Danish master craftsman Hans Wegner believed that a chair should be made well enough to last at least 50 years. His iconic 1949 creation—called the Round Chair or, simply, the Chair—may be the ultimate expression of that philosophy. The clean wood design is stripped to its bare essentials, a sculptural semicircle resting on four tapered legs with a cane or leather seat suspended between them. The empty space that separates the back from the seat gives the piece an elegance and economy of form that results in greater comfort, not less. “The chair is designed so that you can move around in it,” says his daughter Marianne Wegner, an architect who has run his studio since the early 1990s. “It doesn’t restrict you. You have to move when you sit; the blood has to flow.”

Inspired by a chair designed in 1951 by Hans J. Wegner, the Bear chair was originally manufactured by AP Stolen Denmark. The Papa Bear Chair seems to refer to the animal kingdom with its characteristically playful and organic design. Often called, "the most comfortable chair ever made!" and simply known as "model 19", this classic chair has become an icon of mid-century Danish design. Its Danish name (Bamsestol) translates to "Bear Chair", while in recent years it has become affectionately known as the "Papa Bear Chair". Setting the gold standard for general comfort, the Papa Bear Chair is the most popular of the many Wegner designs. A substantial piece of furniture with solid construction, attention to detail, and clean lines, this chair sacrifices nothing in purpose nor at the expense of comfort... a timeless classic. This chair has recently been completely repadded and professionally reupholstered.
