1.1 Explore Phase 1: Supper club
Brief
Exploratory Practice// CARC7002// CIND7002
The first project is a combination of a collaborative project and also individual design outcomes for the portfolio. You will, as a team, and with other students, fabricate and assemble a large spatial event as a collaborative meal on the quad on the Canterbury campus of the university using the basis of the Forest Table that the previous MA students constructed. You will be split into ten groups, each group will have a section of the Forest Table. You will be making a collaborative event which will centre around a seated meal. You will choose a theme or way of approaching the meal. You might make props/ costumes, automated machines, projections, lighting, interventions and food!! We will allocate you the part of the table once you have a sense of what sort of work you are progressing. You can change the table, you can add or take away from the table, you can use all sorts of materials and activities for inspiration. You might consider a craft, behaviour or material to direct the drama. You might think about the atmosphere, props and change over time. You are required to build into the experience, to make devices or body architecture, lighting or animation, maybe even sound to create and curate the experience you have imagined. You might consider a theme, possibly a type of meal, type of food, time period or part of culture, for example a festival to respond to. It is the centenary of the Bahaus, a famous school of design which forms the model for a lot of the teaching methods in European art and design schools. The central idea of the teaching and design outcomes from the tutors and students was the total work of art where all aspects of design from the cutlery to the architecture. They also had fantastic parties with amazing costumes! UCA is celebrating this milestone with a week of celebrations. The general form of the installation is a performance and event on Friday the 1st of November at the end of the Bahaus week at UCA with a review on Thursday the 7th of November. One of the most important skills of design is documenting and exploring time based media. The major deliverable for this project is a film documenting the installation and ‘performance’ of the meal. This needs to be of a professional standard using film editing software. Think about how you could curate your film, record the event in the moment and how you manage the data and quality of the imagery. Think about the atmosphere and space of the film, the position of the camera and the way you might light the space. Think about how you might draw the time and space of the event you create. How can you show the change of the experience over time. How can you manage the details, the inhabitation, the food?! Impossibly T hin Table by Junya Ishigami (2006)
UCA Canterbury School of Architecture // MA Architecture // MA Interior Design // 2019-20
What do I do now?
1. Meet your group, allocate some tasks. 2. Research the topic. Find some precedents and relevant research materials and put in a group document. 3. Find a theme or concept 4. Think about the idea of event 5. Think about technology and equipment including university resources. 5. Make some drawings/ plans and models. 6. Plan materials and making. 7. Think carefully about documentation. 8. Plan your time and tasks.
Engagement
As a student involved in the project, you will be taking part in group presentations and design meetings, on Thursdays, which will deal with different challenges to the design of the build. You will be working independently and you will have a build week when you will need to be in and ‘on site’ every day. Its an intense period and you will find yourself putting quite a lot of hours in. Its an important project and really does cement you as a team. In this sense its a really great learning curve for you to understand how to work with each other on a large, complex and collaborative project. The focus of the project is to help you develop the professional skills of planning, mobilisation and delivery of a project with a multidisciplinary team, as you might be doing in a professional environment. You will be dealing with the challenges expected and unexpected in the planning and building stages and enjoying the satisfaction (and relief!) of delivery. You will, also be working closely on professional documentation and drawing of a time based project, developing knowledge of software and important skills for practice.
Outcomes
The ability to generate and present ideas for small scale temporary installation type projects responding closely to site and constraints of buildability and resources. The ability to plan and prepare appropriate drawings for the building of a 1:1 installation and also to appropriately record and present the as build outcome. The ability to plan and build a 1:1 scale installation that responds to material and contextual constraints and meets the needs of the brief and intended users. The ability to generate individual design responses which work with a wider installation to contribute to the presentation of the whole.

Staff/ Guests
The project will be run by Lucy Jones, Course Convenor, ljones.s1@ucreative.ac.uk and Owain Caruana Davies and Illugi Eysteinsson, visiting design tutors. Technical support will be provided by Simon Mitchell and Ben Westacott when required and Ben Fletcher and Simon Nimmo in the workshop.
Learning Aims
The aims of this unit are to: A1 Enable you to locate your practice in relation to appropriate fields of research and develop your in-depth specialist understanding of these. A2 Introduce and develop creative practice methodologies into a framework for planning future self-directed practice and theoretical enquiry. A3 Introduce and develop specialist knowledge, technical skills and fabrication processes that facilitate the exploration of experimental approaches in your work. A4 Develop your ability to critically appraise your own work and that of others through regular critiques and student forums. A5 Support you in developing your project proposal providing a framework for the planning and implementation of your research within clear practical and theoretical parameters.
Learning Outcomes
On satisfactory completion of the unit you will be able to: LO1 Demonstrate specific knowledge of creative methodologies, critical theories and historical and contemporary precedents relevant to your design practice LO2 Identify potential areas for investigation, the formulation of clear research questions, and select and reflect upon appropriate strategies or methods of enquiry through creative practice LO3 Investigate research agendas via focused iterative testing and experimentation that has acquired advanced levels of conceptual, formal and technical skills LO4 Document your creative work as a critical methodological framework for on-going personal research agendas with clear coherent intellectual and practical aims LO5 Set goals, manage workloads and meet deadlines.
