Your UA Theatre Fund for Excellence Gifts at Work! In the beginning of my first semester, I realized that the largest festival of fully produced, Latino plays was happening in Los Angeles. It was called The Encuentro and sponsored by the Latino Theatre Commons. Here, I was deep into my dramaturgy course, focused on new work and I dreamed the dream of taking my students with me, so they could witness exciting new works from across the U.S., so they could experience new plays in three dimensions. A few of my students were finishing up a BFA in dramaturgy and I asked myself how I might impart all I know to them in our precious time together. I wondered what might they Elaine Romero learn about theatre if they saw plays they'd never heard of, Playwright & UA Professor created in new and exciting ways? What if they met the heads of theatres who could eventually hire them? I went to the Director of our School, Bruce Brockman, and told him that I thought our students should have a "transformative experience before leaving this place." He agreed, but lamentably told me that it would not work. It was a crazy idea and I understood his need to say no. The next day, Bruce tracked me down. He excitedly told me, "I think I've found the money." I now know the money was from the Theatre Fund for Excellence - from YOU. What ensued was a profound experience for me and four young women from the UA. The gathering began with an introduction, and I cannot describe the power in the room as each of the four young women, three from culturally diverse backgrounds, stood up, said her name, and declared herself as a dramaturgy student from the University of Arizona and a student of Elaine Romero's. My colleagues continued to talk to me about how they had heard my students share during feedback sessions, or about the strong impressions our students had made in conversation. Many people walked up to me said with glee, "I'm so glad you brought your students!" Colleagues from SoCal universities were impressed. They hadn't been able to get their students to come from across town. What was this University of Arizona and how did they seize the moment of The Encuentro? On the night of the special dinner, our four young women held their own with the Director of Development from Oregon Shakespeare Festival (OSF) as they talked about the show they'd seen that night that had just been picked up by OSF. (OSF is a professional company at which any professional artist would give anything to work.) And, suddenly, because funds were supplied by you, our wonderful patrons and donors, our four young women had access to one of the greatest new play minds in the country. YOU did that by helping to grow the Theatre Fund for Excellence, and for that, I will forever be grateful. To Excellence, Elaine Romero Assistant Professor, UA School of Theatre, Film & Television If you would like to make a gift to the UA Theatre Fund for Excellence to help more students have enriching experiences like the one mentioned above, please visit: www.uafoundation.org/give/cfa/theatrearts, or contact the Office of Marketing & Development at (520) 626-2686 for more information.

DRAMATURG’S NOTES “Well I think it must be worth it… It’s all there is, isn’t it?” Fredrika offers us this treasure at the end of a night of outlandish spectacle at her grandmother’s request for something hopeful. She is delightfully wise for her age. Like most of us, Fredrik Egerman expects the young to be naïve, telling his son Henrik, “I’m afraid being young in itself can be a trifle ridiculous.” However, this wonderfully uncharacteristic insight from Fredrika fits perfectly within the world of A Little Night Music, which tells us that there are three stages of life: being young, being foolish, and being old. Though we face unique challenges in each stage, it is indeed the foolish that lack most in the success department. The story is delivered to the audience with apt commentary from the most trustworthy characters available: Fredrika, the young, and Madame Armfeldt, the old. However, the fools’ story poses the biggest challenge to the preconceived notions we hold about our own lives. Fredrik, Desiree, Carl-Magnus and the lot of them appear amazingly directionless and irrational on stage, and yet these fools are so recognizable in our own lives. Their follies speak so knowingly to the secret struggles we face and often create for ourselves. The love triangles (if you can call them that) in which they tangle themselves are unbelievably messy, but that is perhaps what makes Night Music’s version of a love story resonate so deeply. It does not shy away from the true ups and downs of being in relationships with living, breathing, erring human beings. Our cast and crew give us characters that draw out our empathy when they least deserve it. These characters are truly foolish, and are ignorant of their silly ways for much too long. Some leave their messes unresolved for years only to return to them and realize that it might be too late. This theme of love and folly tied up with time permeates the play and is arguably the crux of all the action and misfortune the characters encounter. However, the beauty of this story can be found in the idea that there is no such thing as “too late.” While time relentlessly forces us onward, it is indeed as gracious as it is vicious. We are just as relieved as the characters are when they finally find salvation from their buffoonery. But, we are only left to linger in their peace momentarily before we are waltzed away from their world just as suddenly as we were waltzed into it. - Elizabeth Boyles, Dramaturg
