I always look forward to this time of year (I wish I could have a endless summer) and we are excited for a memorable season of extended trips, outdoor charity events, social gatherings, and al fresco dinning at our favorite restaurants. Speaking of restaurants, there are a lot of new spots in the works and I am looking forward to all of the new additions to the Lehigh Valley culinary scene. Downtown Allentown is finally getting some signs of life with the new City Center and arena project, I am sure they will make great construction headway while the weather is nice. On the cover this quarter is Allentown native and Golf Channel's leading anchor/ reporter Rich Lerner. Learn how he made his way to the top and how his work also helped Golf Channel land a Cable Ace Award. No matter where life takes you this summer, grab a nice glass of rose', your favorite lounge chair in the sun and enjoy the issue. See you out and about being social. Cheers,

Chris has been in the wine trade for over 25 years, beginning when a trip to Europe after high school graduation developed into a life-long passion for wine. He has worked in virtually all of its aspects including winemaking, restaurant, import, wholesale, and retail. In 1996, he became only the thirteenth American to have passed the demanding Master of Wine Examination. Today, there are still only 29 Americans out of a total of approximately 235 people worldwide who have passed this most demanding wine examination since it was first given in London in 1953. The exam not only covers winemaking and grape growing, but the business of selling, marketing and distributing wine as well. It also demands that successful candidates identify (in a series of blind tastings held over three days), the grape(s) used, where they were grown (country and region), vinification methods employed, the vintage or age, alcohol, acidity, sweetness and the quality/ maturity in a line up of 36 wines. Chris has also worked as a lecturer and educator for a wide array of clients including American Express, Merrill Lynch, Georgio Armani, IBM, Accenture, The Television Food Network, J.P Morgan, The Consulate Generale of Monaco, The Wall Street Journal, Crystal Cruise Lines, and many more. His success as a wine educator/lecturer can be attributed to a unique understanding of what people want to know about wine, a talent that evolved during years of working with clients of his retail shops.

Lalique 15-Day Table Clock Parmigiani Fleurier has joined forces with Lalique, experts in fine crystal work, to create an exclusive limited edition version featuring a Lalique crystal to enhance the clock's exquisite contours. The 15-day Table Clock lays bare the stark architecture of its movement and the beauty of its transparent finish behind five rock crystal panels. A powerful symbol of life and rebirth, here the Coutared fountain is associated with an ageless Table Clock - a reminder that the possibilities for reviving the great classics are truly limitless.A special mechanism inspired by the Maltese cross, allows the 2-week power reserve to be featured directly on the barrel. In terms of winding, the power reserve system is made of an axis linked to a cam which allows the four hands, shaped like a spider around the barrel, to jump in counter movement to it. The Table Clock’s cabinet, which is made from 1 kg of 925 sterling silver; is rhodium plated to avoid any oxidation. It is a simple yet ingenious system whereby the escapement is provided with a force of constant intensity. For more info www.lalique.com

TIME FLIES Bovet: Amadeo Virtuoso An icon among the new 2013 collection, the Virtuoso Tourbillon is a fresh expression of the talents of the BOVET 1822 and DIMIER 1738 artisans. Once again, technical sophistication and ingenuity meet the watchmaking decorative arts in a truly happy match. Right at first glance, the fusion between the movement and the case to form a unique entity appears more clearly than ever. The original way in which the volume provided by the case is occupied grants pride of place to wide-open spaces, as if better to suspend time. As usual, the guidelines given by Pascal Raffy in the early stages of development led the craftsmen to orchestrate complex mechanisms in order to secure the best possible performances – while ensuring complete respect for the aesthetic criteria of the House of BOVET that have been nurturing watchmaking’s artistic heritage for over two centuries. CELLARNOTES BY CHRIS CREE MASTER OF WINE

Rosé

M

France's summer lemonade

y favorite signs of summer is the arrival in the shop of the newest vintage of dry, crisp rosés. Practically a summer ritual in Cafés and Bistros from the Cote D’Azur to the Costa Brava, these quintessential summer wines were initially met with some resistance here in the States. Yet each year more people shed their fear of “drinking pink” and discover the beauty of these versatile summer wines.

Generally inexpensive, rosés are perfect partners to summer’s more casual entertaining and cuisine. They are great with appetizers of all kinds, grilled tuna, salmon, snapper, chicken salad, salad niçoise, tapenades, grilled summer vegetables, olives, cured meats - all work exceptionally well. They are also great all on their own on a warm summer afternoon! While there are several methods of production, rosé wines are basically made by leaving the juice of red grapes -- almost all grapes, even red ones, have white juice -- macerating on their skins just long enough to develop their signature pink hue rather than the multiple days or even weeks for full bore red wines. The grapes are then pressed or the juice is run off and they finish fermenting much like white wines. Another method, called saignee, (to bleed), is done by siphoning off some portion of juice of red wines early on in the fermentation when it just has a feint hue, and vinifying it like a white wine. The juice, skins, grapes left begin continue on as a red wine for fermentation, except that it is now more concentrated by virtue of having less juice to skin, making for deeper fuller red as well the benefit of having a lovely fresh rosé. The third method, used mainly for inexpensive bulk rosé, is done by blending white and red together, with the notable exception of Rosé Champagne, which is made in this method, and a lovely Basque Rosé called Txakoli that, among others make beautiful wines in this method. Somewhere between reds and whites, rosés are typically light to medium in body, crisp and wonderfully refreshing--with a trace of tannin from their red lineage. Contrary to popular belief, almost all are actually bone dry! Rosés can range in color from pale pink to brick/salmon to a light ruby red, and often subtle hints of raspberry and strawberry are found both in the aroma and on the palate. Their individual styles are determined in large part by the grapes from which they are made and the regions where they are grown. While rosés don’t strictly have a season, they are more likely to be found in shops from early April through Labor Day and are generally best consumed young to capture their vibrant youthful freshness. A few exceptions include the Rosé wines of Bandol and those from Lopez de Heredia (who don’t even release them until they have many years of bottle age) that can actually improve for up to a decade and more. Enjoy – but don’t wait! The selection tends to dwindle as the summer winds down and shops begin to look to falls fuller bodied flavors.

H

ow much technology do we need? A seemingly simple question but not necessarily a simple answer. Are we ever going to reach a point where we have ‘too much’ technology? Products and services are constantly improving as new technologies are utilized. This is true in all aspects of the automotive industry, and it has certainly been a good thing. Safety, performance and efficiency have been greatly improved in all road cars. So what can we expect from the world’s most race winning and respected sports car maker Ferrari? The all new LaFerrari, a supercar of unparalleled beauty and technology. “We chose to call this model LaFerrari,” declared Ferrari’s President, Luca di Montezemolo, “Because it is the maximum expression of what defines our company – excellence. Excellence in terms of technological innovation, performance, visionary styling and the sheer thrill of driving. Aimed at our collectors, this is a truly extraordinary car which encompasses advanced solutions that, in the future, will find their way onto the rest of the range, and it represents the benchmark for the entire automotive industry. LaFerrari is the finest expression of our company’s unique engineering and design know-how, including that acquired in Formula 1.” The LaFerrari is the successor to the famed Enzo model and features an 800hp V12 engine that revs to 9,250 rpm. Its’ peak torque of 516 lb-ft is reached at 6,750 rpm. In addition to the V12 monster behind the cockpit the LaFerrari also utilizes a 163hp/199 lb-ft electric motor. Total combined output is a very impressive 963 horsepower and 664 lb-ft of torque. With all of this power on tap, Ferrari says that the LaFerrari can scoot to 60 mph in less than three seconds and hit 124 mph in under seven seconds, and will keep accelerating at an astonishing rate (186 mph in 15 seconds) until it reaches a top speed of 217 mph. Ferrari calls their innovative hybrid technology HY-KERS. HY meaning hybrid and KERS being their acronym for Kinetic Energy Recovery System. This Formula 1 Racing derived system recharges the onboard batteries in two ways. One is through the recovery of energy from the vehicles braking system and the second is utilizing a portion of the V12 engine’s torque. No less impressive is the LaFerrari’s interior and exterior styling. The bodylines are aggressive yet graceful. The layout of the interior is very modern, but continues in Ferrari’s rich tradition of fine craftsmanship and luxurious materials. Ferrari plans to build only 499 examples. Understandably this is not a car for the masses, however it is enlightening to see Ferrari devote considerable engineering resources and employ their Motorsports experience to develop technologies that continue to push automotive excellence to new heights while improving their entire product line. LaFerrari, a masterpiece!

ANDREA TANTAROS Fox News "It Girl"

In her close relations with some of the top conservative media campaigns, Andrea has gained a lifetime of experience, despite being one of the youngest prominent figures on the scene. Just barely into her 30’s, Ms. Tantaros has entered onto the scene in a way that shows that while it may seem as though her career is peaking, it is, in reality, just beginning. Her charisma and broad appeal have made her an asset to conservative media sources looking to reach a younger generation, while still maintaining the staples of the Republican line. In effect, Ms. Tantaros has become something of a unique presence in her field: young enthusiasm paired with seasoned wisdom. Thanks to these defining features, Andrea has come to replace some of Fox News’ original heavy hitters, such as the Glenn Beck Show in the primetime hour.

I

f you’re looking for proof that the American Dream still exists, is still attainable and that hardworking people are still able to make something out of next to nothing, following the rapidly expanding career of Andrea Tantaros is a good place to start. Ms. Tantaros, dubbed “Fox News’ new IT girl,” has worked hard on her journey into the spotlight of the national conservative media scene, without forgetting her roots or succumbing to the pressures that being a nationally viewed political analyst can bring with it. Sitting down with Andrea Tantaros is like sitting down with someone who grew up on your block—an old friend, a neighbor or someone with whom you’ve shared a passing hello with each time you walked down the street in Small Town, USA. Born and raised in Allentown, Pennsylvania, Ms. Tantaros is the product of an upbringing that’s becoming more and more important to remember in the world of politics today: hard work and family values. She’s a stunning Greek girl whose wit and persistence measures up to some of the best in the business. When she was younger, before her days as a journalism and French major at Lehigh University, Andrea worked side-by-side with her parents at their family diner, learning the meaning of hard work and perseverance. After graduating in 2001, she immediately took to forming her reputation for being an outspoken, yet level headed voice within the conservative media, first as Press Secretary to Republican Leadership in the U.S. House of Representatives and then as Deputy Press Secretary to Republican Senator Pat Toomey.

58 Valley Social Magazine

Today, Andrea has even more opportunities to showcase her contemporary politicking style: as an alternating co-host on Fox’s "The Five", the second highest rated show on the Fox Network and most recently through her newly created radio talk show entitled "The Andrea Tantaros Show", which after only three months has attained the seventh highest rank for nationally broadcasted radio programs, replacing Laura Ingram’s show, which debuted on the airwaves at #85 overall. And while the opportunities for Ms. Tantaros are becoming seemingly infinite, each new step in a positive direction is fueled by her modest roots. In my opinion, it is seems as though Andrea Tantaros has the midas touch and because of it, her career doesn't seem to be peaking any time soon.

In the 1950s, King established himself as a powerful musical force, releasing multiple hits such as “You Know I Love You,” “Every Day I Have the Blues,” “Sneakin’ Around,” and “Please Accept My Love.” The self-proclaimed road warrior consistently satisfied fans at an average of 300 nights a year. After the release of 1960s hits “Sweet Sixteen,” “Got a Right to Love My Baby,” and “Partin’ Time,” King followed legends Lloyd Price and Ray Charles, joining ABCParamount Records. King reached infinite fame and admiration in 1969 with the crossover hit that defied mainstream music. “The Thrill Is Gone,” was a soulful departure from his earlier hits and reached the pop audience with his authentic R&B sound. As “The Thrill Is Gone” landed at the top of pop music charts, it engendered memorable appearances on shows like The Ed Sullivan Show and American Band Stand. King later went on to collaborate with artists like Eric Clapton and U2 in addition to his flourishing solo career, pioneering pop culture mainstream for blues musicians. IRELAND

Live and play like royalty

W

hat I’m about to tell you is a true story, similar to the one when your friend bragged about shooting par at Royal County Down Golf Club. My Irish story starts at the famous golf resort, where I was invited to the “bar in the woods.” When asked if I’d like to go to this mysterious place I figured it was a nice little log cabin somewhere in trees off the ninth hole. Instead, we got in a car and followed a few neon signs the shape of a pizza with no writing on them until we came upon a house in the forest. Inside was the most magical bar filled with antiques, golf memorabilia and photos of previous visitors, including Sir Nick Faldo. Next thing I know I was handed a small glass of clear liquid from an unmarked bottle, never a good sign. It was Poitín, a traditional Irish beverage with a 90-proof kick. Poitín is traditionally distilled in a small pot from malted barley grain or potatoes. It is one of the strongest alcoholic beverages in the world, and for centuries was illegal in Ireland. To say “the alcohol made me do it” and to blame Poitín for kissing a leprechaun after a wee bit of alcohol is the oldest trick in the book. The next day I was off to Mount Falcon in County Mayo on the western side of Ireland. The manor house was built on a 2,200acre estate on the west bank of the River Moy in 1876. Here I was schooled in fly-fishing. Mount Falcon owns two miles of the Moy riverfront, where you can find some of the finest salmon fishing in the world. These deep and shallow pools are ideal for fly, bait and spin angling. I dined in the cozy bar and sipped fine Malbec wine, then slept in the same bed Tiger Woods did when he visited. Other golf luminaries have also enjoyed Mt. Falcon, including Faldo, Mark O’Meara and John Cook.

64 Valley Social Magazine

My next stop was Ashford Castle, founded in 1228 and purchased in 1852 by Sir Benjamin Lee Guinness, a member of the family of brewers that make world- famous Guinness stout.

The 350-acre estate includes its own nine-hole golf course, and the 83-room castle is all about opulence and grandeur. Here I was able to practice the 4,000-year-old sport of falconry. The sensation of having a majestic hawk with amazing speed and agility fly through the forest and land on your arm is breathtaking. The Guinness Storehouse was where I learned how the nectar, so well-known in Ireland, is made, along with the incredible history of the Guinness family and its enduring brand. At the Guinness factory in Dublin, you have the opportunity to experience an interactive beer museum that includes learning how to correctly pour a Guinness, a 360-degree panoramic glass bar on the top floor, and a private beer-tasting room which seats 14. Now it was time to play golf on some of the fairest courses in the land. Ardglass Golf Club in County Down has the most amazing views. It’s also very challenging with numerous holes along steep ocean cliffs. The course at Royal County Down is regarded as one of the best in Ireland and I had the distinct pleasure of having tea with some members. The ladies have their own clubhouse adjacent to the main clubhouse and are a very impressive group.

ince 1997, Rich Lerner has been a mainstay at Golf Channel, where his distinctive essays have punctuated the network’s coverage of golf’s major championships. He can be seen doing play-by-play commentary, conducting player interviews and delivering his signature essays for PGA TOUR and LPGA Tour events and, as show host, he sets the scene for viewers at the beginning of PGA TOUR telecasts. Lerner also can be seen anchoring Golf Central and is a contributing writer for GolfChannel.com and Golf Digest. Called by noted golf writer Lorne Rubenstein “an essayist and reporter of distinction,” Lerner was honored with the Women’s Sports Foundation Journalism Award for his documentary, Se Ri Pak, A Champions Journey. His work also helped Golf Channel land a Cable Ace Award. From Tiger Woods: Millennium Man to Courage on the Fairways to New York Stories, Lerner has brought a number of in-depth specials to the Golf Channel. His recent specials have touched on a variety of subjects, including the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, the 1986 Masters, Annika Sorenstam, John Daly and the youthful wave on the LPGA Tour. VS: Tell us about your youth, growing up in Allentown, high school, college... RL: I was born November 10, 1960, in Allentown, the third of four Lerner boys. My oldest brother, Bob, played basketball for Milo Sewards at Allen High on those great Canary teams that were lead by Doug Snyder, the current Allen coach if I'm not mistaken. Bob also played baseball at Allen and as well for Terry Stoudt at North Parkland legion. I grew up going to basketball games at The Little Palestra, with vivid memories of the "Sons of Milo" cheering section and red hot games pitting Allen against Dieruff or Central Catholic. As kids we'd go to J. Bernie Crum Stadium to see football games with Allen against mighty Pennsbury or Neshaminy, and then back again Saturday morning for Raub against Trexler. We rode our Schwins everywhere, with regular stops at the Allentown JCC. I played baseball and basketball under the late, great Hal Grossman, who was the athletic director. He was Vince Lombardi-tough, old school to the core and one of the country's best college basketball officials. He'd occasionally take me and my friend Stevie Korfin to the Penn Palestra when he was reffing a Big Five game and the setting was electric, Penn against Villanova in a 49-47 barn burner long before the three point shot and 24 second clock. We played our own games, too, all day and every day in the summer time at the corner of Glenwood and Highland Streets in Allentown's West End. Whiffle ball, football, hide and go seek, box ball between two squares of a sidewalk, and during the winter we'd sled down 26th street, four PF Flyers linked together doing 25 miles per hour and thank goodness we didn't have Nintendo to keep us indoors. I loved Dorney Park with its rickety wooden roller coaster, Journey to the Center of the Earth and sno cones. The athletic highlights of my youth were generated while playing Midget League Baseball for the JCC and beating our rival The West End Youth Center. I remember hitting a ball so hard that I put a dent in a brand new aluminum bat. My baseball career peaked when I was 12.

COVERStar course with my buddies Tank and Gilly and Snap and Magic and Chuckie and no one goes by their real name when we're hitting balls and busting a few along the way. VS: What is the strength of your game...how's your game now... RL: These days, with travel and family shooting 75 is no longer a priority, nor a regular reality. Again, I'm in it for the cameraderie, though the competitive side still flashes in a five dollar nassau. VS: How did you get started in broadcasting... RL: My love for broadcasting surfaced early, calling whiffle ball games in the backyard. My brother Bob was Steve Carlton, almost unhittable, and those gems offered me an opportunity to announce some memorable moments, like the time when he struck out 43 straight batters, or threw eight no hitters in one day. Seriously, Willie Mays couldn't touch my brother's slider, it was that nasty.

VS: How did you get interested in golf.. RL: At 14 I took up golf. My Dad was an owner of Dorneyville Golf Center. My three brothers and I worked there for years, along with our friends. At 14 my parents sent me to a golf camp at Pinehurst in North Carolina. I couldn't break 100. Two years later in a round with my Mom and Dad I had a three footer to break 80 for the first time. Meekly, I looked at my Mom before I looked at the putt, hoping she'd give me the putt. To her everlasting credit, she said, "You need to earn it." I shoved it right. It was the first of many valuable lessons I'd learn in the game. I obviously owe much to my father, who passed away in early July at 86. He helped found Dorneyville Golf Center, he played countless rounds with me, he always had my back wherever I went and whatever I tried to do. And years later when he'd watch me report from the Masters or The U.S. Open, he'd call and say, "I'm so proud of you the buttons on my shirt are popping." Frank Stocke, the pro at Dorneyville, influenced me as well. He taught us life lessons that no teacher, no mother or father, rabbi or priest would ever dare touch, and they were delivered comically and bluntly through the unfiltered Pall Mall that was dangling from the corner of his mouth. VS: As a player, our research tells us that you were club champ at a course near Allentown...tell us about that experience... RL: At Berkleigh Country Club in Kutztown, I was the "up-and-comer" with my flat belly and reverse C finish, a Jewish Johnny Miller minus the incredible talent. In any event, heavily favored in a number of matches, I mostly underachieved, losing to men named Izzy and Sam and Morty, men who sold drapery and women's wear. Finally, after reading the Inner Game of Tennis, I put it all together, winning the Club Championship in 1981 at age 20, and then again in 1987. I've suffered much more than I've succeeded in golf, but above all I've had laughs on the

VS: What brought you to Golf Channel... RL: After attending Parkland High through 11th grade, graduating The Lawrenceville School and then attending Lehigh for two years, I transferred to Temple University. There, I worked for WRTI, the legendary college station in North Philly, with its motley crew of jazz loving locals and broadcast geeks. After Temple, I drifted to the North Shore of Massachussetts to hang out with brother Bob, hitting golf balls into the Atlantic while contemplating our future, which usually yielded little so we'd return to the task at hand, which was hitting golf balls into the ocean from the summer house he'd rented for the winter. Eventually, the Sports Director's job at WFMZ-TV opened up, and I was hired. My seven years at Channel 69 were great, working with good people like Mike Werteen, Kathy Craine, Dick Dean and Barry Fisher. And the sports scene was intense, from Becahi football to Northampton wrestling to Emmaus swimming to Central Catholic basketball with Ed McCaffrey to all the college sports with Lehigh, Lafayette, Muhlenberg and Moravian. In fact, we first broadcast Lehigh football in the late '80s and I still remember working with Kim McQuilken on some phenomenal games. While at WFMZ-TV, I hosted a show called, "Let's Go Golfing with Rich Lerner," in which we went to local courses with different pros and mixed game improvement tips with timely features. Ultimately, in my mid 30s after some meandering I landed at Golf Channel after an audition set up by a college friend of mine, Dave Kamens, who'd been a producer there. I'm now in my 17th year and it's as if it was drawn up in some fantasy. I've been lucky to have covered all the majors and The Ryder Cup, to have done documentaries on a number of subjects as well as interviews with Palmer, Nicklaus, Trevino and Player, among others. VS: Who are some of the great sports broadcasters that you admire and have learned from both in and out of golf... RL: My broadcast idols were Harry Kalas, Bill Campbell, Big Al Meltzer, Vince Scully, Keith Jackson and Marv Albert. And through the years I've satisfied many requests from my pals looking for an impression of any or all of those icons. I should also mention that I always admired the local ring announcer Joe McHugh and have great memories of my Dad taking me and my brothers to the Little Palestra to see Pedro Morales, Captain Lou Albano and Crazy Luke Graham for a night of pro grapplin'. VS: What are some of your more memorable moments while broadcasting tournaments... RL: Among the memories are Tiger walking from the locker to the practice putting green on Sunday of the 2001 Masters on his way to winning four majors in a row, so focused that he walked right by his mother without saying hello. Also, I stood in the rain and watched Jean Van de Velde infamously blow The British Open at Carnoustie, and after we interviewed him in a downpour and he looked to the sky and said with a smile and his French accent, "This is perfect, no?" I stood just steps away from the balcony as the Americans sprayed champagne after they'd rallied to win The Ryder Cup at Brookline in 1999. commentary, tell us about your family... RL: I travel between 25 and 30 weeks a year, but it doesn't feel like a grind because we follow the sun and the venues are usually spectacular. And my family's been really supportive. My wife, Robin, and I went to nursery school together. We've been married almost 25 years and we laugh that we're in many ways still just two kids from Allentown. She's been fantastic, the right amount of Alice to my Ralph Kramden. Our two boys, Jesse and Jack, are 20 and 15, respectively. Jesse is a junior and plays on the basketball team at Muhlenberg. Jack plays basketball as well, and is in the 10th grade at Winter Park High School in Florida, where we live. We love coming home to Allentown, and in some ways it will always be home. My Mom, Elaine, still lives in the area and is President of National Discount Cruise Company. And obviously we love to go to Muhlenberg for games or family weekends. It's such a pretty campus and a wonderful school. We're really proud of our family's roots in the city. VS: Who was your favorite interview... RL: My favorite interview was probably the one I did with Arnold at the barn where he houses a lot of his memorabilia. Arnold and Jack are like father figures, and they've treated me really well over the years. They've always made feel comfortable. VS: What was your most embarrassing moment on camera... RL: My most embarrassing moment came at the Masters years ago. I raced to go to the bathroom and when I came back the producer wanted to know where I'd been. I said, "I had to take a leak." That line made air! It could have been worse, right? VS: Do you ever get a chance to play any of the tournament courses before or after the tournament... RL: Every so often, I do get a chance to play these great courses, and have teed it up at Augusta National as part of the media lottery, Pebble Beach and The Old Course at St. Andrews. The job does have nice perqs, no doubt.

The Library Bar offers a chic and sophisticated new design, which speaks to the hotel’s place in Philadelphia history. FERASHA FILMS The Backyard Philly Project

F

or over a year, five young professionals from the Lehigh Valley worked to tell a story of poverty and community in the Philadelphia housing projects. Ferasha Films, a developing non-profit documentary film organization, released “The Backyard Philly Project” this past May.

The feature-length documentary follows four teens growing up in a rough area, and the limitations they face. Production for the film began in October 2011, when founder Amanda Danziger approached the other members of her team to help Ferasha Films grow from a one-person operation. The other members of the team; Cinematographer Bruce Kite, Director of Still Photography Nienke Izurieta, Director of Art Lucas Clauser and Director of Communications Brendan Schaller, had all worked with Danziger on previous projects. Danziger has released two previous films highlighting issues of poverty and social justice, one of which was filmed in Rwanda, Africa, while the other in Kolkata, India. “The Backyard Philly Project” is her first documentary filmed in the United States. Having all grown up in the greater Allentown area, the team began to consider how these issues of poverty exist in their own back yards, and they found a story to tell at the Helping Hand Rescue Mission, which is funded by the Kyle Korver Foundation and is located near Center City, Philadelphia. The rescue mission sits in the middle of a housing project, and it is where the four teens have all worked running activities and afterschool tutoring for young children in their neighborhood. Through

education oversights, complicated home lives and the dangers of drugs and violence, it is easy for hundreds of teens to fall through the cracks each year and become victims of their environment. As a proponent of social justice and equality, Ferasha Films has become an advocate for afterschool programs and community outreach. They hope “The Backyard Philly Project” can shed some light on these issues, as the four teens share their lives and their stories. Danziger, a 2006 graduate of Parkland High School, earned her degree in Entertainment Arts Management at Drexel University. Schaller, also a 2006 graduate of Parkland High School, studied Mass Communications at Bloomsburg University. Clauser, a 2004 graduate of Liberty High School went on to study photography and graphic design in Ireland and Southern California, respectively. Kite graduated from Northwestern Lehigh High School, and studied at Liberty University. Izurieta graduated from Lehigh Valley Christian High School in 2004 and the Art Institute of Philadelphia in 2010. All five members have lived in different places throughout the production of the film; Izurieta has been living in Canada during post-production and traveled to Philly for the premiere weekend. Videoconference meetings and hundreds of emails allowed the team to put together a full premiere event weekend. Danziger even gave birth to twins immediately following production, and currently resides in the Allentown area with her husband. Since its May 11th World Premiere, “The Backyard Philly Project” has been nominated for Feature Indie Film of the Year by Philly Geek Awards, and can be seen in upcoming film festivals or by hosting your own screening.

Hard Rock Resort Punta Cana!

W

here can you find a gorgeous beach, all inclusive amenities, 1485 lavish rooms, a 45,000 square foot casino, an 18 hole Jack Nicklaus golf course, an opulent state of the art spa and live concerts by famed artists like Enrique Iglesias? Those features and more are all located at the ultra-hip Hard Rock Resort in Punta Cana, DR. Gone are the days where everything quiets down at 9pm at an island resort. Hard Rock has made it their mission to indulge their clientele in entertainment, gaming, and sports activities as well as highlight the all-inclusive dining features luxury Caribbean resorts have been known for.

The Hard Rock resort has 13 unique restaurants, 4 trendy bars, a super chic night club, children’s activity center, 12 outdoor pools, and wedding packages designed by famous wedding planner to the stars, Colin Cowie.

Each of their over the top rooms are classified as suites. Their entry level suite is over 781 square feet and includes a double Jacuzzi, in room stocked mini bar, 24 hour room service, free wifi and LCD TV with satellite. Because Punta Cana has seen a huge spike in tourism over the last decade, the government has completed several projects to entice visitors to travel to the Dominican. In 2012, major road work resulted in a sleek new highway that now allows travelers to fly into Santo Domingo, La Romana or Punta Cana and now have less than an hour drive between destinations. No longer do vacationers have to dread a 3 hour drive from the airport. With more choices of airports to fly into, travelers have more options thus providing more competition for reduced airfare prices. The Dominican Republic has been a leader in tourism over the past 15 years and the calm Caribbean waters along Punta Cana’s famous beaches create an idyllic vacation setting. With the addition of the Hard Rock Resort, Punta Cana now has a world class casino and their 14,000 square foot Club Oro nightclub which transforms this sleepy beach town into one of the trendiest spots south of Miami!

IS MINIMALLY INVASIVE SURGERY RIGHT FOR MY DOG? It was time to spay Mr. Jones’ dog “Bella” and she was evaluated by his veterinarian. Mr. Jones had recently had his gall bladder removed laparoscopically. Mr. Jones inquired about the possibility of “Bella” having her spay performed laparoscopically. His veterinarian has been performing laparoscopic procedures over the last 2 years. You may have heard this term on advertisements or you may have undergone a laparoscopic surgery yourself. Laparoscopy is a non-invasive surgical technique where 2 or 3 very small incisions about 1/4 to 1/2 inch are made to enter into the abdomen. A video camera is placed into one of the incisions and the abdominal organs can be examined. Through the other incisions, additional surgical instruments are introduced to perform various different procedures. This is an exciting frontier in veterinary surgery, which will likely change how veterinarians have traditionally approached surgical cases. There are numerous advantages to laparoscopic surgery over the more traditional open surgical procedures. Healing times are faster and post-surgical pain is greatly reduced. Clients cannot believe the recoveries from the traditional spays. Due to the magnification that the laparoscope offers, better overall visualization is achieved and exploration of the abdomen for abnormalities can easily be performed. Ovariohysterectomy (OVH - removal of ovaries and uterus) or ovariectomy (OVE - removal of the ovaries) are routinely performed with the laparoscope. One of the most frequent opportunities that we have to utilize laparoscopy is when performing ovariectomies (OVE) in female dogs and cats. For many years the spay procedure entailed removal of both ovaries as well as the uterus (OVH). However, research has repeatedly shown that there is no risk for heat cycles, pregnancy, tumors, or uterine infections once the ovaries have been completely removed. In a nut shell, it is not necessary to remove the uterus. The ovariectomy procedure has been the standard of care in Europe for decades. Because we are only removing the ovaries for this procedure (OVE), it has become possible for us to utilize laparoscopy as a minimally invasive surgical approach. This will lead to more rapid return to normal activity for dogs undergoing this procedure. Research has shown that animals experience 65% less pain with a laparoscopic spay than a conventional spay utilizing a long incision into the abdomen. Additional procedures that can be performed with the laparoscope are laparoscopic-assisted gastropexies to prevent Gastric Dilatation and Volvulus (GDV; commonly referred to as bloat), exploration of the abdomen for a liver biopsy secondary to elevated liver enzymes or suspected tumor, and exploration of the abdomen for cancer. We are able to biopsy and/or remove nearly any structure that lies within the abdomen using the laparoscope (gall bladder, adrenal gland, kidney, etc). Bladder stone removal via cystoscopy can also be performed. Ask your veterinarian about performing minimally invasive procedures for your pet. We use the Covidien Force Triad® at my practice, a state-of-the-art energy source that we utilize for cutting and coagulation purposes and state of the art laparoscopic instrumentation. Please see our website for more information at vcvrc.com or feel free to contact myself or one of the doctors for more information or a consult. Dr. Hodges is a veterinary surgeon at Valley Central Veterinary Referral Center, a specialty center for animals in Whitehall Pa.

BONEFISH GRILL

Do not be fooled by the name Bonefish, the latest culinary craze/crave of the Lehigh Valley, which features more than just flounder. This nationwide sensation serves up its fair share of terrestrial tastings, ranging from tantalizing tenderloins to a variety of mouth-watering pasta dishes. Founders, Tim Curci and Chris Parker, have discovered both a willing and wanting audience at their third location in Pennsylvania, which offers an oceanwide array of succulent sea-life, otherwise not accessible. Try the Bang Bang Shrimp, a taste so authentic it’s guaranteed to leave you closing your eyes, imagining you’re sitting at a sea-side bistro, feeling the crisp ocean breeze grace your replete smile. www.bonefishgrill.com 610.264.3476 90 Valley Social Magazine
