Your UA Theatre Fund for Excellence Gifts at Work! In March of 2014, I attended my first USITT (United States Institute for Theatre Technology) conference, due in large part from financial support I received from the UA Theatre Fund for Excellence.

Ted Kraus, Technical Director

Bruce Brockman, the Director of the School of Theatre, Film & Television, had been urging me to go since arriving at the UA, but time and money always seemed to outweigh any expected benefit. The Theatre Fund for Excellence eliminated one of those issues, and as Bruce suggested, the time was well spent.

In addition to attending numerous sessions over the course of the four-day conference, I was able to connect with other educational technical directors, and explore ways to conduct research vital to my tenure process. In fact, a session I proposed at that conference was accepted, and I am chairing a panel on Problem Based Learning at the USITT conference during March, 2015. At this year’s conference, my co-panelist, Rich Dionne (Technical Director at Purdue University), and I will propose expanding this year’s session into a day-long seminar where we will help instructors develop their own problem-based learning curricula. Thank you for giving to the UA Theatre Fund for Excellence. -Professor Ted Kraus Assistant Professor Technical Direction

DRAMATURG’S NOTES Othello is a classical Shakespearean tragedy about the unfortunate events leading to the demise of Othello, the Moor of Venice. Themes of loyalty, honor and truth permeate the text and ask the audience to think about the nature of jealousy, for as Iago says, “It is the green-eyed monster which doth mock the meat it feeds on.” It is also a text that is extremely controversial, as it deals directly with the often inflammatory concept of race. Shakespeare’s England enforced a racial binary; one was either white or colored. The word “Moor” was not exclusive to people of African descent, but also applied to indigenous inhabitants of India, North America, Indonesia, North Africa, Sub-Saharan Africa and the Middle East. The origin of race during the Renaissance was largely debated between two theories; that the difference in skin color was because of sun exposure, or that it was a curse by God to indicate a person’s wrongdoings. The word “black” was often used as a synonym for evil, and due to England’s color prejudice, it was common to perform in blackface to symbolize the character’s sinful nature. Stereotypes of Africans as lusty, possessive, and suspicious were prevalent in the minds of Shakespeare’s audience. In 1526, Leo Africanus, a wellknown author of the time, wrote in his History and Description of Africa, “No nation in the world is so subject unto jealousy; for they will rather lose their lives, than put up any disgrace in behalf of their women.” Shakespeare took these expectations and turned them on their head; Othello is a black man, but he is a good man. Iago is white, but from the first scene of the play, he purports, “I am not what I am.” From watching Iago’s deviancy evolve, to seeing the culmination of Othello’s jealousy, the play leaves audiences questioning their own perception of truth.

A Note from a Theatre Program Advisory Board Member Theatre history tells us that from earliest times the theatre has been an integral part of all cultures. My love of the theatre was born when, as a 6-year-old, I saw a production of "Hansel and Gretel" at the Goodman Theatre School in Chicago. Serving on the Advisory Board for the UA School of Theatre, Film & Television in different capacities for more than 10 years has been one way I am able to share with the Tucson community all that theatre brings to life on stage at the UA Arizona Repertory Theatre (ART). Each performance of our ART productions provides me not only the opportunity to revel in the joys of live theatre, but the satisfaction of knowing that the students are developing the professional skills they will need for a successful career. ART affords both our Acting/Musical Theatre and Design Tech students an exceptional educational experience. I encourage you to consider giving a donation to the UA Theatre Fund for Excellence as another way to support the School. Your patronage is greatly appreciated. See you at the theatre! - JoAnn Zirkle

A freshman actor, he is extremely excited to be working with this company. He’d like to thank his parents and sister for love and support and for traumatizing him enough that he has emotions to draw on as an actor.

Austin Wright (Duke of Venice) – is a junior BFA Musical Theatre major originally from San Diego, CA. He feels so blessed to be here in Tucson and working with Brent on this monster of a show. He has also been seen in The Full Monty (Teddy), Oklahoma! (Ensemble & Will Parker u/s), and The Fantasticks (Bellomy) here at Arizona Repertory Theatre. Austin plays Secretary for the co-ed theatre fraternity, Theta Alpha Phi, here on campus. He would not be here today without the best family anyone could ask for and sincerely thanks all of the faculty for their constant support and dedication to his learning and growth as an actor and a human being.

David Weynand (Brabantio) – is proud to join Arizona Repertory Theatre on an Acting Fellowship. David holds an MFA in Directing from Texas State University and a BFA in Acting from the Theatre School, DePaul University’s professional conservatory, formerly the Goodman School of Drama. Recently, he was seen as Donnie in Stella & Lou at the Invisible Theatre. His favorite off-Broadway credits include Night Just Before the Forest at the UBU Repertory and Ron in The Ice Fishing Play at The Samuel Beckett Theatre. David's favorite regional roles include Dvornichek in Rough Crossing at the Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park, Etienne in A flea in Her Ear at the St. Louis Repertory Theatre, Hindley in Wuthering Heights at the Paper Mill Playhouse, A Tuna Christmas at the Actors Theatre of Louisville, Algernon in The Importance of Being Ernest with actor Larry Linville at the Capital Repertory, A Funny Thing…, Pseudolous at the Hampton Playhouse, Bela Zangler in Crazy for You at the Walnut Street Theatre, Lord Henry in Picture of Dorian Gray at the Wisdom Bridge, Paul in You Can’t Take it With You at the Steppenwolf and Tom/Phyllis/ Leslie in Sylvia at the Capital Repertory. he goal of our Take Your Seat! campaign is to raise funds for the Showcase of Talent Endowment. The annual Showcase of Talent provides an opportunity for senior Acting and Musical Theatre majors to audition for, and interview with, industry professionals for theatre, film and television across the country. These potential employers also interview and review portfolios of junior and senior Design/Technology and Dramaturgy majors, as well as present valuable workshops to help students transition into the professional world.

S

ome of our students secure employment as a result of the Showcase of Talent, and all receive the priceless experience of interacting with working professionals. So, Please...Take Your Seat!
