his/her economic status. Despite America’s reputation for being a prosperous nation of upward mobility, horrendous income inequality has been on the rise since the 1980s, leading to a greater divide between the wealthy and the poor. In 2006, Texas had the largest inequality between the middle and upper classes as well as the second highest gap between lower and upper classes in the country. Well, that’s Texas. Let’s bring it home: Arizona had the fourth highest gap between lower and upper classes out of the 50 states.
According to the 2000 Census, the median household income for families in the
Catalina Foothills was $82,675. Twelve miles south, residents of South Tucson made just $17,614. Families in the Catalina Foothills made over four times the amount of families in South Tucson. While it may be tempting to scoff at this contest, or the larger-than-life personalities, these people live among us; they are our neighbors and ourselves. To them (and maybe even us), this truck represents a world of possibilities and salavation - a new life, a better home, a college education, a way to feed their children - the American Dream.
-Chloe Loos ~ Dramaturg
Special Acknowledgments Arizona Repertory Theatre would like to give special thanks and appreciation to S. R. Bindler, the filmmaker of the Hands on a Hardbody documentary, for allowing us to use some of his film during the lobby pre-show.

A delectably witty, screwball comedy about a corrupt junk dealer named Harry Brock, who tries to get ahead in Washington, D.C. Hoping to bribe a few senators to help him with a crooked business scheme, Harry decides his dim-witted girlfriend, Billie Dawn, needs some tutoring so he can achieve his goal. Harry hires a newspaper reporter to educate his showgirl mistress, but gets more than he bargained for when he discovers a little bit of learning can be a dangerous thing.
