RESEARCH THEMES
BIOCATALYTIC TRANSFORMATION & ENGINEERING OF BIOMASS
Theme Lead: Dr. Lindsay Eltis
1
The theme encompasses the biosynthesis and biological degradation of biomass as well as the engineering of these processes to extract and valorize the different biomass components. Fundamental research is aimed at understanding how genes and their products function in the context of complex biological systems to synthesize, assemble and degrade biomass. Applied research includes using protein engineering and synthetic biology to design “biomass crops” and biocatalysts. These applications include developing new biocatalytic routes to valorize biomass, to reduce energy requirements and waste production, as well as to functionalize biomass for novel uses in chemical and materials manufacturing.
BIO-NANOPARTICLE ENABLED MATERIALS
2
This theme examines the parameters that dictate assembly into supramolecular structures as well as the fundamental interactions between bio-based nanoparticles and surrounding liquids, and other components in composite and hybrid materials. The studies aim to elucidate the effects of nanoparticle production parameters, post-production modification routes, and material processing on physicochemical properties to optimize performance and impart unique structural, conductive, thermal, optical, dispersibility, biocompatibility, and diagnostic abilities. Theme Lead: Dr. Emily Cranston

3
BIO-BASED POLYMERS & CARBON MATERIALS
Bio-based polymers have unique functionality and variability unavailable in synthetic materials. Researchers in this theme have interest in identifying structural attributes of these polymers and establishing structure-property relationships to understand the impact of structures on their thermo-physical and rheological properties as well as processing (including 3-D printing). Research in this theme will seek a fundamental understanding of the materials and their potential transformation into advanced bioproducts. Theme Lead: Dr. Scott Renneckar
4
BIOREFINERY SYSTEMS
Theme Lead: Dr. Heather Trajano
To achieve an effective reduction in the carbon intensity footprint of our global society will require a multi-prong approach. British Columbia is endowed with plentiful “green” (hydro) electricity, innovative policies such as the low carbon fuels standard, and an innovative forest sector. For example, decarbonizing long distance (planes, ships, trains and trucks) transport will require some form of biofuels. This theme looks at how we move from a hydrocarbon to a carbohydrate society: forest/agricultural resides will be transformed through a biorefinery into chemicals and fuels that are functionally equivalent or superior to the products we now make from oil. In addition to the technical aspects of biorefining the economic, sustainability and policy metrics required to transform our current oil-based society to a more sustainable world will be researched.
BIOPRODUCTS ECOSYSTEM ANALYSIS
Theme Lead: Dr. Qingshi Tu
5
The core mission of this theme is to ensure that the innovative technology developments at BPI also entail a sustainable utilization of the resources and environment. Researchers in this theme work closely with other UBC researchers as well as external collaborators to gather the critical information needed for analyzing the sustainability of the novel technologies through simulation, statistical analysis and other industrial ecology methods. This theme also serves as a versatile platform to facilitate communications and collaborations among different stakeholders and governing bodies (e.g., provincial governments, First Nations) involved in forestry, bioenergy, biofuels and bioproduct sectors. These multidisciplinary engagements will lead to a shared vision and values around creating a forest-based bioeconomy that is both socially and environmentally sustainable.

CREATING SOFT LIGHTWEIGHT MATERIALS FROM OIL AND WATER BPI researchers have introduced a revolutionary method to craft soft structures of varying sizes and shapes by utilizing oil and water. This innovative technique, featured in the journal Small, has the potential to drive the development of lightweight and flexible electronics for the future and provide protection against electromagnetic radiation. Lead author Dr. Milad Kamkar, postdoc working with Dr. Orlando Rojas, explained that their approach, known as “liquid streaming,” enables the assembly of nano-sized materials, in-
cluding nanocelluloses, at the oil-water interface. It employs a 3D printer to deposit a blend of water and graphene oxide in oil, resulting in minuscule tubules that can be assembled into structures ranging from micrometers to centimeters. The resulting soft materials can be solidified for use in various applications, all while remaining cost-effective and suitable for largescale industrial use. This pioneering technique offers precise control over the shape and size of soft materials, distinguishing it from traditional emulsions. Potential applications include lightweight electronics and shielding against electromagnetic waves, particularly in critical sectors such as military operations and aerospace electronics. ADVANCED RENEWABLE MATERIALS RESEARCH GROUP - DR. SCOTT RENNECKAR The Advanced Renewable Materials Lab works for the valorization of renewable materials for innovative bioproducts from both scientific (fundamental) and industrial (applied) perspectives. Our goal is to lock sequestered CO2 within plant biomass, that would normally be burned or decay in the field, into applications that have long life-span. Highlighted in our work in the past year are two publications to make lignin more reactive for use in adhesives and plastic materials. Lignin is typically burned in the chemical recovery process during the chemical pulping process; the recovery of the lignin has the strong potential for value added materials from the paper industry. One method our lab developed has created lignin with reactive vinyl groups with the purpose to substitute carcinogenic feedstocks like styrene with benign reactive lignin (Biomacromolecules). The work builds off previous research where we have developed green chemistry methods to turn technical lignin into highly uniform polymers with uniform functionality and molar mass. The other method modifies lignin with functional amino groups using green chemistry principles, resulting in a pathway for lignin, and other phenolics like tannins, to react in adhesive systems such as epoxy resins and polyurethanes (ChemSusChem).
With state-of-art processing and characterization equipment from the CFI (Biomat) and WD funding, the research team has access to nearly all measurement techniques to really connect the structure of the biopolymers and nanoparticles to the properties of the resulting material, making the laboratory and the Bioproducts Institute a highly unique research destination. The facilities are complemented with top HQP recruited from around the globe and also from our own “backyard” with many undergraduate interns or CO-OP students from UBC’s Bioeconomy Sciences and Technology (BEST) program. During this period, our group achieved several significant milestones. We published seven peer-reviewed publications, secured $363,319 in funding, and had 12 Highly Qualified Personnel (HQPs) deliver over 10 conference presentations. Dr. Renneckar, as Chair of the Cellulose and Renewable Materials Division of the American Chemical Society, organized executive meetings and served on the editorial board of Carbohydrate Polymers.
Other aspects of the renewable materials laboratory include research on hemicelluloses, specifically xylan. In this work we provided a fundamental understanding of how to create polysaccharide nanoparticles with controlled sizes from the nano to the microscale (Carbohydrate Polymers). This work continues by investigating the role of water in the structure of the particles, the use of biotechnology to help control polysaccharide architecture and particle size, and novel modification methods to make the particles useful for environmental remediation and functional materials such as hydrogels for drug delivery. FUNDAMENTAL & APPLIED CARBOHYDRATE ENZYMOLOGY RESEARCH GROUP - DR. HARRY BRUMER Dr. Harry Brumer and his research group focus on the discovery, characterization, and application of enzymes as biocatalysts to unlock the potential of complex polysaccharides in biomass. Over the past year, members of the team have explored the catalytic diversity of Lytic Polysaccharide Monooxygenases (LPMOs) from soil bacteria, which outlined the specific ability of individual enzymes to breakdown chitin or cellulose through selective bond cleavage [Li et al. Appl. Environ. Microbiol., 88, e00968-22. http://dx. doi.org/10.1128/aem.00968-22; Li et al. Biotechnol. Biofuels, 14, 29. http://dx.doi.org/10.1186/s13068-020-01860-3 ]. This work built upon a long tradition of biomass enzyme discovery in Cellulomonas species at UBC, initiated by Profs. Kilburn, Warren, and Miller in the 1980s, which established new paradigms in cellulase research of lasting importance.
Building upon their fundamental characterization work, Dr. Brumer’s team then harnessed the catalytic specificity of one Cellulomonas LPMO to perform controlled enzymatic and chemo-enzymatic modification of cellulose surfaces, from nano- to macro-scale fibers, to introduce new functionality [Solhi, et al. Green Chem., 24, 4026-4040; http://dx.doi.org/10.1039/D2GC00393G ]. In related work, Dr. Brumer’s team has also been exploring the characterization and engineering of Copper-Radical Oxidase (CRO) enzymes, which comprise new tools for the bioconversion of monosaccharides, polysaccharides, and other alcohols to value-added materials and feedstocks [Mathieu etal. ACS Catalysis, 12, 10264-10275. http://dx.doi.org/10.1021/ acscatal.2c01956 ]
