DRAMATURGY NOTES When Blanche gets off the streetcar at Elysian Fields, she is clearly not prepared for the world into which she has entered. She is what is (not so) affectionately referred to as a Southern Belle who cannot survive in a world without gentility and decorum. However, she has entered into a place where her charms and former social status are not appreciated or even acknowledged, and only the street-smart and somewhat cruel can get by. Blanche’s only saving grace is her relationship with her sister, which picks up right where it left off after years of separation. Stella and Blanche have an undeniable bond. They grew up together, and share the same struggles as formerly upper-class women in the post-war era. It is clear from the beginning that Blanche has always depended on Stella, and Stella takes care of her sister. However, Blanche also has a protective side, and genuinely wants to get Stella out of her abusive relationship. Throughout the play, she tries to protect Stella from Stanley’s harshness, and take care of her. The sisterly relationship forms the core of the play. Although the two most memorable characters are Stanley and Blanche, Stella is always there in the background, ready to defend her sister at a moment’s notice. This is something that anyone with a sibling can relate to, and is perhaps a window to let us into the world of the play. However, more than that, it is a way for us to relate to one of the most iconic characters in American drama, and to see her as less of a Southern Belle, and more as a three-dimensional person with wants, needs, and, dare I say it, desires. We may all know Blanche’s iconic lines and persona, but through her relationship with Stella, we can see her and the play in a new way, making this production of A Streetcar Named Desire fresh and emotionally relevant.
