Education top of class with Citizen of Year win

COMMUNITY builder Banks Gwaxula was named winner of The Herald General Motors Citizen of the Year award at a glamorous event on Friday night. The prestigious ceremony, held at the Tsitsikamma Conferenc e Centre at the Boardwalk to recognise c itizens who go beyond the call of duty to make a positive difference in the lives of others, was c haracterised by warm conversation, good food and wine. The finalists of the awards, who had already been selected winners in their respective c ategories, were also honoured. They are Zamuxolo Mgoduka (Arts and Culture), Dr Neil Littleton (Business), Russell Domingo (Sport) and Raner Schimpf (Environmental Conservation).

Among those who attended were Sister Ethel Normoyle, the first winner of The Herald GM Citizen of the Year award in 1989, last year’s winner, Jenny Rump, Miss PE Bianc a Harper, Protea netball player Zanele Mdodana, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University vice-chancellor Prof Derric k Swartz and Nelson Mandela Bay businessmen and women. NMMU Business School director Piet Naude was the master of ceremonies and kept guests entertained with witty anec dotes. The Herald editor Heather Robertson welc omed guests, citing the importance of the awards. “I am astounded by Nelson Mandela Bay bec ause of the involvement and c onnectivity of the residents of the city. People here are concerned, engaged and want to make a difference.” GM Africa president and managing direc tor Edgar Lourencon said the partnership between the company and The Herald was “a great element of our contribution to the community”. The guest speaker was business leader Sipho Pityana, who gave a powerful and moving speech.
