History of Shawls

The origin of shawls in the world can be traced back more than 700 years, when aristocrats and nobles treasured it as a mark of royalty. The word shawl is derived from Persian "shal", which was the name given for a whole range of fine woollen garments Kashmir was a pivotal point through which the wealth, knowledge, and products of ancient India passed to the world. Perhaps the most widely known woven textiles was the famed Kashmir shawls The Kanikar, for instance, has intricately woven designs that are formalized imitations of Nature. Yet another type of Kashmir shawl is the Jamawar, which is a brocaded woollen fabric sometimes in pure wool and sometimes with a little cotton added. They have finest paisley design, largest motifs, exceptional luster and oriental culture woven on pashmina. some shawls have net-like patterns with floral ensemble motifs in them. Another type of Kashmiri shawl is called Dourukha, a woven shawl that is so done as to produce the same effect on both sides. This is a unique piece of craftsmanship, in which a multi-coloured pattern scheme is woven all over the surface, and after the shawl is completed, the rafugar (expert embroiderer) works the outlines of the motifs in darker shades to bring into relief the beauty of design. This attractive mode of craftsmanship not only produces a shawl which is reversible because of the perfect workmanship on both sides, but it combines the crafts of both weaving and embroidery.

Kani Jamawar shawls Jamawar shawls are an ancient form of shawl pattern, that dates back to the 18th & 19th century. Jamawar shawls use the kani technique of weaving, and are laden with beautiful handiworks by skilled craftsmen. The decorative works contain comprehensive and intricate patterns, influenced majorly by the Asian countries, especially India (Kashmir) Though this weaving technique seems to be popular as being native to Kashmir, but it actually belongs to Persia. The art was brought to Kashmir from Persia and it flourished in the Mughal era. Jamawar shawls were often worn by the kings and other important members of the empire. Due to the Mughal influence the jamawar shawls often have patterns and prints that have hues of Mughal arts. Jamawar shawls use the jamawar fabric which is made using the fleece of the Capra Hircus goat, popularly known as 'Cashmere.’Jamawar is an adulterated for of pashmina silk as usually a little wool and cotton is mixed with the jamawar fabric. Brocaded patches of the shawls are woven in pashmina or silk. Woven using the kani technique of weaving jamawar shawls are then decorated with elaborate design consisting of paisley motifs. The wide popularity of jamawar shawls and other silk shawls has been instrumental in boosting and encouraging the skilled and talented Kashmiri craftsmen. The popular colors used for making the jamawar shawls are yellow, green, crimson, purple, black and blue. It is due to the beautiful and flawless blend of these colors in the design and the fabric.

The silversmith works with a hammer and chisel, and will faithfully copy any design which may be given to him. Up to recent years, the silver-work of Kashmir had a peculiar white sheen time, very beautiful at first sight, but apt to tarnish after short time. Paper Mache Kashmiri Papier Mache: is among the most renowned Handicrafts of Kashmir. The craft represents a rich tradition of craftsmanship that dates back to the reign of Zainul Abidin Budshah (1420-1470 AD). The paper mache of Kashmir is also know as Kar-i-Kalamdani, as best specimens of old work were the pen-cases (kalamdan) , with the passage of time great perfection has been achieved in this art. Papier mache as of today covers the whole range of poignant products that keep the customers alluring throughout the world. Mughal miniature paintings in papier mache, creating an object of rather an unsurpassed value. Gold powder is also added to some of the object to make them alluring. The year 1320 AD marks a significant shift in the socio-cultural history of Kashmir with the transfer of power from Hindu to Muslim rule and the establishment of the Sultanate in the valley. As with most other Muslim dynasties of that time in the Indian sub-continent, the ruling elite of the Sultans of Kashmir comprised a large number of foreigners, especially Persians and Central Asians. These foreigners included missionaries, preachers, men of letters, swords and merchants who bought with them an appreciation of art and crafts that had developed in the wider Islamic world. Hence the Sultanate rule laid the foundation for the evolution of a unique cultural ethos showing synthesis between the ancient traditions of Kashmir and a host of new ideas originating from Persia, Arabia and Central Asia. Most historical records maintain that the craft was to a large extent limited to the capital city of Srinagar and that too within the Shia community; a majority of whom were immigrants from Persia or surrounding areas. Unfortunately no papier mache object from the Sultanate period (14th to 16th Century) survives today. The art must also have been practiced during the Mughal period but hardly any documentary evidences from that period survive to explain the nature and the extent of the craft. Mughal records, nevertheless make mention of the fact that the Kashmiris were renowned for their painting skills. Though the reference seems to be with regards to miniature painting, yet it does support the tradition of an established artisan community whose members might have diversified into the wider and more acclaimed field of miniature painting. Interestingly this is a tradition that find place even in contemporary Kashmir. Many of the younger children associated with traditional papier mache (artisan) families, have switched over to painting after completing professional course from the Srinagar School of Music & Fine Arts.
