Your UA Theatre Fund for Excellence Gifts at Work! Professional Opportunities for Students by Jenny Lang One of the activities that the Theatre Fund for Excellence supports is professional opportunity for students. Through this fund, senior BFA Stage Management student, Jenise Catrone, had the opportunity to accompany me to Oklahoma City to work as my Assistant Stage Manager on Oklahoma City Philharmonic’s The Christmas Show in November and December of 2015. According to Jenise, “Going to Oklahoma City to work as an Assistant Stage Manager was a fantastic experience, as I got to work under my advisor, Jenny Lang, a professional Stage Manager, as well as learn what it's like to work for a large company within a limited time frame. This experience was a test of my ability as a professional and showed me how the training I have received in my education will help me later in my career. I was also able to make some professional connections that will be helpful to me in the future.” Jenise will be the Stage Manager for Arizona Repertory Theatre’s upcoming production of Rent and will be graduating in May with a BFA in Design and Technology with an emphasis in Stage Management. DRAMATURG’S NOTES We would not have The Tempest today were it not for Shakespeare's First Folio, printed in 1623. The Folio was the first complete collection of his plays, printed for “the most able, to him that can but spell,” according to its preface. The captivating and assorted topics found in The Tempest seem to be the climax of all of his work. The play is a celebration of the richness of the human heart even in the face of the temptations of vengeance. It seems fitting then, that Miranda’s poignant final words echo one of the themes Shakespeare’s works aim to examine: “Oh brave new world, that has such people in’t!” We are first introduced to Prospero as a man who orchestrated a raging storm in order to bring his adversaries to justice. As all seeming revenge tragedies go, we’ve come to expect a man whose kingdom is stolen to avenge his loss. It is a decision we might not think to question were it not for the moral obstacles Shakespeare has created for Prospero that ultimately transmutes this story from tragedy to comedy. Ariel’s initially indebted relationship to Prospero blossoms into one of mutual love. Prospero’s desire to reclaim his kingdom and Ariel’s wish for freedom begin to unfold and lay a foundation for their own self-discoveries. Where on your journey do you realize what you truly care for? It is a surprisingly human observation from an inhuman Ariel that reminds Prospero of his own empathy “…If you now beheld them, your affections/Would become tender.” His loved ones’ questioning observations puncture his original ambitions and bring onto the battlefield two mighty primal contenders: revenge and forgiveness. Which will win his heart? Prospero’s journey creates the structure The Tempest stands on. Shakespeare provides Prospero with conflicts that force him to contemplate his intentions and face his evolving identity “…In a poor isle and all of us ourselves/When no man was his own.” Will Prospero give up his god-like power over the island to return to a more human existence? - Elizabeth Boyles, Dramaturg

MADE IN TUCSON: FILMS FROM THE OLD PUEBLO
All Films in this Series Begin at 7pm Inside the UA Center for Creative Photography & are FREE to the Public Join faculty and students from the School of Theatre, Film & Television as we explore the history of lmmaking in Tucson! Ever since the days of silent movies, Tucson has been a key location for Hollywood lmmakers. The western was the most popular genre, naturally, with Old Tucson serving as the shooting site for dozens of classic lms, starring legends including John Wayne, Paul Newman and Kirk Douglas. But non-westerns were also lmed in Tucson, with lmmakers taking ad advantage of the beautiful desert environment and the unique architecture of the city itself. Over the course of the year, we will move from classic westerns of the '50s to more contemporary hits. The Widescreen Wednesdays program features not only the screening of a complete feature lm, but a lively and informative introduction to each lm by a UA professor. Plus, a student from the Bachelor of Fine Arts in Film & Television will present one of his or her short lms! ALICE DOESN’T LIVE HERE ANYMORE Feb 24, 2016
THE OUTLAW JOSEY WALES Mar 30, 2016

Director Martin Scorsese won the prestigious Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival for this lm, which was later adapted into the long-running sitcom, Alice.
Clint Eastwood plays the title character, a man who a refuses to accept that the Civil War has ended after his family is murdered by Union troops. This was the rst sign that Clint Eastwood was more than just Dirty Harry and the Man With No Name - he could also be a great director.
