DRAMATURG’S NOTES In the past decade, our country has suffered through one of the greatest economic declines since the Great Depression. This permeates our culture, and some cities have yet to recover. One of these cities is Buffalo, New York. Buffalo was a thriving city based around industrialization. However, when the mills were forced to lay off workers, it began to decline. By 1982, unemployment was at 12%. By 2000, Buffalo’s population had fallen by half. Buffalo’s unemployment rate today is at 7.6%. It is below the national average, but it is indicative of the growth that is yet to come. This is the economic situation that frames The Full Monty. Though it is a musical comedy, The Full Monty grapples with many serious themes. The characters in the play struggle to come to terms with their identities as members of their communities and what makes each of them a man. The play is captivating because their self discoveries are happening at deeply vulnerable moments, emotionally and physically. As their clothing comes off, the spirit and camaraderie of the characters are what shines through. David Yazbek and Terrence McNally have masterfully captured many important questions for the characters within the world of the play -the women ask if the men will go the full monty, the men ask if they should go the full monty. By happy accident, or exceptionally smart writing, the writers directly parallel the feeling of the production team and actors on stage. Monty brings up questions of what is acceptable in the modern theatre. The performance of the musical is sometimes met with great trepidation. Ultimately, the vibrant characters and relentless courage of the material win over the audience by the final number, when characters and audience alike are shouting for the boys to “LET IT GO!” - Skylar Westberg, Dramaturg

A Note from a Theatre Program Advisory Board Member I saw my first live theatre production at age eight. The female lead’s name was Julie, like mine, so boy, was I hooked. I wanted to be a musical actor. Life took me other places, but my love of theatre has been life-long. I discovered UA Arizona Repertory Theatre in 2005 and I became a fan. My goal in becoming a Theatre Program Advisory Board member was to share my passion for this theatrical gem with everyone I know. I cannot think of a better way to promote my enjoyment of theatre along with these young, fresh, talented group of students, than by being part of the Board and working to spread the word about it in the Tucson community. Look for me and nine of my friends at the November 21st performance of The Full Monty. After wining and dining them in my home before the show, I hope to create a few more theatre devotees. - Julie Cohn
