DRAMATURG’S NOTES This is a title that some will scoff at and maybe they're right to, but when tasked with describing something as nebulous as the human condition, This becomes oddly precise, especially when one has the ability to see the vulnerabilities of each character. Melissa James Gibson originally set out to write a play about adultery but—as she quickly discovered—adultery isn't all that interesting on its own. However, when you add a dead husband, a couple on the precipice of disaster, a man whose only calling is to remember things and a hot borderless doctor, things become infinitely more charged. When someone close to you dies, it often triggers an intense recognition of your own mortality; a recognition that can be utterly paralyzing. On the other hand, if you're approaching middle age, if your friends are having children, if the spark leaves your marriage, if you meet someone who is really hot and creating an actual impact on the world, or if you sleep with your best friend's husband, your newfound motion might be a tailspin. Melissa James Gibson has provided us with a cross-section of grief and the many ways we choose to deal with it. This's "this" is different for every character, but all of their "this's" are centered around a fundamental inability to see outside of themselves. This tribe is relentlessly self-involved to the point where conversations become overlapping monologues and the introduction of a cultured French doctor threatens to tear their worlds to pieces. "This" is their very small lives; lives that have probably always been small, but we're frozen in that state with a loved one's death. "This" is their insistence on pity, their never-ending game of "whose life is worse,” their constant need for validation from each other, and their inability to see their immense privilege. You might be wondering what the upside to all of this is, but those of us who have been involved in a slo-mo tailspin know that once you hit bottom, you can only go up. When the ashes settle, and all is said and done, we're left with raw material and an opportunity to reinvent ourselves; become someone else. This is an invitation to hit bottom and bounce back, to find purpose in your life, and rejoice in the small victories.
